Contact with submarine is lost

my subs are sinking on a daily basis now... SS Tautog is confirmed sunk... don´t know what magic date 12/43 is but we´ve lost three subs in just a couple of days... to make it worse, SS Scorpion is hit by air ASW today, retiring with 49 sys 19 flt 11 eng and with that high sys dam, the sub is in danger of sinking... I can perfectly understand Allied players stating that sub war has completely come to a halt in 44 due to the allmighty and countless E vessels...

moved in some squadrons from Hanoi to fly LRCAP over Pingsiang as it was obvious that the enemy was going to bomb our troops there... we really chew up the enemy formations, the P-47 once again proves to be a real killer with 8 cal.50...

these attacks on bases around New Guinea are nothing but suppression attacks as I don´t want the IJNAF to become active in this area...

bad day for the IJNAF:

amazingly my highly disrupted units here were able to hold after being totally shred during their attack yesterday... no doubt the next Japanese attack will dislodge them though... one of the Corps got no combat ready squads left... same as always, it´s only the defender that seems to get (+) or (-)... why the attacker nearly never gets any (+) or (-) is only something the devs know...

Allied Deliberate attack

26th Group Army

Defending units:
RGC Tax Police Regiment
70th Division
116th Division
41st Division
13th Army

the attack at Pingsiang fails miserably... enemy adjusted av nearly gets multiplied by 7 after having "only" 4000 adjusted av during our last attack... this attack went so bad in terms of disabled squads while not achieving anything that the whole operations is cancelled now... as it stands now, we´ve lost only a handful of combat squads but ongoing attacks will completely wreck our units and with only 200 squad replacements per month we can´t afford it... if we wouldn´t lose a single combat squad for the rest of the war we would not be able to fill out all our units with combat squads with the given replacement rate and our units will always stay highly understrenght... we are now concentrating on defending our backyard... at least the IJAAF was hit hard today...

the game is patched but the AAR at this point still is without the new patch and working radar... got all the fighters on 80% Cap 20% rest and get around 45-50% of the fighters in the air which is enough to deal with this incoming Frank sweep... the Franks were at 6000ft but this time the "magic" alt failed and after a very short time of Franks diving on my aircraft (the usual question of how that is possible when our ac in the air were mostly higher up) the Franks were shot to pieces by our P-47 which proved to be killers again...

the PB4Y are coming from a level 4 airfield which is too small for them, therefore attacking with "reduced" reduced load. Dropping two bombs each, the bombers still managed to score a hit in bad weather... there are three more ships reported in this TF but as 9 out of 10 times we get the usual "bomber unable to locate target due to range or weather"... wonder how ships ever got sunk in real life if land based bombers failed that often... Rainer complains about the same thing, usually his bombers end up with this message...

some Tojos that didn´t attack in the morning were coming in in the afternoon... also this time, the 6000ft turned out to be a bad altitude as the Tojos were just shot to pieces by my diving fighters... really wonder what determines the tactical situation, A2A stays elusive to me... and the results are nothing but loops all the time, totally off the mark with the pendulum swinging in boths directions (sides)... don´t know how it was tested, perhaps only looked at the totally borked combat reports which just don´t tell you anything if you don´t look at the combat replay and count up the losses yourselve... why it was thought to have this kind of FOW in the report is beyond me as the replay still seems to be more or less spot on... makes me even more wonder how ppl can play this game without replays...

it´s been a total disaster for the Japanese over Hanoi and I bet at some point these attacks will just stop... and we´re in the process of moving in some more base forces with radar and these radar sets are going to work in three weeks of this point of the AAR... then we can rely on more or less all Cap in the air with settings of 40%...

