I assume it's for play balance, but how about the ability for bombers to go 4 spaces and back again, but for paratroopers to only go half the distance?

Simply not believable!!! This never happened in the REAL WAR! The amount of planes needed to drop troops of 1 Paratrooper unit would take up the whole Bomber unit. If there was a couple Bombers left they would do little damage and why risk Bombing your own troops?? Doesn't make sense.

I'd agree with not letting the Bomber that carries a Paratrooper not attack that turn, or at least with a disadvantage. Dropping guys out of planes was a big deal!
I'd imagine the needed gliders & transports are represented within the Paratroop unit (hense the extra production costs) but they still needed lots of help getting to their target.
As for half the range, most para drops (if memory serves) were done in several waves, the first being the biggest & most important. Thus the transport planes had to come & go several times. Besides, if you didn't halve the distance, you could para-drop half way around the world!

A turn is 3 months long. Ever heard of a paradrop that lasted more than a small fraction of that time ??
Not me.

Bombers will make runs with PARA's on day 1, and with bombs on days 2-90.
