well I think there are basically two approaches to the Hawaiian Islands:

1) an early conquest with the "knowledge" that they, most likely, won't have been heavily reinforced - however it is highly unlikely that the Allied player will commit his carriers....

2) a later conquest (as FatR has analyzed it is recommended to still attempt it during the "invasion bonus") which might get the Japanese player the so much desired decisive battles, on his terms and without the involvement of much LBA, still during the time of Japanese Naval Aviation supremacy....however there are several aspects (especially the wish for a decisive battle) that would call for an invasion even after March '42

with more and more people trying this approach more and more AFBs will think about heavily reinforcing Christmas Island and actually moving the Inf Rgts at San Francisco to PH to rebuild the Divisions at some stage... (which is SOP anyway mostly by some) -

having looked at a possible PBEM with Reluctant Admiral as the Japanese myself I have come to the simple conclusion that PH is the one location anywhere on the map, where you can predict an Allied counter-invasion at some point. now of all places the Hawaiian Islands have the huge advantage that there is no way, whatsoever that the Allied player will bring in LBA support without considerable prior warning (recapture of MI or CI) - thus it is a very favourable spot to defend even later in the war...

now having read many approaches to this PH invasion, written by John 3rd or FatR or even the late war ideas of Nemo, I have become convinced that a move onto Hawaii is the one operation that will force the Allied player in a VERY costly counteroffensive at some stage....

I have considered others as well, like Perth, Ceylon, Australia, New Zealand (some operations must accompany the invasion of PH, as supporting operations).... but none of these are as necessary as Pearl Harbor...I stand corrected, but I am pretty convinced that I am right there....

just a few thoughts on this PH-business - sorry for hijacking the AAR, John 3rd

PS: if the invasion of PH does not delay the Allied player somewhere in the Indian Ocean, then it will seriously hamper any offensive moves in CenPac and SoPac - if accompanied by other invasions like Perth and/or Noumea/Marquesas/Fiji/Pago Pago even more possible axis of advance can be eliminated

It seems very rational to PH in RA scenario. I tried it with a very good opponent. At first war seemed like over. 4 allied CVs down in 4 month time along with 13 BBs. A line From PH to Suva drawn. But in the end the lower amounth of fuel and supply had diminished my effort. And for a clever Allied player you put a big dent to your defence posture. Look at Witp AE map as your pc desktop image. In game map the distances are not so much but in reality PH is way way too far away to effectively follow double front quick reaction business.

Same situation occurred in my RA70 game w/ DH. I did/have projected into hawaii, then I start having fuel problems across the empire. Takes about 3 months of fuel production to recover.
now in 43 i am on a shoestring.

Just got a turn done with Bill. He boasted (is this psychological warfare?) that he had near 700 planes at Pearl! If so...YIKES! Would be an awful big target though...

As per conversation, I ordered 8 Ro- and I-Boats into the lanes between PH and Kona/Hilo.

KB will rendezvous SE of Midway tomorrow (2-21) and the games may begin.

Returning to FatR comments, I just found 4 more AA units I'd bought out of Korea so I now have 12 available for deployment.

Have decided to form a 'Special Attack' unit of 4 DDs that will move to a range of 7 hexes west of PH. They will be protected by LRCAP of the KB and we'll see if we can spring a CAP Trap on my worthy Opponent.

John,

First, kudos for what you have been able to accomplish in this game. A couple of points to consider from the AFB prospective.

1. The SBD replacement rate is pathetically low (at least in stock) until the SBD-5 production ramps up in Feb '43. So while the SBD force on Oahu is a deadly weapon, it is fragile.

2. I have not read Bill's AAR. I suspect though that he may be using his CV's to ferry USMC sq from the west coast. If he is that is bad news for you. The Allied player gets quite a few VMF and VMSB sq in '42. If he is shuttling in fresh units, he can really ramp up his force strength at very little risk.

3. Just as an aside I think a blitz on the Hawaian islands in January/February 1942 can succed. After that point the Allied player's strength has grown enough to really put a hitch in any HI plans.

Thanks Sir.

You are correct that the SBDs are the crux of the problem. If I can inflict enough casualties on those SBDs then this opens the door on reinforcing the AF with enough BF units to make a difference as well as aircraft. If the SBDs can be somewhat defanged then I should be able to also bring in the AA which will help lower morale with those 4EB. I am not too concerned about the American Fighters. He has a bunch of them (guess would be 200-250) but they are a mix of good--F4F--so-so--P-40--and crap--P-35/P-36. Should also note that there are a few P-38 operating there as well. I HATE those planes!

