Report of January 31st 1942

DEI

During the night first troops destined to the Molucca’s area landed in Boela, on Ceram I.

At the moment there is no trace of Force Z. I will proceed with the invasion of Amboina and the three small island in the Arafura Sea.
After that I’ll go for Timor, before taking the Celebes.
Manado is now at 4 size, and I based there some Nell and Betty to welcome Force Z.

Borneo

Chuck sent against baby-KB, situated on the northern approach of the Makassar Strait, 7 torpedo bombers T.IVa escorted by 12 Brewster 339. While I lost one Zero, my CAP managed to shot down 3 Brwester and 2 T.Iva. No hit on carrier.
Later 9 Beaufort, escorted by 2 339D attacked invasion fleet but scored no hit. 1 Beaufort has been shot down.
In the morning surface force, escorting invasion force, shelled Samarinda and destroyed 1 Vildebeest, 1 T.IVa and 1 Brewster 339D, causing some damages to the base. Tomorrow this force will shell also Balikpapan.

Philippines

My troops assaulted San Marcelino and found some 600 enemy soldiers still in the town and were forced to fight house after house.

India

RN must withdraw 1 BB+2 DD. This is a good new.

China

I spotted one enemy LCU unit north of Tabun-Nur. I’m sending there some Mongolian Cavalry units already in the area.

Report of February 1st, 1942

Cent Pac

Tonight I lost another subs, north of Hawaii, the I-4.
In the afternoon Fuso and Yamashiro led a bombardement against Palmyra but the damages have been minimal. In addition CL Oi hit a mine and is now at sys 31/flt 33 damages.

Borneo

TF Kongo shelled Balikpapam, as planeed, destroying 3 aircraft and causing a lot of damages.
Before dusk the troops landed in Samarinda occupied the enemy base, destroying also 12 enemy planes.
My recon planes spotted a big enemy TF, composed by 8 ships, off Pinrang (in the Celebes). The TF is including 2 CA. The recon didn’t tell me anything else, even the heading. I suppose this is the Force Z. The invasion fleet has completed the unloading and will run away as fast as possible to Davao. Same orders for TF Kongo. I cannot stand with the Kongo in front of PoW and Repulse.
The worst news is that we’ll have thunderstorm and so my Nell and Betty based in Manado and the torpedo and dive bombers based in Tarakan (Kate, Val and Ann) will remain on the ground.
Baby-KB will also move to a position nort of Tomini. When Force Z will leave the area, she will move in the Ceram and Banda Sea, to support operations in the Arafura Sea.

Burma

Enemy planes based in Rangoon are continuing to raid Tavoy, but the afld is already closed, even if they destroyed one more Oscar already damaged.

DEI

The Nav Gds unit landed yesterday in Boela occupied the base.
The invasion fleets for the Arafura Sea is now off Talau I. I hope they will have enough time to reach the islands, unload and escape, before Force Z arrives.
Anyway in Palau the TF with Nagato, Mutsu, Ise, Hyuga, 5 CA and other minors ships is refuelling. The TF will depart tomorrow and will escort the invasion ships to their targets.

Report of February 2nd, 1942

Malaya

Troops in Johore attacked allied garrison, scoring a 0:1 odds but reducing to 4 (again!), the fort. I paid for this result 2426 casualties and 32 guns, vs 981 casualties and 52 guns for the brits.

China

Chuck tried to attack defense perimetre of the XX Inf Bde but my soldiers fought a great battle and repulsed them.

Cent Pac

KB is 3 days from Kwajalein. Because the two american carriers attacked Rabaul two days ago, I’ve decided to send Nagumo to Truk and from there south, to catch them.

Borneo

Force Z or whatever was the TF spotted yesterday disappeared.
Baby-KB is now north of Tomini, heding for the Banda Sea, to support invasions.

Report of February 3rd , 1942

Cent Pac

In the last days I’ve lost too much SS. I need to recall some of them to avoid other losses. Maybe Chuck will recall also his ASW TFs.

