RE: it goes on...
RED ALERT!
we have spotted three TFs moving towards Port Moresby... as they are three hexes off the base this can´t be a bombardment or surface combat TF and following my nav search reports, this is an INVASION heading to Port Moresby. I can´t believe that Miller is really pulling that one off. We haven´t spotted a single carrier (how many operational carriers does he even has?) and he attacks a base that can be attacked from several of my bases. Lae and Goodenough Island were knocked out by the 4E nuclear bombers but there are several other bases we can launch Betty strikes on the incoming invasion. We have also KB nearby (Truk) and have set it to move full speed towards Buna to strike from the Eastern side of PM against the attacker.
I can´t believe he´s really doing this... [X(] I have no clue how this will really turn out but the chances to see a massacre on his ships are pretty high... that my nav search once again failed to alert me earlier is a pain, otherwise KB would be in strike range tomorrow already to launch against the fully loaden transports...

nice counterfire by my two small IJN base forces. Once again I think it´s the joke of the year that I lose two dozen DDs around Northern Australia to mines while going in with surface combat or bombardment TFs and once again the Allied seem to be immune to my mines. At the end of the turn there were still 3900!!!!! mines at Port Moresby but all we get is one f*cking hit on a DD... this just sucks... [:@] looking at the casualties, there must be coming a lot of troops ashore, PM will be Allied soon I guess...

I have to say that I was really disappointed by the performance of my IJN torpedo bombers today. Not much hit for all those bombers that launched. In total we got perhaps 40% of the bombers into the air, regardless of being fully supplied and in range of air HQs. Nav strikes are a hard task...
Luck wasn´t on our side today as Buna was clouded in, my bombers staid on the ground while Allied bombers came in to bomb and destroy them. And one thing made Miller really lucky today: KB ended up ONE hex too far away to launch a strike. One hex closer and KB could have launched 250 bombers twice this day against a fully loaden invasion TF... a pity...

nice counterfire by my two small IJN base forces.

One hex closer and KB could have launched 250 bombers twice this day against a fully loaden invasion TF... a pity...

RE: it goes on...
This is what the enemy throws at Port Moresby. IIRC then those US divisions are the ones that were forced to retreat South of Darwin, so they are all understrenght, only the Australian division should be at full strenght. But it doesn´t matter, the defense of PM is far to weak to oppose the attack. Not even our forts are built up, only at 1. I planned to slightly reinforce PM within the next weeks and build up the forts but never intended to really defend it with force. At least not that much force that I would keep Miller from attacking as I do want to see him to constantly do offensives like this one here. As long as the enemy doesn´t have enough carriers to support his invasions, all of them will be bloody. And I can asure you, the Allied Navies will suffer again...

we did not have the luck to see KB moving one hex further yesterday but today we were in perfect strike range (3 hexes) and launched a full strike in the morning... the enemy TF is hit hard, nearly two dozen ships should be sunk, including two CLAA and one CL... at this point it becomes more and more strange to me to see this attack going in. Pretty much reminds me of Miller´s attack on Timor when his carriers turned around and I slaughtered his APs. He told me afterwards he would never do that again. Well, it seems he´s doing the same thing big style again now...

KB´s afternoon strike. While we launched 258 bombers in the morning (with only half a dozen being damaged), we "only" launch 186 in the afternoon and at least half of them tries to attack already sunk ships (mainly targetting the two CLAAs and the CL), making this strike only half effective... [8|] nav search reports at least 80 ships in this TF... but more ships are about to sink... we don´t hit a lot of troop loaden APs it seems or most of the enemy troops have already unloaded...

same here... if you really know the weaknesses in the code of this game than you can really exploit it and I´m not saying that this is an exploit of Miller. Not at all. But if you have a huge TF with only a couple of "high value" ships in it then those surely get sunk but it will also result in a high percentage of enemy bombers not attacking the rest of the TF because they try to attack a sunk ship instead of attacking a fat AP just sitting 50 yards away in a TF of 100 ships... I guess if this "feature" wouldn´t exist, some 150 more bombers would have attacked ships today instead of trying to engage a sunken one...
guess at this point we have decimated the enemy TF by something like three dozen ships sunk and some more being damaged, so this shouldn´t be the time to complain. Our losses in aircraft are more than light and if I would be the Allied, I wouldn´t cheer about those losses. But Miller must have expected them as he already told me he expects to lose a lot of ships when KB would show up. I would never do an attack like this. He did only one day of bombings with his heavy bombers against my bases and none of those bases that were hit launched a strike anyway (and this not because of the Allied attacks). It really remembers me of the Allied drive on Timor, the only difference is the fact that Miller now has Corsairs... I don´t have Tonies yet but hopefully soon, knowing that they are not as good as the Corsair of course, but surely a milestone compared to the "fly straight ahead Tojo".
We have still nearly a dozen Allied divisions bottled up at Wyndham and I have still not given up the intention to kill them off. And this is what should concern Miller. Losing those 3000 assault points at Wyndham will be a major disaster for the Western Allied as they don´t have that many divs at the moment and it will free up 10.000!! of Japanese assault points in this region. So in fact, I don´t understand this attack on Port Moresby at all at this stage. It looks dangerous for us at the moment (not nearly as dangerous as the attack on Timor though) but we have the chance to do the same thing like at Timor, cut them off and make the Allied pay.
For me, this operation is a good example of "too early, too far again"...

