June 2nd thru 4th

North Pacific

With two successive days of assaulting the allied forces on adak they fall on the 4th. The base is a wreck thanks to the KB and Yamato,
but we have enough units to make it operations shortly. The allied command was nice enough to build it to port 4, airfield 4.
We also bagged 29 B-17's that had been trapped on the field. The heavy bombers take a long time to repair when damaged and airfield is damaged thus they were trapped after the 1st assualt.

Port Hedland northern Australia, since the aussies recaptured this empty base it has been quiet till we spotted some ships moving up. The Nagato left Darwin to investigate and ran into an old Dutch ship. It was dispatched in proper ceremony.

South Pacific

On June 5th a 3 destroyer group swept into Tongatapu harbor and surprises the transports that were unloading. They inflict heavy damage to the ships that had to cancel unloading and try and get underway.

Suprise of Surprises. I figured the Enterprise retreated to Auckland with the Prince of Wales. So it was time for Japan to reinforce our forces on Suva, unfortunatly it appears the Enterprise is south of Suva, it does not find the destroyers but begins to wreck havoc on our reinforcements. 2 tranports go down, The BB shakes of the bomb hit. This convoy was only 120 miles from Nadi to the west. The CAP from Nadi was protecting a CL that was at Suva, trying to prevent allied resupply. This battle is getting to be a lot like Guadalcanal.

This also taught me something new. When my Betties attacked the CV Enterprise and Prince of Wales a few days ago they showed up in one combat report as the BB's and transports below, this lead me to believe they were one group. Since I tailed the POW with Subs to New Zealand I figured the CV Enterprise was with her. But as you can see from the report below, the transports and BB's appear together, but they are two seperate taskforces in the same hex. Thus I now believe the CV Enterprise was always independant of POW just in the same hex.

Historical fact
The Arare ("Hailstone") was a Asashio-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy.

On 5 July 1942, Arare and two other destroyers were torpedoed by USS Growler seven miles (11 km) east of Kiska Harbor (52?‹0?ŒN 177?‹40?ŒE / 52?‹N 177.667?‹E / 52; 177.667). Struck amidships, Arare blew up and sank. 42 survivors were rescued by boats from the crippled destroyer Shiranuhi

These destroyers were meant to take advantage of the Japanese advantages in torpedo firepower and were designed to screen larger ships and engage in hit and run attacks against enemy vessels. A total of 10 ships of this class were built. Then the Akizuki class followed. None of the Asashio class survived the war.

Each ship had 3 boilers running 2 geared turbine shafts with a power output of 50,000 hp (37,000 kW) at the screws, giving it a top speed of 35 knots (65 km/h) and a range of 5,700 nautical miles at 10 knots (19 km/h) or 960 nautical miles (1,780 km) at 34 knots (63 km/h).

The Asashio class DD's were armed with:

6 5" guns arranged in 3 turrets with two guns per turret.
4 25mm anti-aircraft guns.
8 24" Long Lance torpedoes arranged in two launchers on pivoting mounts
16 depth charges in rear racks.

June 8th 1942

Capt Ishii Shizue paced the bridge of the CV Junyo, he was in charge of the taskforce that consisted of all of Japans light carriers. The day before they had traveled west of Fiji in hopes of catching the CV Enterprise while the battleship taskforce escorted the reinforcements into Nandi. But to their dismay the CV had shown up south of Fiji and attacked the reinforcements. So orders since his task force was undetected proceed east to engage what they believed to be the CV Enterprise operating alone. The KB was to far to give assitance and his ships should easily deal with one carrier.

The early morning sun began to rise when they awoke Capt Shizue, early morning scout planes taking off had spotted an American Carrier plus battleship escorts less then 30,000 yards away.

Capt Ishii gave imediate orders that did not need to be given, disengage and ready all combat aircraft. The enemy was amongst them!

June 8th 1942

The orders were given, the Japanese ships turned north at full speed the allied ships after a pause reacted quickly to move closer to the Japanese carriers, while crews raced to arm the planes on both sides.

Capt Shizue was told they had to many planes to get a full strike ready quickly, so he gave the order, send whats ready we must strike first.
The Japanese carriers turned into the wind and their planes began to quickly gather. He ordered the other planes to stand down, and for as much CAP to get up as the enemy would not be sleeping. It was time for Samurai's to prove their worth.

It was the Japanese that arrived over the American carrier first, and with experianced percision they put two torpedo's into the American Carrier, meanwhile divebombers pepper the battleship.

