Eastern Front
Situation Report Aug 31st 1944 Turn 94
Army Group South

4th Ukrainian Front launches an armoured assault against Axis forces defending the Saratov / Astrakhan railway line, there main objective believed to be the town of Baskunchak, 18th Armee is mobilised and in conjunction with FM Von Kleist's Army Group A begin counter operations to destroy the Soviet forces, XXIV Pz Korps supported by I ArmeeKorps and XXVI ArmeeKorps advance towards the town of Orda then swing directly east, with no infantry support guarding the enemies flank 8th Panzer Div is able to push behind the enemy armour cutting off two Soviet tank units with infantry support, 18th Armee's northern pincer movement links up with Army Group A's southern pincer.

At Stalingrad the enemy remains defiant.

Army Group A

At Rostov Von Kleist receives the full picture of the Soviet dispositions and the perceived objectives, the Field Marshall orders immediate action after conferring with his Army Group south counterpart FM Lindemann on a course of strategy, Richard Ruoff's 17th Armee with support from 1st Pz Armee's III Pz Korps crosses one of the many tributaries of The Volga river and moves with speed behind the unsupported Soviet armour, further north Fredrich Paulus 6th Armee begins to advance directly towards the oncoming enemy tanks, with enemy forces spread wide and thin Paulus is able push units between the gaps to link up with 18th Armee and Felix Steiner's III SS Pz Korps.
Encircling parts of four ( 1st Polish, 1st Guards Tank, 5th Guards Tank and Pliev Cav / Mech Tank ) Armies and halting the enemy action.

A unit from the Signal Intelligence Regiment (KONA) which operates close to the front lines providing crucial intelligence on Soviet troop movements, this detachment part of Battalion NAA 9 from KONA 6 ( created in Frankfurt 1941 ) was monitoring the current enemy buildup.

Western Front

Army Group B

This week The Allies have returned to targeting V - Weapons Facilities and U - Boat Factories in northwestern Germany, there was also a lot of enemy operations against our Industry in the Ruhr Region, the Luftwaffe concentrating the bulk of its air units to engage bomber formations overflying occupied Netherlands with more interceptions in Germany proper resulting in high enemy bomber losses.

Western Front

Army Group B

In France the enemy continued to attack ports, rail centres, Air Bases and supply lines along with there carpet bombing of front line and the surrounding areas in an attempt to weaken our defensive positions around the beachhead perimeter, again Axis air units were limited in numbers but air defences still managed to inflict heavy loss on Allied aircraft.

Generalmajor Werner Junck's II Jagd Korps the only fighter Group stationed in Northeastern France offering determined air opposition against Allied bomber flights.

The airbase in the town of Abbeville comes under a week long concerted attack by enemy aircraft, the runway took damage in early attacks but late in the week a raid by British bombers resulted in heavy losses to the enemy.

Air battles over The Ligurian Sea intensify as the enemy attempts to maintain control of the air and protect sea lanes for there supply convoys sailing from Corsica to Cannes and conduct bomber raids on Axis targets Provence region, with minimal air units stationed in the south of France Axis air units in Italy are hard pressed trying to cover both fronts.

This week the enemy was able to take advantage of free skies as the few fighter units in the area were unable to launch intercept missions against Allied aircraft, ground air defences did inflict losses on attacking air raids against our front line units.

Italian Front
Situation Report Sept 2nd 1944 Turn 62
Army Group C / Austria

With enemy focusing most of there activity in southern France attacks against front line troops and command and control centres has been reduced, observer reports from Flak units indicate that raids are now being undertaken by British air units only which are concentrating on certain sectors of the Axis defensive line with Generaloberst Von Arnim's 5th Pz Armee being the target of enemy raids.
The was air activity out over the Adriatic Sea as US Bombers were detected flying north towards Yugoslavia, fighter units attempted to intercept the enemy formations.

Austria

Once the enemy formations moved out range of our Fighter units stationed Italy they tracked by ground observers throughout The Balkans and were believed to heading for either Hungry or Austria, it was later reported the enemy formations were enemy Bombers from the US 15th Air force which struck at Fuel and Oil Facilities in Austria causing substantial damage, air defences unable to mount any effective counter due to the dwindling number of fighter forces stretched over Occupied Europe.

This week once again the enemy opened with operations along just about the entire front, Axis forces were subjected to an onslaught of Infantry / Armoured attacks.

Volturno Sector

Allied grounds assaults opened with three British Corps against General Balck's three Divisions defending the coast road, fighting was fierce as enemy infantry supported by armour attempted to force our troops back from the Volturno and cross the river, 20 miles northeast 14th Armee guarding the Mountain approaches to Capua withstood five assaults on there lines, Axis defences held forcing the enemy back with heavy losses.

