RE: Bacon Mod
Windows Defender smart screen will pick it up as malicious code but there should be an option to run anyways. If there isn't there are other options to try like exclusions in windows security settings.

Save issues are usually due to anti-virus. Make sure the exe has permission to write to the save directory. Even if you gave it permission before you might need to again since each version of the exe will have a different signature. I had to do that when I switched back in the vanilla exe for testing.
Could you expand on how to do this? I'm more of a Linux guy, this doesn't seem straight forward to me in Windows. File permissions for all users on my save dir (and its parent dirs) are wide open.
Find which anti virus program you are using and there should be a permissions or exceptions section. Make sure the exe is listed there. Maybe an internet search on your specific anti virus would show how to do it.

Gotcha, I have Windows Defender (because it's a PITA to remove); I already have the DW install directory whitelisted. Do I also need to whitelist the save game directory?

Couldn't hurt rollhax.
1.81r is rock solid and steady. I even forgot to save game for a day and a half. That should say something.
For the last few months the game has sucked me back in. So much so I'll be updating RetreatUE soon with some tweaks and changes. I'm sure a couple people still play, right?

RE: Bacon Mod
Retreat1970 your mod with the Bacon mod is what kept me playing DW while patiently waiting for DW2. Thank you both for your hard work.

Retreat1970: definitely a huge fan of your Retreat mod. Same as DonH58, it allows me to scratch that itch while waiting for DW2.
Adding a folder exclusion to my save game folder seems to have worked, I was able to save a game. I'll try play on this one as my main for a while and report back.
EDIT: one minor thing I'm noticing is that all pop-up dialogs (e.g. save game, "are you sure you wish to exit", etc.) are popping up in the background with Bacon 1.81r. Minor annoyance, but perhaps something that can be fixed?

RE: Bacon Mod
I installed it according to the instructions. But when I press "play distant universe" or start the .exe nothing happens except for a popup "bacon mod by roger bacon"
I tried the "2004" version and to disable the starting video.

Do you have windows 2004?
Also, check task manager as you will most likely find distant worlds is running in the background and needs to be canceled.
When cancelled, if you have windows 10 2004 try the 2004 version of the file again.

RE: Bacon Mod
I do not know I if have that windows version. I just tried both .exe in case. Both did not start.
I also checked if anything runs in the background. But it does not start.
I played bacon mod in the past (2 years ago). SO I know it should work on my machine. Maybe it is an issue with the new patch?

No I don't get that option. Can't seem to find exclusion options in windows security. Oh well maybe the next update will fix these issues...

Go to Windows Security > Virus and Threat Protection Settings > Exclusions
Try turning off Controlled Folder Access too.

The link to the latest version is dead.
Maybe it was intermittent because I just downloaded the 1.81 and 1.81r and they both worked.

Looks like the main file is working but not the one for the 2004 update .exe.
