but I am also not going to skimp on early war aircraft production as I feel that puts winning the war in 1944 at unnecessary risk.

By mid-'43 you'll need such aircraft as the George and Frank in order to compete with the new Allied fighters. Otherwise you'll experience the same results as Japan did IRL.

In addition to that I doubt that Japan will be able to win the war by '44. As far as I'm concerned its Jan. '43, or hang on and hope. Of curse I could be wrong, but...

Then try and drain the Pilot Trainee Pool and empty it each month to maximise flow through the pilot training pipeline

There're two schools of thought here, as you mayor may not know. One by keeping your pilots in the 'Trainee Pool', you spend HI. If you pull them out you will expend supply to train them. The choice is totally yours, and I would hope determined by which you think you're in better shape to spend.

This has led me to decide that I will not be moving 80+ experience pilots to Training Command as I see no benefit in accelerating pilots into the Trainee Pool prematurely, plus it would take the best pilots out of the Regular Force.

TBH, as far as I can see the accelerating of pilots in the 'Trainee Pool' is really minimal these days. For whatever reason it rarely occurs. In my current game its happened only one month to Jun '43. OTOH its a good place to place to hide at least some hot shot pilots for those shinny new hot shot planes you should have late war. In my game I've only about 100 in both IJN and IJA combined, but I'll be raising that stating in July. As far as my CV's are concerned I still have about 2/3rds TRACOM level pilots in each fighter compliment. The rest are high 70's. No such thing as a trainee on a CV. IJA not so much, as there are more units.

Oh, and while I'm on the subject, do you know a couple of these pilots in your 'training' units may help train these guys up a bit faster. You may read this yourself in the 'Pilot Addendum' notes.

EXEC SUMMARY FOR 7 DEC 41
So far so good. Most things went to plan, except the CVL task force to support the Luzon coast didn’t quite make it into position from Babeldoab. All opening amphibious landings are ashore.
At Sea: USN starburst vic Pearl Harbour, Dutch sub contacts off Malaya, lots of Long Lances launched at xAKL in the Philippines, Asiatic Fleet heavily damaged, Force Z sunk, RN Hong Kong force heavily damaged.
In the air: IJN fighter sweeps over Manila, Clark Field and Singapore do good work. Bombers start softening up allied ground forces on landing sites and put some damage on Singapore airfields. Lots of Nells attack HDMLs instead of Force Z!
On the ground: Battle of Pengpu. IJA clear this base to allow some rail movement of garrisons in the area. I had a bad feeling I’d forgotten to order this attack but I hadn’t. Batan Island occupied by paras. This will become an IJN ASW Div base once I’ve trained up a FP group.

Task Force 2 encounters enemy Task Force at 78 , 66. Battle off Hong Kong. IJN 2CA+1CL+4DD task force were on route to provide close protection of Kido Butai off the Malaya coast, intercepted and inflicted heavy damage on 3xRN DD’s, sinking one. Looks like the RN DDs were on their way to cover the Luzon coast.

SS I-121 lays minefield at Singapore (50 , 84) and sets course for Saigon
Submarine TF 32 ordered to return to Truk due to damage – USN star burst of ships around Pearl Harbour and lots of sub attacks and ASW counter attacks. CM Oglala sunk and a few IJN subs rattled.
Escort TF 56 (2 ships) formed from TF 13 and routed to Cam Ranh Bay - 1 x DD Kagero class took heavy damage and is burning brightly. Ordered to Puerto Princesa but I don’t think she’ll make it...

BB Prince of Wales is reported to have been sunk near Mersing on Dec 07, 1941 – Force Z sortied to cover Mersing. CrackSabbath emailed back this morning after watching the combat report to say that he did not intend this, but cest la Guerre. I’m sure I will make similar errors in the future. It’s a shame for him but I’ll take it. Force Z sunk and the Asiatic Fleet heavily damaged within the first 24 hours. I’m expecting ambush attempts from the rest of ABDA FLOT around oil producing bases like Palembang, Tarakan, Balikpapan.

Troops are ashore at San Fernando and Vigan. No move on Mindanao or the Islands in turn 1 as I wanted to clear Houston and co first.
Lots of allied CAP came up to play so I think that will continue.
More landings in the days ahead from the standard move task forces. Once they are ashore I’ll put up a sketch.

All I have near Pearl Harbour are subs. It looks like the allies sortied everything so now they either have to go to west coast or back to PH.

