1st-9th May 1942


Australia Command

Naval attack on Japanese carriers that planned to attack Melbourne has failed. Enemy knowing the risk withdrew back to Port Augusta. 2 slower Allied destroyers were hit by Japanese bombers and sunk. Third was damaged but survived. Other ships returned intact.


In the same time Royal Navy prepared raid from Melbourne to Busselton, south of Perth. Allied HQ hoped that they will intercept light defended convoy on the way to Port Augusta or they will catch some easy target at Busselton port. US Navy sub was send to port to scout situation there and in the same day there was confirmation. At least one CS ship, transports protected by 2 destroyers and patrol boats detected.

Allied Task Force was lead by CL Dragon and 3 destroyers as escort. Allied commander decided to risk in hope that they will be able to damage transports and CS ship. Unfortunately there was additional surface force, that US submarine didn’t detect.

Damaged CL Dragon is expected at Melbourne in next few days.

In northern Australia two little successes. First. Australian forces recapture Broom and Derby.

Second. Japanese paratroopers of 2nd Raiding Regiment were wiped out by combined Australian and US Forces. Allied troops will now withdraw to the south.

All main forces from Townsville area are at Brisbane now. Only few smaller units acting as rear guard remain there but will move away any day now because there is nothing important left do defend (Charters Tower fall on 4th May)

South of Rockhampton Japanese Tank regiment blocked quickest escape route from north, but other, slower routes are still open.

Japanese forces are moving south to Bundaberg. HQ decided that Australian Cavalry Brigade that saved city at the beginning of Australian Invasion will abandon base and move south. Enemy forces are large and HQ will try to avoid cutting off valuable Allied troops from main bases.

To Sydney arrived big convoy. Fuel, 7th Marine Regiment and 40th Infantry Division arrived. Force will move north to stay as reserve in Brisbane. It looks like that any move against Port Augusta will commit large Allied forces and will create stalemate. Stalmate at Port Augusta will open road for troops from Rockhampton.

More US troops on the way.

Bad news from Kalgoorlie. After many days of fighting allied troops lost the city. This will open railroad from Port Augusta to western Perth region. However Allied troops are blocking this route in middle of desert between Port Augusta and Kalgoorlie.





Java

Japanese Army is preparing to finish campaign here. Intelligence claims that Guards Tank Division arrived on this Island. More planes are bombing Dutch troops. Batavia is still in Allied hands.

Sumatra

Allied scouting force arrived on one of the remote islands west of Sumatra. AV ship will provide support and one Catalina unit will scout region.
Sibolga is still in Allied hands.

Burma

Enemy is preparing offensive against Myitkyina. One brigade is moving through jungle and dirt roads. Allied HQ believes that they will try to capture Katha, important train station between Myitkyina and Shwebo and then they will bring more troops. Allied bombers are bombing Japanese units every day.

10th-18th May 1942

Australia Command North

Victorious Australian Cavalry Brigade repelled Japanese counterattack on Broome. Japan brought additional units, but enemy is to weak to capture base. Unfortunately Japanese Bettie's squadron is bombing Broome every day. On open terrain without fortifications, Australians has no other option then withdraw, because of big losses.

Australia Command East

Japan battleships bombed Bundaberg and wiped out base force stationed there. As Allied HQ informed in last reports, Australian cavalry brigade retreated south. It was wise decision. On 13th May Japanese paratroopers landed in Maryborough between Bundaberg and Brisbane. Australian soldiers moved to Maryborough and drove paratroopers out of town.
In the same time to Bundaberg arrived Japanese infantry division and captured city.

Allied troops are preparing defensive positions at Brisbane and Toowoomba


South West Pacific

Convoy that few days earlier depart from Sydney was detected by Japanese carrier planes. Convoy brought to Australia US infantry, engineers, planes and fuel and now he was returning to US. Convoy protection force consisted of 2 US Navy carriers.
Ships were detected on 12th May by Kate bombers, but there was no Japanese attack.

On next day Port Augusta recon reported that Japanese carriers moved in pursuit to intercept convoy. Allied HQ moved to Tasmania, marine dive bombers with Wildcat escort planes to attack Japanese Pursuit TF. Transport convoy was redirected to New Zealand.

On 14th May attack started. Japanese light carriers that detected convoy at first place, attacked allied transports. US Carriers moved forward and couldn’t protect convoy ships.

Carrier support unable to supply air cover..

