If we can get 1:1 kill rates with our Lightnings on sweeps then that´s many times the best we can get out of them. This with them being flying circusses. Guess we have to shift over the work to Corsairs and P-47.

wow, we get three full squadrons in one sweep... so far so good... what wasn´t good for us was the fact that we didn´t have the dive for a single second... ok, nothing new since radar has been working, nevertheless hard to understand... no dive, means for every shot that scores on the Japanese, they score three times on our aircraft, resulting in two dozen P-47 being damaged, lots of them crashing on the way home... if the Allied ac don´t get the dive, the Japanese fighters are always superior to ours... thank god they only carry peashooters and even the George seems to have problem to down a Thud...

the Japanese bombers obviously weren´t able to get to the target, even though it´s near their own base... the plan wasn´t to directly attack Davao with our airforce today but to have a naval bombardment during the night first... this time it was my fault as I´ve screwed up the settings, the TF was set to "patrol do not retire" which of course means the bombardment is going to happen AFTER all the airstrikes during the day... it also means the TF was in high danger of being sunk...

this single squadron is all that flew today and it wasn´t able to fly as a whole, just as we are used to... the P-47 did very well though...

the current intel screen. Aircraft losses roughly being 1.5:1 in favour of the Allied, mostly due to as many op losses as the Japanese but these are coming from nearly twice as many sorties, while most sorties are training flights of numerous training squadrons on the map (guess nearly halve of my airforce is commited to training). The enemy long overtook us in shipping losses, both in the number of ships and in points. While I´m not happy with what these super E achieved in the last weeks (it get´s far worse as the game is three weeks ahead of the AAR) I have to admit that the subs have been highly succesful against the IJN up to 44 as most enemy ships lost were victims of our subs. Needless to say that our subs account for two IJN fleet carriers sunk (that were undamaged) while only one was sunk by my carriers. Ground losses still look very bad, even though we´ve destroyed a couple of hundred thousand enemy troops already. Guess the enemy has lost equally or more troops in total already but Allied troops are worth more in victory points.

we´ve ordered attacks on Davao again as we want to take out damaged aircraft on the ground... we start of with Lightning sweeps that look as silly as most times as they neither fly together nor as whole squadrons... if someone thinks it´s ok that squadrons fly alone most of the time, well, then be it. But if he thinks squadrons should lose formation all the time and shouldn´t be able to arrive as a squadron most of the time too, then I really pity him... no dive means the P-38 have a very bad day again...

same here, we end up with lots of damaged Lightnings... attacking a base with radar is too costly for us, no matter at which alt we´re coming in and no matter how many fighters we send, as these usually show up in bits and pieces anyway so your 3:1 numerical superiority soon ends up being a 1:2 numerical disadvantage...

Also interesting this turn, KB was spotted again. Amazingly not near Mindanao or the Philipines but heading to Soerabaja. This is surprising as there can´t be any doubt that the Allied are directly aiming at Mindanao or Eastern Borneo now so having KB at the wrong side of Borneo is placing it in quite a bad position IMO. Wattambone isn´t a level 9 airfield yet (currently 8) but that´s easily big enough to cover our left flank so I highly doubt that KB will sprint East through the strait between Southern Borneo and Celebes. Needless to say that if KB would do that and would end up North or North East of Wattambone it would also end up in range of Manado´s level 9 airfield with a couple of hundred bombers and fighters waiting to be sent out. A pity we´re still in preparation of our invasion of Mindanao, it would have been cool to have my invasion going in in the next two days. The carrier fleet is undergoing repairs at Darwin as lots of ships accumulated quite some sys and engine damage, this will still take around one and a halve weeks. To be honest, I´m not sure what Rainer is up to with KB in this area but it would suit me well if the enemy carriers would stay there.