at these rates the enemy just is on the receiving end... with only one P-47 lost for probably nearly three dozen enemy fighters downed by the P-47 (is this something you can call loop? [8|]) the enemy will soon stop these attacks as today we haven´t lost any aircraft we can´t replace easily... without the dive, all the A2A would look three stages better, as it is now, it´s just rubbish, worse than WITP when we get into these ridicoulos loops... and you never know before if you are going to have any tactical advantage, no matter how the conditions for both sides look like because even though you see a clear tactical advantage it can mean just nothing and it´s all just about some funny die rolls that can (and do) go totally crazy it seems... P-47 taking down far more than 30 enemy fighters (Franks and Tojos) for one loss within the P-47 is crazy to me...

a pity, our latest sub vs sub attacks failed... Rainer keeps using these SST to supply his frontline bases, doubt they´ve got any effect as a single 500lb bomb hit can destroy more supplies than a SST can carry... really wonder why Rainer even built these SST, I would halt them to save the nav points...

Ternate is pretty far to the top on the list of the coming invasion targets as we want to make our way further North asap... in between of jumping further North we are going to expand the front in this area more to the West and East to take away some danger from our shipping in this "corridor"... other than having KB in the area, there´s just no sign at all that the Japanese are heavily reinforcing or building up the area around Mindanao... if we succesfully jump onto Mindanao or Borneo (means only two steps forward) then the game is lost for the Japanese IMO... and they need a decisive victory before we do that...

Sub slips beneath the waves

and that´s the reason for it... enemy DD and E have become so dangerous, they nearly can compete with US ASW it seems... sub number four being sunk within one and a halve (?) weeks... together with the damaged ones we suffer nearly daily, it´s more like Kriegsmarine in the Pacific at the moment... this was Sand Lance´s first patrol, didn´t score a single time IIRC...

it´s just insane to me how often Rainer moved his carriers over one sub after another while getting away with it all the time... we had so many chances to attack that every other PBEM would have seen at least two carriers sunk with some more being damaged but the last time we scored on a CV(L) was a year ago... KB keeps on moving over our subs and I guess Rainer feels pretty safe... luck has to change sides at some point and I can only hope it´s changing to the other extreme then...

RE: AE = Alpine Edition <-> Rainer79 vs. ranting castor troy

Post by castor troy »

as you could see from the combat report, KB has set sail again and has left the area around Soerabaja and is moving East... don´t know the exact reason for it, perhaps relocating to Babeldaob to react against our moves either further North or against the bases East of Bolea (doubtful as we could bring all our heavies to the battle in this case)... KB is moving in at the best possible moment as we are heading North with our Ternate invasion fleet... the amphib TF will now move to Boela to stay under the cover of lots of Corsairs while our carrier fleet will move North to attempt an attack on KB. We are fielding some 1100 carrier based ac with more than 550 Hellcats with around 200-250 on CVEs. Got another 300 carrier based ac but these are on carriers either on transit or doing an upgrade in Sydney (2 CV). We can also "rely" on heavy bombers from Ambon and Boela but most of them sure get the usual "bomber fail to locate target due to range or weather". I expect the Japanese to have something around 900-1000 carrier based ac in total, unsure about the spotted fleet that clearly is KB but I guess Rainer is using all his CV, CVL and CVE in one spot, just like I´m doing it. I am not taking back my carriers, if the enemy wants to fight then here we are. If we can fight with our precious APA invasion TF out of range then this is something I preferre over having my APA in the line of fire. My TFs weren´t spotted as we keep the Japanese bases out of order in this region so Rainer shouldn´t be aware of my carriers going North with the invasion force tasked to take Ternate. If he just keeps on moving East we are not going to be in range, if he swings South East to perhaps kill some of my LCT or some other low value TF in the area then he might get a nasty surprise. If nothing happens in the next days then be it, we are going to take out Ternate for sure as there´s only a small garisson and we´ve got a full Corps coming in again.

and the game is getting a bit more interesting again... [;)]

That AV in the UBER TF indicates that it's probably a transport tf - and a transport tf can hold 50 ships.. Makes sense, in a way [:'(]

