And then we move down to the Celebes. This is still the focus of our main effort. A reinforced KB is operating here. While the main Java invasion forces are arriving we are invading Timor and Maccasar.

In Oz an RCT of the 2ID is about to attack Broome. A second RCT stands by to help if needed. Though we have 2 Dinah units oeprating in this area, we don't see a lot of enemy troops!?

And then on to the Papua/Solomons area. This is our "shoe-string" theater. Our naval power is built around a task force containing two heavy cruisers, commanded by Raizo. There are also several CL/DD SAGs in the area. We continue to try to invade the main bases, while covering ourselves with airpower out of Rabaul. The crippling of two USN carriers earlier in the month has greatly eased the burden our forces in this area would have had upon them had those two carriers not been knocked out, but instead joined by others.

And last and least are the Marshalls. Not a whole lot going on out here. We are mostly building forts. Reinforcements have been nil and we have actually pulled the 24 Air Flottila out (sent to Rabaul). We will send some garrison units once the forts are up a bit. But clearly this area is expendable at this time.

The Summary page. Note our air to air ration has dropped from 3-1 last month to 2-1 this month. Also note we have lost of significant ground troops, mostly in the grinding battles aboard Malaya and PI.

This is just showing Cruisers and Subs. Nothing larger has been lost by either side and a fair bit of smaller stuff has been lost by both sides, but of the harder to kill things, we've both lost one cruiser, though the Japanese have won the "sub" exchange ratio so far, mostl due to Moses "wolf pack" tactics of the first few weeks were he swarmed his subs into small areas and we anti-swarmed with lots of ASW DBs.

Air Production. Obviously our fighter production is way up. Yet the pools for Zeros and Oscars are usually empty. The fighter attrition has been horrendous for both sides. Fortunately about half our losses have been on the ground and have not included as many pilots as planes. In fact we are releasing two fighters units from China and have four more nearing release and have yet to send any back from the front to China, though we will once Singapore falls, if not before. Once the average EXP gets below 60, I'm sure I will pull them out.

RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
Well, Moses and I have been turning the turns around a bit faster this weekend and the AAR is about 5 days behind. We've played through the 5th of February 1942.
In CBI the campaign for North Burma has developed favorably with 4IB capture of Lashio and 21IB capture of Mytchina. However, there are 19 Allied units roaming around in the hills between those two towns and they might be able to cause some trouble if they can get on our rear. But other than that, our primary attention in Burma will now switch to the South as we try to take Akyab overland. IIRC I've never actually taken Akyab overland, prefering to either take it by sea, or not take it at all. But I have a feeling I will regret it if I let Moses build up a base right under my nose, so we will give it a shot. We have switched prep planning of the following units for Akyab: BurmaAreaArmy, 15Army, 33ID, 55ID, 2nd Para Rgt. Another tricky aspect of this plan will be the air war. The Allies can sit back at their bases in India and bomb anywhere in Burma with their 4EB and we really have no defense. But yet we will need some air support and preferrably from multiple bases (harder for 4EB to shut down multiple bases), but the only suitable bases are beyond the range of the Oscars, so that means we will need Zeros. However, deployment of Zeros to Burma may have to wait until after the climax in the Battle for Java. This will be a difficult timing exercise.
In Central China, Moses is threatening the Tri-City with a huge stack, we will have to see if he really comes in or contents himself with smashing our speed bump (already done). He might figure Changsha is strong enough to withstand a Japanese attack from Nanchang and so he might actually try an attack on Wuhan. Time will tell.
In North China we have released several more ID and IB for the thrust to take Kungchang. I don't have a real good feeling about this, because he has sooo many units up there. My only hope is that we can cut them off and THEN prosecute an attack.
China is swapping out the first group of trained air units (we're trying for exp 80 at this point) for untrained units (mostly newly arriving - though we have some units in Malaya that need to be sent to China soon).

RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
In the Celebes, which remains our primary theater of activity. The KB just did another feint towards Soerabaja to test the air defenses and do an anti-sub sweep. We hit two subs and shot down a few Martins. Now that the Hiryu/Soryu group has rejoined, we have time for one real raid before the Java invasion forces show up. The Main Body forces are assembling at Tarakan and the First Wave is just off the visible map area East of Menado.
KB now has all CV/CVL in the inventory as well as 7BB, 12CA and a gaggle of CL/DD. And of course, the main oiler grp is on hand.
We are securing Timor with small units and we be taking Banjarmasin and Bali for use as ASW and fighter support bases for the invasion. We will also try to move a base force to Singkawang and we will station some more planes here. With luck this might look to Moses like a possible invasion of Palembang and keep some of his air power over on this end of the Java Sea.

RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
Some thoughts on Japanese air unit management.
The game gives the Japanese player a number of units. These units are first divided into two main groups by "nation". For the Japanese these two "nations" are the IJA and the IJN. Then within these nations the units are further divided by "type": F, FB, DB, TB, LB, TR, RC, PA, etc. With PDA turned on, one can "upgrade" aircraft within "type" for any unit having planes of that "type". Also the IJA have a "bridge" between the DB and LB types through the "Lily". IJA dive bomber types can upgrade to the "Lily" and from there the Lily can upgrade to the Sally/Helen. But the bridge only works one way. Once the DBs upgrade to Lily, they cannot go back.
So, one primary chore for the Japanese player is to keep all his air units "full". As I once did, some of you may think it is best to try to keep a few high exp air units around at the expense of keeping all your air units on the map. This was the "recommendation" we were given when the game first came out, especially for carrier planes. I won't say never, but I will say that at least for me, keeping all the air units on the map (no disbanding) and having them engaged either in fighting or training seems to work the best when you look at what has to happen across the full length of the war. You want to maintain a "lifecycle" of fighting and training.
While you are fighting, you should fill up your air units as soon as you can. And air unit with 27 slots, which has 5-10 in the 80+ EXP range and 10-15 in the 65+ range and 5-10 in the 40- range, is still functional. But you need to have a threshold below which you will pull the unit out of the line and send it back for training. Also, as an exception to "always keep em full" if a unit gets really trashed, having say less than 20% strength remaining, I'll probably just fly it back to the training base before filling it up, you'll lose far less planes in the transfer process that way.
Training up in China is good if the Allied player will let you. But there are still limits. You can only build/supply so many level 9 airbases in China and also your opponent may not camp LCUs adjacent to you big bases, unless you are a good "negotiator" ... also house rules may restrict your ability to "bomb dots" ... but regardless you will also be looking for "training opportunities" across the map. Once the Allies start comming back, they get "free" training ranges when they take one of your bases with land adjacent. You'll retreat out of the base and become "instant training range". The Japanese are not so lucky for most of the war.
But managing the training of the air units, for me at least, is what takes most of my time, for most of the game, outside the early offensive phase that is.
So this is one reason the Japanese player needs high production. It enables him to continually rebuild the destroyed units and get them started on training back up.
I've never played with PDU on before, so my current game with Moses is a learning experience for me. But back to the IJA bomber force. I like the way the DB seem to be able to get hits on subs. But I think I will convert all IJA bombers to Sally/Helen eventually. Well I'll have that as a goal anyway. The Sally/Helen have some advantages. They carry the heaviest bomb load of any Japanese bomber, out to 6 hex range, this being 4x250KG bombs. The Betty/Nell/Frances only carry 1x800KG or against AF they carry 2x250KG. So against AF, the Sally/Helen carries twice the bomb load of the BNF, out to 6 hexes. Also, the Sally/Helen are LB which can use the "supply training" trick. Training up single engine aircraft is far more "work". It takes longer, you suffer more losses and the process requires much more "hands on" activity from the player. Downsides to Sally/Helen over the DBs are # of engines. And as compared to the Lily not som many bombs. The Lily has the most bombs of any Japanese plane with 8x100KG. I've seen several grps of high EXP Lily's get 100s of hits on a airbase in one strike. This is about the only Japanese plane that can compete with the Allied 4EB when it comes to bombing AF. But they have to be high EXP and they have to be in range. Lily's can also get more "hits" on subs - but they don't do as much damage. And they also require 2 engines, though they can use the "supply training" trick. Well any conversion of the IJA bomber force will take a long time. But I'm trying to figure out the goals in early '42 so I can start moving towards those goals.
In terms of fighters, the decisions are easier. The Oscar-I factories will auto-upgrade to Tony, so I'm building up my Oscar I production. The Oscar-Is themselves don't seem much more useful than Nates. The few times I used Oscar-Is in my game with Moses, they've been trashed, so I don't consider that they can go up against the Allies without Zeros in support. But once they become Tony's different story. Note that PzB is still got a few '42 Tony's around even in 1945 in his game with AndyMac. On the Navy side, there are no choices other than "how high do you want to go". At the start of the game, I was thinking "around 400". And I've just passed that and placed a heavy strain on both HI consumption and as I've started to expand HI to support, the strain is shifting to Resources/Oil reserves because imports from the SRA are really just starting to move. So I've stopped expansion of Zero production. That being said, I empty the Zero pool every turn and have since the start of the game. I'm producing about 15 per turn but that just barely covers losses. And I still have 4 Claude units that have not converted yet. To convert the Claude units that have converted, I have to starve the front line units. Between now (Feb 42) and when the Tony's show up. The burden will be on the Zeros, they will have to bear the brunt of the AC until Sept 42 at the earliest. I expect to essentially run them into the ground in the mean time. My training goal for the Zeros will probably be average EXP 75, but I may have to send them to the front with only 70. We will have to see.
Well .. turn just in from Moses .. so off to process ...

RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
Disappointing day. For the second time - we sent KB in to tackle the air bases around Soerabaja and the operation fizzled - for the second time. This time it must have been weather. But we've been dilly-dallying around now for about a week we very little to show for it. The gating factor for going in to Java must be when the troops arrive and the first wave will be at Kendari in two days. So not a lot of time left.

For the third time - and for the second day in a row - KB did nothing - launched no strikes. Weather again. But at the other end of Java, the landbased air from Borneo hit both Palembang and Batavia. Except for forgetting to escort one group of Betty's (which cost us 7 of them) the a2a cbt went pretty well. I think we got 50+ fighters in exchange for about 15 Zeros.

RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
Well, again the KB strikes against Java did not go in - weather - weather - weather. In the PI we are again embarassed as we can't even sit on the Clark field hex. So we have to face the fact that dispite having almost three times as many troops as were sent historically - that it still isn't enough and we will have to bring more. We have allocated the 56ID and some Arty and Engs from Singapore to the task. In China - it now looks like Moses is making some kind of major move. I'm still not sure I can figure out what he is doing. I would think it would be difficult to supply all those troops in that sector. But his possible targets include Wuhan, Hsinyang, Kaifeng or even Chengting. But to include to group of 10 units that just crossed the river West of Wuhan heading North, it would seem that Moses would have to shift their supply base to Ichang. So that would make Ichang and Honan the supply bases for this attack and I'm not sure they can support the attack (lack of rail connection to the main Chinese hinterland). So we will began to increase our ability to bomb these cities and also begin to move more troops towards this area.
But our main focus right now, remains Java. I just fear that with my luck, the weeklong T-storms will clear up just as our landing forces come into range [:D]

RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
So view of the Java area ... T-storms are forecast yet again - so KB will refuel, need to do a good solid refuel before the invasion goes in. Our Aviation Ordnance aboard the carriers is in pretty good shape (average 80%) of course due to the fact that in the past week our strikes have only flown one day [:D] ... so we will not do a port replenishment. The first wave convoys from Kendari will stage forward to Maccasar. These include the invasion troops, and followup baseforce and the first wave assault supply convoy. The covering forces include the Fuso/Yamashiro Grp, the Taiyo/Hosho Grp and a small DD/PG SAG. The second wave Convoys will complete assembly at Balilpapan.
Airstrikes for today will be from the land bases only. We will focus on Soerabaja in the South and Palembang and Batativa in the North.
Depending on how things go, we will start the final move towards the invasion beaches in 1-2 more days.

RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
View of Central China showing Moses' new offensive which seems to be directed at Hsinyang and/or Kaifeng. Our defense will rely on the garrisons as well as interdicting his supplies through Honan and Ichang. Perhaps this is a major "war winning" push on his part or perhaps this is just some "smoke and mirrors". But when playing Moses in China it pays to be pretty darn careful !!! [:D] So we will assume he knows what he is doing - even though it isn't making complete sense to us yet!
