Morning Air attack on Singapore , at 50,84

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid spotted at 20 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 18
Ki-27b Nate x 4
Ki-43-Ia Oscar x 27

Allied aircraft
B-17D Fortress x 6

No Japanese losses <-- Again - this doesn't tell the tru story... I have almost 50 fighters and his B-17s survive... And several Japanese airframes require repair...

No Allied losses

I've learned to avoid the B17's like the plague. They are the best Allied "fighter" units out there right now. They will attrition your experienced pilots in no time. If you can avoid intercepting them at this time I would, rely on AA to damage as many as you can and enough support units to quickly repair what damage they cause. See the small numbers of them for what they are right now, a nuisance and don't let them whittle away you fighter forces. The damage they are causing is probably minimal, so I'd suggest you save your fighters for another day. The Oscar's lack enough punch to bring them down and the Zero's are too prone to outright losses. I'm still learning the game so take my opinions with a grain of salt, although I'm learning more everyday!

Well my WAG is that if I just let them fly over Singapore a few times then Fionn would conduct a raid with every freaking bomber @ his disposal to shut my base down. @ this time he's sending over penney-packets. If I can't atrit them when they come over in the handfuls then I'd be totally hosed if he flies over with 30 or so... From what I've read it takes a while to repair a B-17 after it's been damaged. My best option might well be to keep sending those 6-10 bombers back to the shop if I can't actually kill them and then pray for operational losses.

I'm wondering what happens when those bomber crews get trained up... <shudder>

I've been reading in the forums where some folk seem to feel the B-17 is just right based on results in Europe. My thoughts are that in Europe we sent lotsa B-17s in special formations designed for supportive fire from LB flying in formation. Plus they had escort whenever possible. You don't get that supportive fire when flying in penney-packets. I feel 8:1 odds should have sent most of the B-17s into the water. Even if you look at just the zeroes there are 3:1 odds...

1eyedJacks,

In hindsight after posting I actually have to agree. While the numbers are small it's a good idea to damage which ones you can. I guess I was looking at it from the perspective of another game I was playing. My opponent hits me often with B17's and after awhile my units were just decimated. I'm seeing raids of 20+ bombers now and even if intercepted by 40+ fighters I rarely bring a B17 down outright in A2A, yet my fighters get shredded. The planes aren't the concern of course, the loss of pilots is the killer. Good luck the rest of the way.

Looking at just the Zeroes is a good idea: 7.7mm rounds against B-17's are more effective than spitballs, but not much. Even the Zero's 20mm guns are far from ideal: they only had seven seconds' worth of ammunition, and the muzzle velocity was poor compared to most other 20mm fighter cannon in WWII service.

German fighters, on the other hand, were generally better armed and armored than the Japanese models. Even so, the Germans found that playing "chicken" -- flying at the B-17 head-on instead of coming in from the rear--was a good move since the B-17's defensive fire was weakest in front. (This is the reason for the chin turret in the B-17G, which reduced the nuisance considerably.) Japanese fighter doctrine emphasized rear attacks, using the manuverability of the fighter to get into a the zone where they could fire and not be fired at effectively. This did not work against 4E bombers, since the tail gunners were now firing with a tailwind and the fighters were firing into a headwind.

I think the results you found were an especially bad roll of the dice, but historically only the heavier Japanese fighters did well against the B-17. Manuverabilty doesn't matter; it's all about firepower and durability. You'll want to produce a number of Ki-45's until something better becomes available.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Hey there.

I like to read both sides of an AAR, because I always find it quite illuminating how the situation is interpreted by each player, what plans they have, what they think their enemy is doing etc.

From reading Nemo's AAR the situation appears quite interesting. I (and I think others too) would love to hear your side of the story.

Is it just me or does it seem that as Japan comes out with new models of naval fighter aircraft they get weaker then the zeros that started production in December of 41?

Nope thats pretty much the way of it the 44 and 45 planes are even slower than the A6M2 .. Jacks & George are good interceptors though so few Daitai can use the George.

March 1942?

We're getting some reports of naval action in the central Pacific from Nemo's side. Any comment?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

yup - there is some naval action going on in the central Pacific... [8D] Sry - I couldn't resist.

I just don't have time to keep up with an AAR like I want to. Work is getting a little hairy and in truth I'm kinda scrambling just to get turns to Fionn in a somewhat normal fashion.

- The last few turns Fionn has had terrible luck with torpedoes.
- Mouse-overs show lotsa enemy air units @ Ponape & Roi-Namur.
- His B-17s are hitting bases in Malaya like Singapore & Georgetown. I've made the decision not to mess with the fortresses until I can get some FB on CAP w/EXP and armor...
- Things have bee quite for several turns - very unusual for a game w/Fionn. The shoe is gunna drop soon - probably Malaya or the PI.
- I'm getting spanked in China. In spite of drawing down all of my troops from Manchukuo, Nemo is sporting 2:1 strength in China. And his troops are getting tougher as combat continues. Also, it's taking longer than anticipated to rebuild the TOE of my LCU units that took heavy losses.