I was in the process or regrouping my ground troops in this area and therefore I don´t have a couple of nav guard units or a bgd on hand to be flown in with Tabbies from Rabaul. This and the fact that PM´s forts weren´t built up makes the Allied invasion possible. I won´t call it a success because taking the base but losing over 50 ships doing this (if we launch strikes tomorrow) isn´t a success IMO. It´s a success for us as our goals always have been to sink ships. Doing this with low losses to our own forces if possible. The only thing that hurts the Allied at some point are losing ships. And while they get a hell a lot of ships, I´ve made the experience that they do feel it when they lose too many of them. Those dozens of ships being lost in this invasion won´t hurt in the long run but it´s only this one invasion. The same already happened at Timor when we sunk two dozen APs. Now we probably get another four dozen. Sure you can use AKs to ferry around your troops but you will soon find out that you need A LOT of AKs to ferry troops and don´t forget that Nikmod has greatly reduced cargo capacity of all ships. The step from a bad outcome to a disaster when it comes down to ship losses around PM is dependend only on two things: a) how many more days will the Allied TF hang around and b) will the weather prevent any of KB´s strikes. There´s also the possibility of an Allied 4E bomber strike on KB but I´ll take that risk. Should have a 200 Zero Cap and hopefully the 4Es won´t show up in the hundreds and their morale should hopefully be low. And not to forget the fact that he has to even spot KB with search aircraft from his bases around Cairns, which is something like a dozen hexes away...

we did not have the luck to see KB moving one hex further yesterday but today we were in perfect strike range (3 hexes) and launched a full strike in the morning... the enemy TF is hit hard, nearly two dozen ships should be sunk, including two CLAA and one CL... at this point it becomes more and more strange to me to see this attack going in.

RE: it goes on...
That would be a nice rate of bombers available/launching. Miller told me that just before the invasion went in that he "only" expects my Betties to show up and KB joining later (one day later...). And I told him that my Betties alone nearly were enough to defeat his carriers off Darwin but as it turns out now, they can´t do much it seems. Without KB it would have been quite nice days for the Allied.

ground attacks at extended range... must mean the enemy ground troops will attack today... I would have set all my 4E bombers on nav attack to engage KB though... with over 300 long range bombers that can´t be shot down by Cap or flak I would have kept them on nav attack to get a chance to hit the fragile Japanese carriers. Miller stated in his email that there´s a huge discrepancy in Allied and Japanese losses in warships due to the fact that the Allied don´t have long range torpedo bombers like the Japanese Betty and Nell and therefor those losses are so onesided because as long as I stay further than 5 hexes away from his bases nothing could harm KB. Well, I´m of total different oppinion on that case. Speaking from my experience as an Allied player (and from Japanese experience too of course), the Allied 4E (and to a high extend the Ventura in Nikmod too) are perfect ship killers and I usually achieve BETTER results with B-24 than with Betties against everything except BBs as I have yet to see a 4E dropping a bomb that can penetrate the deck armor of Japanese BBs.
Same goes for his Mitchells and Wellingtons, if you have ships in their range then they are in high danger. Of course much depends on the crews experience but the same goes for the Betty crews. Low experience, few hits, high experience, many hits. And high experience also means BIG bombs and big Allied bombs are far more dangerous to Japanese ships than Japanese torpedoes are to Allied ships. Speaking with an experience of thousands of PBEM turns in stock, Nikmod and BigB I can surely say that the Allied equipment of mid 42 on is surely no reason not to sink Japanese ships. The equipment works just fine and you will get more and more and more of that fine equipment. You don´t need no stinking long range torpedo bomber (that can´t be used for anything else) as the Allied, you have heavy bombers that drop 4.000 lb of laser guided bombs as soon as they have decent experience...

