I agree. The point I was trying to make, apparently badly, is what the drive is behind Allied players placing Marine squadrons on carriers and that the need is no longer there by late '44.

Wasn't advocating for restrictions to a combined KB, merely pointing out that it would be needed to eliminate the need for more fighters on Allied carriers in '42.

I bombed the repair yard at HK with B-29s from Ledo at least once. I don't recall the damage, but there was some.

I'll check next turn, not that I'll be invading there anytime soon.

On the 13th Miri is crushed. I'll have to wait for the next turn's recon to see how badly, but this essentially means he won't be using it anymore, with port, field and oil wells severely damaged.

I sent minor sweeps against Palembang to test it out. Got about 1:1.

Loka sweeps with Ki-83 at Dadjangas and Cotabato and they get good results. Tough. I don't have an answer of these yet.

The DA at Cagayan gets a 1:2 but drops forts to 2 and the Japanese take more losses. I'l wait a turn or two for fatigue to lower, then go again.

A part of the KB is sighted off of the PI. I've now got search extending into the South China Sea so hopefully can keep a track on it. Subs are vectoring this way.

Ok. Now that I've caught up the others ,back to it here.

So the only real news on the 14th is that Miri is now out of the oil business. About 14 wells still functioning there, and they'll be gone soon. Attention will mostly shift to Palembang after this. I'll keep hitting all of the airfields along the Borneo coastline in order to prepare for a move on Kudat soon.

On the 15th this attention began to soften up the big base. Night strikes hit the fields, and a bombardment added to the misery just before daybreak. The CAP was in no condition to meet sweeps in the day, and the Allies did well.

By the 16th losses piled up, the service 3 fighters were mostly in the hangers, and there was little resistance after another three bombardments hit, adding to the continued night strikes. During the day sweeps and strikes met only limited CAP, and it was swept aside.

By the 17th nothing was flying, and the base was turned to rubble.

On the other side of the DEI, Talaud Eilanden finally began to crumble, and forts were again dropped at Cagayan, sealing the deal there for a major collapse within the next week.

The most exciting action was still to come, the last two combats of the 17th. Two para units dropped on Luzon, nearly taking Legaspi and grabbing Boac on the first try!! Amphibs are ready to follow, and the Allied CVs have entered the Sulu Sea! [8D]

Hmmm - the right hand side shows daily losses of J 116, A 11 but the total in the Daily portion on the left side of the report says 155 losses total. Assuming there is no FOW in the Allied total of 11 losses (only 8 are showing on screen), there should be 144 Japanese losses. That's quite a spread from the 116 total on the right side and the main Intel Report screen. I presume the lower number is more accurate?

FOW can be fickle. I've seen daily changes of air loss numbers of over 400 +/- depending on the day for individual airframe loss counts.

All I know, and need to know here, is the fields are closed and resistance is finished. [:)]

Palembang takes over 100 hits to the oil. This is the main news of the day. The base is now down to 364 (567).

The Legaspi drop fails due to IJA air transport and bombing, but Boac sticks. All I need is one here, so that's perfect. Troops will transport in through the air, by small craft, and in a few days, via a big amphib TF.

The CVs are amazingly not spotted, so I'll pull back until they're need to land more at Boac. The landings at Kudat are on schedule and moving in, as well as a number of small invasions to dots and vacant islands all over the PI. I won't mess with Manila, but the soon to be constructed airfields and search/recon outposts here will allow Allied forces to cartwheel around Luzon to the North. Prep is nearing completion for about 7-8 targets in North Luzon, on Formosa, the islands between, and the Indochinese coastline.

Talaud-eilanden finaly falls, and this solidifies the SLOC to the PI.

Making the plan and carrying it out are two very different things! [;)]

Taking over a game it's pretty easy to see what possibilities are available, and Bullwinkle had a lot in place I could already use. Troops prepped for the PI, some for Sumatra, some for other smaller spots that would help move things forward.

There are so many bases in the PI though it's also possible to take unoccupied ones with small units and just land a bunch afterward. Like Boac.

A few developments recently may have changed the plans, so more on that ...

On the 19th the Allies drop and take Kudat. A very important base to open the Japanese shipping lanes to Allied attack. I'll reinforce in a few days, once a few other things happen to distract the IJN.

Another couple of dots are taken in the PI to solidify the path to Boac. Sweeps over Antimonan go well for the Allies, but the Japanese heavily bomb troops at Boac, and lucky the weather was crap. Troops more immediately to contest from Antimonan, but it's a four day walk, so I think there is time to reinforce. The amphibs leave Manado and the Allied CV flee prepares to move in.

Palembang takes another 200+ shots to the oil. It'll be done producing within a week. [:)]

Here is a shot of the main area of operations around the Sulu Sea. The Allied fleets assemble and will guide the reinforcements to follow on from para drops on Borneo and Luzon. With these forward bases I hope to support both naval incursions to the supply lines and further invasions along each coast.

The 20th is a significant day for a few reasons. One is the sighting of a massive surface TF near Soc Trang. Four BB and five CAs plus some CLs and DDs. Trenchant can't get a shot off before being sighted. This many big surface ships may mean the KB is nearby. No sightings during the day phase, so I don't really know which way they're heading. I imagine they'd be coming up from Singers though into the South China Sea. .

After this the Allied CVs moved close to Boac, showing themselves in full glory to the myriad naval search planes that were torched, and sitting on Boac and nearby bases that the Japanese targeted again heavily. A good haul on the day from sweeps and CAP. On the 21st the amphibs should unload a few brigades to shore up Boac. I'll keep the KB here for one day, then skedaddle.

Finally, Palembang is nearly out of action after another 250+ hits to the oil. [8D]

The Allied CVs are very close to Manila, and there are a lot of planes there. I have a hunch some kind of strike will happen tomorrow.

On the 21st massive strikes aim for the fleet and transports around Boac. The CAP is up for it, but some still get through.

One CVE is lost in the morning to TB and one in the afternoon to a kami strike. On the day though 600+ Japanese airframes are destroyed, so the VP count goes to the Allies, and the operation is successful. Troops land on Luzon and begin to threaten to cut off the Southern half of the island.

Troops are loading for Legaspi. They should land in a few days.

Over Palembang the bombers hit hard and there is no resistance. Another 350+ hits to the oil. This one is nearly done. [8D]

Well, the kamis, ironically, since he doesn't advocate using them, were the most successful of the bunch. They had only a few escorts and punched right through!

On the 22nd I took aa risk. A few days ago a large TF of BB and CA was spotted by a sub near Soc Trang. On th 21st search planes found something that shows BB in the rollover near the Indochinese coast NW of Cam Ran Bay. Since the unloading would only take another half day at Boac, I decided to go for it.

The CVs were ordered to flank into the South China Sea to about 4-5 hexes from Samah.

The night phase began with a few sightings by IJN search of the streaking Allied fleet moving into enemy territory ...

I always wonder what the other player feels when suddenly something unexpected happens in game. Seeing those ships moving quickly must have given Loka a bit of a shock, and the first destroyed Jill of the day must have confirmed worst fears.

Likewise, imagine my reaction when a short time later a search Kingfisher was destroyed by CAP ...
