That's true enough Castor, I've not trained the Nicks in naval bombing yet; they're mostly used as a 4E deterrent over Rangoon.
I hope to be able to afford to use some in this role in the future though, Nicks are much less vulnerable than Kate's and Val's.
Another reason not to assume that Andy will run short of supplies...either in Oz or in Burma [:'(]
- The goal has always been to to prolong the fighting in Australia into 43 and then withdraw with minimal casualties.
No reason to change these plans and risk major losses against restricted enemy units. All we can gain is a little time.
Yep, that attack hurt the Chinese! [8D]
I'm obviously not strong enough to defeat such huge Chinese armies in defensive terrain or fortified cities.
The gains must be won by slowly nibbling away at exposed units and bases.
Right now I'm feeling stronger than ever before; most fronts are solid and we have a clear superiority in the air, sea and on land.
So maybe it's time for cunning plans again [8D]

Surface Combat
I sent in the dogs of war today to destroy enemy supply convoys at Chittagong.
The weakened enemy based around the light cruiser Emerald fought hard and shot up our cruiser and a destroyer.
- A long range torpedo hit the Emerald and put her out of the action in a prolonged series of engagements stretching
from night to day combat!

Air Combat
In the air heavy 4E formations hit Magwe while Allied mediums hit our recon regiment west of
Shwebo. We concentrated on Chittagong, shooting down numerous CAP fighters and torpedoing 5 ships
including a destroyer that sank. Chittagong airfields were also hit.
In total 27 enemy ac were destroyed while we lost 25.
- Our sweepers often go in after our bombers, like our Nell's that returned in the PM phase.
This is costly as these pilots were elite (3 torp hits by 3 Nells that got through before being shot down
after the attack).
Still, we're causing attrition damage on the enemy.

Hi PzB!
Since you attacked with your bombers at 17k anyway why don´t you simply set part of the sweep (e.g. the Zekes that ran in on 14k)
to 17k also? This way you improve coordination chances which means in case of success the sweepers go in before the strike.
In many respects that what I did LeBaron.
The Naval bombers and 36 Zeke's were set to 14k feet.
- The Army bombers hitting Chittagong were set to 15k feet with dedicated Tojo and Oscar escorts.
Dedicated sweepers then went in at 25 and 30k feet.
What I didn't want was the Zeke's with their 14 hex long range to escort some of the less valuable army bombers and then let the naval bombers be slaughtered.
The range to the position of Allied ships could very well be at sea outisde Army fighter range.
Ideally the Tojo's would have swept at 30k feet before the naval strike, but so doesn't happen.
All naval bombers did go in escorted, the small Nell packet just went in first and got wiped out in the PM turn.
Such is hard to coordinate better, more coordinated sweepers (naval - army) at 14k feet perhaps?
"The problem in defense is how far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without"
- Dwight D. Eisenhower
It depends on your primary goal and is a tradeoff.
If your goal is to assure maximum security for your bombers I´d set the sweeping squads to the attack altitude (in this case 15k) to
maximize chances that the sweep arrives before the bombers.
If your goal is to do max damage to the CAP and accept a bit more risk for your bombers in case a small part comes in separately, coordination with
the escorts fail or you generall think your escort cannot take on the CAP but still want to sweep the target hex then the sweep should naturally be
higher, but has so has a high chance to arrive late to help the strike.
Basically I like the setup.
Last thing is only a guess, but it could be that the set altitude influences the arrival time on target.
Since I don't want any small packet strike to go in alone I have set the Nells and Betty's to attack at the same altitude, but this hasn't happened yet.
- What does happen is that the Betty unit (36 ac) attack by its own and then the small Nell unit (9 ac) does the same. The size 36 Zero unit is then divided to provide escorts for the 2 strikes.
For now I will stand down the decimated Nell's and in the future provide a dedicated escort for them, either at the same or a slightly different altitude.
Guess that's as much as can be done; each time I expect naval targets in Akyba - Cox's or Chittagong I can order an army fighter unit to sweep the base at 14k feet.
Welcome back Mynok, were have you been? [:)]

Today I had to watch 20 unopposed Allied fighter sweeps over Burma by ca 230 fighters.
This is so tedious that I want nothing but close down the entire theatre!
- I observe only 1 Allied op loss this turn after 4-500 planes have swept and bombed in Burma.
I varied attack altitude for our bombers in India today and attempted many smaller attacks instead
of a few large ones. Most attacks went in against a single gun regiment....ack.
Chinese airfields are also bombed regularly, but this is of no interest and I remove these reports.
May do the same with the Allied airstrikes in Burma unless something specific happens.

