IJ commander resurrected - Mundy (A) vs. Castor Troy (IJ) - restricted AAR

Didn't even take the time to read your post, only looked at the last three lines and I've only skimmed through that single AAR I've found and two funny highlights were found:

A) A Japanese invasion of Luzon that was nearly driven back into the SEA

B) Parts of KB being whiped out by a couple of light cruisers and destroyers as the carriers were moving around without any escorts that's been the best read I've had for a long time

You Sir, would be far better off not being such a loudmouth or not rate any players because if I would just post these two incidents on the main forum I would get a reply like "the AI totally sucks, can't handle the game" just to find out it's coming from a PBEM

To my surprise (not) the AAR stopped sometime in 42? What a laugh. For your info, I didn't even care to read all that text above, it's just laughable that people claim to know how the game works but fail to play it succesfully.

I'll just compare your two fails above with what Mundy has done:

A) he invaded Calcutta with about 12,000 av. How many people on the forum would bet on the Japanese at Calcutta to hold the town easily with 2000av? Unlike you at Luzon he brought quite an Army and he didn't exactly know what he would face. Who wouldn't know what he faces on Luzon in early 42? Just a pro like you it seems.

B) he lost his carriers too, in an engagement where he brought 800 carrier based aircraft while I brought 1100. Quite a difference to losing halve of KB to light cruisers and destroyers.


When I look at it from another perspective it's more like, praise AndyMac and the AI, it does better than some loudmouths playing PBEM. What a laugh.

If you wanna reply, don't bet on it if I read it and if you have another AAR with fails to read, well, I've already wasted my time skimming through your fails in 42. There's one thing I really have respect of, your balls to actually post that on the forum. And if you want to keep this nonsense going, keep it going outside of my AAR, a good idea would be to bring back your AAR and we can happily discuss what all has gone wrong and how this could happen to a guy that perfectly knows all the game. And if he doesn't, he finds an abstraction that isn't there. Must be the resurrection of that snoopy guy with his air (non) coordination guide.[&o]

For both points A & B, this was due to an effective Allied player that could accurately assess weaknesses in the IJ disposition.

For point A, it was making an accurate assessment of the strength of Allied defenders on Luzon versus an overextended IJ besieging force that had been thinned to support operations elsewhere. As a wider comment, how many Allied players engage in an effective active defence on Luzon, as opposed to settling down in Clark for a siege?

For point B, that was an exceptional maskirovka that played to the IJ strategy of forward deploying carriers at Luganville (as well as my own fondness for aggressive moves) that enabled surface assets to be deployed en-masse against the KB. You may have also overlooked the loss of US carriers off Japan in the months prior that fed IJ predisposition for offensive action.

Both of those situations are the marks of a competent Allied player.

I fail to be humbled by your comments. In fact, I feel comfortable to state that I've learned more from those setbacks than you have in your grand conquest of India.

As a more general comment, the forum is replete of AAR's where one side performs an impressive feat. The number of those AAR's where the two opponents were fairly matched is in the single digits.

We're in to April of '43, the game rumbling on slowly. Sadly I don't really have the time to dedicate to an AAR worth reading, as I have the view that readers deserve something more polished than a copy/paste of the combat report.

As for people who claim to know how the game works but fail to play it successfully, there's a world of difference in your success depending on who you play.

I'll just compare your two fails above with what Mundy has done:

A fundamental mistake of strategy on the part of Mundy, and not the mark of an experienced player. Control of Calcutta has a marginal impact on the outcome of the war, geographically distant from the IJ resource centre and with large numbers of IJ troops in theatre. Far better to have dumped 12k AV into the Kuriles, Hokkaido or even an end run into Honshu.

As for the tactical aspect of Calcutta, it is evident that there was limited understanding on the part of Mundy as to the extensive bonus that stems from defending UH terrain.

B) he lost his carriers too, in an engagement where he brought 800 carrier based aircraft while I brought 1100. Quite a difference to losing halve of KB to light cruisers and destroyers.

Failing to bring overwhelming naval force to a carrier engagement as the Allies is a serious oversight and not the mark of an experienced player.

If a direct clash is unavoidable, the outcome of the carrier engagement should be irrelevant to the IJ's defeat. The IJ aircraft may sink the Allied carriers, but the IJ carriers should in return be swarmed by large numbers of Allied surface warships.

Out of curiosity, where do you draw your line to determine "good" play, and who gets to comment? Does one need to invade India to be "good", and so pass judgement? Must one have an AAR to brag about extensive victories over their opponent?

Or is it more nuanced than that?

The broader difference between you and I castor, is that my posts on the forum are not intended to be self-serving.

There's a trend with you that (if you have some small ability to be introspective) might be able to detect - whenever there is an event or a combat that goes against you, it is rarely your fault. It's the game, the code, some oversight in the game design. It must be, because otherwise the explanation would be an oversight made by person inputting the orders.

We couldn't have that, could we?

I make no claim to know the game perfectly, just enough to be able to see deflections for what they are.

