One thing about the ground war mechanics in WitP AE. I cannot park next to a river crossing and bombard. Rather I have to find other means of preparing the target for a river crossing. My only choice is the use of Strat bombers to support the operation. In about a month Ayuthia will be ready for our invasion.

The game has interesting mixed matches of concepts that affects play greatly. One problem is an operational context of a river crossing [immediate shock attack for example] and the hex size being 46 miles. So in the ground war we have a map designed around a stratigic hex size. How does this effect game play? Well, to cross a river one would park artillery next the the river and begin to prepare the other side. Such operational maneuver would require hexes of about 6 - 10 miles not 46 miles. This of course does not work for the war at sea at all.

So .. because I cannot park 100 25 pounders next to a river side and bombard across I use 125 Heavy bombers .. and achieve similar results. Lots of things have to be overlooked and abstrated in this game or it becomes a constant arguement of history vs. this game. .....

What is interesting is the escorts .. 30 Zeros .. it is going to be tough to defends our shipping in and out of Rangoon, Ramree Island does not propergate supply to Rangoon yet and supply will not move to Pegu .. so more of this ships will have to commit suicide .. This also tells me that I have to move the Eatern Fleet unit over the road to Rangoon ..

Excellent idea on moving by transport. It will actually take less time for 200 transports at 2 squads each to get these guys to Rangoon. I think I was not considering this because Eastern fleet is 5600 men. It took a week to move one Chindit regment!

Rangoon is mine . 11 hexes away vs. 15 for Akyab ...and Rangoon in range of Port Blair with 175 unescorted 4E's and 2E's. The crux .. 74 fighters including 2 Sendai of Zeros with elite pilots. I estimate 20% losses ... and despite my opponents grumbling and outright protests .. I think need these bombers to reduce Ayruthia. [;)] The IJ are building a good defense here. For example now occupying the jungle hex 57-61 to protect Nakkon Ratchasmia from being surrounded and reduce laterial LOC's. The long and short of it .. It is a real toss up .. but I am agreeing with you .. a big run will be needed with the next convoy.

As far as LRCAP .. yep I had 200 fighters on LRCAP over those hexes .. but they did not fly ...the game has its mechanics too .. instead 6 P40's flew over an USA division and shot down some unescorted bombers What a game! [:'(]

Here is Southeast Asia as of 29 MAY 43.

The IJ have invested 100K troops into Thailand to defend Bangkok. Ayruthia is the "Bastogne" of Thailand with all the roads leading to Bangkok going through this point. I must have this railway to continue operations here. To take Ayruthia we are moving 2000 AV from Udon Thani. The base has zero supplies but so far the troops have supplies. I suspect after the first attack we will be in trouble, but unitl then we advance toward Nakkon Ratchasmia. Another 2000 AV advances south creating a pincher movement. Eventually cutting LOC's to Bangkok. Then the rest of the I AUS Corps arrive to seige Bangkok. We should be seigeing Nakkon Ratchasmia June 15th to kick off this operation.

The main obsticle to the plan is supply. No supplies yet are moving from Rangoon anywhere east. Nor are supplies moving from Moulmein. So we try and flood the area with supplies via the seaborne route .... but 25 Betty's with 75 Zero's are discourging this operation. We got 20K supplies in but our suicide xAKL's were "suicided". For some reason no fighters flew LRCAP [&:]

Well another convoy is coming through .. I might have to take NY59Giants prodding and go ahead and sacrifice my 4E's and 2E's to teh Zeros and shutdown Port Blair in conjuction with a convoy ..maximizing the time the field is damaged with the convoy movement.

There has been a rash of surprise KB attacks involving the Southwest Pacfic as of late. Each AAR documents some sort of tracking of the Allies and the KB coming out from nowhere to strike with exterme proficiency. I cannot let this happen. As we start thinking of cleansing NG / Solomon's of LYB scum we are using our new found bases in the Marshalls and Kuassie Island to extend search arcs deep into where the KB might be thinking of an ambush.

So far I have not floated any CV's into areas not covered by LBA .. it has been a good strategy ...

Very simply the IJ cannot defend open terrain but continue to do so. I would home rule my bombing but attacking Jungle hexes yields very little results for the effort. Thus teh defense is not borking ground bombing in my view but for the IJ to defend jungle hexes and provide some aircover. The IJ insist that it would be impossible for the Allies to attack Burma for various reasons that do not align with history. But I can say .. if the IJ does not defend Burma at the Indian border-- there is little friendly terrain until the Indiochina border to stop a determined offense. The IJ can get into the hair of the Allies here with seapower but there is very little options in terms of stopping things from an eventual conclusion. Lesson: Defend Burma at the Indian Border ...
