Wow - that's definitely got to hurt & make him think twice (or even three times) about rushing about with the KB when you're subs are around. He probably expected your subs to attack the escorts only & he got lazy.

What's his carrier strength look like?

it just worked by far too often to run over my subs, Rainer isn´t even aware about how many there really are because he most often doesn´t spot them and only notices when a) my subs attack, b) are driven off by his ASW or c) when I tell him that it´s driving me nuts that he can do that so often with my subs being totally useless [:D] And I´ve always told him too that at some point the subs just have to bite, which Devilfish did. [:)]

His carrier strenght? Well, guess he had all his carriers in one basket when my PB4Y attacked, more than one and a halve dozen carriers, something like a thousand carrier based ac in total.

guess I mentioned that 12/43 seems to be the beginning of the end for our sub warfare... don´t know why Japanese ASW was totally ineffective until 12/43 and then suddenly sky rocketed... [8|]

O23 ends up with 51 sys 51 flt and is in sinking condition with such a high sys damage... both SS Haddo 26/4 and SS Gunnel 23/5 were hit by air ASW and are both retiring...

not much difference between the Kriegsmarine of real life in the Atlantic in late 43 and the Allied subs in this PBEM...

ordered the Venturas to attack the remnants of these divisions on Timor, was more like a training strike but I will halt these strikes because the game sends 80 fighters with the 84 bombers to a target that is never going to have any Cap and this is just far too much risk of taking op losses every day... mmmm....

the usual losses, out of 9 ac lost in total, 6 were on nav search... so silly...

the Japanese have moved an Army to take Nanning a couple of months ago, now that our assault on Pingsiang failed I´ve ordered units in Vietnam and South West China to move on Nanning again to liberate the road connection between China and Vietnam again... the enemy saw us coming from both sides and bugged out with his 17 units (several divided divs as usual but this trick long hasn´t worked anymore)... we take the empty base... we are now focussing on this area to defend it with force as the Vietnam bases (especially Hanoi´s level 9 airfield) will play a big part in the next 6 months when we want to rule the China Sea... coming from the South the enemy shipping could evade us using shipping lanes near the South China and Vietnamese coast, but this doesn´t work if we´ve got a level 9 airfield at Hanoi... [:D] if we move some 20 hexes further North from where the front is now we can interdict any shipping in the South China Sea already...

with KB being chased away by my subs and the invasion TF having been in standby in this area I´ve decided to send the troops in... there´s not much that could harm the invasion, two LST are lightly damaged during beaching... being 100% prepped, the landing is yet another cakewalk...

here we´ve deliberately sent in the bombers without any sweeps or escorts as this will keep our losses to a minimum... game wise, as an Allied player you must be stupid to use your fighters for anything else than Cap if you can afford the morale hit of heavies going in against Cap because that´s the way to keep your total losses low... send some escorts and watch them being shred, send sweeps and watch them going in in bits and pieces and being shred as soon as you´ve patched the game (more about this as soon as you will notice the AAR has caught up with the patched game, it´s exactly what I was talking about and what I have feared... for both sides... and it´s causing me headache)...

it´s not the fighters hurting our bombers, it´s the other way around...

these "waves" are just too small...

in the end, three B-24 are lost, something I can easily afford... ordering 100 P-38 on escort while losing 20 to the enemy Cap is something I can NOT afford... 3 B-24 is not even 5% of the monthly replacement, 20 P-38 would be 50% of the monthly replacement...

here comes KB again... looks like my Ternate invasion has triggered a move again, this time South and not East through my "sub blockade"... there´s also a blockade in this area though, without any success though... after taking down one and a halve dozen patrol aircraft KB is attacked by USAAF heavies from Dili... 80% of them get the usual "bomber fail to locate target due to range or weather" or "bomber fail to link up returning to base" (this is just standard for the game) so the first wave is going in with a good two dozen bombers... we already know that each B-24 is worth halve a dozen Corsairs and the bombers´ gunners have a field day once more knocking out Zeke after Zeke... this is the so called "B-24 sweep"... all bombers are shot up of course but they reduced the enemy Cap by something like 80 Zekes... this not enough, 18 out of 28 bombers then dropped their load near the enemy capital ships while hitting nothing as they´re all missing nav bomb skill as I don´t expect the USAAF heavies to destroy enemy shipping... don´t know if Rainer is aware of it, but with being 11 hexes from Dili he´s quite lucky, because if he gets into 10 hexes range he would also be facing lots of B-25 and Venturas set to 1000ft nav attack and with the B-24 as escorts, this then could result in a couple of bomb hits on his fragile flattops...