We are fortunate that only 3 hits are scored, and thank the zero's for engaging and disrupting the attacks. But those 3 strikes are enough to cancel operations for Taiyo, and Ryujo whos planes divert to Nadii, where in the afternoon they are needed. In a similar case we learn the TBD's have to ditch and the wildcats and Dauntless's divert to Suva.

In the afternoon both carrier groups are clouded in and the battle turns over to Nadii where they allied planes try to attack the transports and battleships. Fortunatly the Zero's from the Ryujo and Taiyo bring a much needed boost, as of late the Allies and reclaimed the airspace due to their abundance.

Capt Ishii Shizue is happy and concerned with the days events. They were not expecting to find the CV Hornet, they believe it must be close to sinking but he has two concerns. The enemy escorts could leave the CV and head to Nadi, or they could retreat one of two routes, east to Tongatupu or Pago, or SW to Auckland. He makes his decision, we must not let this opportunity escape. The CV Enterprise may be close, they have enough firepower to engage on more CV but it will be close. He orders the two stricken carriers to seperate then takes the remaining ships south to try and catch the enemy ships.

This day see's joint efforts at mopping up the damaged allied forces. The two crippled Japanese carriers move out without any interferance.
The allied ships retreated towards New Zealand.

Kates/Vals from Nadi they use to fly from Ryujo/Taiho engage damaged ships from long range. Surpisingly Betties from Noumea fly out at long range and finish off the Hornet and Houston. This leaves the mini KB to finish off the other big boy!

Historical Fact
USS Hornet, a 19,800 ton Yorktown class aircraft carrier, was constructed at Newport News, Virginia. Commissioned in October 1941, she spent the next four months shaking down in the Atlantic. Transferred to the Pacific in March 1942, Hornet was immediately employed on the Doolittle raid. On 18 April 1942, she launched 16 Army B-25 bombers to attack Japan, a strike that caused relatively little damage, but which had enormous strategic implications.

Hornet was then sent to the South Pacific to reinforce U.S. units there following the Battle of Coral Sea, but was recalled to Pearl Harbor in mid-May. She then took part in the Battle of Midway, on 4-6 June, during which her planes shared in the sinking of the Japanese cruiser Mikuma.

In August 1942, Hornet returned to the South Pacific to join in the fight for Guadalcanal. During much of September and October, she was the only operational U.S. aircraft carrier available to oppose the Japanese in that area. On 26 October 1942, during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, her planes attacked and badly damaged the Japanese carrier Shokaku. In return, however, Hornet received heavy bomb and torpedo damage, necessitating her abandonment. Though accompanying U.S. destroyers attempted to scuttle her, she remained afloat until torpedoed and sunk by Japanese ships early in the morning of 27 October.

June 10th thru 15th 1942

We have done turns fast, so no time to update.

Kyberbill – Yes the suppy lines are long, but saki (supplies are plentiful) after a slow logistics start I have caught up well. Supplies are not the problem initially its moving supplies, troops and resources that seems the biggest hurdle to me. As for home islands I started with 145 days supplies of resources that has dwindled to 98 days, I am hoping patch 2 gets rid of the wastage and useless hauling allowing me to stop using fuel to transport around Honsho. Although supplies might become an issue if I don’t slow down one of these fronts. To curb resource use I was debating turning off some LI in Japan to allow more efficient supply creation thru HI use, but the lads at the front demand supply and we have more bases to stockpile supply into, so I will probably give another 90 days before I make that decision. I still have troops to move out, and the ships are becoming available.

Scotts incursion into the north forced me to alter my shipping there to secure the northern path to Aluetians, fortunately it has been resecured for the moment.

Yes Scott is correct I have moved a lot of troops into India, as my main goal Calcutta did not fall, I had some earmarked for Ceylon, but that is on hold till I secure all around Calcutta and push him back. Burma is secure, China is reduced to defending Changsa and 1 base out from Chungking, will post picture soon. I have not pulled any artillery out of Mongolia area, but have pulled divisions, 1 is in Fiji, 1 was just used in Aluetians and 1 is in India.

Scott has played a very strong upfront defense. He defended Port Morseby and Noumea which has slowed my pacific campaign so that I am stuck into a huge furball at Suva.
I intended by now to have Pago, although that seems out of reach now. Not sure if I can secure Suva I have 3 plus divisions vs close to 2 divisions but as Japan did at Guadalcanal we will give it a go, though it is a long supply line and I am debating its worth. The next 60 days shall tell me whether I can secure or must hold.

