CHARGE!

I like taking offense whever possible.  It is so early in the war that if you can get a couple of his CVs NOW (with no loss to you) then you can run the table until Jan 1943!  Watch out for his LBA.  Those USELESS laser-guided B-17/B-24 Smart Bombs are dangerous.

Disappearing HI ... What the ???

Post by n01487477 »

OK, slow turns happening but I would like someone to confirm this is usual ... I've never worried much about HI in other mods, but with EA, it is essential!

After capturing a base, does HI halve ?

Vladivostok DB - 240HI after capture 94 + 26 = 120
Khabarovsk DB - 300HI after capture 151
Palembang DB - 100HI after capture 50

If this is correct, it is the first I've known about it ... it doesn't effect Oil/Res, just HI!!! So where the hell do these factories go ... I'd prefer them damaged, not just part of an Alien abduction.

Check section 13.2.5 in the manual. HI is halved every time it changes hands.

Thanks Nomad,
logically I can and can't see why this occurs ...
On one hand, ok the local population flee town, there is not the workforce and the factories are shut down. On the other, it would be better to have them damaged and therefore I don't need to use HI and initial supplies to build them ...

Anyway, it certainly makes my job all that harder.
Thanks for the help ...

Have you ever gone overseas and tried to work in a factory? I haven't but I've heard it is very difficult to be efficient, and that is when everyone is trying to work together!

In wartime, I can imagine it is tough to get anywhere near the same level of output from a plant as the native owners if you are the occupying force - even with significant expenditures of capital.

I am currently reading a biography of Goering and a lot of it talks about how the conquered areas were folded into the economic control of the Reich. There were a lot of inefficiencies in the process.

Sorry for the hijack! [:)]

I agree Feurer Kreig, no need to apologise, I don't mind hijacks when they are with interesting information, and insight ... Having thought more about it, I realise my first thoughts were silly to think that I could get HI intact and efficient from Capture Date +1 ...

Onto the Sth Pacific ... [I'll edit it more later so that you don't have to horizontally scroll]
A. Take Savaii - Lvl 1 Airfield with EAB
B. Upolo taken with ground troops which will Ferry across to Pago Pago
C. Air Combat force, to assist in this and Papaete gamble.(I have no intel) - EAB and combat lcu's
D. Pick up SNLF from Christmas and then onto Papaete ...

No respawning CVs --- although the Allies do get the Essex class earlier and get an additional 4 Essex class CVs above and beyond what happened historically --- so the Allies don't lose out in terms of carriers lost in 1942.

Well, that's that settled then.

19/2/42 - more planning

Post by n01487477 »

Thanks Nemo for confirming that ..

19/2/42

[*]Air attacks on Batavia, Singapore and Changsa.
[*]No Land combat, except Bombardment attacks ..
[*]3 days until my landings on Savaii, 5-6 Days until Cold Bay.

Map below shows my position in Russia, Kuysysheva remains. Am loading Nth HQ troops to attack Okha and then Nikolaevsk. Will not have much air support from Sea, but am planning a bit of Airfield attacks in the next few days. Other troops going to finally take Petropavlosk .. and hence add an air-bridge to the Aleutians.

CV's moving East ... roll the music from Jaws ... I hope...

20/2 ~22/2 I just hit 4 Stars!

Post by n01487477 »

20/2 ~22/2 Samoa
21/2
[*]- Kate's and Vals set to navy search attack the hordes of SS's around Samoa. B5N2 Kate attacks SHCH139. Narwhal is hit.
[*]- Asw patrol successfully attacks SS I-26 (10 hits) & SS Gar (7Hits)
[*]- AP Ryoyu Maru #21 hits a mine at Savaii (those Russians have been working again)
[*]- 26th Special base force lands on Savaii
[*]- Sasebo 3&8CSNLF, Sasebo NGF & 27th Special Base Force land on Upolu.

22/2
[*]- B5N2 Kate attacking Gudgeon, Grayling, SHCH133 & Gar, but none are hit ... [:@]
[*]- unloaded AP's sent back to Canton to pickup 3&5CSBLF (I never had enough TT's here)
[*]- Asw patrol moves from Savaii to Upolu and attacks SS SHCH139 (1 hit)
[*]- Savaii SBF, doesn't attack ... commander spends the day laying on the beach.
[*]- Upolu is captured.
[*]- AP Kyuma Maru gets lucky, with a torpedo flashing by the bow.(SS SHCH133)
[*]- AP Marsu Maru is sunk by 2 torpedoes by SS SHCH139 at Upolu

At least 6 SS's greet me here, it's a feeding frenzy but the constant aerial spottings are keeping them somewhat suppressed. Although SS SHCH133 & SHCH139, is attacked and then pops up to make an attack.

Other news:
[*]- Troops loaded at Dutch Harbour ready to attack Cold Bay, assisted by a Inf Div from the mainland.
[*]- Amboina airfield attacked, I've got plans underway to take this base.
[*]- 12 B-17E Fortress set to 33,000 feet, bomb the reef off of Palmyra, two days in a row ... seems like more pressure is being placed here.

