Summary of Operations 10/3/43

Post by wneumann »

Summary of Operations 10/3/43 - this being the 1,000th post of this string

Central Pacific: Very light or no Jap air patrol activity reported by U.S. subs near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, Truk, and off Japanese home islands. No reported contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships or ASW in any of these locations.

No report on detected Jap ships at anchor for either Kwajalein or Truk.

F-5A recon over Canton Is reporting no fighters on CAP, 1 Jap TF, 59 aircraft (1 fighter, 25 bombers), 16 Jap LCU's.

South Pacific: Sectors other than Pago Pago reporting quiet.

Day 18 of Pago Pago Operations - Today's main news is from ground combat ashore... Japanese resistance beginning to collapse on Pago Pago. Weather forecast for Pago Pago area is precipitation.

Situation on Savaii and Upolu continues to be an uneasy "status quo", U.S. ground forces on Savaii and Upolu are unable to launch effective attacks due to supply point shortage, defending Japanese ground units not in sufficient strength to counterattack. Overall condition of U.S. LCU's on Upolu and Savaii is fairly good given the current supply situation. Invading U.S. ground units lost on average less than 5% of elements destroyed during landing ops or from Jap air attacks on the invasion fleet. U.S. combat divisions on Upolu and Savaii each have approx 80% of their elements undisrupted and operational.

A group of several supply convoys departed Penhryn Is this game turn for Pago Pago under escort from the U.S. Carrier Main Force - expected arrival in 5 days. HQ I Amphib Corps and 37th Division (prepped for Canton) are now re-prepping for Upolu to reinforce ground combat ops there. These LCU are being moved to Upolu as quickly as possible as soon as available shipping capacity for this can be assembled - they're going in with whatever prep level for Upolu they can muster. A third priority of shipping to Pago Pago is more engineers to reinforce base facility repairs. A number of Seabee units are now available at Penhryn Is for this. These are priority items for reinforcing U.S. forces in the Pago Pago area.

AAR's of Pago Pago and Upolu actions follow.

South Pacific: All sectors other than Pago Pago area reporting quiet.

Day 22 of Pago Pago Operations - Weather forecast for Pago Pago is partly cloudy. Situation map of Pago Pago sea area follows.

U.S. Carrier Main Force and leading transport TF's are now off Pago Pago, though several slower transport TF's separated from the stack. Naval search planes from the Carrier Force spotted two Jap submarines (I-30 & RO-66) in Savaii base hex. I-30 was attacked and hit.

One of the trailing U.S. transport TF's (shown on map below) was hit by a Jap LBA naval attack strike. Ships in the transport TF attacked in this strike were mainly small coastal AK's that had successfully evacuated from the Philippines and DEI to Australia during early 1942 - I sent these small AK eastward from Australia to the U.S. "main front" and had them in reserve for use in supply missions of this type - being smaller, "cheaper" and (unfortunately) slower than larger U.S. transports.

Several other naval attack strikes went after the U.S. Carrier Main Force. An estimated 62 Japanese planes (mostly G4M Betty) were destroyed by USN fighter CAP mainly over the Carrier Force. AAR's of naval air strikes follow.

Summary of Operations 10/9/43

Post by wneumann »

Summary of Operations 10/9/43

U.S. shipyards are receiving a considerable amount of business. West coast shipyards are completing 6/43 upgrades on the final group of Liberty class AK along with refits (repairing < 5 system damage) on a number of ships. A small number of 10/43 upgrades for Perch class SS and a number of ships in small AK & AP classes are being completed as quickly as possible before the rush of repairs and refits for ships returning from the Pago Pago operations.

Most of the transports and surface warships involved in the Pago Pago invasion have passed through Penhryn Is and moving northward via Christmas Is for repair, refit, or to be stationed in a more central location for future ops. As ships from Penhryn are arriving at Christmas Is, they are being "sorted out" as to their status (repair, refit, or reserve for future ops) and then routed to their next destination. The majority of ships passing through Christmas Is fall into one or three categories.

1) Undamaged ships ready for immediate use in future ops are being retained at bases in the Line Islands with some ships routed to Pearl Harbor.

2) Most ships with 1-2 system damage are being routed to Pearl Harbor to undergo refit there - the Pearl Harbor shipyard is being set to allow the quickest turnaround of as many small refits as possible. Plans are to keep ships with heavier damage and most larger ships requiring refit or minor repair out of the Pearl Harbor shipyard except for emergency repairs required to allow them to safely reach the U.S. west coast.

3) More heavily damaged ships along with most smaller ships requiring a refit with 3 or more system damage and large ships requiring only a refit or minor repairs are being dispatched from Christmas Is to shipyards on the U.S. west coast to complete their repair or refit. The intent here is having the largest ships and ships requiring the most intensive repair in U.S. west coast shipyards, keeping Pearl Harbor available as a forward base for quick refits or emergency repairs. Any heavily damaged ships judged unable to reach the U.S. west coast safely will proceed to Pearl Harbor until sufficiently repaired to where then can reach the U.S. west coast safely to complete repairs.

