Observation on AI

Post by TOCarroll »

For those of us that like the easier win, I have noticed a couple of things about the behavior of the AI [:'(] Feedback is welcome!

Once it decides on a course of action (e.g. take Kiev district), it will pursue that objective, and not pay much attention to altered conditions elsewhere.

The AI is VERY good at calculating the optimum mix of attack or defense troops. You can shake it up by changing you disposition at the last minute.

The AI does not appear to devote as much attention to holding and objective, as it does capturing that objective. (e.g. some areas are easier to reconquer than t hold).

However, all in all, the AI does a fairly good job. For newbies, I would reccomend playing a couple of games against the computer, with the fog of war off. Watch carefully what moves the computer makes, what it researches, and what causes a response. While not as devious as a human, the AI is a good, solid opponent.

Sometimes the AI plays pretty well but is prone to making grevious errors also. In one game with me as Russia I encircled Axis armies on four occasions in one game. A human player would not likely let that happen, at least not that many times. The fourth instance was the worse: the Axis recaptured Yugoslavia from me and had 10 units left in the nation. I simply captured Austria and those 10 units were out of supply for the remainder of the war. In a game I played today as Western Allies, the AI was playing fairly well. Japan was pursuing a China strategy and the Germans went after Russia. The Germans were making good progress until they left Southern Italy to weak and I took it. The German response was immediate and overdone. They nearly stripped their Russian front bare. Though I was eventually pushed out of Italy (just the Brits at this point), the damage was done as Russia was quickly making up lost ground. Germany lasted to Spring 1946 and Japan went down in Summer 1946. All in all it was a pretty good AI game.

The AI ...tends to leave transports WITHOUT escorts.
The western ally transports will group just off Gibraltar...inviting Italian battleships and destroyers out for free plunder...and skip back into the med.
This becomes an extremely good reason to take Spain and Gibraltrar...if playing against the computer AI.

Agree! AI is so careless with the transports ... but AI is careless in some key strategic positions as well ...

In fact, in my second game (with AI at normal), AI left Gibraltar with a single artillary unit to defend ... and in another occasion, only 1 AA, 1 artillary and 1 infantry to defend Scotland ... And of course, none of them survive after the axis bombing ... and for the latter one, herecomes the "Sea Lion" in 1941!!

One weird thing happened just before London fell in Aut 1941 ... the WA bombed the neutral Spain from London[X(]!! Thus Spain joined the Axis and the bombing just gifted me the Spain troopers and RPs!!

Yes, in all my AI games, the Allies don't defend Gibraltar and towards the end they attack Spain, usually weakly.

Lol!
I've often seen the WA AI invade Morocco, usually weakly, giving me Vichi troops :) AND it usually fails to land any supplies, making them dead ducks if they do invade & reinforce.
And I've often seen Russian AI abandon Leningrad, only to attack it next turn! Weird.
With regards to AI transports, it usually builds tons of them, and rarely fails to pounce on stray subs.

Hopefully it will go after the subs a little better in the patch. The biggest problem it still has is trying to defend transports. Things are better in the patch, but it's still a trouble spot for the AI. The patch should be out by tonight (US time).

be fair, the game AI is not bad. my previous post just point out a couple of weaknesses i observed and we all know it very well that no AI is perfect.

im glad that u guys pay so close attention to our comments made in the forum and are really trying to improve an already good game. keep up ur good works!!!