Biferno Sector

Hans Hube's XIV Pz Korps defending the centre along a 20 mile front was under sustained attack as enemy armour pushed forward, the Korps withstanding five assaults on its positions.
On The Adriatic General Vietinghoff's two ArmeeKorps covering the 30 mile river line from the coast to Hube's men were hard pressed by enemy attacks with the redeployment of the 12th SS Panzer Division away from the front leaving the Armee light on armour, despite this the arrival of the 15,000 man strong 1st Fallschirmjaeger Division is able to mount a solid defence and counter the Allied advance.

Normandy

There has been a delay in the redeploying of General Hubicki's LXXXIX ArmeeKorps from The Pas De Calais region as two new enemy convoys have been detected in The English Channel, the unit is to remain at its station until the enemies objective can be ascertained and plans put in place, fresh units will also be diverted to defensive positions to reinforce Garrison units in lightly held areas, a general assault on the enemy beachhead is postponed for now.

While our plan to assault the enemy positions have been put on hold the enemy attempts to breakout out of the perimeter have not, an attack by British and Canadian forces against the defenders at St-Valery is halted just outside the town, a second attack also fails.
Forward combat units report fresh enemy landings on Juno Beach as the fighting dies down towards the weeks end.



On the western end of the beachhead Herr is again facing the bulk of the enemies assaults, Hodges US 1st Army launches a series of combined attacks making small gains forward but fails to achieve any breakthrough the line stabilises as the Generals two Panzer divisions clash with enemy armour forcing a halt to any further attacks.

Army Group G

No major attacks by enemy forces again this week apart from minor skirmishes close to front lines, General Vaerst expressing concern that this landing may be a diversion to draw troops away from other key areas along the French coast and allow the real landings to take place on undefended beaches.

Will the WiTE2 game end at the end of '44?

In theory it should end on the first turn in Jan 1945, the only other time I had a chance for an automatic end was in 1943 but as I did not have enough Victory points so then It meant playing through to the last chance for the Axis victory in Jan 1945.
Just checked the manual if no conditions have been reached by Dec 31st 1944 it becomes a automatic Axis major Victory.

I was hoping to pull a miracle off retake Stalingrad in 1943 and end the game on a interesting note but it didn't happen, I was then keen to play game through to an ending to see what possible outcomes may occur as it turns out I have steam rolled the AI, over the course of the match I have increased the AI's levels to make it fight harder but I guess the damage was already done by mid 1943.

So with this in mind I have tried to make both theatres as interesting as I can but its a PVE game there is only so much you can do.

Right now its really mundane I understand that, however I intend to play through to the end , I started the campaign so I want to see it through to completion.
As for the AAR if there is no interest that is fine I understand

Army Group North

With Kirov secure and no enemy action across the northern front Axis forces continue to fortify the front line.

Army Group Centre

Despite enemy movements close to Axis positions the central front remains quiet.


Army Group South

I ArmeeKorps and XXIV Pz Korps begin attacks in conjunction with units from Army Group A, despite the enemy tank formations being cut off in containable pockets there is some stiff resistance from Red Army Troops but there fight is in vain, pinned down and unable to manoeuvre German armour from 18th Armee smashes the defenders positions.

The Soviet 17th Tank Corps is destroyed along the Saratov / Astrakhan rail line.

While battles rage across Army Groups South and Army Group A's main front Luftflotte 4 ( Von Richthofen ) intensifies the attacks on Stalingrad as a prelude for 4th Pz Armee's planned attack.

While lindemann's forces eliminate the northern pockets Kleist begins the destruction of the Soviet southern forces, supported by Martin Gareis's III Pz Korps 17th Armee and 6th Armee begin the assault, enemy resistance collapses within days, the entire operation netting around 40,000 Red Army troops.
As the last of the encircled enemy units surrenders there are reports of more enemy tank formations moving south towards the Volga, Hermann Brieth's 1st Pz Armee which had very little involvement in the recent action now prepares to cover Rouff's right flank as 17th Armee regroups.

Italian Front / Western Front

Army Group C

On Italian Front the enemy air activity is directed on front line units and supply lines as well as Command units in a continual effort to disrupt communications, on the ground the fighting was heavy in 14th Armee's sector as US 5th Army launches assaults against Kuebler's LXXXXVII ArmeeKorps, an attack in the centre against Hube's troops was repulsed, on the Adriatic there was some fighting with Straube easily containing the attacks otherwise fighting on 10th Armee's front was subdued.



Army Group G

The front remains quiet apart from a lot of air activity over Ligurian Sea and against communication centres and rail infrastructure in the southern region, there were bombings of Axis ground forces and fortifications but otherwise the enemy seems to be digging in along front.



Army Group B

Allied Air forces were out in strength striking at Berlin and northern German industrial targets, in France the Allies continued there usual weekly bombing routines, on the ground the redeployment of front line units was again delayed as not only did the enemy managed to withdraw battle weary units but land fresh troops under fire despite our coastal artillery best efforts to sink transports.
With these freshly landed enemy units US 1st Army launched a series of attacks, there was heavy fighting but our lines held and the Allies suffering considerable losses.
More good news for hard pressed units manning the front with the arrival of several new Panzer formations with the new Panther G tanks available and large numbers of artillery units to support forward units on the Normandy front.