Three turns ago I had moved most of my SS cordon out to a 12-16 hex range from PH. Had the shuttling idea strike me too and so I did a range calculation then moved the SS.

Also should say that about three weeks ago I got that first China reinforcement of Regiments/Brigades at Shanghai. They all come in at a WAY low strength. Seeing opportunity I bought all four for 4th Fleet and Combined Fleet. One of the companion Brigades was severely beat-up outside of Changsha so I bought it for 150 PP. When combined the entire Inf Div will have only cost about 600 PP. Already have APs in Shanghai and will soon start sending these units east.

He has between 200 and 250 in just Army fighter slots open to him. If is is quiet in Australia, he could withdraw those 5 air groups (25 planes each) to increase his P-40E pool. Like others have said, he is using his CVs to ferry in Navy and Marine groups from San Diego. So, yes he can have over 700 planes there now with part of 3 CVs air groups there.

Is he getting in any supplies and reinforcements?? He starts off with around 500k in fuel, so that isn't a problem. They would be doing a full speed run in over the last part of their trip. Thus, subs and/or small SC TF need to be place 6 hexes North to NE of Pearl and out to about 9 hexes to see where they are coming in from.

Finally, I would focus on getting one base on the 'big' island up and running. You need Mavis/Emily searching up to the North and East of Hawaii.

Put on your AFB hat for a moment and look for holes in your disposition.

Thanks Michael.

The SS are shifting about as we speak.

I will get Kona up first because it isn't 100%/100% damaged. Most of the AA will go there as well. A sizeable set of units will land at Lahaina while I grab Morotai.

Have begun recon of the targets and Lihue doesn't have much in it. Will grab that place eventually.

The planes of the 9th Air Fleet are being uncrated at Midway and Johnston currently. Have another segment of those aircraft going to Palmyra.

Java Free!

Post by John 3rd »

Litany:

Singapore falls on February 13th: 4 ID+ freed up Operationally.

February 21st sees a deliberate attack drop Forts to 1 in Bataan. Strong probability it will fall by March 1st freeing up 3+ ID Operationally

Resistance ends in Java when Bandoeng surrenders on February 22nd: 2 1/2 ID and 6 TK Reg freed up Operationally.

It is highly probable that I will have the DEI area FINISHED March 1, 1942. Where, oh where, shall all these boots go?

Nearly 100 Transports and Cargo vessels raise anchor from the primitive facilities of Johnston Isle. Nobody has been allowed leave and the crammed ships finally moving is a relief. The ships sail together accompanied by 1 BB and 3 BC for gunnery support. The targets: Molokai, Lahaina, and Kona.

To the NE sails the KB in 2 TF: 5 CV, 1 CVL, 6 CA, 3 CL, and 18 DD. To the EAST of them (100 miles) sails the 1st Special Attack Force of 4 DD. Tomorrow these DD will have 40% of the KB's CAP and be 7 hexes from Pearl Harbor. The KB itself has CAP at 40% and will be ten hexes away. It will also be 9 hexes from Lihue so the Kate crews prepare for possible action...

I am bouncing computers so I need to Post these screenshots so I can move to my desktop. The widescreen doesn't allow me to take screenshots that can be uploaded to the Forum. Does anyone know how to fix that? I'm using Paint for my program.

Here is the detailed movement plans for the 1st Special Attack Force, KB, and then the multiple TF moving in on Lahaina, Kola, and Molokai:

Operation Eastern Wind--Day One

Post by John 3rd »

Combat Report
February 25, 1942
Eastern Wind

Had forgotten to title this operation and so it is now dubbed Eastern Wind One. Am certain there shall be at least an Eastern Wind Two coming (the invasion of Lihue).

The day dawns beautifully and SHOULD have been flawless except for the STUPID computer/AI! Deep Breath and think of lovely, pastoral glades with dancing nymphs---Mmmmmmmm...better now...

The 4 DD of the 1st Special Attack Force move to a range of 350 miles west of Pearl Harbor and commence to broadcast catcalls over the radio at the Pacific Fleet listening post under Joe Rochefort. The insults are creative with a quite nice use of invective! Pearl Harbor spots the DDs and launches strikes at the poor, helpless little ships.

About 100 miles behind the Special Attack Force, Adm's Yamaguchi and Nagumo turn their CVs into the wind and commence launching CAP. Timing is delicate as we want the DDs spotted but not the CAP!

