Can we add icons for researched units?

Post by jpinard »

I'd like to add roman numerals and make a combat icon for each combat grade unit. For example... A plain tank would have the normal tank icon. A tank with research level 1, would have Roman Numeral "I" in the upper right hand part of the tga/bmp.

How can I add this so the game will know the additional files to use?

I checked with the programmer. At this time, you cannot add different art for different tech level units. This will require some programming time for Keith to set up this capability in the text files (although nothing like what it will take to add TCP/IP/LAN) [:)] This is now on our wish list of new features along with TCP/IP/LAN. At this time we are focused on the first patch which will attempt to fix bugs that users find in the unmodified game (and improve obvious AI problems), but it is possible that this feature will be added down the road (more likely if we have people like you willing to invest the time in providing modified art that a change would allow).
All understanding comes after the fact.

Thanks for checking Joel. I will certainly be willing to do all the additional artwork for the community.

I must say I'm not sure I can see the value of TCPIP/LAN play [&:] PBEM is best suited to this game, and it just seems your time would be better spent elsewhere.

Right on.

And I think the developers will be AMAZED at the art and modding effort from the community if the "hooks" are available.

TCP/IP is something quite a few people have expressed a desire for.

Something you are overlooking, exaclty what stat does that 1 indicate has been improved? There are several stats that can be improved for each unit. Possibly Icons with different graphical representaions for different breakthroughs, but that still would have problems with what to show for units with multiple stats improved. I am sure itcan be worked out, but its going to take a little thought.

That's funny, and yet sad at the same time. I think he'd max out at 0-0... and 0

[:)] Nice to know that changing units are on the wish list (note: I would love TCP/IP [:'(])

I don't see how this will help. Is this a +1 to evasion? Movement? Air-to-Air? Or just +1 across the board? Also, I personally do not want the map cluttered with roman numerals. So if you do add these graphics, please make it an option that can be deselected in the Options menu. Thanks.

Information on the icons is a great idea, almost as good as military standard counters with combat factors in each of the corners. Put AA in the upper left, ground attack in the upper right, naval attack in the lower left and evasion in the lower right.
