Question About the Game
I got not have the game yet by I did come across it over the internet. I saw some pictures, and I have a question. In the Chinese provinces, there is a picture of a person, and a small number. What do they mean?
Also, for the German provinces, there are two numbers. For example, 5 70. What do they mean?

RE: Question About the Game
Hi Phil - welcome to GGWaW
The icon you have seen in China either represents an infantry or a militia unit. The number below indicates the total number of units of all kinds present in the territory
5 70 means that the German player has 5 units present in the territory and that he currently has 70 points worth of rail capacity to use there.
In the screen below the Germans have 41 units present in W. Germany - and because I have moused over the territory you can see the units near the buttom. Amongst others there are 7 armor and 3 fighters.
You can download a demo that will let you try GGWaW if you are in doubt. I believe you can get it here for example.
I hope to you see around for some good gaming - we can always use fresh blood!

Rail capacity determines the amount of troops you can strategically move between areas on the map.
If you look at the picture above, along the bottom you see pictures of different types of units. The number in the upper left is the number of that type in the province.

RE: Question About the Game
I had a problem downloading it, unfortunetely. When I started the demo, and the ame started to load (there was a red bar), the game exited. It did this numerous times. It said I failed to meet the requirments of 256mb also. If I can't download this, will I be able to get the real game?[:(]
Also, I have a question. If you are the USSR, do you have to be an ally, or can you choose to declare war on the allies?

RE: Question About the Game
How much RAM does your machine have?
If somehow your machine cannot play the demo then you wont be able to play the full game either - so you definitely need to figure out the problem with the demo.
The USSR is firmly on the Allied side in this game. The game is won be one of the two sides - not by the individual nation/player - so stabbing the Western Allies in the back isnt part of the game.

RE: Question About the Game
Not sure about how much RAM I have, but I was just able to succesfully download STEEL of PANTHERS.
But...I have another question. Can you attack any country? For example, if you are Japan, can you attack Canada, India, or something like that? If you can, does the same go with the allies?

RE: Question About the Game
in the game, there are only 3 powers namely, axis, allies and neutrals. axis or allies power can attack all but its own type.
in WAW, canada and india are under WA (allies) control, so JP (axis) can attack them ... if they can go that far ...
under the same token, JP can attack Siam (neurtal), CHN or RUS (allies) but will suffer certain penalties as set out in the manual.
hope it helps!

RE: Question About the Game
Phil
Unless your machine is quite old you should be able to play the demo of WaW.
Just to be clear. Is the problem
A) When you download
B) When you install/setup the demo
C) After you have installed and then try to start the game?
I assume its C based on your description with the red bar - so this is just to be absolutely certain as you keep referring to downloading.
Anyway, lets see if you cannot figure out how much RAM your system has.
- How old is your computer?
- Is it a laptop?
- Which version of Windows are you using? (Win XP, Win 2000, Win ME or maybe even Win 98).
Now, my Windows isnt in English nor do I know that yours is - so some of these names may be off. Maybe someone with an English Windows can correct me if I have something wrong.
Do the following:
- Click on the "Start" button.
- Select "Control Panel"
- Double click on "System".
You should then see something like the screen shot I have attached here. Note where it says 1.00 GB RAM. Check what your machine says and let us know. If you are having problems doing this then please ask someone with knowledge about computers to give you and hand.

It says...
Computers
Great Quality System Series
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+
2.00 GHz, 112 MB of RAM
Probably means I won't be able to get it?
RE: Question About the Game
Well if your willing to spend $40 you can buy 512MB more ram. Its cheap so why not?

I am not entirely cetain its possible to have only 112 MB RAM in such a relatively new computer. Infact, I am surprised you can even make Win XP start with only 112 MB.
My advice is to get a friend thats computer knowledgeable to take a look at it just to be certain that something isnt wrong (a fried ram chip, a virus, whatever). I may be wrong but its worth a shot.
With 112mb ram you wont make the game run though - of that I am fairly certain. As I said early - I suggest getting 1 GB or at the very least 512 MB.

RE: Question About the Game
It might be a mistake. I am 100% sure that when I got the computer, it said 256 MB. I will find out why it says 112. So will 256 MB work?
So if I do buy 512 MB, will that add to my current RAM?

Unfortunately, that is not a simple question to answer. It probably will be its not a given.
I still suggest that you have someone help you check for vira or a fried ram chip though. I have never before seen a computer with 112 mb ram. Could you have misread and it says 512?

RE: Question About the Game
Someone else made it work with 256mb. See this thread: tm.asp?m=988930
So, its possible. If you cannot run the demo you wont be able to run they either though. My guess is that the 112mb reported could interfere with the running of the game.

Yes, I got the demo to run on 256MB RAM, 1.5 Ghz CPU and a 64MB Graphics Card. I turned the graphics quality down, but I don't really play these games for the eye candy, so I wasn't too fussed about that. There were some very slight delays whilst playing, but no real problems.
RE: Question About the Game
The reason you may see 112MB ram is that you may has on-board video that shares the system ram. So most likely you have a 128MB stick of ram and the leftover is being allocated to the video ram. In any case, like Jan said have someone who knows computers look at your system. This is not something you need to pay a professsional for, as most computer geeks would consider it a simple matter to tackle. But if you don't know anyone that has any idea what to do inside a computer I can give you a few steps to walk you through it.
First it would help if you knew what a stick of ram looked like. If you do, then...
1. Look at your motherboard to see if you have any open slots for more ram. You will most likely have 1 or 2 open
2. Since you probably don't understand ram types. If things like pc133 or DDR me nothing to you I'd suggest you pull this ram stick
and take it with you to a computer store. A salesperson can identify the kind you need from that. You might have locking tabs at each end of the slot. Poping these back lifts your ram out of the slot automatically.
3. Buy a ram stick of at least 512MB or you will regret it latter. Actually I'd recommend you buy a 1024MB stick. The cost will be somewhere between $40 to $90 depending on the size you buy. If you buy the 1024MB stick you could if you want sell your 128MB stick for maybe $10 at a computer shop.
4. When installing the ram stick look closely at the slot slot and notice the tabs inside the slot. Because of these tabs there can be only one direction to install the stick. Its important that you don't try and seat the stick the wrong way because you may break things trying to snap it in place.
5. Now that your ram is in place its good to go. Fire up your computer and check your system screen for your new value.
6. Dance around for 5 minutes to celebrate cause your going to enjoy this.
PS If you have on-board video this would be a good time to go into your BIOS and increase the amount of system ram to allocate to your video. I'd recomend you allocate the max.

RE: Question About the Game
That could be the reason - very good point Lebatron. I guess it could be 2x128 MB sticks with one not working and 16 MB used for the graphics card. That would explain the 112 MB number.
As Lebatron says - your best chance is asking a friend thats confident with computers to help. If thats not an option I suggest simply unplugging your computer and bringing the cabinet to the store telling them you need 1x1024 mb chip of ram and you would like them to insert it right there and now. Most quality computer stores would do that for free to make the sale as it only takes 1 minute, literally. Mind, no need to bring the mouse, monitor, keyboard or indeed anything but the bare cabinet.
If money prohibits this I fear you will have to skip playing GGWaW for now.

RE: Question About the Game
Oh I forgot to mention something. You will have to go into the Bios to increase your ram allocated to video. 16MB is not enough you need to set it to 32MB at least. I'm sure your on-board video will support that much. In fact I would bet it could go all the way to 64MB as that has been fairly standard for the last few years. An Athon 2400 is a faily good gaming machine but your weak points are system ram and no dedicated video card.
