Summary of Operations 10/29/43 part deux

Australia: No reported ground or air combat.

Hudson I recon over Darwin reporting fighters on CAP, 1 Jap TF, two ships disbanded in port, airfield damage 19, 533 aircraft (244 fighters, 22 bombers), 13 Jap LCU's.

Detected status of Jap base in Daly Waters - airfield damage 100, 12 Jap LCU's. Number of Jap LCU's detected in Daly Waters this game turn is a very significant drop from the 28 LCU's reported on 10/28 and the peak number of 36 Jap LCU's shown in this base as of late 8/43. Pillager is possibly moving all these LCU's somewhere... but where? This situation will continued to be monitored.

Allied recon flights over Port Moresby and Exmouth both report no detected activity or change in Jap forces. A6M5 fighters on CAP continue to be reported over Port Moresby.

Japanese air activity from bases in northern Burma (Mandalay, Lashio, Magwe) has almost completely disappeared in the last few game turns, this including Japanese air attacks against targets in Southern China. This decrease in Jap air ops does coincide with the increased number of Jap planes in Rangoon.

Summary of Operations 11/1/43

Post by wneumann »

Summary of Operations 11/1/43 part deux

Australia: No reported ground or air combat.

AK Gausdal along coast of NE Australia (hex 48,102 near Cooktown) reports contact with G4M Betty air patrol - this plane is likely operating from the Jap base at Portland Roads. Gausdal is one of a number of Allied coastal transports moving supply and an occasional small LCU between Sydney and bases in NE Australia (Townsville, Cairns, Cooktown).

Hudson I recon over Darwin reports fighters on CAP, 2 Jap TF's (+1 from last report), 2 ships disbanded in port, 697 aircraft (329 fighters, 17 bombers), 13 Jap LCU's (no change).

No report this game turn for Jap LCU's detected in Daly Waters.

A group of 7 Jap LCU's were detected in hex 36,86 (just outside Darwin along the Darwin-Katherine rail line). A Sigint report entry for 11/1 identifies two of the Jap LCU's in hex 36,86 as 35 Heavy AA Bn & 1 Reserve AA Rgt. Previous location of both the identified flak units is Daly Waters. With the recon report for Darwin (see above) indicating no change in the number of Jap LCU's spotted in Darwin, it can be concluded that most or all of the 7 detected Jap LCU's came from Daly Waters.

From a variety of earlier intelligence reports, I had been able to determine many of the 30+ Japanese LCU's previously in Daly Waters were probably flak, base force, and/or engineer (construction) LCU's that were there to protect and maintain airfield facilities. If these units are among the seven Jap LCU's in hex 36,86 it is possible that Pillager is at the very least abandoning the use of Daly Waters as a forward Japanese air base. However, most or all of the 9 remaining Jap LCU's detected in Daly Waters are likely to be combat units which suggests Pillager's intent to defend Daly Waters against a northward advance by Allied ground forces in NW Australia.

Allied recon flights over Exmouth and Port Moresby both continue reporting no detected activity or change in Jap forces.

DEI: No reported contacts between Allied subs and Japanese surface ships or air patrols.

Philippines: SS Peto operating N of Luzon off Batan Is. No reported contacts with Jap surface ships or ASW, however, Peto is reporting numerous Jap air patrols (including Ki-21 Sally, Ki-49 Helen, Ki-51 Sonia).

India/Burma: No reported ground or air combat.

British sub Trespasser in northern part of Malacca Straits (off Georgetown) reporting contacts with numerous Jap air patrols including Ki-21 Sally, Ki-48 Lily, J1N1R Irving, G4M Betty, D4Y Judy.

Dutch sub O-23 off Burma coast reporting contact with G3M Nell air patrol (probably operating from Rangoon).

F-5A recon over Rangoon reporting 3 Jap TF's, 2 ships disbanded in port (+2 from last report), 487 aircraft (197 fighters, 41 bombers), 17 Jap LCU's (+5 from last report), heavy industry 77(116), resource production 96(5). Based on current available information, it's not possible at this time to accurately determine the composition or (Pillager's) intent of the 9 Jap LCU's arriving in Rangoon over the last several game turns. Another situation to watch...

damnd. you simply can not bring some fighters in the air at pago pago. your opponent does a good job keeping the AF closed.

whats your strategy at pago pago? any plans to get the AF there operational? i can imagine that he would stop this daily attacks, when 50 corsairs show up over the AF and say hallo to his "paper flyers".[:)]

Bigbaba,

What you stated is very much true... with an operational U.S. airfield on any of the three islands, it would be a massacre.

Unfortunately the Samoan Islands (Pago Pago, Upolu, Savaii) is becoming the "Guadalcanal" of our PBEM. The best change my opponent (Pillager) has for a Japanese victory is stopping a U.S. offensive at the outer perimeter, given the overall strategic situation and the way developments in our game have gone to date. I'm estimating that Pillager has already thrown most of the available Japanese LBA in the Pacific theatres into air operations over Pago Pago. I now have two squadrons on Pago Pago (one PBY Catalina, one F4U Corsair) - as planes in these squadrons became damaged, they never repaired back to operational status and the two squadrons are just sitting on the ground at Pago Pago as stationary targets.

The battle for Pago Pago is going to be a long one - U.S. strategy in the Pago Pago area involves a number of steps which aren't going to be accomplished quickly.

