RE: Turkey shot at Rossel island

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Yes, I am using VRF squadrons on board CVEs; they had been very useful in all the campaigns so far:

- Bogue class: Each CVE of this class (I have 4... a lot more to come) is carrying one, 28-plane fighter (VRF) squadron; they are always together working CV escort TFs, always doing localized CAP (100% cap, zero range). This TF will normally follow a "valuable" target. Right now it is on Rossel island, covering the invasion. During the carrier battle at Coral Sea a few months ago, they were in the same hex as the fleet carriers when KB appeared, I am sure that the additional muscle of 112 Wilcats on CAP was critical in that victory (I didn't lose a single carrier back then).

- Sangamon class: the 3 Sangamons are the Allied version of "mini-KB". They are carrying their own integral squadrons of Wildcats (21 planes) and Avengers(12 planes). Right now I have CV Victorious with them. I think that as long as I keep them close to "Allied" seas, they can work as CVLs

- CVE Long Island: Too small in my view to be with the Bogues, I have this carrier normally alone, doing naval search/ ASW; with one Marine dive bomber squadron (18 planes). It will normally follow BBs or the Bogue class TF or whoever needs additional ASW/ nav search assets

Japan lost ~300 planes in the last 4 turns

CVE torpedoed, Rossel captured

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

The IJN silent service took the initiative last turn, and I-169 put a torpedo on Nassau. Damage is surprisingly light: 13 sys, 22(13) float, so it won't even get its own escort TF. but both Nassau and Altamaha will withdraw to Sydney for repairs.

The good news is that Rossel fell on the 1st attempt; which means I can now safely withdraw the CVEs since army pursuit squadrons will cover it.

I also sent a SCTF to bombard Milne bay, this to keep closing all airfields close to Rossel. Results are good as you can see from the combat report

Other than that, bombing of Pt Moresby and sweeping of Milne continues. Tomorrow I should be closing Moresby and another SCTF will bombard Milne, and more P-38s will sweep, then afterwards, the bombing will start, once again until Milne is also closed

Then the next phase of the offensive: Tabiteau
I have an amphibious TF aiming there, still not detected, but most likely tomorrow it will... will see how this ends, this will be my 1st ever atoll assault

In other important news; the 1st convoy (26 ships) arrived to Darwin, increasing supply to 130K

This means that in a couple turns, the air offensive in the DEI will start... 475 bombers getting ready...

Yes
the plan is on stages:
First: (these already in execution)
- Fix supply issues at Darwin, concentrate forces there for potential push forward. Supply is not that bad now, fuel is a concern, but I don't want to send AOs/ TKs yet as I had bad experiences. For the short term fleets will refuel, slowly at Normanton
- Consolidate Rossel, invade Tabiteau, this is basically to keep Japan at close range, so that I can use assets that are idle, also will help in degrading general Japanese capabilities (like for example the destruction of +300 fighters achieved in the last few turns)

Second: (these to start in the next few days)
- Start a bombing campaign against all bases in range of Darwin; that means Dili, Saumlaki, Koepang and a few smaller ones... get them at 100% damage
- Secure Australia NE corridor: which means invade Horn island, Pt Moresby and some other small bases like Terapo and Merauke . The idea is to put CAP bases so that I can safely move TFs to Darwin with less of a concern about LBAs mauling my xAKs and TKs. Also, places well defended like Moresby, don't need to fall, just by having fighting is enough deterrence to avoid using it as LBA base

Third: (these to start sometime next month)
- Multiple invasions in DEI.. There are so many places to invade! I can pick multiple objectives, some might fail, but overall I will prevail in a few ones. Key is to grab some interesting bases in places like the Banda sea or the Celebes. For this I will probably need all the navy and I will most likely incur in heavy losses... BUT, if I can secure the Celebes, then it is the beginning of the end of oil for Japan. Tarakan, Balikpapan, Soerabaja all in 4E range. Moreover, put me in a good position to think about an assault on Java as 4th phase. If I can get Java, then Palembang oil is done, and I get good ports and a repair shipyard,

This is Tabiteau:
I have the invasion TF on "do not unload"; with some luck it will end next turn on target (so then next turn it will disembark in 3 phases)

I don't know if DL=4 will give him a hint of invasion; I mean in this area it is not unusual for Japanese patrols to spot cargo convoys, although moving north should be suspicious

Image

In other news:
- CAP trap!!! British eastern fleet was very bored, so I decided to do some recon in force near Pt Blair. Results were excellent, several Kates and a few Judys trying to hit CAs jump into a CAP trap (Hermes). 58 losses according to FOW report... regardless of how many he lost, it is good to keep eliminating very hard to replace TB pilots. More so when we consider how easy is to shuffle pilots from one theater to another

- Rossel island's Japanese garrison wiped out

Mar21, 43 Tabiteau and Koepang

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Good news in 2 fronts:

- Tabiteau was captured, on a 1st attempt shock attack (atoll). Loses minimal, one enemy nav guard destroyed

- Koepang: first mass strike put severe Japanese aircraft losses and 59 points of airfield damage (Koepang is level 7)

Also

- a turn ago, LBA attacked and almost sank CA Astoria and DD Reid. They might survive if they reach Rossel island next turn (1 hex left). But they are for practical purposes out of the war, until maybe late this year or next one

After months and weeks of almost paralysis, the game is once again "hot"

A little background:
- I decided that I need to control the Torres strait before I tried anything on the DEI, the obvious candidate was Horn Island to start, but I also had 1st Aus Para battalion 100% prepared for Terapo, hence I tried to do a surprise invasion there while the focus was on Horn.