Image

The two other TT's are heading for Papette, what will await me there ?

23/2/42 ~ 33K Casualties

Post by n01487477 »

23/2/42 ~ 33K Troops lost
Ground combat at Kuysyshevka [SIB]

Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 302220 troops, 4239 guns, 1603 vehicles, Assault Value = 7764 ~ Enough troops ?

Defending force 136801 troops, 2236 guns, 494 vehicles, Assault Value = 4455
Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 4 [:'(]

Japanese max assault: 7258 - adjusted assault: 754
Allied max defense: 4572 - adjusted defense: 17841

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 4)

Japanese ground losses:
33728 casualties reported [X(]
Guns lost 898 [X(][X(]
Vehicles lost 58 [X(][X(][X(]

Allied ground losses:
1770 casualties reported [&:]
Guns lost 103
Vehicles lost 1

1 July 1916 at the Somme, the British suffered 57,470 casualties ... while I could never imagine such a horrific scene, and in no way am I comparing a computer game loss to the sheer madness on the Western Front ... my advanced apologies to any who lost loved ones in any conflict...

Anyway Wilfred Owen says it best...
What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of good-byes.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

Other news:
[*]Savaii finally captured and Patrol Planes set.
[*]Ambonia attacked again by IJN and IJA LB.

RE: 24/2/42 ~ Cold Bay heats up

Post by n01487477 »

24/2/42 ~ Cold Bay heats up

5 Regiments, 1 CSnlf and the 5th SNLF storm the beaches at Cold Bay, all are offloaded, except a small fragment (I used all phases of the day, rode the wave in and didn't have my troops packed like sardines). A PC, DD and AK hit mines, but many were cleared and the damage from mines was minimal. 20 A20B's and in a separate attack 12 B-19A's flew in but did no additional damage. All troops are secure for a deliberate attack next turn. Confidence is high! But I know ultimately, the whole Aleutian campaign is a disaster, I didn't secure Kodiak, nor will be able to in the future. His CV's remained in port, and I am now open to LB attacks.

Other News
[*]SS 166 Sth of Perth scored a hit on a TK.
[*]Palmyra and Christmas Is are bombed - the Grinch ! (I didn't think he had the range)
[*]Deliberate attack at Petropavlovsk reduces the Fort to 1 ... troops will offload here tomorrow.
[*]Deliberate attack at Singapore failed to make any headway (Lvl 4)
[*]7 units disappear in Russia (last attack), Michael thinks because of supplies ... it isn't!

Q's.
1. There are no reinforcements assigned to CEF, to load these on the H.Is and then land them in China will cost *2 the PP's ... this is not fair IMO.
2. How can I get him to commit his CV's? I'm thinking Midway ... that's gotta work! right ? He's got 4 + 1 due soon, plus more and better escorts now than I think I have.

RE: 25/2/42 ~

Post by n01487477 »

Taking some sage advice, I've decided to co-ordinate my future ops, and step back from my impulsive attacks and try to be more careful. This includes bolstering my outlying area's and making sure that more recon is done before launching other operations. Bringing an assortment of troops and equip to help ensure decisive victories.
It is now almost March '42, and the status-quo has changed, the Allies are still intact, have not been severely damaged and I am not in-control of the area's I possess. The Allies will probably try something in the coming month or two. The Allies have 4/5 CV's now in the Pacific, with plenty of support vessels ... therefore I must be ready for this. And by the nature of the LB attacks, I believe it will be in the CPac (Wake/Palmyra/Christmas) . Time to set these Islands with mines, CD guns, LB, subs and CV's close at hand. I've had enough coaxing the Allies out, even if I might make an attempt on Midway, I think the Allies will decline the battle. So time to go silent and become deadly.

Other news:
[*] Petropavlovsk fort falls to 0. Troops unloaded under hails of shells and SS surface attack, even though I had an ASW patrol there. These troops once it is all done & dusted, will head for Okha.
[*] Central China and an important hex (48,36) - Shock attack moves the Chinese back. Banzai!
[*] "Burying the lead" - Cold Bay is taken intact. I missed 2 SS's by offloading quickly. Will change some of these troops to 4th Fleet and send them to Midway

RE: 27/2 Pape - I want my mummy!

Post by n01487477 »

Papette ~ the Allies are defending the last "bastion" in the Sth Pac. SS's so far. Let's see how many troops are there, and additional forces. But I keep thinking that the Allied CV's are languishing still on the West Coast.

Other news:
[*]Kuysyshevka
Attacking force 261379 troops, 3165 guns, 1532 vehicles, Assault Value = 6229
Defending force 105225 troops, 1682 guns, 178 vehicles, Assault Value = 3714

Japanese max assault: 5831 - adjusted assault: 1355
Allied max defense: 3763 - adjusted defense: 16861

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 4)

Japanese ground losses:
15694 casualties reported
Guns lost 274
Vehicles lost 40

Allied ground losses:
1896 casualties reported
Guns lost 60
[*] Petropavlovsk still holds despite 3 days of attacks.
[*] PP crisis continues ... I have to do some more analysis of incoming and outgoing
[*] One Nav guard lands on Nth Java ... my mistake in not getting them to follow!

