I think the typical kill range for WW2 a to a is something like 400m or less. But again it depends on the gun. The 30mms had to close to something like 150m to have a decent chance of hitting even a B-17; the 20mms were somewhat better.

Sorry I do not recall the issue off hand. I'll remember to look it up for you; it's just a matter of pulling the thing off my shelf. I remember the article pretty well because I was thinking specifically about the round that I'd need to hunt elk. The answer came up .30-06. There may be a similar comparison available on one of the "articles" posted on Chuck Hawks' web site (www.chuckhawks.com).

I'm new to hunting out west. All my previous exp was in Maine. Given the undulating terrain and the piles of tops everywhere, a very long shot even in a cutting was around 250 yards.

Hunting in CO...Think lots and lots of open scrub at altitude, last Elk shot was coming to me in an area I could see between 1/2 and 1mile, and treeline at about 75yds. my "blind was a sage brush under one meter.. and with all that blastingly bright orange in Colorado, you do want it as people are always getting shot at.. stupid hunters drinking mostly, some buck fever. range to target measured the next day with range finder apx 145yds. Felt like 40

back to witp.. the under the wing add on cannon the germans used.. are those 30mm?
hard to elieve an average range over 200 meters.. that would mean shots in the 600's to balance out the close in shots.. ok kill range vs typical range.. what do you think a typical range would be?

It was Petersen's Hunting (not American Hunter), Dec 03/Jan 04 issue, pp.42-43. Author Rick Jamison. He wasn't making recommendations in particular, just pointing out that the down range performances do not differ alot unless you go to a different action (standard, magnum, short, or [gawds] super short) cartridge. The .30-06 and .300wm are considered standard action cartridges.
