So I looked back at the Dutch Harbor turn while I was looking at my fast transport TF debacle at Adak. Turns out Zuikaku and Shokaku didn't even launch other than to put up CAP, so my strike package was literally 104 planes and 158 bombs smaller than it would have been. That sucks.

Why? The prewar commanders are still in place. Could it be aggression, with so much LRCAP over the hex? With 9/10 DL for days on end and 32 ships in port, I'd think more planes would've flown. I'll have to check the morale numbers, but they hadn't seen combat in weeks so they should have been fine. Fatigue certainly was.

Not sure this is proof f Urumchi moving oil out. Your fuel numbers look inconsistent, so I can't tell what's going on from that. Do you mean the two days when oil went down by a total of 800 points? Did you have the refinery turned off for a while?

I did in fact have it turned off until turn 116 or so when I decided it wasn't shipping everything out, and I'd rather have the supply for my small garrisons up there.

Since Oil always produces, it goes up by 500 each turn or 300 with the refinery on. If, with the refinery on, it went down by 800...that means 1000 got shipped out. To...somewhere. Looks like Lanchow initially, probably, and then looks like farther on for that second one since Lanchow also went down on that day. I think it's been heading to Manchukuo, as my overall Oil levels in China have been rising and then falling several times. I don't really want to try to look 'under the hood' by tracking a bunch of numbers. I prefer to just look at sources and my desired destinations.

Yeah. It's good that it's happening even a little. I need all I can get.

Thanks for checking into it.

Updated Strat Map - 4/30/1942

Here's the strat map with just bases on. I managed to get the line drawn in one contiguous motion and only had to put dots back on it for 3 bases [:)]. Lots of minutiae here. I may edit it out and place inside regional/theater updates as I make those posts.

In general, compared to the Strat Map from February, I've largely completed my goals. China is almost entirely subjugated, save Chengtu, Chungking, and the mountainous west. Chengtu is under siege now. He temporarily broke my supply lines (I assume that was his intention) to my fighters at Chengtu, but supply should begin flowing again now that I control all the hex sides. (This is actually very important so I will try to remember to bring it up when I post about China) Urumchi is underwhelming, but it's still something - plus I got VPs for those Chinese troops and the planes.

I'm stymied in the Aleutians, but I have a lot of LCUs earmarked for a major offensive up there. I want to take Umnak in order to isolate Adak. To that end, 33rd Div (447 AV, 75 Exp) and the 7th Ind. Tank Bde. (102 AV) are preparing for Umnak. Those are the major units. I'm also sending along 6 Naval Guard units currently at Tokyo, and 2 more from Amchitka if I can get them loaded. Amchitka and Attu are veritable fortresses - more Amchitka than Attu. He appears to have about an understrength division at both Dutch Harbor and Umnak, and about 1.5 ID equivalent at Adak.

I don't have Palembang yet, but he's got ~1300 AV there. I have ~3500 with another 500 coming in, and some HQ units for support. Once those arrive (within a week), I'll try my first attack. I'm keeping the AF damaged, but I know he has level 5 forts [X(]. The AF has been damaged almost daily since sometime in February. He got those forts up quickly. I know they're level 5 because, after I had the NW hex side of Palembang under my control, I had an Armor unit shock across the river from the SW in an attempt to move to the hex NW of Palembang. I lost ~70 vehicles, but I think it's worth the intelligence. Plus, the SW hex of PB is now closed and I only need to cut off a few more [:)]. Does anybody know whether Engineers do more damage when retreating, or when there's no retreat? I'm thinking of taking every other base on Sumatra before taking PB. If PBang gets blown up in the taking, I'm not going to be able to capitalize on what I think is so far a very good start with few missteps.

Suva will fall soon, and I think I'll expand my goals to taking Pago Pago. He knows I have nothing at Norfolk Island, as he bombarded it recently. I'm thinking of sending a small SCTF down there to meet any cheap landing force of his.

The USN CVs were last spotted at Dutch Harbor about a week ago. KB and a strong SCTF are holding south of Adak, and I may keep them there another week or so. I've got CA Maya and about 14 DDs running out of Attu, bombarding Adak and Umnak as recon allows. He has a strong SCTF or two in the area, and so far I've been unable to bombard Dutch Harbor.

