Language Packs?

Post by reggimann »

Hey guys, my first post [:)]

I was wondering wether it would be possible to edit the text in the game. See, my friend doesn't speak great english, but is a fine wargamer. So even if I explain it all for him, the screen still poses some challenges.

So can you edit it, or are there language packs or something? We're talking about german.

Thanks for any reply

Unit names, division names, HQs listings (in OOB section), date entries, and briefings can all be edited... if you want to do this I'd love to hear about it (and can recommend some techniques to let this go more smoothly).

Have never seen any language packs in the editor... of course my computer system doesn't have the language pack set up for keyboard use right now...

SO... right now you get Fallshirmjager or Fallshirmjaeger in my scenarios... would be interested to find out if its possible to load a language pack into the editor.

Hey JSS, thanks for your answer.

It would be a good start to edit the Briefings. Unit names and such pose no problem when in english, I mean 2nd Armor is 2nd Armor, not "Zweite Panzerdivision" [:D]

The manual should be translated, including the tutorial (which I could do). And the user interface, like the game menu, options, labels on buttons (right click description), stuff like "this unit is surprised" and such.

No way to do that?

Could you tell me how to edit the briefings?

Thanks a lot!!

1. Statements in the popup windows like:

the unit is surprised.... or this unit becomes activated on turn 23 or by alert warning... Overrun not allowed because of 4 steps and dug in...

are not entries that can be edited (using game's editor). These probably could be edited with assistance from SSG (i.e. maybe a special file or German Language patch)... patches take a lot of work though.

2. To edit the briefings you go in the editor to the STRINGS Section... there you'll find several areas that can be changed (including the briefings). Before you do this I recommend you copy all the .scn files into a new scenario directory. If you go straight into the main scenario and edit the values, you can no longer play PBEM with anyone who has the standard version. So making a German Language Variant Scenario is the recommended (plus then you can share it with everyone else[:D]).

an example of how to do this for the 76 turn campaign would be:

- make a new directory such as ...\Battles in Normandy\Scenarios\Deutsche OTP\

- copy all the .scn files in ...\Battles in Normandy\Scenarios\OTP\ to the new \Deutsche OTP\ folder

- open BIN, select new game... Deutche OTP, and then select edit scenario.

Let me know if you need any assistance.

Weird, when I edit a scenario I copied from the original scenario DIR, the game crashes to the desktop. No error message.

[&:]

I can edit a standard scenario just fine, tho. Must be my PC.

I'll keep fiddling with it.

This normally occurs when the necessary scenariopicts.xcr file is not available. Choices would be having your new scenario either: 1) at the main battle level (same level as BIN, TAO4, Rommel, Patton, Kursk, etc...) or a level too far down (scenario to a scenario).

You should have the new scenario directory at the same directory level as the one you copied (unless you've copied the main campaign, in which case the directory should be one level down from the main campaign directory).
