using Manado´s level 9 airfield complex to full success now, we can attack every base on Mindanao and also the whole South and South East coast of Borneo... we´ll soon deny the enemy of more than 50% of Borneo´s oil fields... as it stands now, there are only small garissons at Balikpapan, Samarinda and Tarakan so knocking out the airfields won´t be that hard I guess... the Corsairs get the dive and wreck havoc within the scrambling Zekes...

ordered lots of fighter squadrons to sweep Cagayan today in front of our B-24 plastering the base... we had intel about lots of fighters, I was glad to see them mostly being Zekes... the first squadron of Corsairs was hit quite hard though due to facing 2.5:1 odds as we get the usual "funny" way our fighter squadrons fighting their own private war against the Japanese...

this squadron lost 6 Corsairs in the end with 4 pilots MIA/KIA... most of the Zekes were only damaged this time...

training strike... not sure these Ventura squadrons will ever get the chance to drop bombs on enemy ships... the whole IJN is hiding somewhere... at some point Rainer will have missed his last chance to do some severe damage at acceptable cost, but this is pretty much mirroring real life... [:D] he seems to be waiting for the decisive battle but he already faces pretty much bad odds IMO...

sunk... [8|] well, these E "No.x" are the new ones that are coming out of the shipyards in 44... there were some complaints about them on the forum already from ppl that have reached later war times (not a common happening anyway) and I can only agree... these vessels sure look historical correct, but their performance couldn´t be any more ahistorical... with an ASW value of 14 and a DC mount dropping 12 DCs at once they are truly uber ASW weapons... the explanation of having more smaller mounts dropping more patterns being better than one big mount is just off or is obviously coming from people that perhaps know what should go on in the game in theory but they obviously never saw how these E actually work in the game... must be the same of what actually happens in the game in regards to A2A and what the dev thinks what should happen in theory... the enemy probably doesn´t have more than halve a dozen of these E No.x at the moment but the IJN will flood all areas with them in a couple of months at the latest and this will be the time when the Allied sub offensive will come to a complete halt (if not earlier as sub losses are insane already)... while looking good on paper, these ships just didn´t have the ability to sink Allied subs at will in real life, the devs know that, but this doesn´t mean these E would be showing any different performance than high experienced British DD... and they do this with experience levels BELOW 50... well tested indeed... [8|]

like I´ve said earlier, AE was a step forward also in sub war and ASW but this doesn´t mean we are close to reality now (not talking about different USE of ASW assets, but totally different performance of each individual ship class)... and this is what usually gets me upset, in WITP ppl just accepted the weaknesses of a GAME, since AE was released, ppl are now constantly stating how realistic every aspect of the game is... and that is just silly... it´s a game with a great map, and an excellent OOB but it´s not a sim...

9 x PB4Y-1 Liberator bombing from 1000 feet
Naval Attack: 5 x 500 lb SAP Bomb

9 out of 48 PB4Y-1 manage to get to the target, the rest all had "failed to link up" or "fail due to range or weather" which is hardcoded for LBA strikes against ships... two freighters are sent to hell by the 9 bombers and both seem to have carried troops... guess the enemy will soon stop his reinforcement attempts of Mindanao... at the moment, there are some 80 enemy units on the island...

ok, you probably are going to ask why... why? because the 74 P-38J that are flown by the best pilots available to the USAAF are shot to pieces by 23 enemy fighters as they lose no less than 22 P-38... the P-38 are set to escort, well, they show up with the bombers but the game treats them as sweep (would that be an advantage then??? [8|]), probably the usual coordination silliness (yes, I don´t care about altitude as it just doesn´t matter as coordination is something I call "screwed by design")... what happens then? Do I even have to say the enemy had the never ending dive? The strike was picked up by radar, resulting in 16 min pre warning for the Japanese fighters which are set to 6000ft... the George unit shows up with "Time for all group planes to reach interception is 23 minutes"... and then I can watch the replay with the Japanese fighters diving and diving and diving and diving and diving until the point I thought, heck, this GAME is so silly, why not using a board game where all aircraft are the same and the higher dice wins... Lightning after Lightning was sent home burning and nearly two dozen crashed... the Lightnings were able to take down one Zero and damage two Georges... yeah, air to air routines are a masterpiece of computer programming for sure... the flying circus of Lightnings outnumbered the enemy 3.5:1, they had the better aircraft, they had a tactical advantage (height anyone?) and the had overall better pilots as my flying circus didn´t meet two enemy expert units... but hey, why should that mean the game could come up with at least a somewhat reasonable result? It can´t because it´s borked... unfortunately... means the enemy achieves a 22:1 kill rate here...