Great news today, we´ve received the first operational B-29 squadron. Within the next couple of weeks we are going to receive around a hundred B-29 in squadrons of 7 bombers each. These squadrons will be downgraded to Havocs and used as training squadrons, relieving some 12 and 16 aircraft squadrons for frontline duty. These small squadron don´t seem to be really suitable for the frontline due to the stacking limits. Place 56 of these bombers at a level 8!! airfield and without an air HQ you´ve reached the admin stacking already so every fighter squadron to protect the base would result in overstacking already. Guess the B-29 won´t be employed within the next two months and then we are probably stationing them in China as this is the only area from where we can reach vital areas of the enemy. The only level 9 airfield in China is Chungking though, Sian is being built up but is only a level 5 yet. From Chungking we can reach Western Korea for example but from Sian we could reach this area with full bomb load. I´m going to upgrade the best bomber squadrons to use the B-29 as they are going to be real precious, 18 per month are coming out of the factories starting in April. As soon as we´re going to fly the first attacks, I´m sure the enemy will have to take back a couple of hundred fighters to protect his industry in Korea and Western Japan or he has to accept it being whiped out completely. It sure will be interesting. [:D]

first time it really paid off for me to use a sub minelayer... considering the low supply of mines for Argonaut, we can do one mission every six WEEKS... same with air dropped mines, use them a couple of times and you run out of the 150 Mk13 per month in no time, a real minelaying operation isn´t possible IMO but this can be changed in the editor easily if wished for a new PBEM... heavy fires probably means that both tankers were full of fuel when hitting the mines so they could be in serious trouble now...

while it looks like as if the P-47 have done quite well, they haven´t as they lacked the dive due to the enemy having radar which makes the strato sweep (or any other alt setting) pretty much senseless as the enemy still gets the dive due to having radar... we had so many P-47 damaged that we lose 7 of them in the end, achieving a 1.5:1 kill rate at best... while having a numerical superiority as usual, it just doesn´t matter if you don´t get your fighters over the target at the same time... thought numerical superiority would have been one of the big advantages you could have in real life... well, real life...

Rainer kept minesweepers at Palembang so Argonaut´s minefield was a one shot weapon that scored yesterday... when thinking a bit more about it I wonder if the total number of available mines aren´t by far too low because when thinking about the mine laying campaign later in the war, the mines dropped by aircraft were dropped in big numbers and the enemy didn´t get a nice combat report every time some bombers laid mines somewhere and the Japanese had severe problem actually clearing the mines, this if they actually found them... in the game you can use one mine layer sub every 6th week and if you use a hundred bombers three or four times you end up dropping halve a year´s Mk13 pool for no result probably because the enemy gets a nice combat report and if there aren´t convoys going in the same day, all the mines are cleared easily by some mine sweepers... works the same for both sides of course, no idea how many mines the Japanese got, probably even fewer if you have to compare it to the Allied and their mine use in real life...

[8|] two of them are enough to whipe out a whole sub fleet in an area of 10x10 hexes... same as my tests without the ASW mortar showed, the sub was again hit and sunk by several Type 2 depth charges of those 12 DC patterns... these ships are absolutely overpowered, achieving the same performance as Allied DDs, while having crappy crew experience... there is something seriously wrong, these ships didn´t whipe out the US submarine fleet in 44, no problem for them in the game... the PBEM is ahead another two and a halve weeks, enemy super E have sunk serval subs in the weeks to come... within the next three months we will have to withdraw all subs from areas outside our LBA... [8|]

these were other squadrons coming with the P-47 from another base... besides that all the bomber strikes looked totally silly and besides that the closest base got it´s sweep (the one above) coming in after the bombers yet again I really wonder if I´m the only one that strike such things as these Lightnings doing 10 escort missions a day... [8|] there aren´t that many Lightnings at my base(s), they aren´t set on LRCAP (and if they would, they wouldn´t get halve of the aircraft you see over the target), they are all set on escort with the target assigned (to avoid them not flying at all or flying somewhere else because the routine is so smart)... with the result of them flying escort with every piece meal strike which they clearly shouldn´t... and like I´ve said before a couple of times already, this is not a display glitch because these fighters are actually fighting if the enemy is showing up... same goes for the 17 Corsairs in each of the last strikes, this is the same squadron all the time because I didn´t have that many Corsairs ordered to sweep/escort (or even in range of) Malaybatay... [8|]