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!
there was no doubt that the defenders would have had a chance. The US divisions looked pretty worn out, only the Australian division seems to still be in a good shape. 1061 assault points with 5 Allied divisions and support troops isn´t that much anyway...
well, Port Moresby is Allied again. So what about the situation now? The enemy has landed five divs, some art units, an AA unit and an Australian construction unit and NO base forces. [X(] Was that an oversight? How can you do that invasion without bringing base forces immediately? The airfield is level 3 and it will take some time to further build it up. To further build it up he will need seabees (if he wants to do it fast) and he will need supply. Supply is one major question again and when looking at what we´ve hit from day one of the invasion on and how many AKs there were in total and how many were lost, I seriously doubt that Miller has more than 20.000 supplies on the beach. And 20.000 supplies isn´t that much. Enough to go on for some time, but not enough to do serious base building, supplying your troops and mount a bomber offensive out of the place. Which means that Miller has to do two things: a) bring in more supplies (can only be done by ship - say hello to Ms. Betty [;)]) and b) move in more troops (could also be done by airtransport).
Of course he now has made a first step into a region where he can use his Corsairs and medium bombers to hurt me. But to seriously hurt me he probably has to build this place up to max size and I have to let him hurt me, which means staying within Corsair range. It´s a comparable situation like it was on Timor (just not as dangerous in a strategic view), the enemy came in unexpected and just a couple of weeks too early, he took the place and he now holds position at a place that is surrounded by numerous Japanese bases that have been built up. Those bases can "only" be reached by heavy bombers from Australia or bombers out of PM itself but I guess PM has to concentrate to protect itself rather than launch an offensive. And to exploit the situation, the enemy just has to send task forces to the base, just like it had to be done on Timor. My reaction on Timor lead to my offensive against Northern Australia that was a more or less complete success (except the destruction of all the Allied divisions at Wyndham - but I´m still working on that one). My reaction against Port Moresby can´t be that I invade the area around Townsville because I can´t go in against 600 Allied bombers with my Cap of 200 KB Zeros and I don´t have the shipping and ground units anyway. Not that I would do that if I would have the ships and the ground troops...
But one thing I can asure you, I already have a plan... [;)] stay tuned...

I can´t believe it! CA Suffolk is still afloat? WTH? DinahIIIs were flying daily recon to Ceylon and they came back with the info that there are nearly a dozen ships disbanded at Colombo (level 6 port), including at least one CL (which obviously is Danae that also was spotted during our Betty attacks on CA Suffolk). So I´ve moved in three Helen sentais and ordered them to attack with a Zero Daitai as escort. I have to say that I´m totally disappointed by the escort as the enemy Cap immediately attacked the bombers, downing 6 of them easily [:(] as the Beaufighter has an awful armament...
I know of the base force at Colombo that is bristling with AA guns, nevertheless I´ve ordered the attack to go in at 11.000 ft as you don´t hit anything if you go in higher and still suffer from the Allied uber flak that wrecks your bomber force in no time. Needless to say that I was totally shocked when I saw the first 250kg AP bomb going through Suffolks deck armor as I was 99,9% sure it would have sunk after taking FIVE torps from my Betties. Looks like there was a lot of FOW involved in this attack. Even four torps should have sunk the CA for sure. Superior Allied damage control and the fact that the ship was disbanded into the level 6 port obviously also helped a lot. Don´t know how Suffolks damage looks like now, after taking nearly a dozen bombs. One or two bombs weren´t able to penetrate the belt armor. Also CL Danae is hit hard, again a couple of belt hits that didn´t penetrate, but also here 7 or 8 250kg AP bombs should do a hell a lot of damage to the CL. Hopefully CL Suffolk is sunk now...
15 Helens lost, including a dozen high experienced crews, but I think the damage done was worth it... if we attack again, then not without another daitai of Zeros as escorts...

god damn! I was thinking about ordering this attack for more than just a minute but as the enemy has not landed ANY air support squads I´ve thought he also wouldn´t fly in aircraft as this is something I wouldn´t do... well, Miller did and I won´t blame him for doing this. So ordering this attack was a mistake as we lose two dozen KB aircraft and their precious, high experienced pilots. The high experienced Zeros (the best I can field) hardly traded one of their own for one of the enemy fighters and this showed me that medium experienced Allied pilots in Corsairs and Lightnings are too much of a threat already to take them on if not absolutely necessary. And this airfield attack surely was no MUST at all as I can´t close the airfield forever anyway. All in all I´m absolutely satisfied with the damage done to the enemy invasion of Port Moresby, even with the two dozen aircraft lost today, we only lost three dozen in total for sinking something like 70 ships, including two British CLAA, a US CL and several DDs. Especially the AP losses will be something Miller will feel the next months I guess...

bit airfield strike from Rabaul. As this is the follow on strike to KB´s strike, as usual the Cap has no chance at all. While the 90 exp Zero escorts from KB can hardly hold their own, achieving a 1:1 kill rate, the 80 exp Zero escorts (that are coming in from 10 hexes range and are fatigued from previous attacks) take down the enemy fighters in a 10:1 kill rate...
but what the hell should I think about this hit rate of 200 Betties. That´s exactly why I will never understand Allied players that think the Betty is so uber. Yes you can use it to sink all kind of ships (if you don´t run into Cap or heavy flak). But is there anything else you can use it? Yes, port attacks if there are ships to hit... but that´s it... 200+ high experienced IJNAF bombers achieve 28 hits on the runway. 200 4E bombers would achieve 250 runway hits. Funny thing is, those 4Es carry "only" 3 times as many bombs on that range as the Betties do but achieve nearly 8-10 times more hits on average.