I´m not going as far as saying that this is a usual result, but one thing is for sure, with all the weaknesses of WITP air combat, you still get LESS totally unreasonable results like these totally silly loops in AE very often... in WITP you could get reasonable, realistic kill rates and this depended on numbers, ac type and pilot exp... when looking at your force and the enemy´s before an engagement, you usually could expect an outcome good or bad for you... in AE, I have no clue what reasonable factors you should look at because there just isn´t anything reasonable as soon as you leave the early war stages of 2 Zero daitais engaging one P-40 squadron it seems...

as a side note, I´m sure there are people around thinking this was a perfectly realistic example of the airwar in the Pacific... to me, with the given factors, it was a totally silly result...

makes it one sub sunk, two more in sinking condition and one damaged this turn for one tanker and three freighters (one small)... SS I-28 launches 6 torpedoes

a pity... APA Heywood grounded during the Biak invasion IIRC and had 82 major flotation damage and after undergoing emergency repairs was ordered to move to Auckland to be repaired... as the chances to make it were very low anyway, I didn´t order an escort to accompy the ship and the number of IJN subs in this area are very very low anyway... nevertheless, after making nearly 3/4 of her Voyage, Heywood stumbles over an enemy sub and is sunk...

amazingly enough, after our PB4Y-1 were flying in low numbers against enemy convoys around Mindanao, Rainer has not decided to back out with this one asap and this time the bombers fly in big numbers and also locate the enemy convoy as this works just well if the convoy is in a base hex... this brings up the question why bombers "fail to link up" if they try to attack a convoy outside of a base hex but are able to link up with their formation if they attack a convoy in a base hex... probably all just chrome and I shouldn´t care about any messages... freighters are just sitting ducks if they´re attacked by low level bombing bombers in acceptable weather... no troop losses, so I´m not sure if the convoy was able to unload or if it was carrying supplies... this strike again was an argument for the Japanese not to move within Manado´s heavy bombers´ range...

1/3 of the available USN patrol bombers attack another convoy in the area but this one is capped by a good dozen of useless Zekes but also 8 Georges which are quite feared by bomber crews... the bombers take losses but are able to score hits on two freighters sinking one for sure...

we´re using B-25D1 in level bomber mode now since they´re not forced to the debatable working 100ft attacks anymore and have upgraded all USAAF frontline medium bomber squadrons (except those in Burma/Vietnam)... those in Burma/Vietnam will keep on flying B-25C until the pool has dried up, currently some 140 in the pool after upgrading all those squadrons... the USAAF medium bomber pilots are all trained to 70 lownav with low to high grd too but the focus for these squadrons is anti shipping (even though most of them will never ever see an enemy ship)...

this was quite an interesting engagement because the Corsairs performed anormally well being on escort... needless to say, they had the dive which was more than surprising because they were outnumbered and were detected by radar...

I really love the funny air routines... while the bombers with their escorts flew from Manado in the morning, the squadrons that were ordered to sweep from Manado didn´t fly... these squadrons then flew in the afternoon, as usual one by one... yeah, that´s realism... any brown nosers around?

in total it was a clear victory for the Corsairs today, the first bomber waves took quite a toll though as they were coming from Boela at max range and we´ve lost quite a lot of them due to damage suffered over the target and the long range home... this will soon all become much better when Manado reaches level 9...

