RE: Build 100 - New Screen Shots

Post by Mr.Frag »

Note there currently is room for one more button on the Display Tool Bar and we hope to fill that with a filter for the messages that are displayed on map - ie Flash, Urgent and Routine.

Please add a 4th choice - None ... While I don't ignore Urgent, I generally already *know* I'm getting mauled somewhere and the message is like someone screaming in my ear while I am already trying to fix the nightmare. It is a distraction, not a help. Coupled with order delays, it's the old, "yea, we know already, now shut up and die like men!" [:D]

Dave, the tool tip rollover in that last screen shot:

What are the meanings of the % numbers?

Foot and Mot refer to the movement modifiers for foot and motorised units. These are expressed as apercentage of the full move rate which you get on highways. Note that in the example there is a minor road present, though a minor road in Greece 1941 is not the same as minor road in Holland in 1944[;)].

Direct Hit and Area Hit refer to the hit effects modifiers for direct and area fire. A 30% hit effect would mean that ignoring all other factors ( such as deployment, hight, visibility etc ) you had a 30% chance of hitting the target at that location.

Message Log and Filters for Side

Post by Arjuna »

Hi all,

The screenshot below shows two ways to view the reports dispatched to you by your men. The "Msg" tab in the side data lists all the messages you've recieved so far. By the end of the game you can imagine this gets pretty big. Below it are 3 toggle buttons to view any combination of Flash, Urgent or Routine messages (or none if they are all toggled off). Shown are routine and urgent messages only.

On the display toolbar to the right of the intel filter, you'll see a new message filter button, currently set to Flash. This works in much the same the manner as the message tab except the filters are hierarchical, for example the routine will show routine messages, urgent and flash, whereas the urgent filter will show urgent and flash. You'll be happy to know there is also a None filter for when the Commander has taken leave from the battlefield in his vacation house and doesn't wish to be bothered.

Next to the message filter on the display toolbar you can see the view toggle buttons. These have appeared in earlier screenshots, but in case you are curious about their meaing: Grid, Units, Eliminated Units, Objectives and Tasks.

On the left on the orders tab you can see the Airstrike now shows the minimum and maximum times remaining for airstrikes. The times are the same here because we only have one available airstrike but the min and max times will vary if you several airstrikes as each has its own window of opportunity.

Since we got such a clamouring for more icons to differentiate the type of equipment, we've done just that. Check out the attached screendumps.

Holly Shit !
What I asked (with countless others, I know [8|]) "a long time ago..." on BF.C forum is now reality !

And the new interface seems very usable, though there is now a hundred times more info on screen.

Many thanks for that guys ! I can't wait to try that in game !

Keep up with the good work and ... whip the beta-tester !

Nice work Dave & Adam. The new UI is looking very swish and provides a lot more useful info to the player without adding much complexity.

Sorry if I'm missing something with the new unit icons: all I see is a seperate icon for the light and medium tank types? (A boo to the first pedant to point out there's a seperate icon for fuel, supplies, trucks...[:'(]).

Most interesting is the icon for the motorcycles (w/ an w/o sidecar [;)])

I noticed the same thing Andrew. I would have loved to have seen an American soldier in a foreign country try to get a motorcycle by showing a picture of a truck. [:D]

Arjuna its great so far, but with just a few more it would really be the business. A motorcycle is a start.

It's been said before, but I can't help saying it again; the more I see of CotA the more I realise Panther Games have set a new standard in wargaming. HttR is, IMHO, the best wargame to ever see the light of day and CotA is set to expand on that. Once you guys turn your eyes towards the East, I'll reach gaming Nirvana. [:D]

Considering that all vehicules (incl. tanks) used to be represented by a standard truck, it's a nice improvement (though not revolutionary, I reckon). Supplies icons are the same as in HttR.

Now if half-tracks and mortars have thier icon, it might be close to perfect.
Motorcyles, horses and kitchens would be nice as well. [;)]

There is always something more ...

Watching and waiting.......so impressive. I've said it before, but I've got to say it again, this is the future of wargaming, ...cutting edge.....my compensation awaits to be transferred to the Panther guys.

Thanks and keep up the great work.

We do represent half-tracks, armoured cars and moratars separately. We just didn't have time to grab all the necessary unit displays to show these. Motorcycles will have to wait for now. Unless someone else can draw me one. My eyes are too tired for that at the moment. [;)]

....or, if you are into congnitive therapy:

"Decisive Defeat:

Hey - just because you let the AI destroy three of your armored tank brigades doesn't make you a bad person. Sometimes you let the AI only destroy one and a half, which is really really good. You just need a little more practice. Go eat some ice cream!"
