Italian Front
Situation Report Oct 14th 1944 Turn 68
Army Group C

Western Allied attacks on the Italian front for the most part appear to be losing there intensity, across the front line there was a lull in most sectors giving time for Axis forces to resupply and repair defences, on the Adriatic the US Naval force withdraw only to be replaced by British ships, this is still of great concern for Kurt Zeitzler and his Command.

On the Coast there was no major ground fighting at all allowing LXXXX ArmeeKorps troops some brief respite to restock units with ammunition and to withdraw some damaged armoured vehicles for repairs, while the constant enemy artillery barrages were absent the Allied air forces maintained there bombing efforts but even these were much smaller.
Further inland the enemy however was still active continuing to assault 14th Armee lines in the hope of making a breakthrough, two massive attacks were launched towards Capua while a number of secondary attacks took place to the north of the main assault, the enemy advance on both positions were held by determined resistence.

In the centre Hube's Panzer troops also had a quiet week with little activity apart from the occasional bombing attacks on the units forward defences.
On the Adriatic coast 10th Armee units arrived and began to deploy behind the Port of Termoli however there appears to be no indication of any imminent seaborne invasion attempt yet.
At Termoli itself the Allies made two attempts to take the city with a combined assault on two fronts but were easily held up by the defenders, the enemy was forced back with heavy losses.

late in the week the 62nd Infantry arrives at the town of Pontoise north west of Paris part of the heavy buildup of forces redeployed west as well as reserve forces released by The Supreme command which seems timely as The Allies have moved a Naval Task Force off the coast off coast of le Harve.
The 716th Inf Div reinforcing the garrison from XXV ArmeeKorps as 7th Armee prepares for a possible new seaborne assault.

While Fahrmbacher organises the defences at Le Harve his troops defending the beach positions come under attack, an armoured assault by the US 13th Corps attempts to drive back 94th, 343rd and 346th inf Divs as the enemy lands elements of the 1st Can Army as well as Brit forces, US 7th Armoured Div makes three attacks over the week but can make no ground against determined Axis defence.

On 15th Armee front The Allies launch a number of attacks against LXVI ArmeeKorps lines, a joint Can / Brit assault against heavily fortified defences gains little ground for high losses, a second attack yields more losses for the enemy as our fallschirmjaeger troops halt this advance, the Brit launch one more final attempt to expand there beachhead perimeter but fail and are pushed back.

Southern France

For well over a month Axis forces had held an iron grip on the Allied beach perimeter, containing the situation so well that the enemy had not even made any offensive attacks on German forces, content to remain dug in along a 30 mile stretch of coast line which encompassed the city of Canne and the makeshift port constructed there , along with the town of Cogolin where it was reported the enemy were hurriedly building an airfield.
While enemy continues to conduct air operations over the battlefield the sea lanes still remain contested and supplies to the beachhead have been severely restricted for the Allies. The winter weather is approaching, the second front in France is in serious trouble things are looking grim for the US 7th Army and the Free French troops stuck on the beach in the south.

Eastern Front
Situation Report Oct 19th 1944 Turn 101

Army Group North

The weather continues to worsen in the northern regions of the front as the constant heavy rain makes visibility more difficult for forward observer units, the good news the rail line to Yoshkar-Ola is completed so resupply conditions should vastly improve for Axis forces.
Ernst Busch moves his Headquarters to the Soviet city's military command centre and closer to the front line as reports come in of more enemy activity.

Further south more reports of Red Army tank units advancing towards 4th Armee positions, however Ferdinand Schaal's LVI Pz Korps which is defending the line from Kamskoe-Ustye to Tetyushi relays a report to command that the enemy has not attempted to cross the river or showed signs of attacking.

Army Group Centre

At the city of Engels units of the 337th Inf Div report tank formations moving in columns from the direction of Urbakh a rail centre that links the enemies main supply lines to its southern forces, Axis control of the rail junction would severely disrupt the flow of men and materials from the new Soviet Capital at Kuybyshev to the Red Army forces on the Caspian front.
Since no other enemy units have been sighted as of yet it may just be another recon mission by the enemy however XIII ArmeeKorps ( 9th Armee ) and XXXIX Pz Korps ( 2nd Armee ) begin to mobilise for action.