I like to think that I've been fairly candid with the mistakes I've made in AE, and can correctly identify where I went wrong. I feel no need to protect my own ego by shifting blame to oversights in the code, or failures of game design.

Swift & MrKane I can't comment on. I played Miller some years back when I was fresh to AE and had a rude lesson in how much I had yet to learn.

From what I've seen of JohnIII he is excellent tactically but limited in the strategic field.

I also see that you've articulated the misconception that I had suspected of you all along - namely assuming that time spent on the forum equates to experience in the game. I'll clear that up for you now and state quite firmly that it doesn't.

That text wall, not going to read it as I've hardly read parts of your earlier posts as it turns out to be wasted time. Was long enough to skim through your AAR but at least the way carrier operations were handled in the South Pacific pretty much made my day and a lot has confirmed my oppinion.

In the meantime I've also received three PMs suggesting I shouldn't even answer you anymore before having the AAR stalled but this is the direction it has taken anyways as I'm already fully ignoring text walls like this. Bad luck to always find a superior player, isn't it? I do tell you one thing though as this is also something two forum members have pointed out. If you want to comment on my opponent then do it in his AAR at least as this is a restricted one and Mundy can't comment until the game ended and it pretty much stinks to comment on his inferiour skills while you handle your carriers in an AI fashion, this in the year 2019 it seems.

Any other comments won't follow, just not going to read any more of your text walls trying to justify your own fails and pointing out flawed gameplay of others.

Two points:

1. One example is bad statistics.
2. Game performance and game knowledge are two vastly different things. Seems you have confused the two.

In the meantime I've also received three PMs suggesting I shouldn't even answer you anymore before having the AAR stalled but this is the direction it has taken anyways as I'm already fully ignoring text walls like this.

It's your prerogative to respond or not. Always has been, and I post in full knowledge of that.

I do tell you one thing though as this is also something two forum members have pointed out. If you want to comment on my opponent then do it in his AAR at least as this is a restricted one and Mundy can't comment until the game ended and it pretty much stinks to comment on his inferiour skills while you handle your carriers in an AI fashion, this in the year 2019 it seems.

Commenting on Mundy's AAR that he's in an unfair fight wouldn't be constructive or helpful, nor would pointing out the obvious flaws in his strategy be welcomed when he's past the point of no return.

Plus, if I were to do so, Mundy might decide to throw in the towel and then you'd no doubt level the accusation that I had meddled to bring the game to a pre-mature end.

Happy to have a discussion with Mundy when the game ends, but not before.

I don't feel the need to justify my failures, they're mine and I own them. They came about out of errors I made, at both the strategic and tactical levels. As much as I would like to, can't blame the game or the code for them.

Our first confirmed self proclaimed AE ostrich. Ostrich, the bird which avoids facing up to the oncoming steam roller by the simple action of burying its head in the sand. The avian equivalent of a human who refuses to read anything which is not fully complimentary of their own self perceived talents.

Being a human ostrich goes a long way towards explaining the, although muffled by the sand, the still clearly decipherable inane comments which are regularly made. Totally disregarding the points made by the opponent in a debate guarantees ending up on the losing side of a debate. Especially when the opposite side raises logical points, the avoider comes across as having no logical counter to the opponents argument and that always automatically validates the points made by the other side.

I wonder how many PMs which support mind_messing's points have been received by him. Is it less than 3 or more than 3? Most unlikely that they have suggested he run away from the debate like a frightened animal fearful of being unable to match the other side. In any case the number of received PMs he has received is irrelevant; truth is not a democracy where the majority wins. The truth is the truth even if the entire world says otherwise. Even though forced to recant by the overwhelming weight of the Roman curia, Galileo knew the truth would ultimately when he is reputed to have uttered sotto voce, "but it does revolve around the Sun". When the truth is opposed only by a human ostrich, there isn't even the possibility of a recant under duress.

Of course when one refuses to read, one tends to forget all the times in this AAR when criticism of Mundy's play has been made. Rather hypocritical to lay that charge against mind_messing who is only making the truthful and objective observation that in this match, the Japanese side's success has been significantly aided by Allied mistakes. Stronger Allied play would have exploited the Japanese mistakes. Or is our ostrich claiming that Japan has made no mistakes in this match. Such a claim would be quite illogical in view of the constant wailing over Allied escapes.

Then there is the issue of manners and etiquette. The green button exists for a specific purpose. If it isn't used, then it is the height of rudeness and arrogance to deliberately avoid reading mind_messing's comments. Mind you, this behaviour is consistent with the regular put down of others, LoBaron being a prominent target. Plenty of people have followed LoBaron's advice and achieved the results he said would ensue. Yet our ostrich always claims that those results are impossible to achieve. Oh well, I suppose that an ostrich which refuses to read anything which doesn't conform with his fantasy world, never learn what LoBaron said had to be done. Results which others have achieved.

I'm under no illusion our ostrich will read this post. It isn't meant for him. It is intended for all the readers who are capable of logical thought, who aren't ostriches, who are capable of self reflection and critical analysis. In short, readers who are adults capable of taking responsibility for the outcomes which result from their own actions.

