any chance to retaliate against the TF from the air (rabaul should be within betty & zero range)?
one other thing came to my mind reading the battle report;
Katori is a speed 18 CL, making her the slowest ship in the TF
in my game she was sunk at midway escorting a transport force (thats why i know she's a bit slow [8|])
(i understand they're suposed to be escorting the transports, but she might have been better of within the transport TF instead of the combat compartment)
i usually use the speed 18 CL's for transport missions with light to medium expected resistance, that way the DD's have a bit more support, minimizing losses (not that my 15 lost DD's actually show that atm...)
you might want to check where the rest of the speed 18 CL's are at, because there are 3 or 4 of them i believe.
Thanks Flaggelant.
I couldn't agree with you more on the Katori issue. I think I must have been a bit sloppy when I put that particular task force together otherwise Katori would not have been there. It was only after the battle when I was looking at the damage sustained that I realised Katori with her deplorable 18 knots was there. I'm assuming that had a lot to do with the Allied fleet having the upper hand. I agree with the idea of using them as convoy escorts (and that is my intended use for them) as they have a reasonable AA component IIRC.
Unfortunately there is worse to come (post coming on that).
Air power at Rabual was coaxed to do something about these intruders but decided to leave the sailors to their own devices.[8|] In any event it has been a good learning experience and that is what getting into PBEM is all about. [:D]

Several ships are going to need a slice of luck to stay afloat. On the positive side the transports were saved and that was the whole point of having the surface action task force there… in that regard they did their job and if the combat reports are reliable CA Australia may not make it back to a safe port. Mutsu and company also came as a surprise to Todd as he had not picked them up with his recon.

sinking CA australia for a couple of damaged CL's and a transport sounds like a good deal, if their speed isn't reduced to much they should make port safely i asume

Yikes. Singapore was a shambles when the victorious Japanese troops marched into the city. The shipyard was at 1 with 24 points needing repair. Resources at 1 with 9 points of repair needed. Heavy Industry at 1 with 149 points of repair needed whilst manpower was at 2 with no repair required. The port was 100% out of commission whilst at the airfield the runway at 76% damaged and the airfield service area had sustained 35% damage. There is plenty of work here for the engineers. I have decided to only repair the shipyard as I want a port able to make repairs in this part of the world for the eventual reckoning with the Royal Navy.

I'm thinking that this time tocaff has been the instructor. I would have been better served by keeping RADM Daigo and his 4 cruisers at Gili Gili instead of letting the hare off into the Coral Sea looking for a damaged Australia (see my next post for the consequences of this decision).
The light cruisers have had their flooding stabilised for the time being so they may well make it back to a decent port. As for the Australia I fear the damage reports may have given an overly optimistic impression of the seriousness of her damage... her speed seems to be undiminished and she looks to have made good her escape.
Thanks on Singapore. The Dutch East Indies need to be sewn up and I would like to finish off the Philippines too before moving on anywhere else.

Second Battle of Goodenough Bay On the night of 8/9 February 1942 RADM Daigo was ordered to leave the anchorage at Gili Gili and proceed south to hunt down stragglers from the RAN force that had visited the night before. Daigo took his force of 4 cruisers, Aoba, Kinugasa, Furutaka, Kako and 6 destroyers and made haste to the south with hopes of catching up with HMAS Australia. Back in the anchorage though, for the second night in a row, the night time peace was rent with the sound of gunfire. APD-31 which had been quietly shepherding the transports Arabia Maru, Denmark Maru and Ryuyo Maru headed off smartly in the direction of the enemy ships shooting as she went. Her lookouts reported a hit on a ship believed to be Houston and another on what was believed to be the light cruiser Marblehead before her gallant attack was snuffed out in a rain of shells. She quickly sank and the American ships moved in to deal with the transports. All three transports registered hits but the Americans seemed keen to make a hasty departure. Although they had all been damaged only Denmark Maru was suffering concerning flooding and fires. The other 2 appeared to have their fires under control. With some hard work and a slice of luck all 3 would be saved. As the American ships were moving out they came upon DD Wakaba and AP Kanayamasan Maru. Both ships had been damaged in the engagement from the night before. Both were dealing with flooding issues and were ill prepared to deal with the threat posed by Houston with a couple of light cruisers and a bunch of destroyers. Shell fire from the American ships soon rendered both ships so unseaworthy that they sank. Not long after the American fleet had the good fortune to locateDD Hatsuharu and 2 transports; Buenos Aires Maru and Ceylon Maru. Hatsuharu was the only remaining destroyer assigned to protecting the transport fleet from the previous night which had come through unscathed. She had been given the task of looking after these 2 transports which still had supplies to bring ashore. Thinking the coast was clear after the RAN had departed this little fleet was ordered back to finished unloading the much needed supplies to the engineers at Gili Gili. The first that the commander of Hatsuharu knew of the American presence was 3 torpedoes smashing into the hull of Ceylon Maru. Hatsuharu threw herself at the American ships and was quickly mauled by the overwhelming force arrayed against her. By the time she was finished and beginning to sink her lookouts had reported 1 shell hit each on Houston, the light cruiser Marblehead and the destroyer Paul Jones. Not long after Ceylon Maru and Buenos Aires Maru also slipped under the waves and made their descent to the bottom of the sea. The Americans poured on the steam and congratulated themselves on a successful raid.