Ground:
- The 15th JNAF AF Unit @ Jehol is moving by rail to Nanking.
- The 10th JAAF BF @ Chengting is packing to use the rails as transport to the embattled base of Sinyang.
- The 11th Div @ Tsiaoto is packing to us the rails as transport to Chengchow.
- I had two INF @ 86,42 set to MOV to 85,43. The 3rd Ind. Mixed Brigade had orders to follow the 35th Div. Fionn has 9 LCU in that hex and they’e been bombarding my two units for several days. The 35th Div has made the move but the 3rd Ind. Mixed Brigade has stayed in the hex and reset it’s movement back to 0… I’m pretty sure this isn’t a case of incorrect orders on my part.
- 1ARM 3ENG 7INF @ 55,59 marching to 54,57. Fionn has 4 units @ 55,58 blocking me…
- 3INF 1AA 1ENG BF @ 86,52 are moving to Luchow. I’ll set up 4ward air ops for LB @ that AF.
o 30/138
- 3INF 2ART 1HQ @ 54,57
o 5.6.42 – 5 of 6 units have forts now. I put these units back on defend as the bombardment had 0 effect. I’ve got LCU @ 55,59 that are moving to join up.
o 5.5.42 Air Bridge from Bangkok brings LCU supplies back up to green. Bombard.
- 20th JNAF AF Unit @ Hiroshima has been transferred to the Southern Army command. This unit is ear-marked for Singkawang.
-

Naval/Merchie:
- TF198(ASW) near Truk is moving off to hex 109,106 with MaxReact set to 0.
- TF172(I-170) is patrolling around Truk – maybe it’ll get lucky.
- TF26(RO-63) is returning to Truk for beans/bullets/fuel and is 2 hexs out. They could win the lotto too.
- TF147(I-7)Patrol @ Tokyo set to patrol around Java with HP=Singapore.
- TF50(I-153)Patrol near Mindanao set 2 patrol around Mindanao with HP=Manila
- TF6(Amphib) from Tokyo with 5ENG of air support is now near Vigan on its way to Johore Bahru
- TF42(ASW) @ Tokyo returning to Onnokotan-jima. Fionn has a couple of subs patrolling that base as I type.
- TF59(Amphib)@ Shasukotan loading the 61st INF for Tokyo. I’ll rebuild to full strength and deploy for my Borneo phase-II push.
- TF153(Mine Laying) has deployed mines @ Singkawang and is returning to Saigon.
- TF148(Resources) after loading resources @ Singapore got caught @ 51,83 by long range bombers. Light damage to a pair of xAK considering the multiple attacks. Fighters on CAP helped defend.
- TF47(Mine Laying) @ Takao will deploy 82 mines @ 50,86 (TF currently east of Groot Natoera)
- TF127(AC) arrives near Dejamadja
- TF88(Amphib) @ Yokohama formed and en route to Hiroshima to pick up the 20th JNAF for transport to Singkawang.
- TF302(Mine Laying) @ Tokyo will head to Chaochow and mine the port. HP=Takao.
- TF45(Transport) has 3 xAK damaged by enemy air units and is off to Hong Kong 4 repairs.
- TF354(RO-67) 50/97/6/0 from ASW attacks @ Balikpapan is creeping 2wards Manila but still in the Makassar Straight.
- TF1(Transport) @ Saigon is off 2 Nagasaki 4 repairs
- TF70(SC) @ Saigon have refueled and are off to Hong Kong 4 repairs. This was my counter-raider force that saw action in the Strait of Malacca.
- @ Truk form TF of all xAK/xAKL bound for Manila. I’ll use these to move my LCU to Mindanao/Borneo.
o 5.6.42 - Out by Satawal
- Form a raider TF of CA/DD @ Hong Kong to do a drive-by of Palembang. I might get lucky & have an opportunity to blast one of his Raider TFs…
o 5.6.42 - Now 3 hexs south of Samah
- KB makes a quick foray just north of Bargka from Hong Kong to try for enemy TFs around Palembang/Bargka & see if I can spook Fionn a bit. If nothing else I hope he thinks I’m getting ready to move @ Sumatra and pulls his eyes away from Mindanao & Balikpapan.
o 5.6.42 - Now 3 hexes south of Samah.
- TF74(Cargo)28,620 supplies unloading @ Kota Bharu
- TF138(Cargo)24,440 supplies unloading @ Singora
- TF44(Cargo)2500 fuel arrives @ Manila.
o 5.6.42 - Unloaded and headed back to Pescadores
-