I´m not sure if this TF really exists in this form. There are 38 DDs alone. And these are the "spotted" ships. And then look at the messages below the ships. Never seen something as weird. To me it seems like something got screwed up here as it can´t even be KB with all the escorts passing by as KB is (while in the same "area") somewhere else. To me, this TF together with the weird message below makes no sense and IMO Rainer is a too experienced player to make up such an AI style TF. [&:]

the fact that we moved two Chinese Corps with a couple of crappy AA guns into Vinh was enough to "force" the IJAAF to attack from higher alt, changed their standard alt of 6000ft to 11000ft and the hit rates are going down dramatically... interesting that a couple of flak bursts were enough to scare the bombers to a higher alt... these AA MGs couldn´t really harm the attackers so the result is far better than expected... [:D]

so the reason for these attacks with laser guided bombs is pretty obvious now, it clearly was the 6000ft as this gives you by far better results as 10000ft... could make it worth attacking with my heavies from 6000ft but this then leads to lots of losses due to balloons as these are far more dangerous than enemy flak...

KB moved 9!! hexes to the East this turn. 9 hexes? There are CVE reported, so what is Rainer doing? Moving flank speed? Obviously, but why? [&:]

I thought there could be the possibility of KB swinging further South but the chances to see KB coming closer to my bases were small, with 12 hexes from Ambon this is already pretty close but he can feel save as only heavies from Ambon or Boela could attack while not achieving anything else than wearing down the enemy Cap. As you can see, my carriers ended up in a position to intervene with the possible move South of KB but as it looks now, the enemy carriers are moving East. Also my fleet is set to move further North East to force a carrier battle. Also positioning some subs in the expected path of KB...

As if my PBY op losses wouldn´t be severe enough (losing 100% of my replacements), having enemy carriers nearby means losing nearly a monthly replacement per DAY! Wonder how enemy carriers were ever spotted in real life when you lost all your patrol ac by ops and dozens of them in no time over enemy carriers. [8|] Absolutely the same for both sides of course. Would be great if there could be slightly more realism. As it stands now, my crews are flying around 2/3 of the missions that were flown in real life according to some i-net sources but I suffer horrendous op losses with hundreds of PBY lost to ops so far. If KB stays in range for a week, I would either lose 6 months Catalina replacements or I would have to stand all patrols down and be 100% blind. Odd... while I could find lots of sources stating aircraft x spotted enemy fleet I haven´t found anything about both sides patrols or float planes being comletely whiped out. And I´ve spent quite some time searching for this on the internet just recently. Well, guess either the sources of the devs aren´t available to me or it didn´t happen.

I don't know why my PBY losses are not as high as yours. I have had one or two turns where they took a beating while on patrol over heavy concentrations of fighters, but I am not short of cats and have about 90 in the two pools in mid 43. For the most part my cats and PBYs pretty much shrug off CAP. Now my opponent on the other hand, is getting his patrol aircraft reamed out by my CAP. Sometimes I shoot down ten a turn. Flak gets a few as well.

I really have not done much to tweak my patrols. Only, cautious commanders, train them up a bit in search and perhaps ASW or torpedo, usually 40% search and nothing else. Sometimes higher for periods. If there is a lot of CAP around I fly them at higher altitudes. It is rare that I lose a recon either. I tried the cats on naval attack and they are deadly when attacking-even with little or no torpedo skills. However, even with cautious commanders they will attack into any hornet's nest and I just can't affort to lose them this way. In fact, all of my naval bombers will attack into heavily defended bases with cautious commanders-somewhat negating their role in naval interdiction as I can't have them shot down attacking PBs in a base with a thousand fighters. I wish to hell commanders would show a little more discretion.......