This could be the decisive moment for FM Rommel if the weather holds.

As more of a field commander, my experience with Ersatzheer politics to steer manpower your way is limited... In WitE2, you can change the TOE of airbases. Did you try this?
What units are under Luftflotte Reich? Are you able to set their TOE to a lower level? I suppose that there are a lot of Flak units under this command?

I have heard that Allied troopers are not paying their bills at French and Italian beach bars. The War ministry in contrast is properly processing every invoice.
The beach club owners want their old customers back!

Regarding the Eastern Front, o my a conquest of the whole area can end the conflict. What is limiting the further advance? Rail capacity or trucks?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject Feldmarschall I did look at that scenario of reducing TOE's of Luftflotte Commands and air bases but was worried about Flak units and what the repercussions might come from it but I need manpower for combat units so I will try reducing and see what effect it has. If it does not disrupt air defences operations to much I'll stick with it but if AA guns start to reduce in there effectiveness I will have think of something else.

As for the Eastern Front the northern rail lines have managed to catch up more or less to the front line as has the southern front however supplies still only trickle in, the centre the rail lines are still a long way back despite rail repair units working over time and truck repairs have skyrocketed.

Eastern Front
Situation Report Sept 14th 1944 Turn 96


Army Group North

In the Kirov region the enemy continues to remain on the defensive, Intelligence reports indicated a large part of the Red Air Force ( 1st, 3rd, 4th, 13th and 17th Air Armies ) has been deployed in the Udmurtia region but have thus far made no attempt to interdict Axis operations, construction of rail and road infrastructure is proceeding unhindered its expected rail conversion to Kirov will be complete in two to three weeks.

Army Group Centre

In central sector the rail and supply situation is far different, reconstruction of the major networks is slow with modern roads virtually non existent, there is an enormous effort to bring forward supplies and materials by truck convoys resulting in large numbers of vehicle break downs, operations on the central front at this time have been not planned despite objections from field Commanders.


Army Group South

After the failure of there last operation Soviet forces have pulled back and taken a defensive posture and began deploying there remaining units around the town of Orda and further north at Palasovka, while the bulk of Axis forces have now withdrawn back behind the Volga defence line orders from AG Command for small unit recon and sabotage operations are to be conducted behind enemy lines.
Operational areas will span from enemy controlled territory south of Elton and north to Palasovka as well as northeast to Orda, rail and road bridges, airfields and other military facilities to be targeted as well gathering Intel on troop dispositions, field officers are authorised to pick there best units for these missions.
Units from 4th Pz Armee have been tasked to operate from Lake Elton to the khara River, 18th Armee units to operate south of Elton and also northeast of the town.

With the 4th Ukrainian Front's assault halted and there armoured forces smashed the Caspian front returns to a state of uneasy calm, enemy reinforcements have advanced to within 20 miles of front line units but seem unwilling to engage, accessing the current intelligence reports on enemy strength the AG Commander issues defensive orders.

There is heavy fighting along The Volturno the Allies continue there efforts to force a breakthrough, Balck's units holding a defensive line on the coast come under attack from two Allied Corps launching combined Armoured / Infantry assaults, further inland General Von Senger Und Etterlin's 14th Armee takes the brunt of the enemy attacks over the course of the week with the Allies assaulting on a narrow front, Kueblers units south of Capua are facing over 100,000 men and three armoured ( 1st US, 1st BRIT and 6th SA ) Divisions.

In the centre four Allied Corps attack Hube's XIV Pz Korps, the enemy opens with a huge artillery barrage of over 1000 guns followed up by nearly 75,000 men, on the main Biferno line 10th Armee positions come under attack as a series of US / BRIT assaults are launched against Straube's forces defending 20 miles south of Termoli, reports indicate that elements of the 1st US Army have moved out of Normandy and redeployed to the Italian front an incredible feet of logistics by the Western Allies.

Normandy

In the early hours of the Sept 16th Herr's LXXXVI Pz comes under heavy attack from a large armoured force and supporting Infantry, after enduring an overnight artillery barrage from enemy Naval forces in the channel the Allies launch a three pronged attack against the heavily fortified Axis positions, lead by the Brit Guards Armoured Division 60,000 Allied troops drive forward hoping to push back Herr's Pz Troops entrenched along the Le Havre / Rouen rail line and breakout towards the Seine River to hopefully expand the beachhead and allow more enemy troops to land.

While Herr's troops fight to hold the southern end of the Normandy line Rommel through guile has been surreptitiously moving elements of three German Armee's north to strike at the Allies weaker flank, as the Allied Armour and Infantry begin concerted assaults against LXXXVI Pz Korps, the Generalfeldmarschall launches his Counter Offensive code named Operation Blume.