I still have a couple of objectives I still feel I can take but Suva stalls some of the assets needed. It is June now so the ability to be offensive is dwindling as allied power increases. I am greatly enjoying Japan for the 1st time, I am fortunate Scott said we could play Scen 2, as with my early economic mistakes, not sure I would have had the cushion to correct the industry. It is now pumping along on tract.

The BB’s and Transports have left Fiji with the main supplies and troops unloaded. I lost only 3 transports so a good relief effort, plus the sinking of the CV Hornet and BB Mississippi, CA Houston.

Japanese samurai’s invaded an empty Norfolk island and surprisingly the Prince of Wales and company showed up!!! We thought she had a couple months to repair. She appeared fine, but once again the Betties from Noumea had to administer a strong lesson. This time she should go to the repair yards.

This is another furball, though one we feel a little more in control of then fiji. We have invested Calcutta and secured strongpoints around. We have just taken Dacca and our next aim is to secure the last few bases behind our lines and Burma, I have included maps. There are a sizable number of troops in this area. Once that is secured we can finish Calcutta and move on the rest of India, though I am sure there are a lot of troops out there. The airwar is daily. We always have the advantage as he is coming at us, but he soon will be bringing in new planes.

Suva: We flew in a Sally group and it went in without escorts, luckly the fighters went first and knocked down most of the resistance, this was followed by countersweeps that dwindled our fighters strength and fatigue. So we stood down on the 18th. That’s when all broke loose in the south!!!

June 18th

The turn came to me with a happy and angry symbols from Scott, we almost never make comments when turns are sent, so I knew something was going to change.

June 20th 1942

This was a day the Japanese Imperial Navy had high hopes for. The KB had returned to Suva!
The day starts with sweeps over Nadii by landbased followed with the heavies trying to shutdown the airfield. Japanese command had thought it prudent due to the large numbers of holes in the runways to flyout the functioning Zero’s the night before. So there was no resistance over Nadi.

The KB had moved just North of Suva but scout planes only found one transport convoy heading to Suva, the allied Carriers had withdrawn. Only a partial and uncoordinated strike was launched vs this convoy with good effect. We believe we were not spotted, they must have withdrawn to replenish their planes. Weak capitalist!

Royal Navy "Martlet"

A modified version of the U.S. Navy's F4F, the Grumman Model G-36A provided the Royal Navy with its first high-performance single-seat monoplane carrier fighter.

The 100 "Martlet II" and 30 "Martlet III" types had 1,200 horsepower Pratt & Whitney "Twin Wasp" engines, like the American F4Fs. Most "Martlet IIs" also had folding wings. These early "Martlets" had considerable combat service, flying from shore bases and from aircraft carriers.

Over 40 overzealous Nell and Betties take off from Noumea to get in on sinking more capitalist ships, unfortunately they choose Suva which had over 90 fighters on CAP scratch 36 of these birds. Next came 56 zero’s escorting Kates, Vals though the Zero’s shot down over 20 of the enemy fighters they were to numerous and broke into our planes sending many down in flames. Only 8 attack aircraft made attacks no hits.

The ground troops were not happy with the show. [:(]

In all scratch 96 meatball planes to 26 capitalist. Lost 46 pilots KIA and almost all the rest MIA or WIA.

Since that time the KB and American CV’s have disappeared off the radar screen!

The day is not lost as Tokyo Rose has great news from our Army!

Great events here as our forces caught up to the fleeing 18th British division and help it retreat towards Imphal, this force once defended Chittagong, and Cox Bazaar.

The KB shows up 160 miles NE of Auckland to try and catch possibly the retreat of the CV’s what it found was a 2 taskforces and a habor of 45 ships. What it did was not that spectacular.

Spotting 2 taskforces gave me high hopes, one was a small transport group unloading at Auckland the other was an ASW group of 3 DD/PC. Needless to say the KB split its attacks, the one had no cap, the other had all Auckland could afford, unfortunately only 6 zeros accompanied that raid, while ships were sunk at the end of the day we lost close to 40 planes/ 24 pilots to about 20 allied.

B-17D’s escorted by a few aircraft dropped bombs on the carriers none were hit and 4 of the big boy’s did not make it home.

On June 27th the KB withdraws north and a lone destroyer follows, it is attacked by only 5 Vals no hits registered. I like the new aircombat models that don’t give full strikes to a lone destroyer. I don’t like my pilots cannot hit them.

