Sound Card

Post by ZONER »

Can you play Pac War Without a sound card installed on your computer? I have installed the ver2.2 game when installing it tells me I don't have a required component (sound card)I have installed anyway but game crashes at the credits Is there a work around?

Believe it or not, PACWAR itself doesn't *use* sound, only the introduction screens. This is a pointless carryover from the SSI version, something Matrix should have dropped anyway. Its just stupid. Try running the game directly, i.e. "PAC.EXE", and clear out all that crap Matrix added.

Then the problem isn't sound. Have you enough DOS memory?

DOS can only handle 640K of memory. I don't know what you set to 10 Mb but check the thread Out of Memory Warning to see an example on how to set up your config.sys file
to maximise the free DOS memory.
You need approximately 600-610K probably to run without any problems.

Good luck

I do have the conventional dos memory set to 640 kb and the ems to 10 meg. I also have installed the original 1.2 ver and it works fine I just cannot get the 2.2 matrix version past the credit screen.

Don't use EMS. PAC doesn't use it; few programs do. For those few programs you can make a boot disk for them. Leaving out EMS makes more room available in the 640K memory area. You don't just "set" the 640K limit from within Windows. How much you get in a DOS box under Windows depends on how well you've optimized memory *before* Windows is run. You've got to look at your config.sys and autoexec.bat. Remove unecessary drivers/programs. Optimize HIMEM and EMM386 programs. This has been talked about in a number of threads; here and in the support forum.

I think that the later versions of the game requires a little bit more memory to run.
That's probably the reason.