Allied convoy was attacked once again by Japanese light carriers. Enemy attacked from maximum range so allies couldn’t retaliate. One bomb hit CV Hornet.

16th May. Another attack from Tasmania ended with disaster. This time enemy CAP was ready and bombers were decimated by Japanese.

On 17th May contact was lost with Japanese big carrier group from Port Augusta. No attack on convoy by light carrier force.

On 17th May once again contact was established with light carrier force. Enemy once again attacked on maximum range. US CAP shot down 25 Torpedo Bombers and 7 Zero planes. US Carriers will continue their course to Pago Pago, but will try to move closer to attack light carrier force that should be weakened by this losses.

18th May. Allied CVs moved closer to enemy on they way to Pago Pago. Unfortunately Japanese commander decided to move his force east and cut off passage for escaping Carriers. At very close range Allied planes attacked Japanese light carrier force. Soon it was clear that Japanese force is not so light… CV Junyo, CVL Ryujo and CVL Zuiho were identified.

According to pilots CV Junyo has sunk. Enemy didn’t retaliate, but losses were so high that allied Task Force must retreat.

Biggest risk is that enemy is at very close range, so he can decide to attack with surface fleet. Also main carrier force was detected near New Zealand. They might move to intercept US Carriers. Situation might easy change from victory to defeat.

Zuiho should sink, the DD Suresushio should as well. The Junyo may not have been sunk and may not sink. Keep an eye on any Ground losses the enemy suffers. Move any subs in to interdict the trip to the nearest Japanese base.

I saw 30 Val's and 16 Zero destroyed on ground in Air losses report. Also 1 Kate B5N1 and 1 B5N2. If I add this to Kate losses from day before it might be Junyo. Or he could move Vals to one of CVL's, but why Kate losses then...

The Vals would be from the Junyo. Two different Kates for two different groups. It then looks like the Junyo and the Zuiho both became fish homes.

19th-22nd May 1942


Australia Command

Allied Carrier Task Force successfully avoided surface risk and Japanese pursuit. Unfortunately they used almost all of its fuel. So replenishment tankers were sent to meet with carriers.
Enemy didn’t detect Task Force, but Japanese CV group is already east of New Zealand.

Allied HQ moved to Auckland few Light Crusiers and destroyers in hope that enemy will think that allied carriers moved south under protection of friendly CAP. As was expected, spotters of Task Force Decoy detected Japanese Torpedo Bombers. If Japanese Carriers will not catch bait and move east, there will be no rescue for US Carrier Group.

On next day (20th May) once again no contact with enemy carriers. From Suva Surface task force was sent. Main task? Protect carriers and share fuel with them.

21st May. No luck. Enemy detected carriers. Bombing raid begin and both Hornet and Yorktown were damaged.
Also on this day Japan clearly state their intentions.
Almost 100 planes sweeped Suva on Fiji. Enemy lost around 50 machines, but also damaged lots of allied planes.
Also transport group was detected near New Zealand. Their target might be New Zealand itself or Raul Island, connection between Fiji/Pago-Pago and New Zealand.


With knowledge that enemy is focusing naval and air effort on Fiji little counterattack on Port Augusta was prepared. B-17’s bombed Port Augusta, port facilities

Damaged Allied Carriers are moving east to meet with Replenishment Task Force at Top Secret location. Surface Task Force that arrived from Suva got orders to intercept Japanese Carrier Group (nicknamed Task Force Locutus). Unfortunately they moved as close as 46 miles from enemy, but didn’t attack them and by day they were wiped out by enemy bombers.

23rd-31st May 1942


Fiji

23rd May were quite peaceful for US Navy Carriers. They were heading east while Japanese force searched them on the way to Pago-Pago and later to New Zealand. Obviously, Japanese fighters were fighting battle for Fiji but every day brought more and more losses for them. May might bring biggest losses of Japanese fighters since beginning of war. Allied fighter losses might be smaller, but damaged planes numbers were higher every day so Suva might be open for Japanese bombers soon. In next days more fighters were brought to help Fiji defenders, but enemy numbers also grow stronger. At 31st May first A6M5 fighter was seen above Suva base.

Unfortunately on 24th May fire on Hornet that seemed to be under control grow stronger. It create lots of system damage and additionally floating damage increased. So after brave fight of damage crews Hornet sunk.



Only good news for Allied side is that on 31st May transports with Marine regiment arrived to Suva. This will help to recreate 2nd Marine Division on island.





