Currently tied between Space Empires IV Gold and DW:ROTS. Considering DW's comparatively limited modding vis-a-vis SE4 I think this says a great deal about my satisfaction with the core gameplay.

I've played all the Space Empires games as far back as SE2 and SE5's interface, performance, graphics, and tactical combat damn near turned me off of the series. I had such high hopes for the 3D tactical combat. :(

I'd have to go with Birth of the Federation at the moment. Maybe DW will change my mind once I get my copy?

I think "yes" on DW, Hellsbells.

We are fortunate that DW/ROTS is on Matrix. It is more likely to continue to evolve in terms of patches and expansions. As always, I worry about cash flow and hope the devs can continue to profitably expand the line.

No where near as "finished," but Star Ruler gives a similar sense of depth, mystery and surprise that will keep us playing. There's just so much going on under the hood code-wise that it makes once great games like GalCiv2 entirely predictable and boring.

DW is cutting edge. SR continues to evolve. These two games are our greatest hope in terms of 4x nirvana, imo.

Favorite 4x MOO II.

I just can't seem to get into DW yet. I LOVE SOTS, and it took me "several" attempts at "getting it", but I finally figured it out, and the AI consistently beats the tar out of me.

X3, I just don't get it, but maybe someday, but I ain't getting any younger, and my patience to figure games out, seems to shorten with each passing year.

Don't count your chickens yet Rosseau. I thought that SSG Reach for the Stars would continue to evolve and be worked on and it got dropped like a hot potato.

When it comes to my attention span, it too is shrinking like yours. I like my games to have relatively simple but powerful choices, so I spend more time doing stuff and less time scratching my head at the mechanics or clicking repetitiously.

So true. I used to love reading through those manuals. But WitE 400 pages was a chore now that I'm 54!

SOTS is another great one. I forgot about RftS. They didn't do much on that one, did they?

sabre1, it may not be suitable for you but for the age/attention issue I found that following let's play's on youtube for the game I'm interested in usually helps a lot
maybe could do some good for you as well
...Igniting stellar cores....Recharging reactors...Recalibrating hyperdrives....

I enjoy watching some Let's Play videos, especially DeceasedCrab's videos of La-Mulana and I Want to Be the Guy. I just like watching that poor, wretched soul being put through the grinder. [:'(]

The Angry Videogame Nerd, Plinkett Reviews, Super Mario Bros Z, and Nostalgia Critic are also personal favorites of mine. Plinkett is simply great at dissecting movies, especially Star Wars Episodes I-III, but some people won't like his psycho-murderer persona. AVGN and Critic are basically tortured by videogames and movies respectively, while Super Mario Bros Z takes the best elements of Dragonball Z, and actually makes a serious attempt at making each character be true to their personalities. Most flash videos based on videogame characters take the cheap way by misrepresenting characters through excess swearing and bloodshed. Can't say enough good things about SMBZ.