- Up til last turn everything was happiness, 2 turns ago, his Naval attack tried and failed miserably to hit my covering CVEs, with dozens of A6M5s and Judys shot down against nothing to show. 1 turn ago, there was no naval attacks at all.. this is when TF Terapo reached its surprise destination and unload all troops (1 Para Battalion). I made the mistake here of not ordering it back, I thought I needed more supply, and Terapo is out of air supply range.

- So this turn he literally threw the kitchen sink... if you want to count, see the combat reports:
but notice the poor accuracy achieved.. I bet these are all green pilots.. in all, one battleship torpedoed (relatively minor damage) and 2 heavy cruisers bombed but not really at risk

Post by IdahoNYer »

Great to see this AAR back!

Looks like you got very lucky - why in the world are his Judys and Vals level bombing from 9000ft and not dive bombing????? I can't fathom that...

Terapo is a hornets nest - too many mutually supporting Jpn AFs on the north side of New Guinea. Merauke is great - once established you can sweep his northern NG bases and range anti shipping strikes across the island as well. And with Rossel in your hands, you don't need Terapo - once its built up anyway. You'll be able to interdict shipping to the Buna/Moresby/Milne.

With Horn, you have transit through the Torrez Straits. Is Moresby still a threat? If so, your 4E are enroute from Burma, right?

You're in great shape!

Poor weather but I bet the old (already gone) veterans would still had sunk a few ships

Terapo is definitively a hornets nest... but I wanted to grab it by surprise... what a coup it could had been.. I guess it was not to be.
Moresby and Milne were at or near 100% airfield damage; gone for all purposes, at least as long as I keep bombing from time to time. Same goes for Woodlark. His LBAs are at Buna, Lae and Nazdab and there is very little I can do to hit them... still too far away from Allied bases.

The 4E.. or better to say, the entire USAAF forces are in the Pacific/ Australia now... Darwin has 295 heavies, 194 mediums. Townsville-Cairns-Cooktown = 64 heavies, 111 mediums. More at Sydney, getting ready.

Darwin's focus had been Koepang, Saumlaki and lately Boela, Babo oil

IJN carriers lost their aim

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Today what was supposed to be a Japanese happy day ended in total fiasco.

I was actually expecting the surviving carriers to come eventually, and this turn they did... as also multiple waves of Zeros from Hollandia.

But no hits... once again, Japanese aim was horrendous... which is actually worrisome for the continuance of this game.. my opponent is NOT happy and that can have consequences...

Can you spot anything wrong? I already pointed him out the fact of 9,000 feet is carpet, not dive, bombing
of course this turn we can also add the simple fact that cruisers and DDs have an easier time dodging torpedoes

The aim of Japanese bombers is so bad, that as you can see below, I have started doing teasing raids near Pt Blair with Hermes + British cruisers to kill LBAs with CAP and AA

He's got to be outside the altitude window for dive bombing. He seems to be consistent dropping eggs at 9000 so of course he's missing.

Apr 4, old British BBs survive dance of death

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

While Merauke landings continue, and more important, POW and Quincy withdrew, the old British battlewagons Revenge and Resolution moved north to attempt to strike the enemy carriers (again assuming he was going to pursue).

He didn't. Instead I was hailed by Kai-Eilanden's LBAs:
- AM phase, they sank poor CL Sumatra
- PM phase, they were close, but failed

This Kai-Eilanden base has been a torn in my side for too long, I haven't post it, but for the last few days I had been sending sweep missions, but since only P-38s are in range, it had been costly.
This is why I have decided to send the battleships to bombard, probably dooming them to fight without ammo if PresterJohn decides to send his own battleships to intercept

After the battleship bombardment, all P-38s and all Darwin's bombing force (400 bombers, give or take) will strike to close that airbase... the last one really, all others bases in range are already neutralized

Great, I expect this is what is going to happen in my game against IdahoNYer, once has recaptured Darwin [:(].

1st capture Darwin, then bring supply and construction battalions in huge numbers... not easy because the need to run the gauntlet vs. lots of potential LBA bases in range, plus the big question mark of where is KB?

this was done after KB was defeated/ neutralized... with an intact KB, I don't think I would had risk sending the carriers into Timor seas... too easy to fall into a trap
