My opponent alludes to something going on near Canton Is. I'll just skip the detailed descriptions about a few sunken PT boats, cruisers and so forth hitting mines, raids by over 250 carrier aircraft and get right to the end of the story.

Meanwhile in the far North the Battle of Adak continues. Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 6 sacrifices itself dogging a Japanese bombardment TF. All four boats are sunk but the bombardment, by battleships Yamato and Ise, is short lived and does virtually no damage. This proves costly for the Japanese Transports carrying the Kiska Occupation Force.

Actually I had the Maizuru 2nd 100 prepped for Canton for about 6 months (guess). I just never got around to launching this little expedition...having never played the Allied side I did not realize how weak the Americans are at the beginning...I do now from my experience with Dixon...I knew going into this I should have launched the attack back in January or February....but decided to go ahead anyway to test the waters. Oh well...

In January you might have made it but sometime in that time frame I shipped in an RCT (and friends). The last reinforcements you probably observed from Baker were fragments of units that were in the main already there. Certainly by February the 2nd SNLF would have gotten slaughtered if it had come alone.

I suspect its all to do with pilot experience, if you have been using the GET pilot button liberally then they are but lambs to the slaughter....

Nope...more than likely fatigue...

At Port Moresby - The Tonies were in the 60's for experience not the best but not 40 or 50... The accompanying A6M2's were in the high 70's...both were flying LRCAP however so their fatigue was high...

In the Aleutians I was simply caught on the ground...and the planes over kiska were also on LRCAP as well and likely suffering from fatigue...

9/12/1942

Following in Commodore Perry's footsteps an American carrier task force, headed to an undisclosed target in the Home Islands, and previously undetected, stumbled upon several small Japanese resupply convoys approxiamately 250 miles East of Hokkaido. A number of freighters, transports and small escorts were damaged or sunk but the Americans presence was revealed. And in response, large numbers of Japanese aircraft redeployed to cover the Northern flank.

A few days later Japanese misery with LRCAP continued as approximately 20 A6M2's are shot down in the skies over Magwe after 50 P40E and 40 Hurricanes that were escorting the SE ASIA freight train jumped the CAP...

Comment: Not much return for my raid (4 x AKs and 3 x PCs) but the ships and pilots got some added experience. I got pretty dang close to the target without detection. Couldn't quite bring myself to not search with my SBDs etc though and the resulting antiship strikes gave the show away when I was only 5 hexes away from the launch point
at the main target. For now though, the former peace and quiet of Hokkaido is constantly broken by the drone of a/c engines (Japanese). At least those planes are just annoying Japanese peasants for the time being[:D]

As reported elsewhere...

Having the American carrier fleet show up off Hokkaido .... Cost - 3 AK sunk

Tracking the American carrier Fleet across the North Pacific with subs and land based air ... Cost - 9 Vals

Picking up the track for several days with an AV flying float planes .... Cost - 1 AV sunk

Having tracked the American Carrier fleet for 40 hexes across the North Pacific and being able to position KB(+) only 3 hexes away a week and a half later and then having Vals and Kates from KB spot the damn thing and then not launching a strike becuase of inclement weather...PRICELESS!!!!!!

Oh well...

Although this took place over New Guinea...The air war has become very frustrating for me...very few of my aircraft want to fly in Burma....I've had numerous escorted ground attack missions ordered ...occassionally they will actually launch and most of the time without escort...likewise i may order sweeps that will not launch or only a small part of the sweep will go...c'est la Guerre...