Hooohooo! Google search boy chimes in too.[&o] Now if I have ignored those posts on the main forum for all those years how hard will it be to ignore it in my AAR? Must be like cat pooh. It always smells and there's that guy who always has an oppinion on every topic posting his lyrics. Must have been years now when I've last asked if he already has started playing the game, not even sure if he owns it. There is one thing I truly respect mindmessing for, he actually plays the game which must be a mile ahead of Google search boy that has yet to post a single combat report of his own game AFAIK. But then, my search skills surely aren't comparable to his as I haven't found any during the minute I tried.

A real dream would come true for the whole forum to see a PBEM AAR, like Google search boy in the Japanese corner and Admiral unescorted carrier group in the other. Game starts Dec 7th 1941, ending Feb 20th 1942 due to brilliant actions of either player.

Perhaps I could put my name below every post so it looks more like the posts of the forum elitists.

2. Again, you confuse game knowledge with game performance. The two are quite different. This point shouldn't need explanation, but happy to provide it if you find it hard to comprehend.

3. I agree that you're search skills aren't comparable. This is likely something you should focus on in future, as it will help you to develop your insights into what generates the outcomes you see in game. I think you'd agree that being able to distinguish between a code issue and an intended outcome would be helpful. Even more so seeing as your particular copy of AE seems to have an exceptionally large number of non-replicable code issues [:)]

One thing I have to dissapoint you though is that I'm not going to reply those guys that try to prove... I don't know what as I've stopped reading their posts. Those of Google search boy pretty much when he claimed the (non) air coordination guide is a good way to get coordinated strikes (which perfectly shows that using Google search and playing the game is quite a difference - must have been ten years ago I guess) and Admiral unescorted carrier group's posts when I realized how skilled he was which must perfectly enable him to rate the skills of other players, that apparently haven't lost their IJ game in mid 42 already. Perfectly knowing how to do stuff and not being able to do is also something I have to wonder about.

But hey, let them do their posts, if someone has a laugh then they have served a purpose in this AAR. I guess reading a book about fishing enables the reader to teach the fisher how to fish, at least that's how it comes around. In the meantime we keep seeing AARs that make it into 42 and end there for whatever reason. No disappointment on my side. What I love about you being back is that you stir the pot. Good or bad is a perspective, but you question things and force me to think things through. sometimes I agree with you, sometimes not. no big deal.

You are clearly a good player, this game just supports that opinion. I really enjoy your AAR's and I hope that you keep playing and making AAR's for as long as I am around to read them.



Having said all of that, you do burn bridges and I suspect that Alfred won't be posting in your AAR's any more. That's unfortunate as he does possess a lot of insight into how the game works and when the NDA doesn't preclude it, will share some of that insight.

Those of Google search boy pretty much when he claimed the (non) air coordination guide is a good way to get coordinated strikes (which perfectly shows that using Google search and playing the game is quite a difference - must have been ten years ago I guess) and Admiral unescorted carrier group's posts when I realized how skilled he was which must perfectly enable him to rate the skills of other players, that apparently haven't lost their IJ game in mid 42 already. Perfectly knowing how to do stuff and not being able to do is also something I have to wonder about.

But hey, let them do their posts, if someone has a laugh then they have served a purpose in this AAR. I guess reading a book about fishing enables the reader to teach the fisher how to fish, at least that's how it comes around. In the meantime we keep seeing AARs that make it into 42 and end there for whatever reason. Again, one of them at least plays the game, the other got an oppinion on everything on this world and copy pastes his lyrics into every thread on the forum, pretty strange disorder.

1. That's a bold claim regarding the air co-ordination guide. Have you, you know, any evidence that it's wrong?

2. On the topic of Google searches, I still think you need to do a search of "game knowledge" and "game performance" and understand the difference.

3. There's a wider point about game performance being related to the quality of your opponent, but lets make sure you can understand #2 before we start down that road.

4. In perhaps to harness your professed knowledge productively, why don't you provide the forum with "Castor Troy's Air Co-ordination guide"? Evidently this would be a fantastic development for the community as you seem to have a grasp of everything wrong with the current documentation.

Having said all of that, you do burn bridges and I suspect that Alfred won't be posting in your AAR's any more. That's unfortunate as he does possess a lot of insight into how the game works and when the NDA doesn't preclude it, will share some of that insight.

And absolutely not someone with access to more information on game mechanics than Castor.

Consider this a principled stand in defence of knowledge and empirical evidence over baseless assertions.

Castor needs the challenge as he's far too fond of making assertions that X is wrong without actually backing it up with evidence.

Layered CAP, for example. To Castor, it doesn't work. Broken. Pointless. Despite evidence to the contrary.

What you're seeing at this point are pretty much textbook psychological defence mechanisms
- denial (I am right and everyone else is wrong)
- passive-aggressive language (Alfred doesn't post AAR's and mind_messing loses battles, so they have no right to an opinion)
- delusion (the "forum elite" are out to drag Castor down)

One would expect to see more mature emotional responses for someone in their mid-40's, and especially so for a game that involves a great deal of logical thought, but you can't have everything I suppose.