our fleet is parked next to Ternate of course to cover the invasion, I seriously doubt Rainer is bold enough to send KB East now passing Kendari as this would bring him into range of all my LBA in this area that of course has been set to nav attack immediately... and it also would force the carrier engagement we were aiming lately which was avoided by the Japanese... my fleet will stay with the invasion TF as the APA are just to precious to be left alone and I expect KB to head back to Java anyway after the encounter with my heavies... three of these B-24 waves could knock out all of KB´s Cap...

just like the first wave, also the second is hitting the enemy fighters hard... only 9 bombers incoming, doesn´t matter, 7 make it to target despite a 250 Zeke Cap... Cap again was reduced dozens of Zekes... all hail to the B-24 sweeps...

third piece meal wave coming in, at this point the original Cap of 338 was reduced by 37 B-24 to 181! Try to send twice the number of first line fighters and be assured that you won´t reduce the enemy Cap as much while probably losing 50 fighters... 6 bombers of this wave incoming, 6 bombers dropping their load...

in the end, our bomber squadrons were hit hard of course, with all the write offs we´ve suffered 25 out 43 bombers lost with a dozen crews missing... but these 43 bombers took out more than 50% of the 330+ Zeke Cap... if you get a turn without the majority of your bombers missing the target as usual this gets nasty within a moment and could end in a complete whipeout if there are also our carriers coming into play... this probably is a lesson for the enemy, lots of subs and lots of B-24 should mean stay away from that area... with the front reaching the SRA the enemy needs a decisive victory but he also needs a fleet in being because this forces me to use all my carriers in one basket for every step forward... if he loses halve of KB with us getting away in good condition then we can operate in the SRA at will because our B-24 with blast the way and the Japanese suffer from the same issues as we do, most of their bombers don´t show up at all over the fleet or are coming in piece meal... and to make it worse, their bombers are shot down like flies by our Hellcats while our B-24 are more a threat to the enemy fighters than vice versa...

Ternate only reached level 3 forts, another indication that Rainer either started far too late building up his bases in this area or he really didn´t think this would be my main axis of advance... small garisson, low forts, the base will be ours soon... airfield can be built up to level 6, not big enough for massed 4Es but a nice forward base to cover our jump onto Manado only four hexes away... heavy bombers will stay at Ambon (USN Liberators on nav attack) and Boela (USSAF B-24 on tactical attacks against enemy strongholds)...

You need to check on plane losses in tracker since it appears to remove the FOW. At any rate, your B-24 sweeps may damage several Zero's, but not so many are being killed. According to your screen shot, the B-24 are getting a 1:2 kill rate. (I would like to know what tracker says, since the game screen tends to inflate enemy losses.) As a JFB I would gladly take that exchange.

I don´t care much about how many Zeroes are shot down, even if it would be none at all, the effect of the heavy bombers on KB is immense as a couple of dozen bombers are enough to wear down hundreds of fighters on Cap. Neither the actual losses of KB´s Zeroes nor the B-24 matter much but the fact that KB can´t stand the attack of 50 B-24 should alert every Japanese player IMO. And I guess if there would be follow on strikes by a hundred Venturas/B-25 on 1000ft nav attack flown by 70 skilled pilots you would not be really glad about that exchange.

game has been patched up and the AAR has reached the patched status now... with attack bomber bug fixed we´ve sent them out on a try... set them to 10000ft, none of the groups got any grd bomb skill (though 70 lownav and 70 lowgrd) and they work just fine from 10000ft... don´t know what to say, I was just shaking my head... if you can use attack bombers without any grd bomb skill from 10000ft and get such results then I don´t know what I should do with them... it now looks like doing 1 year of lownav/lowgrd training wasn´t necessary because I could use them in level bombing mode now just like every other level bomber (which would be odd in terms of realism)... really don´t know, attack bombers leave me just as puzzled as I ever have been since release...