A number of the most heavily damaged ships returned to Penhryn from the Pago Pago invasion ops with fire and/or float damage. These ships are remaining at anchor in Penhryn until float and fire damage are repaired to zero before continuing on to Christmas Is and then to either Pearl or the U.S. west coast. Many of these damaged ships have already departed Penhryn with the few remaining ones expected to depart for Christmas Is in the next few game turns. Penhryn is a size 4 port with 140K supply on hand and HQ Asiatic Fleet located there. The nearest AR ships are at Christmas Is and these can be dispatched to Penhryn as needed.

Now with today's news....

Central Pacific: U.S. submarines near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, Truk, off Japanese home islands reporting very light or no Japanese air patrol activity. No reported contacts at any of the above locations between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships or ASW.

23 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base, no report on ships at Truk
F-5A recon over Canton Is reporting no Jap TF (-1 from last report), 16 Jap LCU's.

South Pacific: All sectors other than Pago Pago area reporting quiet

Day 24 of Pago Pago Operations - Weather forecast for Pago Pago once again is overcast. Jap submarines I-30 and RO-66 remain at Savaii.

U.S. AK Antonio sinks this game turn during ship damage adjustment phase from damage received earlier.

Confirmation recieved that Japanese DD's Umikaze and Kawakaze have both sunk. These two DD were damaged when striking (Japanese-laid) mines in Pago Pago base hex on 10/5. DD Kawakaze was also atttacked and hit by U.S. carrier planes off Savaii on 10/8.

U.S. transports enter Upolu base hex during night ship movement phase and begin disembarking supply at daybreak - these transports hit by Jap LBA naval air strikes later in the daytime phases. AAR's follow.

Allied recon flights over Darwin, Exmouth, Port Moresby all report no detected activity or change in Jap forces.

U.S. sub Argonaut dropped a load of mines in Darwin base hex while enroute from Colombo back into the Pacific theatre.

A small transport TF reached Norfolk Is and is disembarking U.S. 55th Seabees to begin construction of base facilities. Summary of Operation 10/12/43

Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting no significant Jap air patrol activity near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, Truk, and off Japanese home islands. No reported contacts at any of the above locations between U.S. submarines and Japanese surface ships or ASW.

No report on detected Jap ships at anchor in Kwajalein or Truk bases.

South Pacific: All sectors other than Pago Pago reporting quiet.

Day 27 of Pago Pago Operations - Weather forecast for Pago Pago area is again heavy precipitation.

Heavy volume of Jap air patrols, also several Jap air attacks reported against U.S. subs operating in the Pago Pago area. SS Grayling hit and sunk at Savaii by Ki-48 Lily air patrol. SS Billfish attacked by G5N Liz west of Savaii - no damage reported.

As expected, the invasion of Pago Pago (or anywhere else I would have invaded) along Pillager's outer perimeter was going to be a form of World War I trench warfare in the South Pacific. Any invasion site on Pillager's outer perimeter is a frontal attack with a U.S. invasion force crossing a wide (12-15 hex or more) expanse of open sea, no available LBA support, no element of surprise. My choice of Pago Pago was the result of (1) this base being one of Pillager's less expected locations for a U.S. offensive and (2) greater distance of Pago Pago from the Japanese home islands and from Pillager's main bases in the interior of Japanese-controlled areas.

The quantity of Japanese LBA operating over the Pago Pago area is a major problem. The Jap LBA force Pillager has in place near Pago Pago includes a "core" of 150+ G4M Betty bombers based mainly on Wallis Is plus a force of fighters and IJA bombers operating from the uncaptured Jap base on Upolu. Unfortunately the only effective solution is (1) capture the base on Upolu - this will require a second landing force sent into Upolu to reinforce Americal & 1st Cavalry Divisions now on Upolu and (2) send in the U.S. Main Carrier Force to take on (and take out) the Japanese LBA without taking significant ship losses or damage.

Another possible step would be to launch a "second front" elsewhere in the Central or South Pacific - I have two fully-prepped LCU forces available (one for Canton Is, the second force for Wake).

Several problems here. (1) The quantity of effort still required to clear remaining Japanese resistance on Upolu and Savaii, and also get bases in the Pago Pago area to where they have operational airfield(s) and effectively oppose Jap LBA without support from the carrier forces. (2) While few ships other than transports were sunk in the Pago Pago invasion, a large number of ships (including most of the bombardment/surface combat ships) took considerable damage. It's an estimated 2-3 months before an effective U.S. shore bombardment force can be returned to action, 6 months or longer for it to return to full strength. (3) Pillager is holding the KB and most Japanese BB's in reserve. Available U.S forces to counter them are already committed or in drydock.

Jap ground forces launch bombardment attack on Upolu. 1st Cavalry and Americal Divisions on Upolu are in good shape and adequately supplied for the moment - sufficient to hold their ground but not enough for any type of offensive operations. My priority is keeping these two LCU operational and capable of continuing attacks to capture Upolu base when LCU reinforcements and supply arrive to do this.

Attacking force 13030 troops, 58 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 388
