Hi guys, I need advice about the "beast", F4U. What to do with my 150 pool of F4U-1 ? Due to short range, 8hex, I do not need them on Java. They are badly loosing sweeps against N1K1-J, which is the main fighter in my opponent arsenal. For central pacific I like more the F6F-3 with better range, altitude and SR. SR=3 make them very bad choice to fly CAP. So no idea how use those all planes. I am not saying is the bad airframe, just massive use of N1K1 by my opponent make them less useful. Does anyone have good tactic to use them more effectively against N1K1-J ?

They will get drop tanks later, which helps things. Even if they are no longer top dog for sweeps, they are still very strong whether for CAP or escort. As CAP against sweeps, layering always helps and layers of massive numbers is better.

Since the F4U-1 is not carrier capable, use it wherever you have lots of land bases. India/Burma/China theatre comes to mind. As witpqs was suggesting, mixing it in with other fighters like Hurricanes and P-40s would give numbers and altitude coverage.

Corsairs - Since you get so many 18 plane Avenger groups have them be escorts for their bombing runs. A CAP with a high SR rating, I increase the percentage on Rest from 20 to 30% with CAP of 40%. They do alright in this role.

Well I have just one Marines squadron with TBF, and nothing to bomb in range. There is literary "0" Japanese activity around South & Central Pacific.
I will get F4U-1a in 8 days and I still have over 140 F4U-1. Generally my fighters pool are full of fighters in opposition to my bombers pools.
Right now I have 1500 fighters in reserve including 330 2nd generation a/c (Spit V, F4U, F6F, P-38, P-47).

Southwest Pacific HQ: Operation "Bigfoot"

Lightings of 51st and 18th FG swept Balikpapan. Attack was intercepted by 20 N1K1-J and 36 Ki-43-IV. Our losses are 9 P-38G and 8 P-38F for 13 Oscars and 10 Georges. Heavy losses did not prevent my fighters to do job, when several waves of B-24 arrived there was only a few Japanese fighters still airborne and they were to high to intercept my 169 bombers. Result are not spectacular, but 50 oil centers is still nice result.

Southwest Pacific HQ: Operation "Bigfoot"

US Destroyers engaged and sunk PB Shinko Maru #5 and next they fight off Japanese 3 CA and 5 DD lead by Tanaka.
USS Taylor and USS Converse will need 6 - 10 days in shipyard. On other hand destroyer Isonami was sunk and Shikinami will need shipyard.
However I did pushed enemy fleet out of Balikpapan, which is now open for shore bombardments.

Martin already noticed it and moved his fighters to Samarinda airfield. I am observing his LCUs moving to towards Samarinda too.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Balikpapan at 64,97, Range 5,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CA Chikuma

CA Aoba
DD Asashio
DD Arare, Shell hits 1
DD Isonami, Shell hits 2, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
DD Shirayuki
DD Shikinami, Shell hits 1, on fire

Allied Ships
DD Charles Ausburne
DD Bache
DD Bennett
DD Claxton
DD Converse, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Foote
DD Taylor, Shell hits 5, heavy fires

5th USAAF were bombing 143rd IJA Ragiment at Cheribon flying over 400 sorties. 20+ Franks were trying intercept bombers by my escorting P-39 and P-40 did not allowed to do it. 11 fighters were lost but for cost 14 Franks on Japanese side.

Next Armored Combat Team of 6th US Army and 6th AUS Division "Shock attacked" 143rd positions and crashed it. Cheribon is liberated.

Generally recon photos suggest that all Japanese LCUs left on Java are withdrawing to Batavia.