RE: 28/2 Pape - I want my mummy!

Post by n01487477 »

28/2 ~ Feb comes to a close!

[*]Situation around Papaete is quiet, apart from the SS's patrolling. Will go a little closer and investigate more ...
[*]My CV's can stay on station a bit, because of the AO replenishments, but not too long ... if I decide to land here then, I've some a/c brought in, but ultimately I need to upgrade this airfield and get some firepower or just tag and release..
[*]DD Hamakaze hit a mine at Cold Bay & AP Otori Maru had 3 Bomb hits from 18 A-20B Boston's. I've moved some Zekes to Attu, with 4 op losses (it's extended range time) and then next turn to Cold Bay.

Aleutians - Petropavlovsk (ok it's Ruskie) Still stands, Cold Bay was taken ... now the race to increase AF's ...

Celebes - Makassar taken, Kendari & Amboinia targeted this month

Malaya - Singapore Lvl 4, troops inbound

Philippines - pushed back the Allies to the outskirts of Manila and Bataan

Russia
- Disastrous land combat results in Kuysyshevka, although I've secured the HI I wanted.

Sumatra - Southern part of the Island is secure.

Sth Pacific

3/3/42 Still Walking the tight-rope
[*]Merak/Serang [Java] is captured with little resistance, I'd really love to cut off some of his retreating forces as I would do in any invasion of Java, but I just don't have the troops available.
[*]Singapore troops are marching into the hex in the next turn or two ... there will be a Shock attack and I'll lose some more valuable troops before I can use them.
[*]Papaete [Tahiti] 3 PT boats are strafed again, I'm hoping to have one more air attack before sending in the troops and small SCTF.
[*]My sub laid mine field at Kodiak encountered 2 DD's but didn't hit any.
[*]Cst Guns half way to Kwajalein, ML nearing their destination, and will mine Wake, Palmyra & Christmas. I also have one going to Papaete, but it is running low on fuel.
[*]Troops successfully evacuated from PNG, going to Kwajalein and Noumea.
[*]Attack on Ambonia about to embark, assisted by CVE's and CVL's ... air coverage should be good.Enemy sub activity has been low here for a while, I guess they are needing repairs and are in Australia.
[*]Spare TB's on route to Papaete and additional Zekes going to Kwajalein. 109's heading for Palmyra.
[*]Troops about to be picked up from Cold Bay, to be redistributed and maybe used in a Midway assault.
[*]Supplies are at a premium, so bolstering Kwaj and stripping more small Is of their supplies.

Angst averted

Post by n01487477 »

4/3~5/3 I have an aversion to PT's, I really do ... Holden Caulfield(Catcher in the Rye) doesn't have the angst I do regarding these phoney, devil cork filled, pint sized abominations of all things natural and unnatural ...

But these last few days has given me almost(not quite) as much satisfaction as sinking a CV, strafing and sinking 4. And a little SC off Papaete which dispatched two more to Beelzebub. [:@][:@][:@]

My TT's are still stationed one hex off Papaete, awaiting a sweep of SS's from that same SCTF, and Kates and Vals from my CV's stationed a little further off.

Thankfully, the Imperial Navy has provided many AO's to keep my mobile fleets well stocked and ready for action in these far-flung shores. I intend on defending Papaete now, not just a snatch and grab, but a real force of Vals and Kates, which have been flying non-stop from Tokyo. It will take 2-3 months to make this a Lvl 4 due to a lack of engineers in the SE Pacific. But if I still possess this base, it will force the Allies to go Sth and add to their timetable for advance.

The Allies are daily taking recon of Palmyra, this is a sure sign of something to come. Don't you think? I hope I will be ready in time.

Okha targetted ...

Post by n01487477 »

7/3 ~ Game on!
After having a small hiccup in our play, we continue and hope that no technical problems remain.

I know I said I wouldn't do this type of thing(more prep and combined arms), but it was already in the pipeline so I sent it ...
Okha is assaulted, by a Div and an eng unit, the Japanese people can no longer stand by and let the Russians control what is rightfully ours!

DD Kisaragi is hit by 2 shells and is broken away from the main force to return to a close friendly port.

Having recon'd Koepang the in the days prior to this, I took a chance, and sent a large sweep ... [:'(]
Day Air attack on Koepang [Timor] , at 29,77
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zeke x 54
Ki-46-II Dinah x 1

Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 12
Wirraway CA-1 x 7

No Japanese losses
Allied aircraft losses
P-40E Warhawk: 10 destroyed
Wirraway CA-1: 7 destroyed

Finally my Papaete forces finally unload ... there is no real resistance.

Image

Other:
[*] SS I-166, hits 6 off Western Australia, might make Tarakan with 50Flt damage.
[*] Allies bomb Palmyra at 22000, I've moved the zekes back in.
[*] Petropavlovsk shock attack is a failure ... few more days to build up again!
[*] Yesterday new troops arrived in Singapore, the Shock caused 1000 casualties. More troops inbound from China should be there in 10 days.
