ORIGINAL: khyberbill

I have not seen or read of any serious damage to the resource centers except when they have been evacuated by the Allies. A smart foe will spend most of 42 using his tankers and cargo vessels extracting as much from the DEI that is possible before US fleet boats become more effective. That should limit expansion plans-naturally that has not happened by most JFB's yet, although in one of my PBEMs, we are into 4/43 and my foe wishes he had done that instead of invading Darwin. I sink about 2 ships a day now and that is after the reaction range was reduced to 1.

sinking two ships a day with subs is my long term goal and doesn´t sound impossible at all when I think at all the attacks I´ve seen so far. And your example of 4/43 with two sunk ships a day more or less confirms what I´ve thought about AE after starting my first game, subs will be what will be the war winner for the Allied. In WITP it was the Corsair and 4Es en masse, in AE it IMO will be the submarine.

What is your opponent doing in regards to ASW? I expect mine to train up a lot of his bombers on ASW (or nav search at least - I don´t know how the difference between those two really turns out in AE) and then cover the shipping lanes in the SRA with his (mostly) IJAAF bombers. And of course the use off dedicated ASW TFs along the shipping lanes. In fact not much difference to WITP other than you have to train a certain skill now instead of just ramping up experience. And only 4 ship ASW TFs now. What are you experiencing in terms of countermeasures to your subs in your game at 4/43?

the KV both dropped more than halve their depth charges for two near misses, the two AVDs I had in the TF did nothing... at least the sub was targetting one of my escorts. What I´ve noticed so far is that IJN subs seem to have a hard time to hit my escorts while my MK14 torp equipped subs have no problem to hit escorts all the time (though their torps fail to explode of course). hmmm, must bad luck I guess. 25th Feb will see my first summary of my torp attacks over a month, silly me, I forgot to take notes on the IJN subs, so there will only be Allied torps in the statistics. Will start taking notes on the IJN subs when we enter the second month of the statistics.

mini KB lingers off Java again, the invasion is soon to come... flak is more or less useless, even against low flying Kates. Batavia has three dedicated AA units and halve a dozen base forces... I´m still used to WITP Nikmod flak but am playing with WITP stock flak again so this pretty much strikes me every time I see such attacks...

seems like Rainer is starting (or has long started and I just didn´t notice it) with picking up fuel (or oil) in the SRA. We sink our first IJN tanker... only a small one but it´s a start... took us two months to actually hit one... the tanker was empty so I actually wonder what it did in this base... this is the base North of Tarakan...

this is the Chinese base on the coast, South of Shanghai... I wonder how the Chinese held this outpost in real life. Seems like Rainer has underestimated my "strenght" here and we fend off an IJA attack with only very light losses on our side. What really surprised me was the fact that we got a "leader +". The Chinese have good leaders? [:D] There´s no chance to hold this place though, I´m expecting Rainer to move in reinforcements and only do bombardments until more units arrived... then he will make short process of this base...

while KB was off New Caledonia on it´s way South yesterday we have spotted the IJN carriers going North again today... I expect KB heading back to Truk now. Has been a short raid with limited success (two xAKLs sunk with nav search). Hopefully there´s not that much fuel at Truk but I guess enough to send out KB immedietely again. We´re over two months into the war and KB was more or less all the time at sea... and now halve an hour to reroute my rerouted convoys again... [:(][;)]

RE: AE = Alpine Edition <-> Rainer79 vs. ranting castor troy

Post by khyberbill »

What is your opponent doing in regards to ASW? I expect mine to train up a lot of his bombers on ASW (or nav search at least - I don´t know how the difference between those two really turns out in AE) and then cover the shipping lanes in the SRA with his (mostly) IJAAF bombers. And of course the use off dedicated ASW TFs along the shipping lanes. In fact not much difference to WITP other than you have to train a certain skill now instead of just ramping up experience. And only 4 ship ASW TFs now. What are you experiencing in terms of countermeasures to your subs in your game at 4/43?

One foe moved as much oil and resources the first year as he could and then hid. He concentrated mainly on China and Burma for his expansion and thus was not consuming lots of supply/fuel. One other foe concentrates lots of escorts in one TF with just a few transports in amphibious ops. Slightly gamey, but not unheard of. This has had some success until I kept my subs away from landing zones. The reduction of the reaction range has actually helped here. The third foe has built up his Air ASW and has had some success with Bettys and Nells against my subs. I am losing about one sub a month to his air attacks that are concentrated around Darwin (where my subs are blockading his forces). I am sure he is losing many planes a month to ops though so I am not certain who is winning this battle. Plus I bomb the air field where the planes are coming from each night.