there we go! KB kept racing East, again doing a 9 hex move in one turn! This is really surprising to me because high speed moves is something I try to really avoid as it so far always has caused damage I wasn´t really happy with. Due to thinking about the possibility of having a carrier clash today, we´ve moved 9 PB4Y squadrons (all we have) to Ambon and Boela and have set them to nav attack. As always, we get "bombers fail to locate target due to range or weather" for most of them (this seems to be just standard for both sides) and 16 USN Liberators start off attacking KB. I was pretty shocked when I saw more than 300 Zekes in the air on Cap. Pre warning time was pretty bad, guess the strike wasn´t picked up by radar. Seems like 1000ft could be a good way to attack as this was also proved by 9 Nells attacking at 1000ft with one penetrating a 400 Hellcat Cap. I´m unsure what carriers field the "Ku S-x" units, guess these are coming from the converted CVL and from CVE? Guess all enemy carriers had at least some Zekes on Cap so lets do a quick count. Estimated strength of enemy carrier based ac on the identified carriers is around 900, plus the carriers with the "Ku S-x" units. All in all, it seems the enemy is fielding some 1000 carrier based ac, which is more than I would have expected. The carriers are grouped in at least three different TFs. We sure have min a hundred carrier based ac more than the enemy in our fleet that is moving North with a big advantage in fighter numbers, probably 150-200 fighters more than the enemy. Not only do we have more fighters, ours are also more potent in taking down enemy aircraft and absorbing damage. The main advantage of the enemy was and still is their torpedo bomber which is worth at least two or three of my bombers when able to break through Cap. The high % of enemy Cap indicates that the enemy was not aiming at attacking my carriers but rather to defend the fleet from my LBA, which the Cap did... to some extent... [:D]Out of 16 bombers, 6 made it to target to drop their bombs, while the bombers took out DOZENS of enemy fighters, sending them home damaged. If you want to sweep the sky of enemy fighters, use 4Es. Don´t use your fighters, you are just going to suffer horrendous losses, use your 4Es. Guess four or five dozen heavy bombers are enough to wear down a 300 Zeke Cap. The only thing you really want to see is the bombers coming in BEFORE your carrier strike.

As you can see in the screenshot, our carrier fleet moved to the ordered position but AGAIN, they did NOT react! [:@] This is happening repeatedly in this PBEM. So we end up in 9 hexes distance of the enemy carrier force and our fleet is just sitting there even though the enemy fleet was spotted again and again and again. It really seems that carriers only react if aircraft from their TFs spot enemy carriers, otherwise they do just nothing. But how stupid would that be? And how is this supposed to work? If I have to be in escorted SBD range (7 hexes) then I don´t need my carriers to react because my bombers ARE IN RANGE then anyway (even though dropping 500lb bombs). And my floatplanes only got crappy range anyway. That´s what my PBY are for and that´s why I lose them in the dozens every turn! So what the fuck is happening that my carriers never ever react as long as the enemy carriers stay outside of my carrier based search ac? How odd is this really designed? My carriers moved 3 hexes at night and another 3 hexes during the day, and all of them are set to "react 2", none of them refuelled or did anything else. Yet they only kept sitting at their destination hex. My oh my, there are so many instances when the game does totally stupid things (or the way it´s designed is stupid if it is like mentioned above) that I can´t stop shaking my head. So there goes the enemy carrier fleet, moving on while being 100% safe as long as they don´t end up within SEVEN hexes because at greater range my carriers don´t do anything anyway, no matter what react setting they´ve got. But what happens if the enemy ends up within range? The it doesn´t matter what react setting you have ordered, your carrier TFs start stupidly reacting around to close the range, no matter if you want it or not, no matter what orders you´ve given, most times screwing things up by getting separated, leaving your amphib TF alone or moving far enough to also end up in enemy LBA range even though you wanted to avoid this by all cost. I AM PISSED and there is good reason for it... again... where´s the smiley I´m looking for... there: it´s off once again, everything was just going perfectly, with 9 hexes away from KB, KB being spotted more than a dozen times, my LBA attacking KB and my carriers set to "react 2"... what happens? Nothing but my LBA being shot down and my carriers again staying in place... so silly...