I'm stuck at Mandalay in Burma thus far, since the majority of my fighting LCUs are on Sumatra. Once Sumatra falls, that army at PBang is going to head for Burma almost in its entirety. The tanks will head for Kunming, where I may need their help. Guards Tank recently arrived (on 4/30) and once its support is filled out it will head to Palembang to assist in breaking down the forts and then head for the BCI area. I may need them at Chungking.

More updates coming. I don't do Super Bowls. Strat Map is from 4/30/42. I already sent the 5/1/42 turn, but didn't make an interim save from which to take screenshots. Oops.

China - 4/30/1942

This screen cap came in just above the 1,000K limit at first, even though my computer insists it is 994K... Lots going on here. The end of China is in the works.

Image

I'm keeping DL as high as possible on every remaining Chinese base with Recon units from Hankow, Kweiyang, and Lao Cai to the southwest off screen. There has been no significant change in forces for at least a month, aside from the disappearance of his air units at Chungking/Chengtu (could they have flown over the mountains?).

1 - Chengtu - At last count (I'm bombarding daily with arty), relative AVs were 1800 for me and 2300 for him. He's behind level 1 or 2 forts as I've been keeping the AF damaged when possible.

2 - Neikiang - Bullwinkle moved 5 units out of Chungking. I had been keeping the capital almost surrounded - partly to help keep its incoming/outgoing LOCs cut off, and partly to see if I could bait him to leave the level 6+ forts there for the open terrain. He did so with these 5 units. I pounded them from the air while they were west of Chungking and moved 2 IDs back to Neikiang to defend behind level 2 forts. It was more than enough. He got stuck, pinned down by my bombers and I used noncombat units already on the way up from Kweiyang to close the hex side behind him. I'll leave these 5 units here to rot - it was ~1500 AV and almost 80,000 troops, a substantial portion of his Chungking forces (about 1/6 of his Troops total and I would estimate maybe 1/5 of his AV total). It did succeed in cutting supply shipments to my fighters at Chengtu for several days, as well as the extremely long supply line to Tsuyung (more on that in #5).

Now that I control the hex sides again, supply will flow from Kweiyang to Chengtu, right?

3 - IJA LCUs - Reinforcements, all heading for Chengtu. Includes 2 IDs to the southeast and a bunch of arty, tanks, and at least 2 more IDs in the northeast, coming through Kienko.

4 - Recovering IJA - 2 IDs that were hit hard in initial attacks on Chengtu and Kunming. The ID outside Kunming is almost finished its recuperation, while the one outside Chengtu has been hampered by a temporary cut in the supply lines.

5 - Tsuyung - I may have made a mistake here. I thought I would be clever and march 3 IDs and a bunch of arty (8-10 units) north from the east of Kunming. It took forever to cross the mountains and rivers, but they're in the base now. He has almost 900 AV defending the place, and he moved the unit out of Kunming into the hex in between as a response to my move here. However my goal was to cut any supply flowing in from the west. I've done that, but I'm having trouble keeping my units in supply. Another source of high ops losses is in my transport planes - I'm having to airdrop supply here, and it's costing me planes.

6 - Kunming - He has almost 2300 AV here and behind level 3 or 4 forts. I have almost 3000, with more coming in from the east. Once Chengtu falls, I plan to send the entire army from up there to Kunming. I need Kunming down, and then I'm moving on to Chungking with my entire army. I think.

7 - Kweiyang Airbase & CEA HQ - Recently built to level 9 as pretty much every engineer from Manchukuo came here. I'll need to send them back sometime, but I wanted a level 9 AF in order to avoid stacking penalties for my immense bombing campaign on Chungking. When I played against the AI, I was running from 3 separate airbases at one point (Changteh, Chihkiang, and Kweiyang). It was a logistical headache, with supply spoilage from "backtracking" LOCs from Hankow->Kweiyang->Chihkiang/Changteh. I think Kweiyang is the best place to base CEA, and it makes sense to centralize my operations here. It's out of reach of almost everything flying from India (15 hexes from Ledo, so only 4Es can reach and B-25Cs on extended range, yes? And Ledo is currently only AF 3). After I take Chengtu, I plan to build its AF to max in order to maximize my VP gain. Same with Chungking. The rest of the Chinese bases are only a multiplier of 10, so I probably won't build them up, and send the engineers back to Manchukuo and to the mountains to build up forts.