Hi Castor,
I have to say this is one of the most impressive demolition of the Allies I've seen since Honda's
He's given you a fantastic opportunity to run him out of his best airframes at PM. No base force means no radar (and they can only be shipped rather than flown in). No radar means no DL on incoming aircraft. Recon, then sweep to clear the skies, then send in the bombers (with some escorts). You may not get great sweep results, but the escots will massacre what's left. I'm not saying you won't get bounced at all, but it will resemble 'dead cat' rather than Indian rubber ball.

Hi
Thanks, it´s fun but the curtain is soon falling and I will be getting in trouble I guess. It´s mid 43 after all.
Two more days into the war (cr following soon) and Miller moved in two more units (by airtransport as I haven´t spotted any shipping) according to my recon. Those units are pretty surely air support units, Miller can´t ignore not having them at PM. [;)] Don´t know if he really forgot about them while loading his invasion TF or if it was planned to move them in with Dakotas.
In the meantime we´ve spotted something like 80+ enemy fighters on Cap over PM. This means it would not just become a massacre for the Allied, it would also become one for the Japanese (I don´t even want to think about what flak will do to my bombers). The Allied get something like 150 top notch fighters per month (Corsair, Thunderbolt and Lightning, not even counting Spits...) and while there probably won´t be that many P-38s around, he surely has hundreds of Corsairs and also something like 150 Thunderbolts already. So really fighting them down is something I don´t want to do at the moment. In a month (at the latest, if r&r isn´t succesfull) we will produce roughly 600 Tonies a month and I don´t want to send in hundreds of high experienced Tojos when I can use those pilots in Tonies. The Tony "should" be a vast improvement over the Tojo. More maneuverable (biggest weakness of the "only fly straight ahead Tojo"), armor rating of 2 (Tojo 0) and the first single seat fighter for the Japanese with a gun value of 10. Hopefully this will mean I can take down a couple of Allied bombers more. At the moment I prefer to fight a defensive fight over my bases, with a level 3 airfield at PM, Miller will rather have to concentrate to defend the place than to mount an offensive out of it. With the Tony coming online I hope to be in a better position.

How is it possibly that the Tony arrives in 43 and AFTER the Tojo?
Without any doubt: I am the spawn of evil - and the Bavarian Beer Monster (BBM)!

because that´s Nikmod and the version that arrives is the cannon armed version and that was (according to Nikademus) not available until mid 43. It´s agreed within the forum that the stock arrival dates of both the Tojo and the Tony seem to be wrong.

I really consider it a joke that a CD unit (more than a dozen 4,7 inch DP guns), a big base force (three dozen AA guns of all calibres) and two IJN base forces (a dozen AA guns each) can´t do any damage. This is a low level attack and while I don´t think I should take out the whole bomber formation, they should at least be forced to attack higher. All what Nikmod has been about seems not to be true in this version anymore. Still true for Allied flak (it´s not just that I have to attack higher, I can´t attack Allied bases at all [8|]) but Japanese flak is inferior to stock flak as the enemy aircraft are just far too durable.

This is a low level attack and while I don´t think I should take out the whole bomber formation, they should at least be forced to attack higher. All what Nikmod has been about seems not to be true in this version anymore. Still true for Allied flak (it´s not just that I have to attack higher, I can´t attack Allied bases at all [8|]) but Japanese flak is inferior to stock flak as the enemy aircraft are just far too durable.

we suffer from the usual things, we just don´t get our fighters airborne. 200 Tojos set to 90% Cap, 65 in the air to meet the bombers. Senseless to try to defend your bases (even against unescorted strikes) until we will get land based radar... Thank god they were low on morale. We take a dozen bombers down in total, most turned back. 6 bombers dropped their load, destroying two Tojos on the ground. We were lucky anyway as most ot the Allied strike failed to locate the target... Otherwise we would have lost 100 Tojos today for downing 20 bombers...

62 fighters in the air last time, today 77. Absolutely funny to get 1/3 of your fighters into the air. Most of the bombers turned back again, a hell a lot has been damaged, the losses within the bombers is just depressing again. The Allied just does´t have to think about sending in heavy bombers into enemy fighter defenses as the fighters are no threat anyway... really wonder if the Tony will make that much difference. I´m absolutely sure that lots of radar and the Frank will make a difference. Lol, this will be in 12 months... [;)]