this is in the afternoon, we start off with a dozen PBY spotting KB, detection level must have sky rocketed at this point... what happens with my carriers? Nothing, they just stay in place... so silly... so what´s next? Yeah, exactly... "bombers fail to locate target due to range or weather"... ok, so we lose the next halve dozen PBY for nothing else than to know that KB is there... our carriers stay in place, no matter what and our LBA ends up with the same messages my opponent gets too when trying to attack with LBA... in the morning 16 attacking USN Liberators faced 317 Zekes on Cap, now in the afternoon, the laughable 9 bombers that made it to the target (out of 98 available bombers in range, a whopping 25 made it to target today [&o]) only faced remaining 257 Zekes which again shows what a couple of heavies are able to do with enemy Cap... out of these 9 bombers an unbelievable 8 made it through Cap and dropped their load... all were missing (thank god) due to being shot up by Cap and flak and not really good weather... I´m unsure how much I like the uber abilities of these 4e monsters, glad they didn´t score any hits on a carrier as this would be just too much for my taste... I don´t want to keep my 4Es from nav attack completely because this would leave the Japanese with their Nell/Betty/Frances which are able to perform just as off as my 4E are able to take out enemy fighters so this should compensate for it...

again, why my carriers don´t react is just beyond me... what a turn with lots of losses just for nothing...

I still don´t know if these kind of strikes should mirror squadrons losing their formation completely or if it should mirror waves... in both cases I find the outcome rather strange because squadrons didn´t get lost all the time (how often did this really happen?) and waves should be waves... there´s just no sane reason to create waves smaller than a dozen bombers that then get shot up by enemy Cap when you can have seriously sized waves being able to defend themselves... while I was looking for a good explanation for it, I have yet to find one on the forum... and this is when I think that some things made more sense in WITP, even though there you had 1000 bomber strikes in the Pacific facing 300+ fighters on Cap... remember that this is still with no working radar... and I don´t want to think about how it looks like with working radar...

ORIGINAL: crsutton

I wish to hell commanders would show a little more discretion.......

as you can see on the screen above, I´ve already lost 429 PBY to OPS (only USN, with more of other nations) and I really miss the reason for it. I mostly use skill 70 nav search pilots, having them fly two missions max per week with the given settings but they drop out of the sky like flies die in winter. Recons do slightly better, I can at least replace these losses with perhaps a dozen each month. But nav search is insane, no matter if I use patrol ac or radar equipped patrol bombers. I don´t know if setting them higher will reall help when they end up over KB with 300 fighters in the air. Someone just recently posted it doesn´t matter if you set them at 1000ft 10000ft or 30000ft, they all spot the same which was quite irritating to me. If setting the PBY to their ceiling helps in avoiding being whiped out over enemy carriers then this would enhance realism but on the other hand, if I only have them flying at max alt this is pretty much unrealistic too I guess.

Enemy bombers and patrols are shot down just as mine. We´ve killed probably more than a hundred Nells on nav search over my Capped bases on New Guinea in the passed months. Same goes for Emilies and Mavis.

Sorong is also high on the target list, probably going to take out that place within the next couple of weeks... Sorong isn´t a threat but can be built up to level 8 and is going to be a nice airfield to cover the Eastern flank of our advance... only a small garisson is holding the place, won´t be a problem I guess... two divs plus support are tasked for this target and everything is 100% prepped already...

that´s it for 21st Div... while there are some guerilla units left on Timor, the majority of the enemy units have been whiped out... final tally was five divs, a bgd, halve a dozen tank units, lots of base forces and some HQs... all in all it was quite a loss for the Japanese, we have lost a couple of LST and that´s it... can´t say that the defense of Timor was a success for the Japanese IMO...