He knows where KB is so I have to assume he will use his CVs forward in the Pacific until I can make KB vanish.
He might use his BBs and CVs together to raid the Marshalls early. I’ll set some subs to try and defend again that.
Once he notices what I’m not doing in my 4th Fleet Area that might prompt him into sending something forward.

In one of our first email exchanges he did say he was looking forward to the challenge of keeping all of the USN gas guzzling BBs fuelled.

I think he will try to get the BBs back into Pearl Harbour and keep them there until he gets more fuel forward to support them.
I’ve promised my sub commanders medals if they sink TK as well as CV, BB and CA.
I’m going to move IJN subs to cover the usual routes to PH plus approaches to places like Samoa, Fiji and Noumea and hope for some TK kills.

I’m a fair way through turn 2 orders. All industry and land orders done. All IJAAF done.
IJAAF will sweep major allied air bases and send bombers at ground targets on the landing beaches, plus a few select major allied air bases.
I don’t have enough escorts so I will try to focus on 1 air base per day in each theatre and move the target each day.
I’m expecting allied CAP to get at some of the bombers, but I’m willing to take a few IJA bomber losses in the first week to try and crush allied air power in Malaya and Luzon.

Navy air and task force orders still to go.
KB fighters will provide CAP and LRCAP over landing sites in Malaya. The Vals will focus on ASW and Kates will provide close in naval search and prepare for short range unescorted naval attacks. Land based naval air groups will help the IJAAF to try and close an allied airfield in each theatre.
I might finish orders tonight, if not tomorrow night.

RE Philippines invasion. I try to land just south of Manila at the base whose name escapes me. You may cut off the Philippine units which usually move north into Manila. I find this route is quicker into Manila and avoids the extra time for Allies to consolidate into, and fortify Manila.

Turn 2 is away!
I’m expecting the allies to throw 100% CAP in the air, so I need my fighter sweeps to do well.
I thought about grounding bombers this turn to clear some allied fighters for a day but decided to send them anyway.
I’m expecting some bomber losses but hope it’s not too many...
I figure I need to keep getting hits on Singapore, Manila and Clark Field airfields to try and stop forts from being built.
That will probably cost me a few bombers for the first couple of days but we will soon see.

KB moves about 5 hexes off Kuantan and Mersing to provide LRCAP with what I hope is enough CAP still over itself...
Crew aboard the surface combat task forces in the landing hexes are ready at their AA guns...
LRCAP Zeros have been set at 5k and 10k feet over both Kuantan and Mersing to try and counter the RAF, especially low flying Brit TBs.
I need both Kota Bahru and Kuantan airfields captured asap to move IJAAF fighters to both.

HQ North China Area Army
Mongol Garrison Army: enemy movement detected towards Paotow. This sector will be consolidated by MGA and a few supporting IJA regulars. The plan is to push the Chinese back towards Yenan, garrison this area and transfer IJA regulars to NCAA reserve.
1st Army: enemy movement detected east towards Taiyuan. 1st Army will consolidate this sector while also conducting a limited advance west to meet the oncoming enemy in the mountains. 1st Army will then attack west along the high road to Sian, but this will be a supporting attack for the main effort by 20th Army to the south. Enemy movement also detected from hex 88,39 back towards Yenan, which is good. I will let them withdraw.
20th Army: moving by rail from Manchukuo, mostly to Anyang. Enemy movement detected out of hex 88,43 to the NW which is good. They would have been attacked and likely withdrawn to Chengchow. 20th Army will shock across the river into Chengchow in about a week.
12th Army: will clear the open country up to the Chengchow-Sinyang railway, to support 20th Army to the north and link up with 6th Area Army to the south.
The aim is to clear rear areas and form a solid front with clear railways in NCAA by the end of December.

8 Dec 41 - early reports in from the front lines

At sea: lots of sub and ASW contacts around Pearl Harbour and the Luzon invasion beaches.
Lots of reports of Vals flying from KB hitting subs off Malaya.

In Malaya: Mersing and Kota Bahru are captured. 22 Indian Bde defends and delays at Kuantan...
In the air, wave after wave of low flying allied bombers are shot down, including a B17 flying at 5k’ by a zero. No hits on ships!

In the Philippines: San Fernando and Pt Princesa captured.
In the air, allied CAP is concentrated over Clark Field and they get through the escort to down some bombers, which was expected but still not fun to watch.
A fair few of my strikes were scrubbed due to weather... a second unescorted bombing raid was untouched by CAP as it must have been on the ground rearming. I’ll concentrate all fighters to sweep Clark tomorrow.