as I´m not seen as more than an annoyance I won´t bring this up outside of the AAR, perhaps I´m posting a smiley with the date I´ve brought it up here when it finally is brought up on the mainforum as an accepted bug... this is nice to read then when I´m told I wouldn´t know what is going on in the game and I´m still in the process of learning... as it was the same with pre Cap flak, search archs, land based radar, etc... heck, I must be one stupid bastard...

KB is now sitting at Brunei! [X(] Heck, three days ago the enemy was still at Soerabaja now the carriers are parking at Brunei, quite a fast move considering that the enemy is probably moving around with his CVE following his fleet carriers... wonder what he´s up to, I would have preferred to see them being stationed at Java, whatever reason Rainer had to send them there...

before we actually saw the first raid going in we had around TWO DOZEN messages, all the same being "bombers failed to locate target due to range or weather"... KB being at Brunei I have adjusted our bombers ranges but I´ve forgotten about the majority which are my B-24 that were still set to 16 hexes nav attack... what followed wasn´t that nice to see as it meant the losses would all be for nothing... the B-24 once again proved to be the best weapon to clear the sky of enemy Cap (not saying taking them down but greatly reducing the Cap) but as there wouldn´t be any follow on strikes it would be absolutely senseless as the bombers won´t hit anything from 10000ft as they are neither nav bomb trained nor is it helpful when each of the bombers get´s damaged three times during the air combat pre bombing... no less than 20 enemy units are identified which probably means 20 enemy carriers... the first four units seem to be stationed on CVE (as these mostly don´t have own airgroups) while two of them seem to come from CVL Chitose and Chiyoda IIRC... what about that Hikotai? Aren´t Hikotais units that are bigger than Sentais? I thought it would be Chutai - Daitai - Sentai, etc? But how would a unit being bigger than a Sentai fit on a CVE? Guess I´m screwing something up here, would Chutai and Daitai only be IJNAF?

Anyway, having 400+ Zekes on Cap clearly only aimed at exactly what happened today, drawing an LBA strike that can be butchered without having to fear any follow on strike that could actually pose a threat... nice move and silly me that forgot about the range setting of my B-24... lesson learnt hopefully...

wow, "all" bombers coming in in one strike in the afternoon, at least those that took off, the rest had "bombers failed to find target due to range or weather"... in the end it was quite a massacre within the bombers (as it should be IMO), a senseless one as I had no follow on strikes so sacrificing the bombers for a sweep without a follow on strike because the other bombers are out of range is pretty much pointless... one and a halve dozen crews paid with their lives, total losses were no less than 49 bombers... sounds a lot but losing this number of Lightnings would be far more severe as it´s only 3 weeks of bomber replacements and 2/3 of the crews survived, which wouldn´t be true when 49 Lightnings would be shot down... not that I would be happy with these losses of course...

Rainer kept minesweepers at Palembang so Argonaut´s minefield was a one shot weapon that scored yesterday... when thinking a bit more about it I wonder if the total number of available mines aren´t by far too low because when thinking about the mine laying campaign later in the war, the mines dropped by aircraft were dropped in big numbers and the enemy didn´t get a nice combat report every time some bombers laid mines somewhere and the Japanese had severe problem actually clearing the mines, this if they actually found them... in the game you can use one mine layer sub every 6th week and if you use a hundred bombers three or four times you end up dropping halve a year´s Mk13 pool for no result probably because the enemy gets a nice combat report and if there aren´t convoys going in the same day, all the mines are cleared easily by some mine sweepers... works the same for both sides of course, no idea how many mines the Japanese got, probably even fewer if you have to compare it to the Allied and their mine use in real life...