Eastern front
Situation Report Oct 19th 1944 Turn 101
Army Group A

Operation Wintermärchen
Code Name for the offensive aimed at destroying 4th Ukrainian Front ( 1st Guards Tank Army, 5th Guards Army and Pliev Cav / Mech Tank Army )

Soviet forces have once again pulled back from there positions along the Volga north of Stalingrad and redeployed south to the Caspian front, the manoeuvre now allows 4th Pz Armee to cross the Volga uncontested, with no supporting infantry Red Army tank formations are spread thin and vulnerable to encirclement, FM lindemann orders the offensive to begin.
On 4th Pz Armee's northern flank Herbert loch's XXVIII ArmeeKorps advances across the Volga to cover General Nehring's armour, loch's Infantry push forward on a 40-mile front towards Elton as XXXXVIII Pz Korps crosses the many bridges now constructed over the river north and south of the town of Dubovka facing no opposition. Moving north then swinging east Schlemmer's Panzer's advanced behind the Soviet armour with support by the two Panzer Div's from LV ArmeeKorps, the northern arm of the operation had virtually cut off 5 Tank Corps ( 8th, 9th, 10, 13th, and 14th ) within a matter of days, the enemy caught by surprise as both Schlemmer and Volckamer's Panzer's sealed off any escape routes north, XXIX ArmeeKorps ( Decker ) and XI ArmeeKorps ( Kreyshing ) Infantry began to secure the left flank of the pocket.
As 4th Pz Armee began its operation to cut off any possible escape north for Red Army units Stemmermann's 18th Armee pushed directly north from there fortified positions, the infantry were able to advance through gaps in the Soviet line, with no infantry support of there own Axis forces advanced through undefended areas between the enemy tank formations with relative ease allowing 18th Armee and link up with Nehrings Armee by weeks ends, there was no real attempts by the enemy to break out as Infantry from XXVI ( Von Leyser ) I ( Von Both ) ArmeeKorps and XXIV Pz Korps ( Knobelsdorff ) consolidated the encirclement.
Soviet reinforcements arrived but there advance was halted by our infantry screen covering the north, the speed of the Axis operation catching the enemy by surprise.

Situation Report Oct 19th 1944 Turn 101

Operation Wintermärchen

Kleist's Army Group began simultaneous operations with Army Group A, Paulus 6th Armee began moving out of its fortified defences and pushing north, Hans Jordan's VI ArmeeKorps four Divisions moving from Baskunchak to link up with 18th Armee cutting off three tank units including the Soviet 27th Tank Corps without facing any real opposition, Infantry from VIII ArmeeKorps ( Schulz ) and XI SS Pz Korps ( Kleinheisterkamp ) begin engaging two enemy tank corps north of Kharabali tying down the Soviet troops giving time for 17th Armee units to move behind the enemies position.
With 6th Armee keeping the enemy occupied Ruoff's mobile forces begin to cross the smaller tributaries of the Volga then swing northwest, Felix Steiner's III SS Pz Korps moving with speed linked up with VI ArmeeKorps creating an outer pincer while Ott's ( LII ArmeeKorps ) consolidated the encirclement of the central pocket with III Pz Korps ( Gareis ) ensuring none of the Soviets could escape the trap. Rudolf Konrad's XXXIX Mountain ArmeeKorps advanced directly north to cover any attempts by enemy reinforcements to disrupt the operation.

On the Caspian coast Breith's Panzer's advanced forward from the Volga against little opposition, Soviet resistance collapsed quickly as Herrlein ( XXXX Pz Korps ), Graeser ( Felderrnhalle Pz Korps ) and Vierow's ( XX ArmeeKorps ) trapped two tank corps ( 3rd and 4th ) in a marshy area on the Caspian coast. Trapped in the three major pockets an estimated 85,000 men, an ultimatum has been sent to each pocket but as yet no reply.

Normandy

With enemy transport ships continuing to remain off the French coast and preparing to land more Allied troops to reinforce the defenders holding whats left of the beachhead General Dietrich launches an assault against the Brit Airborne Corps at Fecamp expecting to find troops from the Can 2nd Corps defending the town I SS Pz Korps clash with the Brit 3rd Inf Div only, supported by Von Zangen's LXXXIV ArmeeKorps the attack is halted but the enemy position is on the verge of collapsing.

