Isn't it time (with runway damage now down to 0%), that you now flooded Pago Pago with Allied fighters to provide CAP and sweep Upolu.  If they are outside air transport range, temporarily load Marine fighter units onto Allied CVs and then fly them off deck from a safe stand off range.  That way you avoid risking sea transport and the slow unload times due to 100% port damage.

Alfred,

Being four game turns behind on posting AAR's (we're playing the 10/17 game turn now), the zero runway damage at Pago Pago didn't last beyond the 10/13 game turn - Pillager quickly "corrected" that turn of events.

In any event... there is one squadron of F4U's now on Pago Pago (they transferred into Pago Pago shortly after the base was captured), the planes in this squadron were very quickly damaged and base facilities on Pago Pago have been unable to repair these planes back to operational condition. There is sufficient supply points on hand and a base force LCU on Pago Pago with enough aviation support elements to recover damaged aircraft. The problem could be that airfield service damage level on Pago Pago is great enough where repair of damaged planes is very slow or no repair activity is going on at all.

As far as sending fighter squadrons to Pago Pago... the planes are available at Penhryn (nearly 200 fighters total - all P-47's, P-38's, and F4U's) and most if not all these planes can transfer directly from Penhryn to Pago Pago without using carriers. The problem I'm seeing with sending those squadrons to Pago Pago - once they're on Pago Pago and their planes become damaged for any reason, under the current situation those planes won't be repaired, they're going to remain grounded and become stationary targets for Pillager's air raids.

I'm seeing two things I'm going to need to do... (1) Send LCU reinforcements to Upolu and finish capturing the base on that island - this action will eliminate or push back the Japanese LBA now operating from Upolu (a considerable part of Jap air attacks in the Pago Pago area are being launched by LBA operating from the Upolu airfield still in Jap control). (2) send a convoy to land supply and a large enough horde of Seabees on Pago Pago to repair the airfield regardless of Japanese air bombing attacks. These steps will probably need to be done in the order I mentioned them above.

Only after both those actions are successfully accomplished will it be possible to get airbases on Pago Pago, Savaii, and Upolu sufficiently repaired to support air ops.

No problem posting the maps, haven't done them in a long time.

Cleaning up Pago Pago will take up much of my attention for the near future - "liberation" of Savaii and Upolu has to be completed. Without going too extensively into detail... it's going to be awhile before the next major amphibious operation. The ship losses at Pago Pago weren't that heavy, but the invasion left me with a large number of damaged ships and ships badly needing a refit. Shipyards on the U.S. west coast are now very busy.

While only BB Tennessee was sunk (and that loss could have been prevented), all but two of the "old" Allied BB's received significant damage (some of them heavy) which leaves me with no shore bombardment TF for at least several months. BB's weren't hit quite as bad off Pago Pago as they were at Pearl Harbor on 12/7/41, but it's close.

Newer U.S. BB's are all assigned as escorts in carrier TF's - that mission is priority for these ships and there are no plans at this time to change these BB's from that mission.

Pago Pago was the first amphibious invasion I've launched in WitP, against either the AI or a human opponent. I would have preferred an easier invasion to launch for my first try but Pillager didn't leave me with one. Pillager certainly planned the location of his Japanese outer perimeter well - I had no easy avenue of approach. Pago Pago as an initial invasion site appeared as the best of many more-or-less equally bad choices.

With the availablilty of longer range Allied fighters (P-38J's, P-47's, Thunderbolt II's), now that my 4E bombers have (or will soon have) fighter escorts to their targets in sufficiently large numbers, the skies over Darwin and Rangoon could soon be lit up. While these are rather small actions in the big scheme of things, they could serve useful in chipping away at Pillager's replacement plane and pilot pools over and above damage to targets "on the ground" (and results thereof).

Also looking at things I can do "on the ground" in Australia and making some preparations.

At this point in 1943, the Allies have the numbers and material to successfully attack. Taking on (and defeating) Japanese forces at "close quarters" is absolutely necessary to an Allied victory. The placement of Pillager's outer perimeter has made it difficult to engage Japanese forces (in the Central & South Pacific) effectively at "close quarters" - taking away the use of Allied LBA, the distance and time required for sea movement by an invasion force eliminating any possibility of surprise (not to mention giving Pillager time to concentrate Jap forces against an Allied "point of attack").

I'm seeing Pago Pago in this game as my "Guadalcanal" - the U.S. will pull it out in the end, though it's gonna be long and nasty.

Summary of Operations 10/16/43

Central Pacific: U.S. subs continue reporting very light or no Jap air patrol activity near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, Truk, and off Japanese home islands. No reported contacts between U.S. submarines and Jap surface ships or ASW in any of the above locations.

Jap AK Burma Maru confirmed sunk - attacked by SS Drum near Okinawa on 10/14.

18 Jap ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base, one ship detected at anchor in Truk.
F-5A recon over Canton Is reporting 14 aircraft, 16 Jap LCU's.

South Pacific: All sectors other than Pago Pago continue reporting quiet.

Day 31 of Pago Pago Operations - Weather forecast for Pago Pago area is heavy precipitation.

Three small Jap TF's spotted at Upolu, probably Pillager's version of the "Tokyo Express".
Jap recon flight over Pago Pago.

U.S. sub Crevalle attacked and damaged (system damage 51, float 52) in Pago Pago base hex by D4Y Judy air patrol.

Emphasis in this game turn's activity in the Pago Pago area again consists of Japanese LBA bombing raids against base facilities on Pago Pago and Savaii, also a Jap ground attack strike against U.S. Americal Division on Upolu.

Current status of Pago Pago base - runway damage 89, airfield service damage 100, port damage 100.
Current status of Savaii base - runway damage 99, airfield service damage 91, port damage 9.

Little or nothing can be done to repair base damage on Pago Pago or Savaii under the current situation. The base at Upolu has to be captured before any action to begin effective base repair at Pago Pago or Savaii can begin.

U.S. divisions (1st Cavalry & Americal) on Upolu has adequate supply on hand to effectively defend themselves against a Japanese ground counterattack - but insufficient for these divisions to attack themselves. Current U.S. priority in the Pago Pago area is landing LCU reinforcements on Upolu to complete capture of the base there. HQ I Amphibious Corps & 37th Division are prepping (as much as time allows) for Upolu, possibly additional small LCU's will be added as available transport ship and LST capacity allows.

AAR's of Jap air attacks follow.
