During the night time near Pagan the following TFs catch sight of each other. Trinity, a survivor of Manila, is clearing making a northern route run. If it had not been for this chance encounter she would have been too far east by the time I would have spotted her. She has a head start but I have hatched a plan to deploy Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu, currently at Truk, to pursue her. Akagi will remain at Truk to repair her sys 5 damage.

Night time at Makaassar and Cl Oi and DD Yugao locate MTB 10 but this quarry eludes my hunters.

At Semarang 4 B-339D and 5 CW-22 Falcon are greeted by 11 Oscar. 2 B-339 are reported destroyed.
Carrier Div 5 has been ordered to move towards Darwin to sniff out what might be lurking there. Enroute the newly arrived CL Sumatra is located at Roti. 13 Val escorted by 17 Zero pay her a visit once the report of the sighting is received. 8 bombs are recorded as hitting the cruiser and the planes leave the scene reporting the ship suffering heavy damage and under a pall of smoke from heavy fires. Oddly enough the intel screen claims that CL Java is sunk this turn instead of Sumatra.
The Nates are still pestering ML No. 423 near Mergui. They score 1 shell hit today.

SS KVII scores 1 torpedo hit on AO Notoro at 55,97 near Sampit. Notoro was fully loaded with fuel from Miri and was en route to provide replenishment for Carrier Div 5. In the meantime fuel will be shipped from Babel to Ambon as a backup supply. The escorts claim 5 hits on the submarine…. Wounded no doubt but I expect to see her harassing me again in the future.

At 78,122 near Bathurst Island Carrier Div 5 runs afoul of SS S-37. She sneaks through the screen of escorts and obtains a single torpedo hit on CVL Ryujo!!!! Fortunately flooding is only 17 and no fires. Ryujo breaks off and heads to Babel before trekking back to the HI for repair. Todd is hopeful that she had significant damage and is too far away from a port. I’m confident she will make it as long as she doesn’t locate more Allied subs. As for S-37… she took 5 hits in return.

Carrier Div 5 catches up with the fleeing ships and launches an attack at 86,129 near Horn Island.

Thoughts on Planning
Now that we are some 7 weeks into the game it is high time I did some talking about where I think I am going with this brute of a game.
I do have a map with my proposed outer boundary and I’ll post that. I’ve already managed to move outside the boundary by capturing Noumea. I know you stick to a plan, however, after the success of my merchant raiders in the South Pacific and the submarine plunder of merchant shipping hot footing it to the U.S. I sensed an opportunity. I like the idea of making it hard to reinforce Australia so when it became apparent that striking further south than the Solomons would be to my benefit I decided to act. I don’t see it as a long term proposition and if I can get it to last until 1943 so much the better. I think that Noumea was part of Todd’s line in the sand last time around. I’m sure he has such a plan for this time around so messing with that early on has to be a good thing.
Up until now I’ve had a fairly clear idea of what I wanted to capture and how I would go about doing that. The Mersing gambit was central to my plans. Singapore has fallen and the army has captured Rangoon and will soon be knocking on the doors of Mandalay. Java is almost within my complete control and the Philippines awaits the destruction of the Allied army holed up in Manila.
I still have most of the major oil production centres to seize but this should happen within the next month.
The enemy has conducted a Sir Robin and concentrated forces in Singapore, Manila and Soerabaja. This massive pull back is at the heart of what I should do next. I know from previous experience that Todd is more than prepared to sit back, absorb the punishment and build his forces into a super juggernaut. So far I’ve done a reasonable job of keeping him off balance and dejected at the stranglehold on shipping attempting to flee from the Philippines. This is all good but what to do now to make life difficult for the western enemies.
The Russian option is one that I find intriguing. I’ve not hinted to Todd but when we started the game I’d already given a deal of thought to the possibility of doing more than simply prodding the bear. Last game we did a fair amount of diplomatic dancing. We’ve already started down that path in this game. For now we have a truce and I think that Todd would be quite happy to keep it that way. I know it is a complete folly to take on the Soviets but they coming anyway and Todd has hinted that Stalin is not to be trusted… I’m inclined to think that acting sooner rather than waiting is the lesser of two evils. Anyway, for the time being it is not a done deal but certainly something I am thinking about. I’m not looking at any earlier than March, when the winter freeze is turned off, or April should I go all out with hostilities.
I’m also contemplating moving on Ceylon supported by a KB foray to eliminate as much of the RN as I can. Again this is outside of my initial planning but with the quick fall of Burma capturing Ceylon will hopefully slow things down on this part of the board.
My initial planning regarding Australia was for an attack on the Darwin axis. I like it but may forgo that and look at capturing the east coast towns in Queensland down to Brisbane as a complement to taking Noumea.
I certainly have my work cut out for myself and a number of interesting, if not downright silly, options to consider. I’m not totally naïve on the perils of such risk taking behaviour but it is after all a game. Todd has said that I’ve been far more aggressive in this game than the last one… may as well continue in that style. Besides we all like to look back a grand venture of daring deeds and hopefully Todd and I will come up with a few stirring tales as we lock horns.

At 93,138 near Cooktown SS I-24 scores 3 shell hits and 2 torpedo hits on xAP Raranga. She is last seen on fire and appearing to dealing with heavy damage. I’d parked I-24 near Cooktown in the hope of some fleeing ships crossing her path… it worked. So far, apart from that torpedo into Ryujo, I’m pleased with the results of the Darwin raid… flushed out some shipping and enough removed from the board to make me happy.
