Andrew, is there a plan to reconcile the underlying map data and your map overlay in terms of base names? For instance, the mouseover gives Khota Bharu whereas your map says Kota Bharu, etc.

Also, Batan Island should be listed as the Batan Islands (plural), or if you really want to be correct then call it the Batanes or Batanes Islands or Bathnes Islands (this is the usage found on the US Military Academy maps). Batan Island itself is the largest formation of the group and was the first Japanese invasion point of the Philippines, but there's an entire province of Batanes (Bathnes) comprised of the smaller islands of Dequey, Siayan, Mavudis, North Island, Yami, plus some islets.

I wonder if there's any place on your map for more channels and straits. For instance, the Torres Strait between Australia and New Guinea, the Karimata Strait between Sumatra and Dutch Borneo, etc. In regard to the latter, the Java Sea would be correctly placed to southeast of its present location on the map, more or less with Dutch Borneo to the north and Java to the south (put the text between Bali and Pinrang).

Ocean Islands: you already have Nauru, and if you'd include Ocean (Banaba) Island as a base and add some resources to both sites the Japanese would then have a better reason to occupy these bases as they did historically (for the phosphates there).

In the game, the 21st Division starts at San Marcelino. I believe instead that General MacArthur assiged this to the 31st Division (Major General Clifford Blummel), which in the game begins at Bataan (Maj. Gen. Ybut).

Regarding Frank Jack Fletcher: They should have named an oiler after him instead. -- Irrelevant

No plan as such, but I do look at any anomalies that I, or others, find. Several mismatches have been fixed so far. I will take a look at this one as well. If you know of any others please let me know.

Sometimes, in the official map and scenarios, the base names seem to be named after an actual base, rather than a general geographical area. e.g. the use of Gili Gili instead of Milne Bay. I will have a look at "Batan Island" to see what I think it should be called.

I did leave out the strait names on my map. I planned to add some, but I never got around to it. I will definitely consider adding some in for any future update, though, as I like to have names for features where possible.

Another thing missing from my map - mainly because I never got a satisfactory font worked out - are the river names. Again I would like to add these in at some time.
Ocean Islands: you already have Nauru, and if you'd include Ocean (Banaba) Island as a base and add some resources to both sites the Japanese would then have a better reason to occupy these bases as they did historically (for the phosphates there).

In my latest map revision I added the art for Ocean Island, so that adding it as a base could be an option. If there is a consensus for adding an Ocean Island base it can easily be done for any scenario using my map. You are not the first person to ask for it, so another step towards a consensus has been made.

Resources have already been added to Nauru, but the amount was kept small as resource centres also have the annoying function of generating supply.
In the game, the 21st Division starts at San Marcelino. I believe instead that General MacArthur assiged this to the 31st Division (Major General Clifford Blummel), which in the game begins at Bataan (Maj. Gen. Ybut).

OOB is not my stong suit. This is a question for Don Bowen.

Thanks for the comments. They are always welcome.

Andrew, please put Saigon on your list, too, then. For sure that one's off.

Here's what I meant about the placement of the Java Sea in distinction to the Karimata Strait. (This map, by the way, is from the U.S. Military Academy WWII collection: World War Two -- Asia-Pacific)

Regarding the Ocean Islands: it's a pity that resource=supply had to be hardcoded rather than taken care of in the editor on a base-by-base case. I won't rant on that, but I view this decision as very dumb as it frustrates the effort, just for example, to make sense out of why the Japanese occupied these two places in 1942. The generic nature of supply only exacerbates that.

I would suggest cutting back on resource production wherever possible, enough to afford the Japanese sufficient resources at home but no more. This might tend to increase the perceived value of the Ocean Islands, though I doubt in practice all that much. Still, a small increase in interest there would be better than no increase at all.

Re the seemingly necessary consensus to affect such change: I hope I can say this without offending anyone, but I don't know. Either way, here goes.

I'm not much on first forming a happy consensus when it comes to moving ahead. I find that while majorities usually rule in practice they are wrong in fact to a worrying degree. It is the "majority" in the Matrix forum which continues to come up with bad ideas which in turn influence the institution of bad changes to the model in the form of new features such as . . . CV TFs in base/coastal hexes will not operate their air assets at 100% . . . or the beyond-ludicrous Allied Sub doctrine . . . and so on.