Historical Fact

American President Line
In 1938 the U.S. Government took over the management of the Dollar Steamship Co. which was in financial difficulties and transferred their assets to the newly formed American President Line. The company operated trans-Pacific and round-the-world services, but the war in Europe disrupted services and after the entry of the United States into the war, all the company's ships were taken over for war duties. After the war, only two ships were returned to the round-the-world service and two new ships were built 1947-48 for the trans-Pacific route. Further ships were later added to the fleet, but by 1972 only the PRESIDENT CLEVELAND (2) and PRESIDENT WILSON (2) were sailing as passenger ships and both were withdrawn from service the following year. The company still trades as a cargo company

The month of June is finally over, it went by very fast sorta like Christmas. The allies brought out their new P-38s and Hurricanes which were unimpressive so far. Yet their old P-39’s and P-40’s in great numbers shredded many high quality pilots from the KB.

North Pacific

As can be seen in picture below has been cleared except dots, to Dutch Harbor, we see 9 units 13k troops. The base is port 4, air 0 the bombing campaign has just begun.

Central Pacific

Amazingly for both sides quiet, I had plans here but distractions have delayed, obviously from his side as the South and North have taken precedence.

South Pacific

The allied forces finally try on the 28th to push the Japanese out of Suva. They have brought in 30 units vs our 4, the rest are waiting at Nadii (I have a rotation). The initial assault came off 1 to 2 and defiantly told the allies that the Japanese can inflict blood!

Northern Australia

The Australians are moving up and evicted lead elements of the Japanese army at Daly Waters. Our main forces are chasing the retreating units from Darwin. The main decision on this area should come in July.

India

We have finally pushed the capitalist back to the area around Imphal, with Chittagong finally in hand (or original planned landing) we have two bases to move troops/supplies in. We were worried about the new Hurricanes and P-38E’s but Oscars with vets and Nick vets they handled the new planes. Actually looking at stats and performance, I’m thinking of increasing Nick production, in India I have one Vet unit that can handle the heavy bombers and did well vs P-38’s.

Already updated look up a few post, he moved a unit into Nanning from the coast base. No I never took it, but will this month. He found it occupied and is now on the bombing list.


Overall not a lot was accomplished this month except consolidation of what was rightfully the Co-prosperity sphere. Fiji has turned into a real battle, after his assault he even stopped bombarding, low supply? Complete disruption? Doesn’t matter were there, he’s there it’s a war. We came close to catching the American CV’s but missed by a day, he has just moved surface units back to Tongatupu and probably plans on hitting my forces at Nadii, His CAP trap will make this interesting. I have achieved a 4.1 to 1 advantage but believe I have reached my High watermark, really wanted Fiji and Pago, plus a few others. May get one, but not all and it will hurt. After they allied unsuccessful assault, they stopped all bombarding. We took this opportunity to pull back to Nadii, With his current fort situation it’s a stalemate and I did not want to undergo daily bombardments. He has heavy surface ships at Tongatapu also and these were set to bombard our positions. We have forts at Nadii till reinforcements arrive.

He sends daily bombing runs to keep Nadii’s airfield down like clockwork.

Historical Fact

The 7th Armoured Brigade is a formation of the British Army. The brigade is also known as the 'Desert Rats', a nickname formerly held by the 7th Armoured Division.

The brigade fought in many of the major battles in North Africa, including Operation Crusader in November, fighting at Sidi Rezegh to try to relieve the Commonwealth forces in the port of Tobruk, besieged by Axis forces[1]. The operation was the third attempt by the Allies to break the siege and was successful.

It moved to Burma in early 1942 just as the Japanese were pushing the Allies back. The brigade took part in the fighting retreat to India, successfully completed in May just before the monsoons would have cut them off.

The 7th Armoured returned to the Middle East in 1943, based in Iraq and later Egypt. With Axis forces defeated in North Africa, the brigade's time was a quiet one until it moved to Italy in 1944 where it remained for the duration of the war, fighting as part of the Canadian Corps

Meanwhile in Egypt

On 1 July the First Battle of El Alamein started, but after almost a month of inconclusive fighting both sides, completely exhausted, dug in, halting Rommel's drive eastwards.

More significantly, Rommel only had 13 operational tanks by the time he reached El Alamein. Although he was only a few hundred miles from the Pyramids, he knew he didn't have the resources to push forward. On 3 July, he wrote in his diary that his momentum had "faded away."