Australia Command – North

Australian Cav Regiment left Broome to enemies hands. Under heavy bombardment they will withdraw south. But there are good news in all of this tragedy. 2 transports with supplies arrived to Darwin. Betty bombers were so busy bombing troops that they missed ships under their nose.



Australia Command – South

IJA around Port Augusta is increasing size of their defense perimeter. Scouting unit near Broken Hill will be bombed by 4E bombers.
B-17 bombers bombed Port Augusta. According to reports at least 2 AKE ships might sunk.
Also allied airforce prepared sweeping raids against Port Augusta. Effects were mediocre. New plane Ki-44-IIa Tojo was seen over Port Augusta



Burma & Sumatra

Sumatran scouting mission on one of remote Island brought it’s first fruit. Dutch flying boats detected small tanker convoy at Medan. Royal Navy send her CV ships and unprotected Japanese ships sunk. I hope that this risk will force Japan to move few squadrons from reserve or Australia to Sumatra.

Burma

Allied HQ increased activity over Burma. Constant fighters sweep attacks, Royal Navy carrier raids are conducted to pressure Japan to increase presence in region and weaken other zones. First signs of increased Japanese presence are already visible. Japanese patrol planes are covering almost all north part of Burma coast. Also additional squadrons of enemy fighters were deployed.

On land, Japanese units moved to roads around Ramree Island. Japanese Imperial Guards Division was identified just east of Allied base. East African Brigade was send there to support defense.

Java

Batavia and Bandoeng are still in Dutch hands in spite of few deliberate attacks against Bandoeng.



Australia Command

Just after successful sneaking supplies to Darwin, Japan like in Burma increased her naval search effort. 3 ships that were on route to Cape Town were sink by planes or surface naval Task Force.

Port Augusta CAP is weaker then before. Only few IJA squadrons are protecting port. Series of sweep attacks put enemy in vulnerable position. Few AKE ships were sunk or heavy damaged in port. Australians will keep pressure.

Two Japanese divisions that moved against Broken Hill were bombed by air force. Enemy decided not to attack this position and moves back to Port Augusta.

Fiji

As was expected Japan invaded Fiji. Japanese troops landed in Nadi. At least 6 transport ships were heavy damaged by coastal defense artillery. Enemy had problems with Allied fighter cover in Suva, but unfortunately few Japanese battleships bombed airbase and closed it. Allied defenders hold at Nadi for a week until finally they were forced to withdraw to Suva.

The Nadi combat was a disaster for the Allies - which appear to have lost all their tanks while the Japanese lost a lot fewer. Disablements recover quickly if the enemy has supply, so that part of the Japanese casualties can be discounted. Looks grim for the Allies to me.

I'm optimistic and I hope that I will be able to fight a little...

Got it now. You did not mention ship losses when you posted that last comment about Nadi, and the prospects for the land battle there do not look very good. But you can't play this game without hope, so keep thinking positive and pass the ammunition (and reinforcements). [:)]

More soldiers and supplies arrives to Ramree Island.
Japanese Naval Task Force arrived to Rangoon and later attacked convoy ar Ramree Island. 2 AK ships and one small escort ship were sunk.

Allied HQ decided to hunt down Japanese force. They moved British Carrier group near Rangoon and provided direct battleships protection for another bigger convoy.
Unfortunately enemy task force was detected at Rangoon itself under protection of Zero fighters. Despite of all odds, without fighter escort Allied planes attacked enemy. Almost 40 planes were shot down. No enemy losses. Carrier group will withdraw to base.

Just after Allied HQ announced that they get through air defenses of Port Augusta, enemy moved more planes there and started air counter offensive. At first Japanese battleships bombed Adelaide base. After that sweep raids and bomber attacks, they closed base. On next day similar move was made against Broken Hill base (but without battleships).

North west from Port Augusta, Japanese forces attacked troops returning from Perth Region that blocked rail road Perth-Port Augusta.
Thanks to quick bombers response enemy was beaten back

After Japanese air counteroffensive, Japanese planes attacked allied troops. Big losses were inflicted.


Ill attempt to attack Rockhampton was prepared. Allied cruisers and destroyers moved north from Sydney. Enemy detected them and send Val bombers, but CAP destroyed almost 20 planes. Allied ships wasn’t damaged as enemy attacked using 60kg bombs.

On next night ships moved to Rockhampton. 2 naval TF’s were detected.