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring xAKL Kailua

an unnecessary attack as once again the UBER naval search routine had alredy killed the ship... once again, a 100% kill rate of ships in range of KB´s nav search...

SS Gudgeon attacking xAK Momoyama Maru on the surface
SS Gudgeon low on gun ammo, Grenfell, E.W. breaks off surface engagement and submerges

and here the completely stupid opposite as an example... Gudgeon fired 20 torps, ALL missed! You can´t be serious. There are a lot of things that can happen, but I doubt a sub ever fired 20 torps at a freighter and all missed... they weren´t even duds, NO, they all MISSED! Tambor made all the way from Brisbane to Japan to fire 20 torps today (4 were launched earlier) and has to move back to Brisbane now... out of torps... [8|] of course the sub also didn´t hit a single time with 90% of it´s available shells for the 3 inch gun. Don´t even want to know how many shells this would have been in real life. But hey, that´s just stupid Castor to find this weird.

Sculpin still operates on the same TF as the last days. Funny thing is that Sculpin has a react range of 1 but has followed this TF over a distance of at least 15 hexes already and the TF surely moves 2 or 3 hexes each day. Means that even with a react range of 1 a sub can steadily follow an enemy TF. Good to know...

and the daily airlosses... we´ve lost again 3 Catalinas to ops and we can´t keep up with our op losses when we only get 17 a month it seems. And then there are those reinforcement squadrons that are coming in without aircraft... a three weeks replacement for each squadron to be filled up, this will never happen I guess and all I can do is to disband squadrons (which I´ve done with three of them already) to bring others up to strenght... once again the difference between WITP and AE I can see is that the losses are the same but the replacements was cut down... 70% nav search with twice as many pilots in the squadrons than aircraft, must be my fault though. Stand them down and you don´t lose them, you will notice KB when it bombs your base anyway...

Group patrol altitude is 10000
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 38 minutes

and the same as all the attacks before, our fighters get again separated from the bombers... same target, same 3 hex range, same alt as the bombers, etc, etc, etc... [8|] why, only the godlike know, those that don´t have to be critiziced... 27 AVG fighters are available, after the attack screwing up again, 13 go in against the Zeroes and the funny thing is that our fighters were at 6000ft but bounced the enemy at 10.000ft. Result is a 3:1 kill rate of the AVG in this case, the "sweep" wins... I bet if I would set my fighters to "sweep", they would arrive AFTER the bombers... as they seem to constantly split up when they fly out of Imphal they "sweep" first... just strange...

but not just the fighter squadron is separated from the bombers, the fighter squadron itselve is split up too... must be some good flying... typical for WWII I guess... what else than a big enough airfield, enough air support, enough supplies, skilled aircrews, good leaders, a HQ and everything at the same alt do I need to get a combined strike? Unfortunetely in AE it is the norm to get everything screwed up when it comes down to air attacks... could it be that it was the norm to NOT see this in real life and it was the exception to see airstrikes being completely messed up? No for sure not, AE is gospel...

and why could I think about seeing A SINGLE strike against Port Moresby that is not being dispersed? 100% of the strikes so far have not been combined... I´m not cheating and am not changing the combat reports. This is what actually HAPPENS in the game and I can´t see a reason why it should look like this all the time... must be hard to form up for four dozen heavy bombers over an airfield when they have ample fuel to reach this target... yet we go in separated EVERYTIME...

and same as yesterday, we lose another three Catalinas to ops... won´t take long and I have yet to disband another squadron to get some patrols into the pool...

perhaps I should also start doing statistics about bomber attacks and how often it happens that the strike goes in as a whole and with fighters (if available). Would be a short summary I guess...

and this is exactly the time when I HATE some of the new "features". Subs leave their patrol zones when being damaged and they auto disband in port then as happened in this case. I wouldn´t be dumb enough to disband those two subs when I know Rainer recons the place more or less daily and his bombers just wait for something to show up. So I didn´t notice the subs being disbanded and they are both hit... O-23 is seriously damaged, S-36 lightly damaged... great...

we only lost 18:0 in A2A due to the Sputnik sweeps... air skill of my Dutch squadrons is in the 60s, wouldn´t call that rookies, considering the max you can get with training is 70. They are shot out of the sky at a rate which is hard to do even in WITP. But hey, one Zero crashed and is an ops. Those that haven´t figured out (must be very few), forget about the altitude bands, even if an alt factor was implemented that hasn´t been there in WITP, in AE it all just comes down to "who can go higher". More about this funny thing of airwar next to Sputnik in a couple of turns that clearly shows the deficiencies of the model in PBEM. You won´t see this against the AI because it won´t send it´s fighters on maximum altitude. Air combat at an alt those WWII fighters could hardly fly straight...[8|] A2A 18:0...

