Loading Barges

Post by John Galt »

Can anyone tell me what is the trick to loading barges for a river crossing? I got the barges out of the trucks and into the water but the engineers won't go into the same hex as the barges. Can's locate this in the manual. Thanks for any help.

To get the unit into the same hex as someother unit <SHIFT><CLICK> should work.

Forgot, once in same hex selet unit to load and use the load button.

That's what I've been doing but it's not working in the scenario I'm doing now. Maybe the designer is trying to tell me something? .lol

Unit to load in adjacent or same hex, click barge then "L" then unit to load. Surprised an old vet like you didn't have this trick stashed away somehwere. [;)]

Thanks for all the replies guys. And this old vet does have his procedures down, but they don't seem to be working......lol.. I think there is something wrong with the scenario, intended or not. Gentlemen, our game is not perfect. But then neither is war!

Hey there,

New to this forum and just ran across this the other day. Had a scenario where the barges were in the water, but couldn't load them up. Been playing SP since the old days of DOS, so know all about the "shift" load routine. In my case, I had the same problem as you did. Upon closer inspection, it appears that the terrain on the shore line may have had something to do with the non-utilization of the barges. Looking at the map, it was prety clear that light vehicles e.g. barge carriers etc could get to the shore edge, but anything heavier just couldn't do it the way the m3's (half-track) could. Previous experience with barges has always been to pull the barge up to the beach, drive the vehicle into the same square and load. In this case, the vehicles were not permitted to do to this. But I could load infantry. Once again upon closer inspection of the map, the river actually ran in a deep ravine, with fairly high, rough terrain on either side the whole length of the river (and on up the map). One wooden bridge to cross over on was all that was allowed. So I'm betting that you may have run into the same type of situation. The caveat here is to really inpect well the map of the AO you are going to be operating in. I could've saved points by not having 400 some odd points worth of barge carriers as opposed to something more useful. As it was, the barges were nominally useful as riverine recon.

I agree with sdkfz2512, I ran across this before. Also check the shore line for a beach area usually there are some. You can also load tanks off of bridges in some cases.

Place barge as close to shore as possible.

Place vehicle in adjacent hex. (that's the one next to the barge)

Select the barge.

Type L (for load)

Select the vehicle.

Notice how the vehicle has disappeared and the barge is loaded.

Barge will not load a second unit.