The number of mines is far too low compared to rl. However, I still have bad memories concerning the pita that mines were in UV and early WitP. I hated that part of the game.

and the super E score again... sub confirmed sunk... [8|] two of them are enough to whipe out a whole sub fleet in an area of 10x10 hexes... same as my tests without the ASW mortar showed, the sub was again hit and sunk by several Type 2 depth charges of those 12 DC patterns... these ships are absolutely overpowered, achieving the same performance as Allied DDs, while having crappy crew experience... there is something seriously wrong, these ships didn´t whipe out the US submarine fleet in 44, no problem for them in the game... the PBEM is ahead another two and a halve weeks, enemy super E have sunk serval subs in the weeks to come... within the next three months we will have to withdraw all subs from areas outside our LBA... The cap reduction from splintered lba nav strikes probably has him terrified to fight a cv battle anywhere near your bases. He'll probably have to wait until you invade somewhere out of lba range. He might be waiting a long time. [;)]

Rainer kept minesweepers at Palembang so Argonaut´s minefield was a one shot weapon that scored yesterday... when thinking a bit more about it I wonder if the total number of available mines aren´t by far too low because when thinking about the mine laying campaign later in the war, the mines dropped by aircraft were dropped in big numbers and the enemy didn´t get a nice combat report every time some bombers laid mines somewhere and the Japanese had severe problem actually clearing the mines, this if they actually found them... in the game you can use one mine layer sub every 6th week and if you use a hundred bombers three or four times you end up dropping halve a year´s Mk13 pool for no result probably because the enemy gets a nice combat report and if there aren´t convoys going in the same day, all the mines are cleared easily by some mine sweepers... works the same for both sides of course, no idea how many mines the Japanese got, probably even fewer if you have to compare it to the Allied and their mine use in real life...

The number of mines is far too low compared to rl. However, I still have bad memories concerning the pita that mines were in UV and early WitP. I hated that part of the game.

and the super E score again... sub confirmed sunk... [8|] two of them are enough to whipe out a whole sub fleet in an area of 10x10 hexes... same as my tests without the ASW mortar showed, the sub was again hit and sunk by several Type 2 depth charges of those 12 DC patterns... these ships are absolutely overpowered, achieving the same performance as Allied DDs, while having crappy crew experience... there is something seriously wrong, these ships didn´t whipe out the US submarine fleet in 44, no problem for them in the game... the PBEM is ahead another two and a halve weeks, enemy super E have sunk serval subs in the weeks to come... within the next three months we will have to withdraw all subs from areas outside our LBA... [8|]

There are not many mines in the game but I think that just was a design decision. There have to be some aspect of gameplay even in a good historical simulation and I suspect they thought that most players would have gotten fed up with thousands of mines everywhere. Accepting that, they are fun to play with. Not a war winner but I have gotten about 20 ships with mines and my opponent has done fairly well also. You can forget about massive air drops of mines to close Japanese ports as even the crappiest minesweeper will clear them out with no problem. However, I find air mining to be very useful when I want to close an enemy base that is nearer to the frontal line. It requires air superiorty so that he can't run mine sweepers around but they are useful to hinder the flow of supplies from fast TF. In addition my sub placed mines have done pretty well. I just try to be sneaky about placing them. Observe places where TF naturally cut over some land point or atol and drop some mines there when you suspect the fleet might be coming or some large cargo TF. It is a one hit wonder as they will clear the minefield once it is discovered but you can cause some delays while they bring up a sweeper and occasionally nail a big ship.

Mines won't be a pull off any major coups but can be fun if you are creative. I think they are OK as-is. I would rather they fix sub warfare. They can leave the mines alone.

Definitely a design decision. I'm sure you remember the pre-AE days of not just 5k+ mines/base but also running dm/mls until their system damage was in the red. I hated that. Even though the production numbers of mines in AE isn't remotely historical, I agree that they're actually fun to play with now.

EuBanana has an aar that increases the production of mines x10. Going to reread it to see if it makes a difference in AE.

