Routine Supply

Post by JBarrett »

I'm having difficulty geting my routine convoy's to run for the Allies. I've even stopped doing anything to the ports from which my convoy's run hoping that if I leave it alone, it will start. 3 months later, nothing. I'm gettin 4 maybe 8 MCS' per week in the routine convoys. Anybody have any suggestions. Thanks.

You must have mcs and tankers in Los Angeles and India for the routine supply to work. The game uses the first 6 groups of mcs or so for the routine convoys. It is also sometimes helpful to have escorts dd and de only.

Thanks, but I was always under the impression, at least from the original PacWar, that the convoys ran out of San Diego for the Americans? I'll try the LA route and see if things improve. Thanks.

Page 47 in the manual, under the section "Routine Convoys". LA is the US base, and Calcutta is the Commonwealth base for routine convoys.

In the original PacWar, too, it was common practice to go to the ports every few turns and send all the ships back into the pool. The game engine seems to use the pool to flesh out the convoys.

In 2.1 of MPW, that doesn't *seem* to make much difference, but it might be worth a try. I still do it if I think the number of ships used is getting too low...it *seems* to help. But it might be coincidence and old habit Image

Also periodically check ALL your ports for stray MCS. I've found some laying around, especially in Australia and the SoPac. Methinks they are built there but not automagically moved to the logistics port.

I've moved a bunch of MCS and DD's to LA and again, nothing runs, not even the routine convoys out of India.

Every once in a while, I'll get 50 or so MCS going, but 75% of the time, absolutely no routine supply runs.

Does the supply situation at bases matter, i.e., if the base has a high supply, then there are no routine resupplys? I'm wondering what triggers the convoys to run?

Anyway, I'll start over and see if it was maybe that one game that was beng messed up. Thanks for the assistance and the clarification on LA instead of San Diego.

If bases don't need supply, then ships will not go out to supply them. Bases with high numbers of ships, airgroups, or LCU's with high amounts of supply/fuel (10 000) will not draw on routine supply. If most of your bases with most of your stuff already has a lot of supply, the MCS pool does not have to risk supplying them (ie. risk getting attacked by subs). If bases are not Isolated (ie. under enemy air control) and they are short of supply and your routine convoys aren't doing anything than this could be a problem.

The 2 biggest things, are carrier TFs and HQs. Bases with these will get a lot of routine supplies. Actually, moving your HQs to bases that need supply (not on the front line though) is much easier than manually moving supplies to them. Its unrealistic, but less tedious. It would be nice for WitP to let the human player pick two or three bases per turn for extra supply, just like having the Central Pacific HQ there.