the enemy shock attacks into our base, doesn´t really take a beating from the river crossing. I seriously doubt we´ll be able to hold here against more or less equal enemy av and with level 4 forts... I´m intending to fight for the area around Sian as I see the North with it´s oil as one of the most important in China, therefore the fightings around Chengchow and Loyang should only delay the Japanese and I will try to do a fighting withdrawel. Hoping to not get kicked out as this would render this Army useless. Chengchow and Loyang are both open terrain and level 3 or 4 forts don´t really help so the plan is to defend in the "wooden rough" hexes South of Sian which will give me a far better multiplier than the clear terrain with low forts. We can field some 5000 av in the Sian area but the only hope we have is the terrain...

And here´s the sub attack statistics, started taking notes on 25th Jan. Forgot to take notes on IJN subs but I guess there weren´t more than halve a dozen attacks in the last month anyway. All in all, it doesn´t really look good IMO.

MK14
51 attacks

9 exploding hits (20.93% of total hits)
34 duds (79,07% dud rate of total hits)
8 miss (15.69% miss rate of total salvos)

on the first sight, the dud rate seems to be below the 80% but the 80% is valid for the torps and what I´ve counted here are SALVOS. And out of the 34 DUD SALVOS, many of them had of course more than one torp hit the target. How many I can´t tell as you get no info on this from the game. Anyway, we´re not far off.

MK10
9 attacks

5 exploding hits (83.33% of total hits)
1 dud (16.67.% dud rate of total hits)
3 miss (33.33% miss rate of total salvos)

my feeling was right, my S-class subs have performed poorly. This due to the fact that we only managed to get 9 attacks in a whole month when our S-class subs still had their homeports close to the SRA. So this performance will only get worse as soon as we´ve lost Java I guess. Sending the subs from Brisbane into the Rabaul area results in only very limited time on patrol so the S-class subs will get more and more useless...

53.3cm/45cm/21MkVII
15 attack

4 hits (57.14% of total hits)
3 duds (42.85% of total hits)
8 miss (53.33% of total attacks)

and here´s the completely disappointing performance of our Dutch/British subs. They´ve missed in more than halve of their attacks which is really, really a bad performance. Same goes for the duds, those torps should have a dud rate of 10%. Overall, I can´t say it was a good month for my subs. And the enemy ASW has been by far anything else than useless. We have a couple of subs sunk to depth charge attacks already, with halve a dozen limping home with serious damage, nearly exclusively from IJN DD attacks.

The only good thing at the moment is the fact that all IJN subs seem to be in positions where none of my shipping is going. [:D] With the loss of Java in the coming weeks, our subs will probably do even worse.

next sub that is hit hard... as we are not able to launch an escorted bomber raid out of Imphal, I´ve replaced the bombers with fighters to do a sweep... but don´t you dare to think we could launch a combined sweep... no, a ridicoulos series of small strikes is going in... how crazy is this really when you get 100% of your strikes dispersed all the time? I haven´t been able to fly a SINGLE combined strike out of Townsville with my 4Es nor a SINGLE combined strike out of Imphal... that must be the perfect reflection of what happened in real life, start your engines Gentlemen, as soon as you´re airborne head directly to target and don´t care about the other aircraft in your squadron... yeah... first sweep...

so while I had two squadrons of AVG set to sweep the same target, coming from Imphal at an amazing three hexes, I get 5 sweeps. Granted, both squadrons were on different alts, but would it be too much if at least the two squadrons would come in as combined strikes. And what ridicoulos excuse is it anyway if 300 ft difference in alt of the two squadrons would make the strike split up? Seriously, this is not how it worked in real life. Note also the insane alt I ordered to sweep... max alt for both ac types, especially like the 32k ft for the Airacobras, they are killers at that alt if diving on any enemy compared to fighting at 5.000ft... mhm... 5 Zeroes were lost today for the loss of one AVG aircraft A2A... the Sputnik sweeps work as good for us as they do for the Japanese, they just aren´t any close to reality... but that´s the best way to use them...

Good move. I always send my convoys south of Pago Pago until I have a nice network of search planes established. It only costs a few more days in travel and you gain so much in return.

I guess every single TF of mine is travelling on a different route and all of them are really far away from where KB usually tries to raid. The fact that IJN subs haven´t been a pain the last weeks is probably also due to our longer but far saver routes to Australia. It takes a max of one week longer to use a 99% safe route. Really wondering how far and for how long KB will stay on the scene. 3 months of nonstop operations so far, fuel can´t be an issue for the IJN.

what´s happening here? "Lots" of casualties from unloading... the assault on Java has begun, when we´ve spotted the TFs I´ve expected the invasion to go in at Semarang but they turned to this base further North... not much we can do against the Japanese...

