North Pacific: Jap recon flight over Attu, second day of Jap air attacks on airfield facilties on Attu. AAR follows.

This and other developments in the North Pacific continue to be watched closely for their impact on planning for Operation Bulldog. Recent detected Jap activity is indicating Pillager could be building up Japanese defenses along the northern flank. Preparations are still underway, however, it may be feasible U.S. preparations in the north can be converted to a decoy operation in the event the actual execution of Operation Bulldog is cancelled. For the moment, preparations continue.

Just caught up with last few days posts.
 
I think the move of USN CVs to Raratonga in order to catch KB is a serious mistake because:
 
(a) any probable action will be outside of Allied LBA range,
 
(b) it is difficult to locate enemy CVs in that region and consequently Allied naval assets are being drawn out of position from the vital area = Samoa
 
(c) suppression of enemy air strikes against Pago Pago is far more important than chasing after rabbits
 
(d) Savaii remains vulnerable (due to lack of supplies) to a Japanese counter landing and Japanese reinforcements can be landed on Upololu whilst Pago Pago airbase remains suppressed and Allied CVs are either sunk or merely out of position/sortie damaged from chasing rabbits

Thoroughly agree with your points. I am behind in posting AAR's - carriers have already been turned back to Penhryn. There has been no further sightings or contact with the KB, I've dispatched several lone transports into the area from east (Papaete) and west (Wellington) and neither has any reported contacts. I also had PBM's flying naval search from from Rarotonga and bases in NZ (north island) - none of these planes picked up any contacts.

I made the move on the premise Pillager had either moved the KB into a vulnerable position (expending its air ops to attack dispersed transports) or made some other mistake with it that would result in a favorable attack opportunity. I had no plans to move the carrier force beyond Rarotonga unless the KB's location and disposition was known, and a favorable attack opportunity had presented itself - neither of which happened.

Recent activity over Attu Is is making it quite clear that Pillager is not ignoring the Japanese northern flank. While there is no solid information indicating a large-scale Japanese build-up in the Kuriles and Sakhalin, or any indication that the Japanese have detected ship movements (into Adak Is) that are underway in preparation for Operation Bulldog, serious thought now has to be given as to whether a U.S. offensive in the North Pacific remains feasible.

Known Japanese forces recently arriving in this area include one LCU (1 Mortar Rgt) and a modest number of planes transferred to Paramushiro. What is not known is whether and (if so) how much the Japanese have reinforced other bases in the Kuriles and Sakhalin area. Pillager's options in obtaining LCU's to reinforce the northern area are somewhat limited. Intel has repeatedly shown he has already transferred most of the Kwantung Army units he can remove from Manchuria/Korea southward to garrison Pacific bases. A more likely source of Japanese LCU reinforcements for the north would be from elsewhere in the Japanese home islands area plus Jap LCU's entering the game as reinforcements in Japan proper.


Central Pacific: U.S. subs off the Japanese home islands report light Jap air patrols; no detected air activity near Kwajalein, Truk, or Canton Is area. No reported contacts in any of the above locations between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships or ASW.

Jap AP Aki Maru torpedoed near Tokyo by SS Drum on 1/7 is confirmed sunk.

I notice that you seem to be recently flying your B-25s against Daly Waters at only 100 feet.
 
Others are much better qualified than me to comment on aircraft altitudes but it seems to me that 100 feet for bombers on ground attack is too low.  At that height I would expect you to be fully exposed to enemy AA and suffer widespread damage, thereby limiting the number of bombers actually able to arrive over the target to deliver their payload and affecting aircraft maintenance turnaround times.  To me this seems to explain why the caualties inflicted on the IJA 2nd Div and 14th Tank Rgt were so light.