Three waves of American Aircraft attempt to attack the wildly twisting DDs to no avail. Details:

Wave One 34 SBD vs. 75 Zero--all but 7 are shot down with no resulting hits.
Wave Two: 24 Buffalo vs. 89 Zero---all shot down!
Wave Three: 17 SBD vs. 79 Zero---ALL shot down!

Americans lose a minimum of 24 Fighters and 44 SBD. BANZAI! This should be between 40-50% of the SBD Force. Starting to peel back the onion...

In the realm of I HATE THE AI...the Japanese CVs choose to launch their Kates at shipping around Lihue. This is fine except NO ZEROs fly escort! Two Waves of Kates (49 and 58) attack several cruisers and AK at Lihue. They are met by about 55 Fighters. CRAP. He apparently achieves the same against my forces by crushing my Torpedo Planes. WHY would the AI launch these planes without Zeros when I am in range. Love the game!!!

This rant being said, I am shocked when I open the TFs and find losses are not near what was described. I did lose a crapload of planes (61 Kate) but I only lost about 18 pilots. HOW can this be??!! GREAT! I guess the AI giveth and taketh away. [X(]

Plans:
1. The Special Attack Unit moves SE and slightly closer to Pearl Harbor.
2. KB does the same to a range of 9. LR CAP still at 40% for the DDs. I fly off the shattered Kate Daitai of Hiryu to Palmyra and will do the same for Akagi's tomorrow. All remaining stirke planes are stood down for the day. My goal is to shot down enemy planes not attack shipping right now.
3. All Cargo/Transport TF move SE and will link-up so they are protected by the Ise and 3 Kongo's.

Air Reinforcements:
I did a count of aircraft that will deploy once the Hawaiian AF are open: 108 Zero, 63 Kate, 54 Val, 125 Betty/Nell, 36 Emily, and 36 Jakes. This does not include the air groups with no planes at Hilo and Kona. Once the AFs are repaired I will be able to draw new airframes bringing in another 108 Zero, 27 Betty, 12 Val, and 15 Mavis. Farther away at Singapore 42 Oscar and 81 Sally are being loaded and brought out here.

Ground Reinforcements:
1. In the Landing TF are: 9th Air Fleet HQ, 3 Air Flotilla, 3 large BF, 3 regular BF, 14 AA units, 5 Construction Bn. Infantry punch to take Molokai comprises 90th Inf Reg and CCA of 2nd ID.
2. The 68th ID in Shanghai is now prepping for Lihue. The 33rd ID at Singapore is prepping for the same Target. One more ID will begin prep as well tomorrow. I will pull an Army HQ and assign it to Combined Fleet. Figure Lihue Landing date for PRIOR to April 1st. Must get it in before the deadline.

Operations Report
The Pacific Theatre
February 18-25,1942

With all the regional updates I can now bring the overall war reports into a single update. You've read the Hawaiian fun above so lets catch-up the weekend turns throughout the rest of the Pacific and IO.

North Pacific
A convoy reaches Attu and unloads another Base Force (Support now 36) as the AF goes to Lvl-1. Adak's AF reaches Lvl-2 (Support is also 36) and so a Chutai of 6 Jakes fly in as well as 36 Nells. The Nells will stay a couple of days and then bounce to Midway. They are needed in Hawaii and I don't want to scare off any shipping in the Aleutians.

Am waiting for Junyo and Nisshin to ready tomorrow Feb 26th. These ships will sail to Yokohama and rendezvous with Zuiho and Shoho. The mighty Yamato is available as of the 28th. We'll wait for her! Additionally the repair yards at Yokohoma are doing great and it now appears CV Shokaku will be available also. The Combined force will be a really wild assortment of carriers but they will sail north to the Aleutians and then down south to link-up with the KB for a massed reorganization. Planes carried by this force will be impressive: 220+. They will sail together in two TF.

Central Pacific
Already detailed above.

South Pacific
A reinforcement convoy just dropped off engineers at Milne Bay and Lunga. Another is headed for Luganville.

Australia
We had planned to land initially at Wyndham but recon picked up 4 units there. With no CVs, I need to operate under LBA so I grab Broome on the 22nd with Fast TF carrying an SNLF. Three Base Forces are unloading now as my SNLF drives east. An Inf Div has already been loaded at Singapore and it will be used to nail Wyndham in about 10 days.

Java
Detailed the surrender of all Javanese Forces on the 22nd. A large bag of 26,000+ POWs move into Japanese camps. All units are shifted to strategic mode where they will move to Soerabaja. Plan to use the 6 Tk Reg and 1 Inf Div there for Australia.