AE airwar stupidity... get the bounce and everything is fine, no matter what man rating... our 70 skilled fighters are shot out of the sky... the battle went on and on like this: Oscar dives and fires from behind, Oscar dives and fires from behind, Oscar dives and fires from behind... boom boom boom...

if you play PBEM and don´t restrict yourselve to trying to play/fight the same way it was done in real life, the game can´t help you to produce realistic outcomes... go in as high as possible when you attack... don´t put up Cap if you defend... the fact that Japanese fighters can go far higher than Allied fighters puts us in a bad situation as the enemy will just keep on bouncing us... outnumbering the enemy, one of those myths... and the funny thing is that exactly the fighter with the worst high alt reputation, the P-39, did not worse than the others, flying at max alt...

more of the stupidity... but hey, post it on the main forum and you will be called idiot, troll or whatever nice they will find for you. It´s the fault of the Japanese player that he uses his fighters at the best possible way and this is 100% clearly max alt sweeps... it´s not the game that is wrong that should make Oscars at 38.000ft or Zeroes at 30.000ft+ completely useless... this kind of battle wasn´t possible in real life, not to talk about seeing the Oscars taking down the Allied fighters in droves... this is just ridicoulos... and for sure you can´t blame the players, especially if they get told on and on that the airroutine is so super duper now and you have to look at the aircraft stats etc... blah blah blah...

but hey, perhaps this combat report is just fake? Yeah, in fact I manipulated it...

oh how I love this stupidity that 60 bombers can´t attack together when they launch from a level 7 airfield... first there was only one Zero, the following strike meets 8 already... March 42 and we have not been able to launch a single combined strike out of Australia or India for the last three months... NOT EVEN ONE! This is the norm and not the exception... and this is for sure not reflecting reality. You can´t create a "your attacks will never work" feature and then say that there are now die rolls for this and that to reflect problems that were happening in real life too. So in four months of the war all ordered attacks were split up in real life? Yeah, sure... am meeting all fridging conditions that we´re told all the time... NOT ONE strike from Australia to New Guinea has gone in combined so far, not even ONE!

air losses of today... we shot down two Oscars during the replay but 7 are now showing up on the air loss list... overestimating what our Cap was able to do, they weren´t able to do anything against the Sputnik Oscar sweeps on 38.000ft... lol, 38.000ft... either the stats (especially UBER maneuverability) or the routine itselve is bullocks...

another 3 heavy bombers lost to 9 Zeroes today... not ineffective Cap so to say.

guess at some point I´m going to use my Chinese biplanes to intervene, but I´m still unsure about it as I don´t want to see hordes of IJA bombers doing round the clock bombing in China as I need every single supply point... the 50.000 supplies I´ve burnt due to the fact that I didn´t realize that there´s damaged industry in China that all is set to repair at the beginning puts me in a completely helpless situation... [8|] like I´ve said before, if you don´t realize this, it can break a major part of this game, as this is what I call China. It´s there and it´s a major part of the game. Better would be to have those things at DO NOT REPAIR when there are damaged sites as a player will learn the hard way... not to talk about the fact that you have to check all the bases...

now and then a kill... small freighter bites the dust... due to the high number of subs, my US fleet subs are the most dangerous to the enemy... even though we scored dozen after dozen duds, the fleet subs still account for the most kills, therefore I can not understand when people are saying they just leave them in port until later in the war...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Mar 03, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 344 encounters mine field at Singapore (50,84)

Allied Ships
SS Sargo, Mine hits 4, on fire, heavy damage

I was told that subs on patrol with a set reaction range do NOT react into spotted minefields or "bigger" ports ... ok, let´s see... while the minefield at Singapore for sure wasn´t spotted until this event, I would call Singapore with it´s level 9 (in words: n i n e) port for sure a "bigger" port... yet my sub reacted into the port while following an enemy TF... mine hit 1... boom... mine hit 2... boom... mine hit 3... boom... mine hit 4... boom... sunk...

I did not set it to move into Singapore and there was no other reason than the sub reacting that cause this "happening"... subs DO react into BIG ports so there seems to be something not to be working as designed, at least not in evil castor´s edition...

KB has been spotted again, now in the Canton Island area... again, no chance to get a shot at any of my convoys within the next four or five days at best... [:D] we don´t get info about carriers when we hover over the TF but as a PBY was shot down over this TF there´s no doubt that this is KB still on it´s raid... so far it was completely useless and I can only hope that fuel costs are high...