DEI

I made a good air raid against Palmbang afld, with 44 Nell escorted by 25 Zero. The allied losses are of 8 a/c. 11 Nell damaged.

Enemy bombers attacked in the morning the convoy directed towards Amboina, without result, and in the afternoon they were distracted by TF Nagato so that the merchant ships were free to proceed.

Force Z disappeared from Borneo. I suppose she’s now heading fast to Amboina area. I will risk the landing in Amboina because the transport ships are now only 2 hex away but the other convoys destined to Arafura Sea are too far from their target. They will stop at Morotai and wait for developments.

TF Nagato will shell Amboina and will stay for a day as escort. Baby-KB is now near Manado and will run south for one day more.

Philippines

The troops that were in San Marcelino arrived at Clark Field today. The siege started.

Report of February 4th , 1942

DEI

Landing in Amboina started tonight. Minefields and two enemy subs tried to attack transport ships and escorts, without success.
In the afternoon a total of 9 Martin 139 and 8 Hudson attacked TF Nagato, scoring no hits.
Later TF Nagato shelled Amboina, destroying 2 Martin 139, 3 guns, 3 vehicles and inflicting 314 casualties.

Burma

Chuck is continuing to bombard Tavoy afld with all the Burma/Malaya aviation. That’s fine fore me. Since Tavoy is already closed it’s makes any difference, but until he gives attention to Tavoy he doesn’t send aircrafts in Malaya.

Australia

Recon from Lae spotted a big enemy TF west of Thursday I. that included 3 CA. I suppose this is the same TF that attacked Rabaul. When the 2 carriers attacked, recon said 2 CA. If the carriers are in this TF I have to leave the area asap. 56. Inf is unloaded apart a small part of troops but is short of supplies. I leave the unit there ready to attack and I will unload supplies later.
All others invasion TF will move towards Palau.

Report of February 5th – 6th , 1942

Really nothing special happened during those two days.
I took the decision to invade Buka and Tulagi. In Tulagi Chuck has established a patrol base and I need to destroy it.
By now I’m loading the troops and I’ll do more recon to see if the two enemy carriers are in the area or were in Arafura Sea two days ago.

I-173 sunk today. Another SS lost. In the last week I’ve lost

Anyway escort shot down 4 Wirraway and 2 Hurricane without loosing a plane.

Philippines

The 38. Inf division unloaded in Legaspi and now is marching north, towards Naga, to help the 2. Inf division to occupy the city and then push towards Manila.

China

Four chinese inf units arrived at Yangku. Intel says 4600 men. I’ll try to kick them away with the two infantry brigade that defend the city.

Report of February 8th , 1942

Cent Pac

Another sub, I-172, sunk tonight. I don’t know how much I’ve lost of them during the last days, but I think around 10.
I’ve lost 1 Nell over French Frigate Shoals. I intend to hit the patrol tender anchored there.

Philippines

My Nell hit with 4 torpedoes and sunk one AK in Manila harbor. I don’t know if the ship already unloaded or not. I need to be more careful about the resuppling of the enemy. In the last days I forgot to switch Nell on naval attack until I saw some ships already in Manila.

Another enemy AK received 1 torpedo off Naga.

SW Pac

Betty based in Lae placed 4 torpedoes and sunk AK Sipora, in PM harbor.

China

My intel officier in Yangku has been sent in prison. The enemy force were 25670, with 185 guns, and not only 4600 men with 25 guns, and my troops crushed on them. I’ve lost 1866 men and 46 guns for nothing, inflicting to the enemy only 272 casualties.

One enemy unit reached Tabun-Nur. My Mongolian Cav divisions are still 25 miles away.

Report of February 9th , 1942

DEI

Tonight my troops started to unload in Balikpapan. I hope that Force Z is not in the area because the transport ships have not heavy escort. I have TF Kongo but it’s not enough against PoW and R.
One dutch SS tried to attack the convoy but was hit once by the escort. And in the afternoon dutch and british planes attacked the ships at anchor, but LRCAP flying from Tarakan furnished good protection and only one AK has been hit and sunk with 3 torpedoes.
TF Kongo responded shelling the base and destroying 3 planes and inflicting 355 casualties.

