So here the catastrophe for the Allies, I rated the ill fated surface combat where we lost 1CA,1CL and 2 DDs as one for the IJN described above. For January the big Allied one was this:

Image

Major part of KB hang out undetected in the Allied shipping lines or what I thought where they would be. But they did not find prey, was already quite disappointed for all the fuel and effort sailing the KB. However on 16. and 17. of January they found something, an US CVE fleet. 3 CVEs sunk as well Juneau an AA cruiser. I think 2 DDs also. On the 2nd day they even found some smaller cargo ships portion of which were sunk. 3-5 or so. KB lost quite some planes and retired after the now succesful raid to refuel and replenish.

Ship losses Allies: 3 CVE, 1 CLAA, 2-3 DD, 3-5 cargo ships. Ship losses IJ: none

02 / 1943 brought also a big and some smaller catastrophes for the IJ, here text describing it:

- lost a med size tanker to sub

- a big fast AO was hit by MK14, ca. 70 damage, out for at least 1-2 month even if good escorts present

- in India Allies bombed troops without much resistance, somehow they find troops in the jungle/rough

- in China in the far north old I16s destroy light tanks on 100ft which was a surprise also Hami is defended by 6 units, IJA did not bring enough troops there

- part of KB was routed the wrong way over some coastal hexes over the Munda base, cause the ceo was scarred of subs in the deep water. However the Allies had sent a PT fleet of 6 PTs none of our ships was hit, but the CV fleet was "panicked" by 2 encounters with the PTs and took the opposite direction then ordered. Now the CVs were in good range of the Allied Salomons bases complex. And they launched strikes - most were shot down by the CAP. The air losses are bad, ca. 60 planes. And most of the pilots and modern planes like Jills and Judys were shot down even if they rolled from the assembly line only 1-2 weeks ago. 60 planes + perhaps 50 pilot losses are of course a catastrophe which should be avoided. But a over sensitive commander gave the wrong routing option scarred by 2-3 subs. And did not take into account that the Allies could send surface fleets in direction Munda (coastal hexes). A handful PTs were enough to override the original movement target - which was planned to lay exactly outside the bombers range to the big enemy salomones bases. So planes would not launch in the face of strong enemy land based CAP.

- the CEO let a 2 divisions plus support units be totally isolated at Tassafaronga. One of the div is an elite one. He also was too inactive to delay or stop the building of the Russel island base which now isolated the Tassafaronga base even more.

- lots of seaplanes and transports were shot down or damaged by AA and CAP as soon the Allies took Tassa. The transports suceeded in pulling out some troops but failed to deliver enough supply. The IJ transport plane fleet took serious losses - reminding on a small scale Stalingrad air operation where also the German air supply effort failed - as well many transports were lost. As soon Tassa fell to the enemy suddenly his AA guns came to bear on the transport planes. The turn after this also the CAP. The flights should have been stopped earlier. Contrary to that we where able to save more troops at the northern Australien withdrawal. Some of them by seaplanes, BUT they were outside a base at the coast. Seaplanes are not allowed to "pick up" troops when a enemy base is present as is the case now at Tassa.

- A big fast cargo ship was lost to "accident"

- P38 sweep at Munda gets a 1-3 in their favor mostly Oscars IIbs destroyed these are not anymore competent for CAP duties.

- some HI locations ran out of fuel and stopped production. The ceo did pull out too much fuel and he thought it might be replenished by fuel traveling from Malaya / Indochina however the route in this game does not work. Even if most China is taken and every base in central and southern China only in the north enemy bases remain. Probably a patch changed this so IJ must transport everything by ships. The ceo failed to notice the lack of fuel early to stop drawing out more to the home islands.

- Severall "unsink" messages in the OP report of enemy subs mostly and 2-3 DDs. Seems our guys claim too many, sinking subs is quite difficult even IJN ones. Probably a bit too difficult compared to reality.

- Our by sea bombardements where only minor effective. Allied engineers which are masses could repair the damage quite fast. We sank a few small ships though mostly minesweepers and SCs.

Welcome back, Alpha77. Regarding surface combat, the prevailing wisdom is that it's better to keep fast BBs, slow BBs, CAs and CLs in separate TFs (referring to the below battle):

Japanese Ships
BB Kirishima
CA Mikuma
CA Kinugasa, Shell hits 1
CA Kako
CLAA Tenryu
CLAA Tatsuta
DD Akigumo
DD Urakaze
DD Hamakaze
DD Yamagumo
DD Kasumi
DD Uranami, Shell hits 1
DD Tachikaze

Allied Ships
CL Columbia, Shell hits 6, on fire
DD Chevalier
DD Aaron Ward, Shell hits 2
DD Bailey
DD Russell

If you had separate TFs (with DD escorts, of course), you probably would have handled the Allied TF quite well.

Cheers,
CB

Thanks CB, I think you might be right, there was a thread in the main forum about this.

Allies had captured Tassa and are now clearing the mines and the IJ troops stranded in the jungle. A lift out of some troops by seaplanes did not work cause the enemy has the base. Lesson learned.

March 43 con´t:

The enemy seems to be serious in his actions in India, severall units are observed, at least 3 divisions identified. So this is finally the big offensive. I wanted not to defend Sambalpur hard at first, cause it is so isolated. However it seems the 3 Allied mobile units left the base and we send a division and a heavy art unit to re-conquer the town. I am not sure if this was a good idea for above reasons....
------
We bombs some of the troops in India but our bombers for some reason are not as effective as the Allied 2Es like Mitchels. We use the best we have which are Helen IIa and IIb. The enemy troops are in clear terain. One of my arty units was totally destroyed in a clear hex, while we only seem to "dent" their units.

- M5 Zeros sweep Rekata, 2 P40K downed, Georges sweep too=4 P40K

- Corsairs sweep Vella, finding a ranged CAP (for ships protection) totally out of place/surprised, and down at least 5 Nick and 8 Jacks, for perhaps some OPs losses to the Corsairs.

- B24s return to PM this time bombing the fields, but find 19 high exp M5s on CAP which down up to 4 bombers and the Flak another one, minor damage to base

11. April - 15. April 43

- 2 of our subs hit hard by Fletchers - one makes it back
- More 4E bombing and sweeping of Munda
- we hit CM Keokuk and DD Lardner with 1 sub torp each and next day Keokuk eats 2 more fish and a YMS too
- Allied attention now turns to Vella LaVella also - some B24 reported "damaged" but by what we have no Flak there to reach them?

- Ill fated air attack by Jills:

At this time we still get decent surface combat results - later we have more trouble dealing with Fletchers and PTs...

- DD Aulick is damaged from above combat and then sunk by sub with 1 fish (I guess it must go under at least)

- xAP Wahine hit by 1 torp and a small CMc from ours is sunk by S class sub

- Above fleet meets a PT fleet also but no one scores any hit and next day meets also SS Pollack which is hit 12 times perhaps being sunk?

- P38s sweep Vella and Georges Pangoe but no cap at both places. Horn and Vella bombed at Horn not much is left by now..

- xAK Yamagata Maru hit by 1 torp near Calayan and is sunk (medium sized cargo ship)