I wish. Unfortunately the original game promptly stalled and the recreated one has the normal number of mines (we were kinda eager to start and not eager to faff about with editors.)

So its not really mines in the pacific. [:(]

If I start up another game though I would be interested in making that OOB change.

...and yes, the sub routine (hah, pun), especially the ASW part of it, is totally borked.

I also think subs effectiveness versus ships moving faster than the submarine need to be drastically cut down as well. I think a simple "if target speed > sub speed drop accuracy by a factor of 10" or some such would be adequate.

yeah, mines in WITP were too much as they were unlimited, I once even created a minefield that had some kind of overflow as the minefield actually stopped existing when it went above something like 32000 mines (enemy mine sweepers couldn´t detect it anymore), started working again when it got below that number again. [:D] Still, I think with these low numbers now, the pendulum has swung to far the other way. I would find the current numbers ok if mine laying missions could be done in secret (perhaps limit them to 1 bomber squadron per port/night) but as it stands now, you have the non secret mine laying missions from WITP but only a couple of mines to do so. But the numbers would be easily changed with the editor if needed, while I´m not really a mine fanboy either.

The new super E are a pain, they come out of the shipyard, cruise around for two weeks and voilà, you´ve got equivalents of British destroyers that fought three years in the Atlantic. Way too effective. Got no clue how to cure this. Perhaps I´m doing another test, this time with the 12 DC mount split in 4x3 or something like that, or greatly reducing their ammo. It´s been said that 1x12 wouldn´t be as effective as the 12 DC being split, heck, the 12 DC mount is the most effective mount so far, no problem sinking my subs, so I really would like to prove this to myselve in another test. My testing definitely showed that the reason for the subs being whiped out isn´t the ASW mortar (with the wrong stats) because the modded E without an ASW mortar sink the subs just as easily as with the ASW mortar, so if the game says "Type 2 DC hits sub" the message seems to be definitely spot on. In this PBEM there is nothing I can do against them and even though there are only very few of them around at the moment, I´m already abandoning some areas with my subs, which will lead me to operate within my LBA range only but there won´t be any enemy merchant marine anyway so the Japanese have in fact won the sub war in 44. Rainer told me he will get hundreds of these ships... [8|] Pretty much the opposite turn out of what has happened in real life, not because the player in the game got more of these ships or uses them differently but because they have an extremely different performance. As the Japanese were pretty pathetic in detecting and engaging subs this is pretty much off and just because you put more DC on a vessel doesn´t necessary mean you would be better in detecting the sub and using the DC IMO. In total, the sub war (both ASW and especially air ASW) made a step forward compared to WITP I would say. In WITP you could whipe out the enemy subs with air ASW in 42 already. But 44 coming, the subs are 100% neutered by all these super E coming out of the shipyard and there´s nothing you can do. 3 engagements and you could bet on a sub sunk or in sinking condition.

Rainer sure won´t get within 10-12 hexes of one of my primary LBA bases (means a level 9 airfield) as he knows that there aren´t only the B-24 with their only purpose of wearing down his Cap (how does that sound?) but also my USN heavy and medium bombers with 70 low nav skill backed up by the USAAF attack bombers with 70 nav skill. And if he even gets closer, there will also be Aussie Beaufort VIII with 70 torp skill and many 1E dive and torp bombers. If he ends up within 12 hexes of such a base (Manado for example) he will also find out that the bombers get escorts (probabla a bad idea of mine anyway) like Corsairs and P-38J. Of course this all means nothing in 98% of the time when you look at how strikes from a level 9 airfield against a nav target look like, these are always worse than the worst strike against a land target it seems. It´s just usual to get two or three dozen messages of BGxy failing due to range or weather (no matter if 1 hex range and clear sky or 15 hex range and thunderstorms) so this could make our LBA nothing but a big bluff. Nevertheless I´m trying to move forward in a methodical way, not doing something weird things out of the box, so usually the invasions will be within 1E fighter range and if KB shows up it probably will stay 8 hexes off the invasion site (as has been done before too).
