The IJN lets a few subs loose around batu Palaat that seem to completely miss the mines and ASW. They sink a couple of xAKL but miss the ones carrying the AA unit to Malacca, luckily. I've just gotten a few big USN minelayers here and I'll send them up full to close the straits completely. I've got CD guns at both of the bases North of Singers, Bengkalis and Batu Palat. The Ashigara and two CL plus about 8-10 DD are up there somewhere near Georgetown or Alor Star. I'm hoping they are stuck for good now. [8D]

It's June 1. This seems like just about the time Tojos should appear. I'm wary, but as well prepared as I can be for now. The Hurris and P-38s are flying top CAP at Singers, and the rest are slightly under that, lots of P-40E and P-39D. The IJA is suddenly starting to bomb on Malaya, Sumatra and again in the PI. I think he's recovering from early setbacks in the air and although this is ominous it also provides opportunities to jump some of these runs. For now I'll wait and let AA do some work.

Every week or so I get a really good set of bombardments at Johore Baru. Today they're especially good. Nice to not only disrupt and disable to the troops here, but to get some destroyed, forcing even more use of supply to replace those devices.

I hit an xAK near Balikpapan, which tells me there is no CAP there. Got lucky, as I was going for a DD that was harassing my supply drops to Ambon.

The IJA is not having much luck bombing in the PI. Very little impact, although of course the AA guns fire. Still a decent amount of supply there, about 35k total. No fort building, replacements or any extras right now until I see whether I'll actually be able to get close enough to resupply in time.

Minor action on the 3rd. The Japanese continue to bomb bases in Malaya. They also hit a resupply of Bandjermasin, but after the supply got in and only two small 1 VP xAKL are lost.

On Malaya units begin to move toward Kuala Lumpur. I'll hold back on any bombing until Singapore reaches level 9 and I can base everything there.

Japanese DDs run in to Batu Palat and splatter a few motor launches and one AM. The also run into the CM Abdiel, the fastest ship on map right now. She was laying minefield, the beginning of an integrated and staunch defence of the straits here. I posted the whole interaction as it's pretty cool that the Allied radar only picked up Japanese forces at 6k yards, but Abdiel then high tailed it out and got away clean. [&o][:D]

The RN BBs pound Mersing.

In the day another strike hits Sabang, but no planes are lost on the ground. Good AA here but they don't shoot down any attackers either. Hmm.

Today, for the first time, I've tried a sub SST invasion. A portion of the 1st Marine Raider Battalion lands at Beaufort where a few Dutch units had moved through the jungle. Our troops outnumbered the defenders, but couldn't take the base. Now a waiting game, but at least it makes him reinforce and also, hopefully, worry about more of these little commando ops in the future. He should worry! [;)]

Troops continue to march toward Kuala Lumpur. No sign of any build-up there or troops moving from Kuantan or elsewhere. The KB is now in full view and something is up around the coasts of Malaya. A lot of TFs around. I'm wary of a move to evacuate troops from Mersing. About 40 subs will converge around the KB. Fingers crossed.

Lots of ASW on the 6th. About a dozen encounters with PBs on ASW duty around the KB. No luck getting to the big ladies, as they dodge back a bit. Now all of the subs are converged though, so it'll be easier to get them into the path from any direction that the KB wants to travel. There are also a couple of SCTFs at Kuantan. I don't see any big amphibs. Is he just tempting us to come out to fight? Seems like something more. A bombardment run?

Nothing attacked in China. No air raids. No bombardments. No DAs. I'm interested to see if this is a larger campaign, a probing mission, or just a feint to see my reaction and look for weak points.

Everything is calm in Soviet territory. All units are now back digging in. All bomber groups have moved back to train and reorganise. I'll have to decommission a few groups to fill out the rest since there are no replacements. I can eventually refill them with IL-2.

From the situation shown on the map I would be trying to land troops at Kuantan to march overland and retake the clear hexes on the west side of the peninsula, but I am not sure of his ability to control the air over his troops if he did that.

In Russia, the longer ranged bombers like DBM-3, DBT-3 and T-3 are in short supply but can be used judiciously to hit his bases further back and make him keep CAP over a wider area. He may have better aircraft than the Russians but he has to cover a lot more map.

I really like this little PC. I hadn't noticed before that she carried torpedoes!

The Yarra is a river with good wine country these days. I've visited a few times when back in Melbourne with my Aussie wife. She was amazed that the first time we went I saw a Platypus lolling about in the water. She'd never seen one before! [:)]

IIRC in most scenarios the Aussies get at least two of those. They are a little slow to use for a raider, but in the close quarters of the DEI there might be opportunities to use them to hit a transport convoy. I have been keeping mine in a surface combat TF for that purpose.

I'm going the other way around. I own most of the lower Malyan Peninsula on the Western side now. I'm marching on Kuala Lumpur. If I take that I can march toward Kuantan overland, and since I've got a lot of armor, it'll be hard to catch up if he doesn't have reinforcements already moving. Looks like about 5k troops there now, so I'd guess a regiment and a few base forces, engineers and support.

I'll post some better maps i a few minutes.

In Russia, the longer ranged bombers like DBM-3, DBT-3 and T-3 are in short supply but can be used judiciously to hit his bases further back and make him keep CAP over a wider area. He may have better aircraft than the Russians but he has to cover a lot more map.

He's done well using CAP judiciously over Manchuria. All of the industry is covered. I have hit a lot at night, but I'm wary of the growing power of the Japanese air forces and soon he'll use start sweeping and bombing fields. I can't defend them with fighters, as all MiGs are needed to defend Vlad's industry. So the very good AA will have to do it's best elsewhere.

It's been exciting from the beginning. Ups and dons for both sides, and very few lulls in the fighting. This is a moment where I've decided to consolidate and distribute troops in support of a flurry of moves coming soon. There is a lot happening in the background right now.

This is one of the strangest AARs I have seen! Very entertaining. [8D]

Yes this is one of the most interesting aspects; the early Soviet activation.

It may be attributable to a number of successful initiatives that you have played out; on the other hand you simply may have outplayed your opponent by being unpredictable, resourceful, clever.

Being a relative newbie I have never experienced and read very few AARs about the Soviet activation.

Your insights here are actually 'net new' and very fascinating.

As an ammeter historian I imagined "hoards of Commisar lead Brothers in Arms simply rolling across Manchuria, then Korea, then China" in 1942 / 43.

My only frame of reference is Uncle Joe in late 45.

However it appears that the Soviets in 1942 must also demonstrate restraint.

They must have superiority in Armor - even at this early date - but it must be much less concentrated than I imagine. I guess the good stuff is still counter-attacking 20 miles out of Moscow and at Stalin Grad.

They must have superiority in Artillery but as above.

I figured the air war was a draw until the best Migs and Yaks come along.. but again without a frame of reference its hard to understand.

Going to have to play the Japanese side (as I intend / plan) and play around with early Soviet activation and experiment.

A People that values its privileges above it's principles will soon loose both. Dwight D Eisenhower.