lol, you just have to laugh your a$$ off when looking at the silly coordination of AE... it´s plain silly... this is a failed escort attempt of KB that is lurking in this area and the Zeroes are trying to escort a LBA strike from Java... wow, you better not call it a design decision but a bug instead because bugs get fixed while design decisions were near perfect as we know... can we call it a bug please? It sure brings up bugged results... stupid coordination "routine" (bbd = bug by design) sends out 1/3 of KB´s fighters on a failed escort attempt that then turns out to be a mega sweep on 3 different altitudes with everything showing up together, something you are unable to ORDER... heck, this all is so stupid it should have never passed beta... in 99% of the time your sweeps look so stupid you can only shake your head but if a carrier TF fails to do a silly attempt of escorting a land based strike then you get 93 fighters into one sweep... so SILLY! 80% of the bombers failed to locate the target due to range or weather or they failed to link up... funny, even the game´s messages talk about failures all the time... even more funny that in this PBEM KB didn´t fail to send a strike consisting of 505 aircraft even though that´s about twice the number of ac in one wave the carriers could have sent in real life... omg, CDI vs NOD...

why we get a (-) for op mode is beyond me because the units are in combat mode of course... the Japanese won´t have a chance to kick the paras off the island because I bet there aren´t any units prepped for this dot base (so no amphib landing) and his paras are just too weak while we are flying in another para unit and are moving in a USMC raider btn by fast transport... the paras are tasked to move on Waingapoe now to take the airfield (size 2)... a USN base force and the raider btn will hold the dot base here and LCT will bring in more supplies... both Memboro and Waingapoe can be built up to size 7 airfields which brings Soerabaja into P-38 range...

Post by castor troy »

The 4E attack on KB has cost us a whopping 4 bombers, we lost 5 PBY again though... seriously doubt that Rainer will move KB any closer to Dili, even though you can be sure that at least 75% of the bombers would fail to launch or fail to locate the target...

wouldn´t it be great to get a full sized carrier strike or LBA strike that actually got some teeth against KB? Not much left of KB´s Cap...

No Castor, it wouldn't be great. [:D]
Using heavy bombers this way you make it - a sponge to lessen and wipe the KB's CAP - seems pretty unfair to any JFB given the game routine of almost indestructible Allied 4Es. [;)]

well, as long as KB could send a 505 aircraft strike (twice as much a wave could be in real life) A YEAR AGO (with at least 4 carriers in total less than now and not all carriers in one basket) I guess I don´t feel for them facing my 4Es. [:'(]

Ternate falls and we´re already moving in construction units to build up that place asap... as soon as Ternate has reached level 6 airfield (max size, currently level 3) we can attempt the jump to Menado (four hexes from Ternate)... we´re indetifying a huge buildup on Mindanoa, looks like that´s the place where Rainer really wants to start his defense... some 250 aircraft (mostly fighters) and no less than 40 units are on the island, mostly massing at Davao and in the North... the biggest problem for the Japanese will be the fact that there are something like a dozen bases I could land on [:D] our biggest problem is the fact that radar works now, while sweeps look as silly as they always did which means wearing down the enemy´s airfields is going to be near impossible (or only as long as we accept to lose months of fighter replacements in a week) and therefore a landing could become really bloody because without knocking out the airfields, the enemy is going to knock out parts of our fleets...

the enemy is hardly able to keep up the damage at Vinh now and in a couple of weeks we´re going to have two RAF base forces at the base to provide some 3.7 inch guns and four radar sets... we´re then going to also send some fighters now and then, won´t base them there all the time as Vinh can be bombarded from the Sea and I don´t want to lose precious P-47 to enemy cruisers...

CAP engaged:
248th Sentai with Ki-44-IIa Tojo (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
3 plane(s) not yet engaged, 0 being recalled, 0 out of immediate contact.
Group patrol altitude is 6000 , scrambling fighters between 2000 and 3000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 86 minutes

the fact that the air coordination bug is then followed by the air bug then always gives you really great results that are the 1:1 mirror of what you could expect in real life... you order 75 Lightnings on a sweep and the enemy got 21 Tojos in the air... your P-38 get a tactical advantage (= height), your P-38 outnumber the enemy 3.5:1 (advantage?), your P-38 squadrons are a flying circus with aces in the dozens and the result is your P-38 losing to the Tojos that get the dive while being 33000ft lower than the attacker... the Tojos get a 3:1 kill rate with the dive at 6000ft... you may have noted how it looks like sending 75 P-38 on a sweep... 18,18,23,15... now add in radar and more than 21 Tojos in the air...