7 or 8:1 A2A for the Corsairs today, mostly during escort which is not normal for my fighters on escort, usually it´s better not to send escorts at all... that way we could wear down the enemy airforce over Mindanao at affordable losses...

the Aussies take Kendari... and we´ll soon jump onto the West Coast to take the empty Wattambone, currently a size 1 port 0 airfield but got a potential of being built up to level 9 which is what we´re going to do as this airfield can guard our Western flank, is hard to bombard from the Sea without ending up in range of all my bombers and this airfield also threatens the Soerabaja area and all shipping moving along Borneo´s West Coast...

the single Tojo was sent home damaged... these fighters are leaking from Canton where the enemy has massed something like 80-100 fighters it seems, reason for this is unknown... as I´m not allowed to do any stratetig bombing in China I wouldn´t keep any aircraft there as the Japanese... the hr was meant differently but how I worded now means I´m not even allowed to bomb Chinese territory that was held by the Japanese at the outbreak of the war... you could argue if Shanghai for example was Chinese or Japanese on 12/7/41 but I did just let down and there won´t be any strategic bombing in "China"... so IMO there´s no need to have an enemy airforce in China either... but in a couple of weeks we´re going to get the first B-29 squadrons and these can reach Korea from my Chinese bases... [:D] this will then lead to either a dispersion of Japanese fighter strenght or the destruction of all strategic targets at Places like Port Arthur and further down the coast...

RE: AE = Alpine Edition <-> Rainer79 vs. ranting castor troy

Post by castor troy »

Can someone enlighten me why I should upgrade my Avengers to the 1C model? It is slower, got less range and is less maneuverable (don´t know if this matters at all). The only thing the new model is better is the gun value as it got 2 front firing cal.50 but I seriously doubt these are needed at all... so far I haven´t upgraded any of the squadrons and got enough bombers in the pool but there will be the time when the pool is going to dry up. What was the real life reason to come up with a new model or is it just the same aircraft built by another company with two mor cal.50 and therefor overall worse flight characteristics?

Iirc, the pilots requested forward firing .50s for suppression/strafing purposes on attack runs.

In my pbemail, Viperpol keep a nice minefield at Bativa. Normally, this would not present a problem except that any sub with a home base in India will automatically route home through Bativa rather than transit the shorter but more dangerous route through the Singapore Straights. So if I am not paying attention my RTB subs will run over the "known" minefield at Bativa. So far I have lost four subs this way.[:@]

Mines have not been dominant in our game but a lot of fun. I have done in about half a dozen Japanese subs and another 20 ships and boats. He has done some damage as well but the Allies get more mines to work with.

TBM1C
(only from wikipedia though)
After hundreds of the original TBF-1 models were built, the TBF-1C began production. The allotment of space for specialized internal and wing-mounted fuel tanks doubled the Avenger's range. By 1943, Grumman began to slowly phase out production of the Avenger to produce F6F Hellcat fighters, and the Eastern Aircraft Division of General Motors took-over, with these aircraft being designated TBM. The Eastern Aircraft plant was located in North Tarrytown (re-named Sleepy Hollow in 1996), NY. Starting in mid-1944, the TBM-3 began production (with a more powerful powerplant and wing hardpoints for drop tanks and rockets). The dash-3 was the most numerous of the Avengers (with about 4,600 produced). However, most of the Avengers in service were dash-1s until near the end of the war (in 1945).

TBF-1CTBF-1 with provision for two 0.5 in (12.7 mm) wing guns and fuel capacity increased to 726 gal (2,748 l). (765 built)
TBM-1Cas TBF-1C. (2336 built)

From  http://www.uboat.net/allies/aircraft/avenger.htm
The designation TBF-1B applied to 402 aircraft built for the Royal Navy, which the British initially called Tarpon T.R. Mark I, but later called Avenger T.R. Mark I. British Avengers were sometimes modified to British specification by Blackburn Aircraft, including the installation British oxygen systems and gunsights. The TBF-1C deleted the nose-mounted machine gun and, instead, mounted one 50 caliber weapon in each wing. This variant was plumbed to carry up to 391 gallons of additional fuel in auxiliary fuel tanks. Grumman built 764, while GM built 2,332 of their virtually identical TBM-1C.

