From the Brisbane Evening Star March 20 1943, in Burma, he lost his inertia and pulled back? [&:] Shouldn't that be that he lost his momentum, his drive, etc?

Here is a site with cartoons from that era:

Then there are these:

Here is what a person posted on this page http://ww2cartoons.org/dec-1941-u-s-declares-war/:
My late father – George Watson – served in the Royal Navy on small US-built lease-lend aircraft carriers. Really only converted merchant ships and not ideal as warships especially in the wild conditions of winter convoys to Artic Russia but vital to protect Allied convoys from U-boat attacks.

Dad was in the United States a number of times during the War, including a period of several months while they were commissioning a ship in Norfolk, Virginia. He always had very fond memories of the friendship and hospitality he and his shipmates received from people in America, especially when they worked on local farms near Raleigh in North Carolina to bring in the crops – sugar cane I think.

One story he told me sums it up pretty well. One snowy winter’s day in 1943, he and a pal were on shore leave in New York when they came across some kids tobogganing on the pavement. They persuaded the kids to let them have a go but hurtled on to to a busy traffic intersection bringing the cars to a sudden halt. Picking themselves up they found a burly Irish-American cop standing over them who sternly asked who they were and what they thought they were doing.

On hearing they were British sailors, the cop gruffly told them that they had to accompany him to the Police Precinct. By now a bit alarmed the two young sailors (only 20 years old) were worried how they could explain being arrested to their ship’s Captain.

At the Precinct, the cop took them up to the desk sergeant and explained what had happened, finishing by saying he was going to take them into Room 22. The sergeant looked at the culprits severely and said “I’ll come with you in case there’s any trouble.”

With a flourish the sergeant threw open the door of Room 22 which turned out to be the precinct social club where a number of off-duty cops were enjoying a beer at the bar.

Several hours later two, by now rather drunk, sailors who had not been allowed to put their hands in their pockets to buy a drink for their hosts were delivered in a squad car back to their ship with the best wishes of the NYPD.

Sorry for the inactivity here, my opponent has had problems fulfilling his various obligations and has seen fit to reduce the
tempo somewhat. I hope it shall pick up again soon.

Hear! Hear!

I am sorry to say that my (Japanese) opponent in this thread has to yield to some unavoidable burdens of RL - and health - so we have
decided to try to get a replacement for him.

If this is of interest to anybody here please read the introduction to this thread to see what it's all about - the regular
issues of the Brisbane Evening Star should also give a good impression on how the campaign has been proceeding.

My opponent (to be replaced) has agreed to cooperate in an eventual switch-over - as would I. I sincerely hope somebody will
stand up to the task or - if they know of any potential clients - give them a heads-up.

I would like to add that the allied side has received a proper bashing so there should be a good possibility for a new player
to get a smooth take-over. But, again, please read the thread introduction.

Regds

The comic book is swapping a shiny new Garand rifle for an older, well used Garand rifle and not what most troops in the Philippines had, the 1903 bolt action Springfield. The B-17 raid against the Haruna sounds almost the same story in which Collen Kelly was shotdown and he was awarded the Medal of Honor for. Your raid had better results that at least all 3 B-17s made it back to base.

To my knowledge only the Philippine Scouts had been given the Garand but quite a few were on their way in ships when the
war started. I'm a great fan of the Garand and has fired a few thousand rounds through it. Oooh, the pling of the empty
cartridge frame leaving the block....[&:]..I was quite impressed by how they pictured this in the movie "The Thin Red Line".

IJN Haruna has been under attack several times in this thread but she has so far proven to be a lucky ship. She almost
survived the war.

I agree with the Garand it was a big advantage to US troops to have it while the vast majority of other nations had bolt action rifles as their basic infantry weapon. We may not have had the best submachinegun or medium machinegun, the M2 was probably the best heavy machinegun, but the Garand did give the individual soldier a big edge in a fire fight.

I understand that the Germans did not like the M2 because when they hid behind brick walls the bullets from the M2s would go through the bricks. That tended to ruin their whole day.