I don't claim to have all the answers, never did. But my experience tells me that decision by committee is never the most efficient way around the old barn. Listen to everyone's input? Sure. But at some juncture common sense must rule.

Now that's only my guiding principle in this matter. Whether or not the inclusion of Ocean Island as a base with resources is a good idea is something I do not know. I only suggest it as a reasonable possibility to increase interesting play.

Tris,

I did not mean to come off sounding like i was not listening.
Between Don and I we basically know everything about the Wildcat.
No internet site is going to help more than maybe a tiny bit.

I agree that the wildcat is one of the most important Allied aircraft of the war. I also feel it is often overrated by gamers as seen with the default Matrix mnvr value. I lowered it a point basically across the board.

But, i can not add an extra slot of carrier capable in the editor. I just don't have any. I still have 6 or 8 land based allied slots available, I think i have used all of the Japanese slots whether carrier or land based.

I gave the Wildcat a total of 5 slots as it is which is more than any other aircraft except the Zero.
Many people wanted the Hellcat to have 6 versions rather than the
3 in the game now. I had people complaining for lack of Sea Hurricane models and i did split the Seafire into an early mark and a later mark instead of the 1 Matrix started with. Some people wanted 3 Seafires.

So saying that I am missing out on reality for not modeling Wildcats accurately does not help. I realize they are not perfect. I am doing the best i can with a limited DB.

I could use 4 more mixed Japanese slots and 6 or 7 more allied carrier slots. I don't have them and I doubt if Matrix will make a DB size change at this point.

ChezDaJez,

You are correct, i was having a cranial rectal inversion.
The Dauntless will be at 4/3 range, not 3/2. I was thinking of a system that showed standard/max range and load where our game is max range/standard range.

The Kate info i have does not match yours but it is close, i figured total range after forming up of 490nm. That will give 5/4 range.

Sorry about that, range figures for many aircraft are very hard to find.
The only source i have for the kate list range as 980km.
Now, is that ferry range? With Torpedo? with a 500kg bomb? What?

I looked at similar aircraft and decided that range was with torpedo.

I think this means i made some mistakes in the Alpha ranges.. sigh...

I understand the problem with slots. If you don't have any to work with, that's it.

My message is only that the Wildcat was the most prolific fighter of the war and happened to be on the cutting edge in the Pacific. Then again the FM-2 version, a good fighter in its own right, was there for the long haul. I guess I want to say it's overall impact on the outcome of the war could hardly be overstated.

The rating for MVR is one of the large problems with the air model. It's too all-inclusive, has no exact meaning. It's as if someone were to open a debate on the maneuverability of the Zero (which is apparently what Gary started with for a baseline to judge from his games) and said blithely, "The Zero was the most maneuverable airplane in 1941." So what does that mean? Maneuverable how? It sure couldn't roll!

Well, whatever. As I don't know how those ratings plug in I couldn't make sense of it if I tried. I'd be careful, though, of changing those values a whole lot. Gary has so many of them floating around that the change of one here and there could well have unintended consequences down the road.

What is the problem with Saigon?

Further map discussion should probably be moved to the "Scenario Design / Game Editor" forum.

The conversation sort of dried up, ma'am.

Pop Quiz!

1) What actor read that line?

2) What former professional football player appeared in this film?

3) What other former professional football player appeared in this film?

Bonus Question: 30 points (three parts)

What woman was this line addressed to, what was her original "claim to fame"? and who was the leading man in her first film?

Seriously, Ian, I told Ron I wasn't too hot on playing because of the Kate screwup, that until that was fixed we ought to hold off (and hopefully that will be rectified by the time v1.5 comes out, but only Mike knows if it will be). Anyway, Ron more or less agreed.

So in a way I guess this thread is dead until then.

It can (and I presume will) be again, but first fix the Kates issue (what good is it to test a simulation like this when Kates fly the same normal range as SBDs?), and do it with v1.5, which is really more like what CHS was aiming to mate with anyway.

Has the Kate issue been resolved yet? I'd like to start up the CHS test again with Ron as soon as v1.5 is released.

It was said to Marian McCargo and she was a tennis star before going into movies and there seems to be is a sports theme here. I'll give up on the rest of the points there, not knowing anything else about Marian McCargo, *BUT* according to IMDB, that would make the leading man in her first film James Coburn (Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round).

Well, as it turns out you're about a week late and most of a decent thread short. Otherwise, good job. [8D]