Supply is something of a concern here. I'm barely staying above 3x required at Kweiyang and other bases, and my LCUs at Chengtu and Kunming are kept barely above the required amount as well as keeping their organic supply full. Also of concern are my ops losses. I need Chengtu to fall so that I can lay off on my bombing campaign a bit. I'll have another post up from tracker showing my air losses and where they're concentrated.

8 - Defeated and/or trapped Chinese - A 28-stack NW of Sian is pretty much all ghost units. They were previously trapped in the hex to the SW, but I allowed the hex side to open up and they retreated across the river. I'm holding a brigade at Sian, which is more than enough to defend if they come south, but they look to be heading NW. I'll cut them off with the stack heading SW for Chengtu, once I figure out where they're going, and close the hex sides. He had been mounting attacks in an attempt to kill off these Chinese, I think. I got a lot of free VPs. The only other large Chinese stack is SW of Lanchow, where I'm slowing breaking it down with a brigade and an ID. He appears to be moving it NW, but I'll let him. I can afford to keep a couple of IDs up here to protect bases while he starves to death in the mountains.

9 - Chungking - He has 98 units and 460,000 troops here. 1256 guns. According to latest recon, anyway, DL 9/11. I had been only bombing the airfield, but after weeks of considering I've decided to firebomb the place. I'll knock the industry down, perhaps all the way. I can later rebuild the HI. It would be a lot of supply to do so, but it might gain me time and save me on supply costs reducing the place, as the Chinese will have only Chungking's free organic production to sustain themselves. A couple hundred per day? By the time I capture the base, the LI won't be worth rebuilding, I think.

Palembang - 4/30/1942

I'm concerned about getting enough support in place for such a large stack. I'm hoping that my overwhelming AV total, tanks, and continuous supply will help me over the hump, as well as XP levels. Table below, mostly for my own documentation... Units in () haven't yet arrived. Not on this list is Guards Tank, as it will take maybe another month for it to fill out on support (I had plenty of VEH points, but it only arrived with 100 Motorized Support...after first day of replacements, it was up to 108 when split into 3).

Code: Select all

IJA Unit - AV - Exp - Support

 (21st Army) 75 180)
 (25th Army 75 231)

Total organic support deficit: 1320, before ~8 artillery units that each lack 4-6.
Available support: 649
Remaining deficit: 671

As you can see, I'm extremely short on HQ units and support. After the first attack, this probably won't be an issue, heh, as disabled units knock down the required support value of a unit. On top of the units listed here, I have ART units that don't have enough organic support either. Now, several of my divisions have disabled support within them, but not much. If I waited for every piece of support to repair, I might get down to ~600 deficit. That's still a lot. I just don't have any other HQ units to spare, other than Southern Army at Singapore. And I'd like to keep that there as 1) loading it up would cost me several days of Palembang prep points on it, and 2) I want supply/fuel/etc. to have an extra reason to pool at Singapore.

I fully expect 1:2 odds in my first attack and probably 10k casualties. That will "fix" my support problem [:D].

April 27 was the last bombardment here, all initiated by him. I wonder why he stopped. Supply concerns? Possible, but I doubt it with PB producing 1000 per turn that it produces (9 turns out of 10...), so essentially 900 supply per day.

That's a lot of AV and a lot of engineers. I'm scared of what happens when I capture it.

Do I close off the other hex sides with small unloads (AF Coy units, or SNLF)? Should I take the rest of the bases on Sumatra before finishing off Palembang?

I took PB intact late, as you are now, after a long siege. I got no damage from the siege. I'd bombard his forces to dust for a while, but only with the air force and arty on the ground. Ships hit oil/refineries.

It's always dice, but you could get it in good shape.

That's kind of my plan. I'll use a couple of attacks to reduce his forts, then bombard him like crazy. I figure disabled engineers can't blow sh*t up, right?