The first and probably the most important step is completing the capture of Upolu base. My original plan was to capture all three islands in the initial attack - I had (incorrectly) estimated Upolu to be the most lightly defended of the three islands and thought two divisions (1st Cavalry & Americal) without a Corps HQ would be sufficient.

Having failed to capture Upolu base in the initial assault was very costly - Pillager is using Upolu airfield as a base for a large part (60-70%) of the Japanese LBA now flying over Pago Pago.

Completing the capture of the base on Upolu involves two tasks.

(1) Keeping the two U.S. divisions (1st Cavalry & Americal) as functioning LCU's so they will remain battleworthy when a second U.S. assault is launched on Upolu. Providing adequate supply to these divisions is key to doing this. For the last two weeks, an airlift of supply points from Penhryn Is to Upolu has been running using all available PB4Y Liberators (6 squadrons, 72 planes total) as transports. PB4Y's are the only available U.S. planes capable of flying the 16 hex distance (at their extended range) between Penhryn and Upolu. At this time both 1st Cavalry and Americal Divisions remain 75-80% operational.

(2) Forming and sending a second amphibious attack force to Upolu. This step is currently in progress. The force for the second assault is centered around two fresh divisions (32nd & 37th) with HQ I Amphib Corps plus supporting LCU's as available transport capacity permits. My plan is landing the second amphibious force quickly (and by surprise) on Upolu, combine this force with 1st Cavalry & Americal Divisions, and capture Upolu base with a single, rapid attack. The main U.S. carrier force will provide close escort and air cover of the second amphibious force.

While Pillager will easily spot ships carrying this force as they approach Pago Pago, surprise may still be possible with well-placed sea movement of this force on its final approach - with three possible islands in the Samoan group as a destination, it may be possible to create some uncertainty as to exactly which island the ships are going and if this uncertainty can be maintained until the last possible moment, a surprise landing on Upolu might be possible. The objective of a surprise landing on Upolu followed by a rapid capture of the base is destroying Japanese LBA air units now operating from Upolu airfield on the ground before Pillager has any opportunity to transfer them (by air) off Upolu to other friendly bases.

Once Upolu base is captured, getting airfields operational on all three islands (Pago Pago first, then Upolu and Savaii) is the next major step. Seabee LCU's and supply points for this are available in substantial quantities and already located in the South Pacific theatre area.

Once the airfields are operational... there are 300+ U.S. fighter planes (all P-38, P-47, F4U Corsairs, F6F Hellcats) already based on Penhryn ready to transfer into Pago Pago. After that, the bombers... The 4E bomber may become to me in WitP what massed artillery was to the Russians.

I cannot disregard the KB in my calculations - Pillager still has this available as an intact force. My theory (for now) is that he's keeping the KB as a strategic reserve, a force of last resort (or for the decisive blow) to be committed only after all other available Japanese forces have been thrown into battle. In our PBEM Pillager may likely be employing the KB as a naval version of "Napoleon's Imperial Guard", a force in reserve to turn a major battle or possibly the entire campaign in the Japanese favor at a critical point.

Summary of Operations 11/2/43

Post by wneumann »

Summary of Operations 11/2/43 - continued

Australia: No reported ground or air combat.

Hudson I recon over Darwin reports fighters on CAP, no Jap TF's (-2 from last report), 2 Japanese ships detected in port, 778 aircraft (353 fighters, 28 bombers), 27 Jap LCU's (+14 from last report).

The number of LCU's now shown in Darwin base indicates that some or all of the Jap LCU's leaving Daly Waters several days ago are likely now at Darwin - the situation here will continue being observed to confirm this. If true, this movement of Jap LCU's could indicate Pillager has gone on the defensive in NW Australia.

Sigint report entry for 11/2 indicates Jap 52 Heavy AA Bn is now in Darwin and transferred here from the Kwantung Army. Previous location of this LCU was in Harbin (Manchuria) as of 5/3/43.

No report this game turn of detected status of the Japanese base in Daly Waters.
Allied recon flights over Exmouth and Port Moresby both reporting no detected activity or change in Jap forces.

DEI: SS Gudgeon reports (night) contact with unidentified Jap TF in Brunei base hex. SS Grunion off Pontianek reports Ki-21 Sally air patrol and engages Jap TF. AAR follows.

India/Burma: No reported air or ground combat.

Chinese 7 CAF fighter squadron (sister squadron to the "Den of Thieves") is upgrading P-40N's to P-47D Thunderbolts at Patna (NE India). Many of the Chinese AF fighter squadrons now have pilot experience levels in the low to mid 70's - Chinese squadrons having better pilot experience in some cases than the AVG or USAAF fighter squadrons recently arriving in Aden as reinforcements in this theatre. Plans are to upgrade several additional Chinese squadrons to P-47D's and employ them to reinforce fighter escorts for Liberator bombing raids.

With the general supply situation in China not adequate to support air operations in that theatre, the most useful short-term employment for at least some Chinese AF squadrons is operating from bases in NE India against Japanese forces in Burma.

F-5A recon over Rangoon reporting no Jap TF's (-3 from last report), one Japanese ship at anchor (-1 from last report), 528 aircraft (224 fighters, 54 bombers), airfield damage 18, resource production 97(4), heavy industry 78(115).