and all this perfectly works for BOTH sides, it´s not side related... it´s bugged, the whole design is a serious flaw as it is now... it´s kind of the same flaw as the bounce in WITP that always favoured the side with radar coverage... as it is now, it´s just a strange throw of dices like you have in a board game a la risk... I like risk, but when I´ve played risk 20 years ago I knew what I got, all Armies the same and dice from 1-6... now I´m told I should have something different but it´s nothing but die rolls all the time when it just doesn´t matter what you do or if you should have an advantage or not, this was just yet another excellent example for this... I wonder how a real life encounter would have looked like between 74 P-38 ordered to sweep a base, piloted by mostly aces and they would meet 21 Tojos in a lower position... but this thought already fails on the first second when the sweep has to pass the coordination bug... eh, flaw... eh, routine...

it´s just a little encounter without any impact on the war but exactly these encounters rob me so much of enjoying the game...

what did I say? what did I say? [:D] at some point Rainer had to run out of luck and would have to pay for running over my subs all the time... first we sink Amagi, now S-27 puts a Mk-10 into Kaga that causes an ammo stroage explosion... the ship isn´t far from Soerabaja and I don´t expect her to be sunk but I sure expect her to be out of the war for a couple of months...

as if hitting Kaga wouldn´t be enough, S-27 also attacks CV Hiryu that is passing along in another TF... a single Mk-10 hits home and S-27 gets away with a couple of near misses, retiring to Darwin now with 12 sys damage... very well done! the last four attacks on enemy carriers all were succesfull, two in a row on Amagi that sunk her and now these two attacks on Kaga and Hiryu... means KB´s aircraft number is down by some 200 aircraft for the moment... probably strenght now around 800 carrier based ac as Rainer also seems to use all his available carriers in one spot, just as we do...

as both damaged carriers are expected to head straight back to Soerabaja we´ve ordered halve a dozen subs in the area into intercept position between KB´s location now and Soerabaja... another two torps hitting one of the carriers could knock it out... lesson today: you should not overstretch your luck because at some point, you´re just going to run out of it... hmm... there is radar at Ternate but seemed not to have picked up something, nevertheless we get more or less all our fighters into the air (is radar now always working even though the raid seems not to be spotted - if spotted, there should be a "raid detected by radar" message during the replay)... the outcome here is a radar - dive - massacre session... all Zeroes were shot down or damaged for no Corsair lost... 6000ft did not work at all for the Zekes...

the Zekes are followed by a dozen Georges at 6000ft and the Georges suffer the same faith as the Zekes... radar - dive - massacre session... two dozen enemy fighters shot down for not a single loss within the fighters on Cap... out of 54 fighters at Ternate we had 52 operational and even without radar actually DETECTING the raid there were 48 fighters in the air to meet the Zekes and after having 3 or 4 damaged there were still 45 in the air to meet the Georges... and all this with a setting of 40% Cap and 30% rest... soo...... it´s too early to make a claim but if I only look at this turn then I would say land based radar was fixed broken... it now works... yeah, according to these two engagements above it now even works if it HASN´T detected something... only a suspicion from this turn, I sure am going to keep an eye on this... it nevertheless is totally strange...

if radar now always detects something while it actually failed then this would be just as off as the broken land based radar before the patch...

in this case, the raid actually was detected by radar (also got the message during the replay) and if you look at the number of Corsairs then it´s the same as above when the strikes WEREN´T detected... paranoia? More Zekes were shot down as well as a good number of Lillies... Rainer obviously didn´t expect my Corsairs at the base, nothing but luck for us here, we just moved them in...

the result of this turn with two dozen enemy fighters shot down for not a single Corsair lost is something I leave to the audience to decide if that´s a good or bad outcome...

in total an excellent day for our airforce... if the P-47 would have done something against the enemy medium bombers above Vinh we could have shot down a hundred enemy ac for nearly no loss on our side... with over 60 enemies downed we can´t complain though...

In the successful intercepts the time to reach interception was anywhere from 1 minute to 30 minutes. In the final unsuccessful intercept the P-47s took an hour to get to interception. Maybe that's why the P-47s didn't intercept - they didn't get to the bombers on time.

Which raises the question, why did it take the P-47s an hour to reach the last medium bomber attack area?

It only took the P-47s 1 minute to intercept the Zeros at the same location. But that occured before the medium bomber attack.

Odd....

Maybe the P-47s went back to base to refuel... [;)]

this should change when we´ve got radar at Vinh but for now we have to concentrate our radar at Hanoi... at least as long until I´m sure that one radar set at a base is enough to have all fighters on Cap even if it doesn´t detect anything... [:D]
