The thing is... to replicate historic results we would have to have incredible amount of coincidence and luck in one game. A slightest deviation from history easily snowballs into complete disaster which then prompts the (Axis) player to blame the game (when he should be blaming himself).

Stop your advance mere one turn too early => by spring 42 you're toast
Fail to complete one or two big encirclements => by spring 42 you're toast

etc you get the idea

Those little failures may not seem like a big deal the moment they happen, indeed sometimes they are unnoticable, but they snowball very fast.

HOWEVER, if the German player plays an almost perfect "insanely aggressive" game there is nothing Sov can do to stop him. In my other two games as Soviet I would not even call myself a "player" I am a mere watcher of the German moves, completely unable to react in any coherent manner.

My next goal is to learn to play "almost perfect insanely aggressive" German opening. And win every game I start [:D]

If the German player is required to play an 'almost perfect insanely aggressive' game in order to achieve historical results in 1942, then I would be looking at the game's design choices and not a player's skill level.

My current fear is that if the German player plays 'almost perfect insanely aggressive game' (APIAG) [:D] Soviet role is reduced to mere watcher, not player. APIAG is required to WIN, To achieve historic results something close to APIAG, but not as perfect, is required.

I still have to perfect my own APIAG to be able to point the finger and blame the design.

IMO in gaming terms there is nothing more frustrating than playing Soviets vs APIAG Axis player (I faced two) - simply nothing sensible to do.

What ACR played here was neither perfect (far from it) nor insane, nor aggressive (in fact it was very meek). Results are seen in this thread - Sovs holding Odessa and Smolensk in spring 42.