Need to grab Christmas and Cocos Islands. Will detail a pair of SNLF/Nvl Guard. Got to be somewhat careful as these bases have some CD and Air Support present when the war begins.

Singapore
Troops are resting and prepping for various targets. The 38th and Imperial Guards are already at sea heading for Rangoon. Another ID is heading to help the troops finish off Bataan. Planes are upgrading and getting ready to move to differing locations.

Burma
SIR ROBIN! All points from Mandalay south are Japanese and it appears he cannot run fast enough (before my mighty Hoste of 2 Tk Reg and 2 Inf Reg) to the north. Looks like he goes to Katha and heads cross country for Imphal. If he wants to let me have this theatre with hardly a fight I will take it. Think I'll grab Akyab as well and then take a look at the situation.

China
No major developments. Looks like Sian shall be the big, serious first brawl. I have 3 HQ (plus Northern China) moving there as well as 9 Inf Div, 3 Brig, 3 Inf Reg and support units. Am working to bring more airpower to the region but this is taking a bit of time. Have got to build AF, staff them, and then deploy my bombers.

Operational Thinking/Planning
I really don't want Bill to think I am ONLY focused on Hawaii. Once Eastern Wind is completed I plan to swing the KB south. I constantly see shipping at Pago Pago, Suva, and Noumea. Would love to take a bite out of that so the CVs will move that direction. Fuel will be an issue as all my AOs are currently elsewhere (Truk area) so I'll begin to build-up an operational reserve at Canton for that operation.

To have any real chance at isolating Pearl, I must take Lihue. To this end I will deploy an Army HQ and 3 Inf Divisions to assault that base prior to April 1st.

TRUE! It suddenly reminds me of Red Storm Rising when the Soviets sucker punch the American CVs using decoy Kelt Missiles. Maybe I've got research going on here I do not know about. Better check the industry RIGHT NOW!

indeed - a very nice plan that was.... - and a perfectly good waste of the hundreds of AIM-54 Phoenix (which is, if I am not mistaken, about 2 Mio bucks a piece) too.....

That Little Clump of Trees

Post by John 3rd »

Combat Report
February 26, 1942

Not the turn I expected whatsoever.

SS Action
I-9 sinks SS Greenling with 2 Torps
S-28 sinks an APD west of PH
Cuttlefish takes 7 DC at Christmas Isle

I have to note thsat adding 6 or so S-Boats to the Central Pacific has been NASTY! The boats might be crap but their Torps work and I hate them...

Who the heck allowed those thing into this Mod?? Oh....ME!

Eastern Wind
There is positively no action around Hawaii. I expected mighty exchanges and much carnage. Didn't happen and I got lucky regarding that. Two of my TF decided not to follow the lead Invasion TF and separated from the group. It could have been VERY bad!

Everyone is now focused on "That Little Clump Trees" SW of Kona. Everyone will rendezvous with the KB. The Special Attack Force still shields the operation but the CVs change up their CAP to 70% and LRCAP 30%.

LOOK at all those Allied SS! Time to have some fun with them. All Vals and Kates are assigned ASW missions for tomorrow. Search 20%--ASW 50% Range 4 Hexes. Let us ruin some American's Sub Commander's careers...

Burma
Mandalay is taken by my two Tk Regiments while the 38th Inf Div begins unloading at Rangoon. Imperial Guards ID should be at Rangoon in 5-6 days.

China
CRAZY! I have an Ind Div cross the river north of Sian where it DESTROYS 3 Chinese Corps. The dice must have truly rolled in my favor because these were three fresh Corps. My losses were 1036 (only 4 Squards destroyed) to--GET THIS--12,503 Chinese with 90% of the squads destroyed. Have never seen a result like that.

That result in China is wild. Sometimes the mandatory shock attack is a blessing for the attacker.

Forgot to mention that CV Junyo and CVL Nisshin arrive at Nagasaki on the 26th. I made sure well over 20,000 supply was there so I could immediately fillout their air groups. Had forgotten that we re-tooled Junyo to 28 Zero, 18 Val, and 12 Kate for her Air Group. Much better and more close to RL. Nisshin has her 18 Zero and 12 Kate.

I restart BB Musashi so she is due in late-October 42. The last of the 3 Skokaku-Kai is accelerated and I will also accelerate the 2nd Kawachi once Yamato is completed. The goal will be to get the 3 Sho's and 2 Kawachi's delivered all together in mid-May 1943.