Reports indicate the Can 2nd Corps has been withdrawn and the enemy is attempting to land British paratroops, on news of this reaching Rommel the Feldmarschall orders every available Panzer division to launch an all out attack, Herr's LXXVI Pz Korps , Von Schweppenburg's LVII Pz Korps and Adolf Kuntzen's LXXXI ArmeeKorps together with I SS Pz Korps launch a massive assault with nearly 90,000 men and over 600 Panzer's, the British defenders are hit on three fronts and driven from the town as German forces advance onto the beaches before the Allies can land more troops.
The Allied beachhead is now in a precarious position with the Can 1st Army virtually isolated.

On the Adriatic coast the Allied Naval Task Force remains close inshore to the town of Termoli, German forces deploy in readiness to counter any seaborne landings behind our lines.

Volturno sector

Attacking along the coast towards Grazzanise three Allied Corps are stopped cold by SS Panzer troops suffering heavy losses before even reaching any river crossings, unable to break the our defence line the enemy regroups and launches an armoured assault led by the 6th SA Armoured Div, making some ground before being pushed back.

Normandy

The position at Normandy seems dire for the enemy with the Can 1st Army now pocketed and all but isolated on a 10 mile beachhead there only life line the Allied Naval Task Force out in the channel, however our forces are exhausted from the heavy fighting these past few weeks including the recent major assaults on the enemy to retake lost ground.
At the town of Fecamp the 462nd Inf Div moves to support 24th Panzer and 116th Panzer divisions, both units in bad shape from sustained battle, the 24th down to 46 AFV the 116th not much better off with both units now down to half there troop compliment, the situation still remains fluid despite the hard fought victory the enemy could still counterattack, twice already our forces had retaken the town only to be driven out.

0400 Hours

German Commanders fears are confirmed The US 13th Corps 7th Armoured launches a counterattack enemy tanks begin to punch through our defensive lines pushing troops back through the town, 116th Panzer's position collapses and the unit falls back leaving just the 24th Panzer and 462nd Inf to hold back US armour, after three days of heavy fighting the enemy pauses its assault only to relaunch the attack, the 24th Panzer Division collapses and US forces begin to establish further control of strong points in and around the town centre, with US tanks preparing for a final push to retake Fecamp a counterattack by the 6th Fallschirmjaeger Division stops the enemy armour from further advance and forces the US troops to fall back, supported by 462nd Infantry the Paratroops retake control. Losses on both sides high but the enemy was prevented from retaking the town.

With the failure of there last attack to push our forces out of Fecamp and extend there perimeter the Allied position seems to be in a state of disarray, Axis observer units stationed along the coast report that enemy troop ships are no longer attempting to disembark ground forces at the Allied landing site, the Allied warships offshore continue to maintain gunfire support though the intensity has receded greatly.
At 7th Armee Headquarters Dollmann receives the latest Intelligence reports of the Allied situation, the General feeling confident begins to formulate an attack plan.

Arriving at FM Rommel's Headquarters in Paris Dollmann proposes a combined assault by his Armee and with all available forces of General Von Stuelpnagel's Armee, the German air force would be tasked with clearing the beachhead of enemy aircraft so as not to impede the ground assault.
Rommel agrees to the plan however the weather continues to make conditions difficult and the Allied position is heavily fortified and enemy air power could greatly effect the operation.

While there still remains elements of the Allied Naval Force off the coast of Normandy what enemy forces not captured on the beaches managed to escape before our forces overran there positions, news quickly reached Berlin of the success and while in the short term the enemy is in no position to launch a fresh invasion after this disaster OKW is still wary of a possible future attempt.
Victory celebrations for now are on hold as Rommel orders Commanders to make preparations for units to begin withdrawal and return to there assigned coastal zones, during the course the battles in Normandy whole stretches of the French coast line were left undefended.

Many units are depleted of equipment, weapons, munitions, armour and above all manpower OKW first priority is to rebuild the Westheer as quickly as possible, beach defences will also need to be rebuilt.

Von Manteuffel and Brandenberger finally get the opportunity to conduct there offensive operation they have been consistently lobbying for at great lengths for some time.
With major rail networks in both Armies sectors almost complete, the supply situation has improved greatly.