I have found a way to guard my LCT from enemy sub attacks... these barge TFs consist of 8 LCT and 2 PT and the PT force the subs to attack submerged but it´s obvious that a sub never attacks a LCT with torps as they always get "cannot acquire firing solution on enemy LCT"... since I´ve been using PTs to escort my LCTs I haven´t lost a single LCT to an enemy sub... [:D] that way I can use these barge convoys to reinforce and resupply my frontline bases without risking much... my convoys go to heavily defended bases near the front and from there the barge convoys pick up troops and supply to deliver them to newly conquered bases... using halve a dozen of these barge TFs for a single base...

Sub slips beneath the waves

there is a good reason why I say I hate it what my subs are doing... this is sub number four or five to be sunk within a very short timeframe... [:(] enemy ASW has skyrocketed at the end of 43, every fridging ship able to carry a depth charge has suddenly become a killer... we are really mirroring the Kriegsmarine in Dec as we´ve lost a sub for every two enemy ships we´ve sunk in Dec 43, not to talk about the dozen heavily damaged subs in Dec... if this isn´t some kind of loop that is happening by accident then I have to concede my sub war in early 44... Tuna duelled two E with her deck gun...

Devilfish succesfully attacks one of the new Japanese carriers and puts two Mk14 into the carrier... the second torp cause an ammo storage explosion and while not burning, the carrier is showing up as heavily damaged now... must be a late xmas present for me and is exactly what I was talking about a couple of times as it just had to happen at some point if you constantly move over dozens of subs while never suffering for it... the carrier is far from a bigger port and there are more subs around to pick off the damage ship... this turn was a little frustrating until this point, you may imagine how I was smiling when two torps finally hit home... [:)]

even though my subs don´t show up on this screen of the replay, there are around a dozen of them between KB´s current location and Java...

WOW!!! I hardly could believe my eyes, after putting two torps into Amagi in the morning, the whole day passed and Devilfish attacked Amagi again and has put another two torps into the stricken carrier. After suffering heavy damage from the two torps and an ammo storage explosion in the morning the carrier was separated from it´s TF and had only one escort, making it easy prey for another sub attack. Understandable that Rainer wasn´t happy about the carrier being split off with only one escort. Both torps caused massive damage and the carrier went down with all it´s aircraft aboard! Well done, very well done! Perhaps this is a lesson for the enemy and we can scare him away with a massive sub blockade, or at least make him more cautious because up to now, he really didn´t care about my subs at all when KB was operating in sub invested waters.

Post by castor troy »

I´m absolutely sure that CV Amagi was sunk by SS Devilfish today, this is also confirmed by the aircraft losses today. 68 carrier based ac destroyed on the ground. What I found a bit strange is what actually has been on the carrier. 32 Judies, 18 Jills and only 18 Zekes. Looks like Rainer likes to play with unit resize. But having 32 Judies with only 18 Zekes on such a carrier is something I wouldn´t do. Better having it the other way around for my taste, perhaps Rainer thinks his fighters would be useless anyway, I don´t know. While the Zekes got problem on escort or vs heavy bomber strikes, they shoot up Hellcats on escort and Allied carrier based bomber pretty well so having lots of Zekes for me would be preferrable over more bombers. As KB was in patrol ac range again we´ve of course lost more than halve a dozen patrols again. [8|]

Wow - that's definitely got to hurt & make him think twice (or even three times) about rushing about with the KB when you're subs are around. He probably expected your subs to attack the escorts only & he got lazy.

What's his carrier strength look like?

Manado is a potential level 9 airfield and we´re going to attack this base within the next two months, this is going to be one of the most important targets for spring 44. With Manado built up we can dominate all of Borneo and far into the Philipines with our heavies... with radar and some surface assets the base is going to be a super tough target if the enemy actually thinks about attacking it... we shouldn´t have much problem to take the base as there are only 10000 reported troops, ground combat is going to be a cake walk..