China

The chinese responded to my shock attack of yesterday with another shock attack. The attacker has been stopped and 1054 chinese killed.

At Tabun Nur the chinese attacked the city, but the militia defending the city hold the ground.and the base.

DEI

My troops in Balikpapan attacked but didn’t succeed on occupy the enemy base. That’s surprised me

Philippines

With the help of 38. Inf Div, the 2. attacked at Naga, reducing the fort to 2.

Malaya

The main event during these three days is sure the delib attack against Johore. Odds 1:1 and fort reduced to 3.

SW Pac

I landed some troops that captured Buka I. I will now use those troops to occupy other bases in the area.
Another convoy is transporting troops in Lunga and a bombardement TF will shell Tulagi, where Chuck has installed a float base.

33. Inf Div reached finally Taun Gy. The unit will attacked and occupied the base on the 14th.

DEI

On the night of 14th, TF Nagato, with 4 BB, shelled Balikpapan: 1069 casualties and a lot of damages to the afld.
On her way back home, during the morning the TF has been attacked by 21 Martin. No hit and 1 bomber shot down. Another 6 Martin came again in the afternoon with no results.

Cent Pac

Nell from Midway damaged with 1 torpedo two AK anchored in French Frigate Shoals.

China

The evacuation of the 19. Mixed Bde has been completed. Since I changed the HQ in order to pick up the unit, I will use the brigade to occupy some bases in Sumatra.

Report of February 17th , 1942

SW Pac

Today I started to land in Tulagi. I will do further landing in SW Pac, to force Chuck to respond. When he will do it, I will attack somewhere else. I intend to keep him busy on more front than I can.
In the afternoon Tulagi was in my hands. 1 PBY was found, destroyed, in the bay.

DEI

A BF arrived in Amboina, escorted by four DD, on the 17th. During the night of 18th, the TF has been attacked by enemy TF with 3 dutch CL. My DD fought bravely on defending the transport. DD Fuyo sunk
In the morning came a disaster. US and at least one british carriers (two US I suppose, due to the number of planes) attacked the TF on the way back. The 6 Zero coming from Menado tried to defend the ships but the enemy planes were too much. The other 3 DD were sunk.
Then the dutch CL’s attacked again, to finish the job. Unbelievable no transport were sunk, but a lot are damaged and will sunk tomorrow.
It was a bloody day, but my fucking bombers in Menado didn’t take-off? Why? For thunderstorm over Amboina area? But enemy carriers launch their aircraft. I really don’t understand. I have 50 bombers (Nell and Betty) there on naval attack but they remained on the ground. [:@][:@]
Baby-KB was ont his way to Amboina, escorted by Kongo and other surface ships, but recon spotted also enemy BB south of Amboina so I will keep my force away. The disaster already happened I don’t want that it is worst. At least now I know were US carriers are.
I’m thinking about a revenge. KB is now in Truk. My small invasion forces can continue in the SW without her. She will run as fast as possible to Palau, refuel and than go to Amboina. I want that island in the next days but I need supply for 56. Inf Bde.
KB will destroy everything in the area. Maybe enemy forces will run away but at least Amboina with the 4size afld will by mine.

Report of February 18th , 1942

DEI

Two AP, damaged yesterday off Amboina, sunk today, while another completed her task, unloading supply and men on the enemy base. Another 4 AP were sunk by enemy carriers and dutch CL.
But today was the day of the revenge. Bombers based in Menado, attacked enemy carrier TF. 13 Betty, 6 Nell and 4 Zero arrived over the enemy ships, were 26 Sea Hurricane and 12 F4F-3 were on CAP. My Zero fought with enormous valor. Two of them were shot down, togheter with 3 Nell, but the rest of the attacking planes passed through enemy CAP screen and aimed on enemy ships. First to be attacked was CA Pensacola, no hit. After that, Nell and Betty attacked CV Lexington and placed one torpedo. After a couple of minutes another torpedo hit the big carrier under the water line causing extended damages. An ammo depot also exploded. My planes left the enemy TF leaving the Lex on fire. The carriers didn’t sunk, but I’m sure she will be out of service for months.
I hope that my bombers will have a chance tomorrow. I transferred 52 more Betty from Palau to Manado, setting them on max range.