I'd say keep a close eye on Port M. they're probably operating from there,
so recon & port attacks might be a valuable counter-tactic
On Singapore; did you hit it with sea bombardments,
or was the industrial damage all from you'r airbombing and the hostile engeneers sabotage?
(engeneers seem to destroy some of the industry after being forced to retreat/surrender)
i try to take all oil, resources & HI locations with overwhelming force and minimal bombardments (air nor sea bombing)
so far it worked quiet nice for me
and i'm not sure if you can choose to repair or not from the primary base functions (port/air)
but as long as there are engeneers in the hex it autorepairs these (not sure on what cost?)
Surprisingly good performance by the older US Cruisers, especially the Marblehead. Isn't it usually the Boise that causes all the trouble?
I did not put her name up in lights but Boise was indeed there. I was surprised to find that those 3 transports, while mauled, actually survived the night.
In retrospect leaving the Aoba quartet on guard duty would have set up quite a battle to follow on from the night before but it was not to be so. Vagaries of war I guess.

I have my sights set on Port Moresby but want Gili Gili at level 3 AF before I make a move. The airfield has made it to level 1 and my scout planes have moved in so the chance of surprise raid should be reduced. Not sure that the warships are operating out of Moresby though as they were last seen tearing off in a southerly direction more likely Cairns, Townsville or maybe Brisbane.
I didn't go anywhere near a sea bombardment at Singapore. Damage came from aerial bombardment and the defending forces. Singers has been the first place I've taken that has substantial damage.
I'm still a few days ahead of my AAR but the repairs have been coming along quite swiftly.

Whilst a substantial number of Allied units are tied down at Bataan a large number of Japanese units are now free to move in a lay siege to Manila.

The 22 Oscar flying escort account for the 1 P-35 flying CAP. Land: Allied troops have again made a move against the Japanese forces at Clark Field. A deliberate Japanese attack results in assault odds of 164 to 1. The 107th USAAF Base Force, 71st PA Division, 26th P.S. Cavalry Regiment and the 57th Regimental Combat Team surrender. Japanese forces report 119 casualties, 7 guns and 2 vehicles lost and capture 5777 prisoners. They had been there only a couple of days previous and were soundly rebuffed then. Their surrender was unexpected and as a result only 9 units are left to defend Manila. A rather large Japanese force is marching to lay siege to capture Manila before dealing with Bataan which has 23 units holed up there. The Dutch PT boats are on the move with a least a couple sighted moving north towards the fleets based around Balikpapan. The fleet commanders have been ordered to by wary of night time torpedo attacks. Some shipping has been sighted at Andaman Islands. The recon reports it as a cruiser but it may well be a submarine. In any event a sizeable amount of Japanese air power in the area is now focused on naval attack just in case the Royal Navy is up to something. Update on Hiryu. She has made it to the HI. System damage had reached 50 by the time she made it. Repairs are now underway. Akagi, Zuikaku, Hiei and Kirishima are also at the HI bringing down system damage. 4 Mutsuki class destroyers are also undergoing the February ’42 upgrade and will be incorporated into KB when modifications are complete.

Plenty of time to read up on repairing no doubt[:D]
Is Manila an urban hex in Stock ? I'm sure it is, but I can't remember precisely ... hope you brought plenty of supplies, Artillery, engineers and anything else laying around[8D]

Hopefully the IJN is taking stock of the huge damage bill from a single bomb. Got me to thinking that if something like this had of happened during the early months of the war would it have caused a rethink of KB operations.
Manila is urban. I have plenty of engineers although a little light on in the artillery department. When everyone has arrived there will be a considerable force involved in the attack. Preliminary recon suggests that only light forces are currently in the city. Land bombardments should give a better indication of what I am up against. I quizzed Todd about the 4 units that went on a death ride at Clark Field and it seems that they weren't ordered to do this (should still be holed up in Manila I guess). Todd has been stoic about it all writing it off as one of those things that happen. Guess he has just gone and raised the bar in the chivalry stakes.

15 February 1942 Burma Air: 13 Blenheim appear at Mandalay and are met by a CAP of 9 Zero. 3 Blenheim are destroyed and the airbase takes 1 hit. Land: Japanese forces at Taung Gyi (after the success of reducing for level to 0 last turn) and suffering little disruption go for a shock attack. Assault odds of 2 to 1 are achieved (mysteriously the fort level has returned to level 1 and is again beaten down to 0 – is this a defensive bonus for defending a jungle/forest hex?) but the attackers are soundly rebuffed losing 1197 causalities, 23 guns and 2 vehicles against 156 Allied casualties and 4 guns lost. China Land: At Hengchow Japanese bombardment causes 302 Chinese casualties and 8 guns lost. Air: 22 Ann bomb Lanchow and report 1 airbase hit, 2 airbase supply hits and 14 runway hits. Philippines Land: Japanese bombardment attack at Bataan causes 151 casualties and 1 gun lost. South Eastern Pacific Land: Troops are ashore at Woodlark Island. DEI Air: 27 Zero fly Sweep over Palembang and meet 3 Hawk 75A. 1 Zero is lost for 2 Hawk destroyed. 15 Nell bomb Banjarmasin and cause 2 airbase hits, 2 airbase supply hits and 11 runway hits. At Medan 2nd WS Garrison Battalion is bombed by 15 Sally and 13 Lily and loses 37 casualties and 1 gun lost. Near Pinrang 11 Zero swoop in on a PT task force and score 8 hits onPT TM-8 and 4 hits on PT TM-7. At Macassar 13 Val and 34 Kate from mini KB score 2 airbase hits, 1 airbase supply hit and 16 runway hits. Land: Japanese shock attack at Balikpapan achieves 13 to 1 combat odds (forts at level 3) and the base is captured. My forces will take a breather and await some reinforcements racing up from Singapore to break this resistance. The DEI is also infested with PT task forces so the Zero attack was designed to put a dent in this offensive power. Australia was scuttled and confirmation of this loss makes the losses suffered at Goodenough Bay a little easier to take. The loss of Australia is credited to 16 inch gun fire so notch one up forBB Mutsu.