"The problem in defense is how far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without"

I noticed that Betty/Nells don´t like coordination myself.
Between those airframes is a cruise speed differential of 23kts. Maybe thats enough already to decrease coordination chances.

Today's issue: Night bombing
So far night bombing has been working fairly well, losses have been acceptable - until today.
32 enemy night bombers hit Rangoon and destroy 23 ac on the ground [:(]
- Andy agrees that this is out of whack and will halt his night bombing missions until this can be
looked into. It was a clear night, but nevertheless this would have been an astounding good result even
during daytime.
To me it seems like the only night bombing that is realistic is city bombing and night naval attacks
be veteran-elite naval air units. Well, Japanese bombers are so useless that they never destroy more than
1 or 2 ac on the ground, it's the Allied uber bombers that is the problem.

- Andy agrees that this is out of whack and will halt his night bombing missions until this can be

I'm not so sure about that - even putting daytime fighters on night duty seems to greatly reduce the damage done by night bombing. Try it out.
Day fighters on night CAP...that sounds logical!
- Night bombers that should be glad to find a city but are blessed with the ability to blow up whole air wings on airfields; YES, that has to be it!
We use day fighters that wouldn't be allowed to fly at night as a deterrent! [:D]
Sorry for the slight sarcasm, think I need to become a programmer to understand how difficult it must be to tweak this correctly.
I'm building up a little frustration with the ever increasing air war in Burma, numbers just increase each turn and dozens of waves of Allied ac drone out to
attack our bases. Each time Andy want's to close or destroy something he can concentrate all his air power on it and voila. We on the other hand can do fine little to prevent it and can't
even keep Akyab closed permanently.
Still we shot down some ac today and bombed Chittagong again, destroying another couple of handfuls of ac on the ground.
There are hundreds of aux ac in this base that is flying out supplies to the advancing army.
My problem is that supplies doesn't flow into Swhebo, all units are constantly red. Mandalay on the other side of the river is all ok.
Not sure I can make a stand at Shwebo, need to pull out and counterattack after refilling supplies...
Despite the hundreds of supply ac I think Japan should be more able to supply the troops in Burma than the Allies while supporting 45 units marching through the jungle and into the basin.
Bringing in the 8th Area Army (arrived very understrength) to Rangoon to try to correct this.

Nuku Hiva is captured and we drive the Chindits back toward Akyab.
Andy launches small para units to recapture the islands between Normanton and Darwin.
- Obviously he wants to build airbases so I guess we have to take them back again...

LOL! Wonder what it takes to come up with a plan to go to Africa [:)]
I've only returned the combat replay for this turn to Andy; going away for a few days.
- Also feel that I need to charge the batteries cause the crescendo in the air over Burma is whitling away my motivation to play.
I've not edited the air combat text today, so you can see the same I have to click my way through each turn.
This turn 220 Allied fighers performed sweep and escort operations to support 227 medium and 79 heavy bombers.
Taung Gyi was demolished and utterly closed; we didn't loose to many ac on the ground as I don't dare to have ac on the ground.
- Most ac are either sweeping, escorting, performing recon or bombing missions.
Still, both Magwe and Taung Gyi are now closed and I can't base aircraft in the forward bases.
We destroy more ac than we loose, but enemy numbers just keep increasing.
Today we sank another small convoy of Chittagong and lost a minelayer to Calcutta based SBDs as we try to sneak in a few mines.
I think we have stronger ground formations and better fighters than the Allies, but US medium and heavy bombers make the entire difference and it's quite
a tough task to perform ground operations when they keep knocking out our airfields and bombing all our ground troops with impunity. What use do I have for 300 good fighters
if I never can get to the bombers (15 x sweeps make sure of that) or challenge the Allied fighters (a standing CAP against 12x sweeps is a loosing proposition)?
Andy says he loves to play SEAC and Burma and spends most of his time in this theatre [8|]
Of course it's opposite with me and I actually invaded India in our last game to get rid of the Burma theatre.
Since it's not an option to loose Burma to the Allies in 42-43, that would be the beginning of the end for Japan, I need to bring in more troops and ac
and continously escalate the war in the theatre I like the least. Told Andy that I'm not sure I can stand hundreds of air strikes in Burma for years to come.
- It's a true eye opener; I can survive loosing the entire KB and fight on, but finding motivation to keep up the struggle in Burma is going to be hard.
Taking 2 days off to begin with [;)]