From http://www.acepilots.com/planes/avenger.html
After several hundred of the original TBF-1 were built, a few critical changes were made in the next variant, the TBF-1C. The pilot's single fuselage-mounted .30 caliber machine gun was replaced by two wing-mounted .50 caliber guns. The turret was also equipped with a .50 caliber weapon. And provisions for an internal fuel tank in the bomb bay plus two wing tanks more than doubled the Avenger's fuel capacity, from 335 to 726 gallons. The TBM-3 had these same features.

Looking at this, the TBF-1 should have DT, and the normal range of the TBM1-C should be greater.

I haven´t used Argonaut a lot but am doing an annoyance mission now and then, lately with some luck. I haven´t got a single sub in India, all my subs are either operating out of Adak or Darwin so mines at Batavia wouldn´t do my subs much harm. [:)] When I´ve lost Batavia in the game early on, there were still Dutch mines there and these took out three IJN subs passing through the hex though. [:D]

interesting info, thanks. I don´t see any reason to upgrade my bombers as the TBF is clearly the better choice in the game. On the other hand, Allied carrier strikes are hardcoded to max. 7 hexes anyway so at least the one hex shorter range wouldn´t matter. I just thought I would get a better bomber over the old one when a new model is available.

I'll set another possible observation.

Do strikes come from airfields in the same sequence, eg always from base 1, then base 2, then base 3.

Playing the Downfall scenario and getting the full Kamikaze blitz, I believe that on 2-3 consecutive days the same base flew the last mission, and with the previous 2-3000 sorties wearing out the CAP & AAA ammo got a clear run on my shipping. Now if you loaded up this airfield you could be very effective ( I sent in 5-600 B29 at 5000ft)

instead of having all strikes on the same base, I often try to spread them out over several bases. Funny as it is, you got more chances to see more squadron coming in at the same time if you use several bases, with different ranges and different directions to target than if you have them all at a fully built up and supported airfield complex. That´s how it is by design. Looks funny if you then see a "coordinated" strike with 7 or 8 of these strike lines going to a target. The more you deliberately try to screw up things, the better results you get in the end.

SS Parche is sunk by the newly arrived super E... no chance against these ASW 14 vessels... received some very much appreciated info about the ASW mortar having wrong ratings for these vessels but all I see are DC hits and these are actually sinking or heavily damaging my subs... have done some more tests and these also show the DC hitting the subs and due to being told I shouldn´t believe the messages I´ve modded one of these E classes in a test scenario (only removed the ASW mortar with the wrong data base values) after doing 25 test runs with the default E before... well, without the ASW mortar these E still sink subs like wild, they usually only need two or three attempts and a sub is sunk if you encounter a 4 ship ASW TF... and besides the sunk subs you end up with a hell a lot heavily damaged subs and this is done by their 12 DC mount... like I´ve said earlier, IMO the ships look historical correct but their performance is far from what the Japanese were able to do with them because otherwise the USN subs would all have been sunk in 44 just like the Kriegsmarine subs in the Atlantic... either it was the low experience of the crews in real life, the non existing or non working sonar or whatever but these ships weren´t ten times more effective than IJN DD or comparable to USN or British DD in ASW... it´s good for the game as it surely is a big morale boost for the Japanese player if he starts sinking subs everywhere as soon as he fields enough of these ASW 14 E in 44 but it is not historical correct... and I am not talking about how these vessels look like or how they are used, I´m talking about the performance of these ships while having 20-30 less experience than IJN DD... as the DD or other ships performance seems to be ok, you can´t just mod the depthcharges and give them lower accuracy or something like that because this then would make all other IJN ships near completely useless but having these E with a 12 DC mount (plus a single mount and an ASW mortar) really makes them killers comparable to Allied frontline DD...

the "old" E classes are a pain but they are by far not the killers the new ones are... and so far the most subs were sunk by "old" E... this one takes 20 sys 40 flt...
