What it would take is for a prodigy or prodigies to announce: "We've formed Cucumber Designs. We're associated with Henderson Fields/Matrix to produce WitP:AE II, a complete rewrite of the code inspired by the various elements of the game (air/sea/ground war on a great scale) that we love but that has grown long in the tooth from a graphic design/interface standpoint."

If that happened, the interest would be high and a Kickstarter would probably succeed.

I wouldn't be surprised to read such an announcement here someday (but probably not soon) or for some prodigy team working for the sheer love of WWII in the Pacific to do it independently. It's going to happen someday.

Well, I for one wouldn't be surprised either by the topic, but there would be much surprise still if they eventually actually chose to call themselves Cucumber Designs. Best name hands down, though.

Well, we wanted a cool name, right?

Given that the large component of any product update in software is the testing, it might be productive to demonstrate that a significant portion of the AE community is willing to participate by testing any future update.

Heck, you guys are testing the existing game 10 years after it was released and posting results for "discussion"!
That should be proof enough!

Another Matrix title (Revolution under Siege) got an update in the form of a re-release as a Gold Edition, containing a number of fixes and improvements to the original game. I bought both the original and the Gold edition, and IMO it was very worthwhile.

It's absolutely a model I can see applied to AE as well.

We're here because we love this game - for many of us the love affair has lasted a decade or two. If a better version cones along, we'll embrace it. But there's a good chance we'll look back on this decade as the golden years for Pacific War gaming. Great game. Great community. And we're still relatively young (compared, at least, to a decade hence!)

That's pretty much exactly what AE is, the "Admiral's Edition" of War in the Pacific. Snazzier title than "Gold Edition" for a naval wargame, but it was an update with fixes and many, many improvements but built on the same game engine.

What WitP:AE really needs is not more features or function, but a brand new engine that makes use of multiple processors and more modern hardware, and a redesigned UI to make the player's order entry easier and more intuitive.

I am surprise that no one ever bring up, let do this to get this project going. Yes it going to take a lot of efforts to do it. But the original game? That a big IF! And the hardcode will have to be alter and add additional to it if you want this or that.

Or do you guys want a brand new War in the Pacific? Of course will take years to do, depending on how many staffs, supports, man hours as well skills. Not sure how much money they want for this to keep this rolling. For example, Star Citizen took a long time and hellva a lot of money donated to that site. Most fans were unhappy the ways thing went for Star Citizen.

I suppose there will be a healthy dose of Matrix saying "This is what we are willing to do based on the interest/feedback gents" and we will have to live with it. On the other hand, I am OK with that; 100% of 50% scope is better than 0% of 100% of scope to me.

Overall, I would really enjoy some "help" in slogging through all those thousands of units that need orders on December 8th.
To me this translates into:
- better User Interface and ease in recognition and speed of feature usage while giving orders
- a whole slew of automation and "task stacking" tools that allow coordination w/o having to remember everything turn to turn or 7 turns later
- improved player feedback on actions taken in the interface and local repercussions perhaps

I am a bit concerned about whether Matrix/Slitherine can find the right programming folks to pick WITP:AE up and run with it, but I suppose if they are taking this seriously (it sounds like it so far) that they have considered that already?

I'd be happy to be a beta tester for a new WITP:AE or similar game. I'd also be happy to dig into my various books and excel files and fine-tune the US OrBat to historical standards. :-)

I'd also be someone who'd plunk down money for a new edition. I think I said that already, but just in case...

Oh, and instead of Cucumber, I think it should be called Whiskey In The Pub Games. :-)