Tracker Info - 5/1/1942

Image

Air losses...are not good. My Ops are higher than my A2A! Then again, I've been fortunate in A2A in that I haven't had any really bad days in the air. I've highlighted the models that have bad attrition, and it's clearly because I'm trying to do too much too soon.

The Mavis value is concerning because I run all those units at 50% rest, if I have them flying at all.

Image

VP trends. I've been treading water for about a month. I still haven't taken Bataan, or Palembang. It'll shoot up once I take Suva in a few days.

Economy stuff

Chart:
Image

I have several a/c factories turned off. VEH points were at 5k before the arrival of Guards Tank 2 days ago. Junyo arrives tomorrow and I can turn a couple of subs back on. MerSY points are going down at 2 per day. ARM points are trending upwards, and I'm well (WELL!) above the required line. I may do what Obvert and Pax say not to do and turn them off later, maybe in 44? The blue production line dwarfs the green required line.

Image

Supplies have been trending upwards for the past two weeks. I think this is due to the slowing of the pace of Chinese operations in the north? Also, I've stopped some building as my targets have been reached in some places for AF and forts.

Image

I need Palembang before my fuel in Japan runs short. It's currently at 2.3M and I have no choice but to use fuel from Japan to supply my operations in the north. This actually isn't a good screenshot of the Tracker resource history, but it shows back before I shipped out about 400k supply to garrisons... However, supply has been trending upwards since I stopped most of that as well. And I'm shipping in plenty of resources.

R&D

I just got the Tojo-IIa. The IIb will arrive on 9/1/42, and the IIc on 12/30/42. I went with just 5 factories left on R&D, while 2 switched to production. This way, I'll only have 240 IIa produced before the IIb enters production, and only 240 IIb before the IIc.

I'm on pace to get the A6M5 in June, the M5b later this year, and the M5c in early 43, just before he gets Hellcats.

Hrm, 3 weeks since last post. I'm slacking off!

Just completed the May 26 turn. Quick question -

Does anybody know if the data updates changed the SBS of bases? I'm looking at what Bullwinkle is doing around the map, and noticed that Norfolk Island is a Port 2 (1) this turn. I don't have a Tracker alert for its size increasing, however when I look in one of my Allies games its size is Port 0 (0). Was it updated?

And more importantly, does it start at Port 2 (1)?

We're still plugging along, however this isn't a post about the combats and whatnot.

I'm sure lots of people have seen my Pilot HI problem thread in Tech Support. We're on June 9 now (I'll be out of town over the weekend so no turns until Sunday), but I would really like to have some kind of solution in place before the end of June in-game. I've already gotten 2 free months. We're both OK with that - ~55K extra HI is a rounding error over the course of the war. However, it adds up quickly. I'm supposed to be charged 28k or 29k this month.

If Michael M isn't able to fix this for us, I've been trying to think of a solution that I could implement unilaterally but am unable to come up with anything that doesn't short me on the Supply ledger line.

1) Curtail HI production by an appropriate amount per month. This also shortchanges me by 2* that amount in Supply each month (over 2M by July 1945).

2) Overspend in some way, however this still costs me supply by expansion of industry. I could build a bunch of engines that I never use? I would need to build over 1500 engines each month, of say Hitachi Amakaze or something. That's over 1.5M in supply cost to do.

3) Something entirely non-HI related, to be negotiated with Bullwinkle. No idea what this could be.

4) Somehow get Michael M to reduce my HI stockpile by 1,080,000 in July 1945 (30k per month for 36 months)? Heh. I know this should be a possibility since he manually added Supplies to somebody-or-other's game some years back.

I really don't expect that HI will be my choke point - I think it's going to be supplies, much like in Obvert's game. For that reason, any solution that hampers my supply production is really scary to me.

If you get below 1.5M HI points any time past spring 1945 you could turn off factories.

It's not going to be the problem, so coming up with an intricate solution is probably not worthwhile

In your last tracker report you have about 150 merchant yards switched off.

Turn them on and build a bunch of merchants you have no need of and stop them 1 day before they would deploy. That would be a bit over 12000 HI per month. Depending whether you feel the rate for pilot training should be 2x (which seems to be charged) or 5x (that used to be charged) that may cover the situation.