Malaya

Today my troops attacked Johore and reduced, again, the fort level down to 2.

Japan

CV Junyo entered in service. She is now in Japan waiting for escort ships. She will lead invasion of Aleutinians Is. in a few days.

The enemy carriers are gone. KB will enter in the Ceram Sea tomorrow. I want to conquer Amboina asap. Lexington should be in Kendari or Darwin. If report was exactly, the damage were extesive and she cannot sail farther by now. Maybe I’ll send Nagumo in the Banda Sea. I could port attack both enemy bases.
When Amboina job is finished, KB will return to Truk and then I’ll decide.

SW Pac

Lunga has been occupied today.

Japan

Invasion fleet for the Aleutinians Is. sail today from Toyko to Etorofu Jima.

Report of February 20th – 21st , 1942

Nothing special happened during this two days.
Anyway my recon spotted 32 bombers in Kai Is. I’m not so sure to send KB in this area. They are a lot of bombers and if they come all toghether one could pass through the CAP and place one bomb on one of my CV. I’ have to think about a bit, but maby KB will operate better in the Pacific area. I’ll wait until the 56. Inf Bde will do the next attack. She need only more supplies. If the unit will conquer Amboina, a BF with 100 av support is already in place and the 4 size of the afld will do a good job in place of KB.
The decision already taken is that I cannot invade Kai I. with the small forces previously assigned. Two small NFL units are sure not enough.

Report of February 22nd - 23rd , 1942

Malaya

I attacked again in Johore, reducing the fort to 2. My troops are responding well and the Malayan campaign is going fine at the moment.
On the 23rd the fatigue & distruption level are low again. The troops are ordered to attack tomorrow. I want Johore in one week.

Borneo

At Balikpapan, my troops were repulsed again by the dutch garrison.
On the night of 23rd CL Dragon attacked one AK while unloading supplies. After that the ship was ungovernable and went south, on fire. She was attacked again by planes during the afternoon of 23rd and sunk.

Cent Pac

On the 23rd I-154 placed one torpedo on 1 AK E of Palmyra. The ship transports troops. I hope this torpedo will make them shark food.

Dutch New Guinea

A dutch SS torpedoed one AK while she was landing troops at Babo. The ship was already damaged yesterday, and sunk immediately. Fortunately the troops were already on the beach.

DEI

My decision not to enter in the Banda Sea with the KB prooved to be the right one. Since Nagumo ordered to invert the course, a lot of Hudson and Martin attacked Amboina and the transport that intended to unload. At least 20 planes a day attacked in separate raids. Maybe it’s not a great number, but I suppose it’s enough to place one bomb on one of my CV.
Meanwhile 1. Para Rgt was launched over Makale, west of Kendari, and occupied the base.

SW Pac

KB is one day from Truk. She will refuel and than I’ll send Nagumo around Fiji and Samoa Is. Imperial High Command decided two days ago that Pago-Pag will be the next target for the SSD. I want to be sure that there is no important ground unit based there.

DEI

A dutch SS sunk an AK that tried to unload supllies to the 56th Inf Bde.
Meanwhile few infantry men captured Babo. I will air transport there a B.F. to install a fighter base and then I will expand the base.

Malaya

The brits evacuated Johore, that falled today, finally. No I can concentrate myself on Singapore. The problem is that when my troops will cross the Johore causeway they will shock attack.

Cent Pac

KB has refuelled in Truk. She will leave tomorrow, heading for Fiji and Samoa, for a recon mission. I hope also to find some reinforcement transports.
I’m concentrating 4 replenishement’s TK south of Nauru, to support operations.

SW Pac

I based in Rabaul some Ro subs. They will operate off PM and off Noumea, to attack enemy sea lanes.
