Re: Colors for counters

Post by fulcrum28 »

I followed the cathar1244 suggestions for German infantry, Panzer units, Waffen ss and Luftwaffe and updated the scenario for Europe Aflame upgrade TOAWIV 1.3.1. I only changed the yellow foreground and numbers for the panzer units. They resemble a bit more the yellow colors of panzer div symbols.

Only the German counters are updated currently.

Color ID=10,11,12, and 13 correspond to the German Infantry, Naval/Coast, Luftwaffe, and Mot/Mech/Panzer units, respectively.

Only these lines of the .col file were updated. The rest .col file is the default one.

<COLOR ID="10" MainBackground="5070163" Background="5592392" Foreground="12632256" Numbers="12632256"/>
<COLOR ID="11" MainBackground="5070163" Background="0" Foreground="16250871" Numbers="12045269"/>
<COLOR ID="12" MainBackground="5070163" Background="8900346" Foreground="2700841" Numbers="12045269"/>
<COLOR ID="13" MainBackground="5070163" Background="3947331" Foreground="16763651" Numbers="12045269"/>

Another factor is the style of board artwork used. The "game" alternate tile sets would probably make it easier to "see" units like the ones with the "SS" color schemes. The military uniform colors tend to blend into the default TOAW terrain tiles.

Thanks for your comment. yes, sure, map is very important too. This is the map I often use. The green counters are more highlighted in this one. you think it looks better than before? Not sure the map you are referring to.

I like using uniform colors wherever I can and vehicle paint color - and for the Wermacht their Corps colors; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corps_col ... 80%931945) .

Rose-Pink Panzers and Meadow Green Motorized...

Knowing that re-coloring is so easy, it would be nice to see if designers could consider striking more of a balance using more Color ID#s as the Formation Support Types become more cooperative - particularly if everything is on Free Support.

When I do counter colors for scenarios, I usually try to strike a balance between historical uniform colors (Germans are always gray), traditional colors, and national colors.

So my USMC units always look like this:

Or this (in the desert):

Or national colors (L to R ish USMC, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, USAF, France, Belgium, Qatar):

Are your Supply Points side specific? That's a great idea *claps*

I try to jailbreak graphic enhancements as much as I can, thanks to this forum!

Primitive efforts, to be sure, but I enjoy the (limited) results.

By the way, absolutely LOVE the various map mods I got from various people here (particularly for Middle East/Mediterranean scenarios!). Paint.net is also a huge win. You are all great here.

Urban hexes are nice, too. If they are yours, excellent work!

Here is an example from the Soviet color scheme seen above.

Takes a bit of dabbling, but fun to see the results.

cathar1244, my apologies - this is the first time I looked at the beginning of your counter coloring thread- I thought I was on to something and went in a very similar vein with uniforms and vehicle colors but you were 2 years ahead of me... My hat's off to you.

For the Wehrmacht and Soviets I did a lot of research, for the Axis Minors I just went to what Vallejo paint color guys were using to paint miniatures. As I'm sure you found out before me it's all very hard to confirm and requires interpretation and tinkering.

Those ARE fantastic -- which is your first clue I didn't do them! The urban hexes are Cabido, and most of the rest is Telu.
I did make the urban ruins more burned out looking -- I don't possess the skills to generate original material, but I can tweak someone else's good work.

Glad you're enjoying it, Cpl GAC!

One effect noted by others is that strictly following "tactical" colors can make counters "hide" on the map and some combinations are hard to read. In some cases, I go with national flag colors so the distinctions are more obvious.

There are also some old books out there with color plates showing the uniforms of the combatants.

Cheers