Well, it takes just as much to go in a humanitarian mode as it does in a military mode I can assure you. And in each case the likelihood of coming down with the crud is equal, as my wife and I can attest.
"Measure civilization by the ability of citizens to mock government with impunity" -- Unknown
When I was a kid I read a book by a British WWII fighter pilot. One of his assignments was as a night fighter - in a day fighter aircraft! IRL they use what they have when they have it for what they need it for. [:)]
I realised, that it shows last message title in last post listing, so nothing better like small deception.
Looks like Japan airforce can not withdraw, because they will be bombarded on airfields anyway, so the only option is to fight.
Since there are many Allied sweep attacks, but mostly with less than 15 fighters, Japan only needs to keep 20-25 planes in the air area all the time. At least for fighter combat. Best of all, Allied bombers are all unescorted. So here is plan outline:
Attacked bases in Burma (around Mandalay) are positioned in cluster, one next to another. Place maximum number of TOJO units in EVERY base. Be careful NOT to overstack them. Put them on full CAP. Plus, every nearby base (like Lashio, and Chiang Mai), should have some A6M2, A6M3, NICK, or OSCAR units, put on LRCAP over one of those bases in cluster. As much bases, as possible, should be covered, to avoid any bad weather incidents.
That way, even, when CAP on original, attacked base will gone down, setup should guarantee protection. If only 3-4 planes from every group leak, LRCAP, or leak from nearby LRCAP to attacked base, 6 different units would be enough to keep 20 fighters in air. The best part is, that there is always only small number of planes leaking, so leaving most of it out of combat in current engagement, and that with time, more leak to attacked area, so even, when fighters on original base will land because of out of ammo/fuel, there will be more planes from leaking CAP.
You don't need air support for all this groups, because LRCAP will be far too tired after two days of combat, so this is not prolonged plan anyway. If Japan manage, to get 50 fighters, after sweeps, there should be slaughter of Allied 2E bombers. So it would be better to place all planes at bombers altitude, around 15000 or even lower.
Even, when loses will be bad, Japan currently can afford even 1:3 ratio, considering both sides productions. Shot down bombers will cause drop in morale, so even less bombers will fly next day.
As for supply problems:
All those Japan bombardments, with escort, use at least 500 supply a day. Plus, with new rules, supply hits causes more damage, depending of "device" size (I am guessing hit from basic version was considered for 30kg bombs, so with 500lb it is 8 times more, if it was 5 supplies for hit for 30kg (wild guess), now it will be 5*8=40 for 250kg. 20 hits per day: 40*20=800). Plus all those daily Allied bombardments, and repairs. Sum is like 2000-3000 at least? Daily, only for air operations, bombardments and repairs. Plus supply for constantly attacked units, plus supply for expanding bases. So 5000 a day could not be enough. And now there will be land battle. Erm, does that mean, that Japan needs 100k supply convoy to Burma every week?
Oh, and do not send bombers at extended range. Half payload is such a waste. After all, it is number of dropped bombs, what counts, not attacking planes.
As for AUSTRALIA supply. I was wrong:
Manual page 250. I am wondering what is actually "supply value" to begin with. In WPO it was 100, in WitP it was 100, or 120.
So there is table of movement costs at page 189. Every clear hex, or Trail costs 10 points (so 10 hexes*10 points should be maximum length of supply chain). Secondary Roads costs 5, Main Roads costs 3.
Secondary is kinda orange color, Main is gray, and Trail... is part of Railway and is not visible on map (go figure). So... in Australia they will be supplied as long as supply goes by roads. If roads are cut off, 10 hexes of clear terrain cut all supply (Jungle costs 20). Those para remnants near Cloncurry could be useful in "cutting" matter. And maybe some amphibious assault to cut northern road? Are there HR for dropping paras not in bases? After all, Allies are already 350 miles from nearest base.
As for "guessing" where Enterprise is. Most sightings reports CA, which is total bullshit, but it is very hard to miss Battleship, and I don't think I have ever seen misidentified Carrier. So... search the ports, there are probably only 3-4 places, where it could be (Pearl Harbor, San Francisco, and Los Angeles?). That is exactly, what the GLENs are for. Right?
ORIGINAL: PzB
5577 Allied sorties, it was over 5800 at 31th. Considering than in peak, they had over 6000, so around 500 less already.
Since CV planes are mostly not flying now (that should be around 200-300), so Allies are short at least 100-150 frontline planes, since Palmyra attack.
PS. I wouldn't turn off Armament production. There is graph somewhere, which indicates, that ultimately, there is not enough points, somewhere in 43-44. And that is without any losses. OK, maybe graph was for original WITP, but someone counted, that to fill all units in China, it is like 18 months of full production? Some units there beginning at only 1/3 TOE.