Air:
- Fionn has a pair of CL parked next to Truk. I’ve moved the 13th Ku K-1 Det A and B (both Betty) to Truk to join the Chitose Ku K-1 (Betty) which was on Naval search last turn. All LB are on Naval Attack with the 12th Ku S-1 (Zeroes) & the 50th Sentai (Oscar-Ic) as escort. My WAG is that Fionn’s CL TF is heavily LRCAPped from Ponape. I’m almost tempted to attack his AF again with my Bettys betting that he’s invested everything into LRCAP… A mouse-over of Ponape shows 94 fighters and 102 AUX. ROFL – an AF attack of Ponape it is!
- 73rd IF Chutai (Lily-Ib) @ Samah transferred to Bangkok
o 5.6.42 – Ground attack Fionn’s 1st Burma Div @ 54,57
- 1st Sentai (Oscar-Ic) @ Bangkok transferred to Samah.
- 40th Ku T-2 (Kate) @ Naga brought up to full strength
- 31st Ku T-1 (Val) @ Naga brought up 2 full strength
- Kanoya Ku K-1 (Betty) moved to Naga (Naval Attack/Search)
- Ground attack Fionn’s 61st PA INF DIV @ Iloilo from Naga:
o 14th Sentai (Sally-Ic)
o 58th Sentai (Sally-IIa)
o 62nd Sentai (Sally-Ic)
o 8th Sentai (Lily-Ib)
- Move Yamada Det S-1 (Zeroes) to Kuching to provide CAP for naval TFs out of Hong Kong.
- Bomb Djambi AF:
o 60th Sentai Sally-Ic
o 98th Sentai Sally-IIa
o 3rd Ku S-1, Zero, Sweep
o 84th IF Chutai, Oscar-Ic, Sweep
o 64th Sentai, Oscar-Ic, Escort
o 260th Sentai, Oscar-Ib, Escort
- @ Amoy set 52nd IF Chutai (18/3R) Lily-Ib & the 6th Sentai (27/3R) Mary to Port Attack of Chaochow. Last turn I saw a message reporting enemy ships @ Chaochow…
o So no enemy ships but after the attacks my mouse-over shows 10% dmg to the port. I’m gunna roll the dice again.
- Bring all fighter & MB air units up to strength plus top of reserves @ Singapore
- 11th Sentai 42 Oscar-Ic now @ Singkawang as additional CAP for KB
- Move 12th Sentai 18/27 Sally from Kuching to Singora for beans, bullets, planes. There are no Sallies in the pipe line @ the moment…
o Add 3 pilots – total now 30
- 264th Sentai 36 Ki-45 KAIa Nick transferred to Kuantan flying 70% CAP @ 12k
- 27th Sentai 24/2R Lily-Ib @ Hong Kong air-bridge to 54,57
-

Production:
- Convert G3M2 70(0) @ Maebashi to G3M3 **Now 90 total with Nagasaki @ 20
- Expand Ha-33 @ Maebashi 50(10) 51/9
- Expand Ha-33 @ Nagoya 170(10) 51/9
- Expand Ki-21-IIa @ Nagasaki 14(6) 15/5

Repairs/Misc.:
- Nagasaki
o BB Kongo 40
- Tokyo
o BB Krishima 2 1
o CVE Taiyo 1 -
o CA Nachi 4 3

Notes:
- @ Harbin I’ve increased supplies needed to 12,458 (currently @ 8186)
- I now have 5 G3M3 in the pool – I can hardly wait to use these! ROFL.
- T-Storms are in the forecast again over Changsha…
- @ Chinhae I’m building up the AF to a value of 1 as I have a static BF there with an aviation value of 24.
o 7%
- @ Luchow I bumped the Supplies needed up to 12k and am building up the AF.
o Supplies 4410
- 5.5.42 - Spotted a raider TF @ Oosthaven – looks like 2CA & 5DD – this is probably bound for Singapore.
- Supplies @ Singapore @ 22,536 20,004
- 5.5.42 - Weather is slowing down my air bridge @ Changsha. Some of my LCU are dipping into the red for supplies…

You also would have benefited from having a FP switched over to a "night" mission of Recon. I usually decrease range to 1 or 2 hexes. The combat report would have shown a FP spotting for its own ship and it would have done so for the other ships in the TF.

lol - Hi Michael! Yeah - I was reading a post from Herwin in regards to using FP on night ops. for aSW missions In truth I'd just never thought about it before. It doesn't seem realistic but if it works it works. Thanks for the tip - I'm constantly learning new "features" of this game - lol.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR May 05, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x PBY-5 Catalina bombing from 8000 feet
Naval Attack: 4 x 250 kg GP Bomb <-- bombs - not torps...
4 x Catalina I bombing from 8000 feet
Naval Attack: 4 x 500 lb SAP Bomb
2 x PBY-5 Catalina bombing from 8000 feet
Naval Attack: 4 x 250 kg SAP Bomb
2 x Catalina I bombing from 8000 feet
Naval Attack: 4 x 500 lb SAP Bomb

Only the American PA planes have torpedoes. Thus the above PBY-5 Catalinas are Dutch. The other give away is that their ordnance is calibrated in metric. American and British planes use imperial measurements.

Alfred

Thanks for the tip in reading this Alfred - I had just assumed they were flying @ extended range.