Borneo, NW coast: landing sites all captured. A flight of unescorted Kates sink a few xAKL but Dutch fighters flying from Kuching get some kills...

9 Dec 41 orders have been sent.
China: lots of troops moving, thanks to some brilliant pre war logistics planning to position so many trains in the right places!
Hong Kong Force arrives and will recon by artillery, with air recon and some old bombers overhead.
Luzon: some Zeros move forward to San Fernando. A mass of fighters will sweep Clark followed by escorted bomber raids on the airfield again. I noticed some allied groups may be suffering from low morale as they were breaking off their attacks early. Morale in all my air groups is high except the one Nell group that got a touch up, but it is still >50 so will fly. 65th Bde will occupy Aparri with follow up forces on the way.
Malaya: troops ashore have plenty of supply for the next few days so all amphib task forces will withdraw to collect follow up forces. KB will move a few hexes so CAP can provide cover as I’m expecting RAF remnants of bomber groups to come at these task forces again.
After drawing attention to itself, 22 Indian Bde will be bombed by every IJAAF bomber in range and a BB task force to boot prior to another Deliberate Attack going in. Sweeps and bombing of Singapore to remain an IJNAF operation.
Borneo: I have nothing to cover Miri this turn so expect the B17s to go after the Oil wells. I should have sent a Claude or Nate group there but only just thought of it... fix that next turn. An AA Regt has been bought out from Japan and is en route.
SEAF: small SNLF elements en route to occupy various targets. I’m wary of aggressive use of Catalinas and HMAS Adelaide but there’s not much I can counter them with yet.

Turns are getting quicker to turn around with a lot less mouse clicks.
All industry expansion is now done for the next few months.
A general reorganisation if merchant shipping is still underway. I’m organising ships by class at Sasebo and sending the larger xAK that need lengthy conversions to Kure. Some of the smaller conversions are also starting in “forward” areas like Saigon and Pescadores but only for smaller ships in case B17s target those ports.
The B17s were on naval strike last turn so left Miri oil fields alone. I don’t expect that to continue.
KB is retiring to rearm torpedo sorties then go back out hunting.
CL Boise was spotted by Mavis patrol near Cebu with 10 ships in the task force. Two separate IJN CA+DD task forces have been sent in from opposite directions. If I can clear Boise out of the area I will launch the Mindanao invasion task forces.

Malaya: a tank regt cut the railway west of Mersing with 5 Div following up to block allied moves to singapore. Kuantan is captured and the engineers set to work filling in the holes in the runway. The focus for the next few days will be in the air until more follow up forces arrive on slow boats.

Luzon: the third landings should go in tomorrow. I’ll post a map of Luzon next. Movement still showing out of Manila, I hope it is being abandoned.

SUMMARY FOR 11 DEC 41
China and Luzon are heating up. Malaya is still waiting for follow up forces.
SEAF small forces start occupying vacant bases. I need to get more naval search down here. 23rd Air Flotilla will move here shortly and handover the Luzon operation to the IJAAF’s 5th Air Div.

CL Boise is spotted moving south towards Tarakan so Mindanao invasion task forces are readying. This will mostly be a SNLF operation. I have a 4BB task force of Mauban that will sweep through the area first, rearm at Cam Ranh Bay if it has to, before coming back. I think there are just allied PT boats and subs in the area now, but I’m going to keep the surface combat forces close to the transports just in case.

In Burma, I can see xAK unloading at Rangoon but there are 50+ fighters guarding the skies. I need Oscars here to challenge the AVG but the few I have are about to clear the skies over Singapore. 3rd Air Div in Thailand will get the first new models off the production lines. IJAAF Base Forces are moving into Northern Thailand to hack fighter strips from the jungle. Zeros from IJN 21st Air Flotilla might join in too, but it’s probably a week or two before I can start putting sweeps over Rangoon.

All quiet on the Northern Front but I’m moving naval search up there to keep watch.

I have a Division two days march away which might make it in time, or if not it should retake it. 23 x L3Y2 Tina dropping Yokosuka 3rd SNLF at Bayombong – Allied troops have moved in to contest Bayombong. I’m guessing it’s an Infantry Regt so we will see if the paras can hold the mountains for a few days until 65th Bde and artillery arrive.
9 x Ki-56 Thalia transporting 27th JAAF AF Bn to Kota Bharu – awaiting ships so I thought I’d put the transport planes to some use to get some aviation support squads across to Malaya.
