Summary of Operations 1/17/44

U.S. escort carrier forces have been formed again for the first time since the initial Pago Pago invasion. Two CVE TF's with a total of eight CVE's plus escorts are formed and available for employment. Five other CVE's are in shipyards on the U.S. west coast repairing minor system damage - CVE's entering the game as reinforcements have been arriving in the game with a small amount of system damage, this damage being repaired before they're sent out from the U.S. Most of the CVE's now available have entered the game as reinforcements since the initial Pago Pago invasion, only three of the 10 CVE's used in the initial Pago Pago remain (the other seven being sunk). One of these three CVE's is still repairing damage received at Pago Pago. The CVE force excludes the Long Island which is operating specifically as an aircraft transport separate from the escort carrier force.

Summary of Operations 1/18/44

North Pacific: All sectors reporting quiet. I've been watching the Kurile Islands area on game map each game turn for any detected Jap activity that could be evidence of a possible build-up of Japanese defenses in the Northern area. It is beginning to appear that Pillager may be doing a very gradual Japanese build-up in the north. So far the information on this is limited to detected Jap activity at Paramushiro and more recently to the two islands in the Kurile chain (Onnekotan Jima & Ketoi Jima) immediately to the south of Paramushiro. At this time, I'm reluctant to send "active" U.S. recon into the Kuriles as this action would give a strong indication to Pillager that I'm planning (or at least seriously considering) a U.S. offensive in the north.

This development is relevent for determining a final "go, no-go" status on Operation Bulldog. If what I'm seeing is true, Pillager has 2-3 months to build up Japanese defenses in the north before Operation Bulldog can even be launched. On the other hand, a Japanese build-up in the Kuriles would make Operation Bulldog useful as a decoy between now and 4/44, especially if U.S. forces are rapidly shifted southward against other objectives.

Summary of Operations 1/22/44 - continued.

Australia: Jap recon flight over Coen. Otherwise quiet in NE Australia.

Detected status of Jap bases in Portland Roads and Port Moresby indicating no activity or change in Jap forces.

Stalingrad in the Outback

Australian tanks bypass Daly Waters, cut the railroad between Daly Waters and Darwin. Primary supply lines are now broken to the 16 Japanese LCU's that remain in Daly Waters. Several additional Australian LCU's are also bypassing Daly Waters behind the tanks that reached and cut the rail line to Darwin. Plans are to launch an advance to capture Katherine as soon as these LCU reach the rail line N of Daly Waters. The Japanese forces contained in Daly Waters represent nearly all the known available Jap "combat" LCU's in NW Australia - the known Jap LCU's in Darwin almost entirely made up of "non-combat" units including base forces, flak, and engineers.

My plan at Daly Waters did not have the capture of Daly Waters itself as its primary objective. The initial advance of Allied ground forces into Daly Waters had been set to enter the hex, engage Japanese LCU's and maintain contact with them (using ground bombardment attacks). This action required Allied LCU's moving into Daly Waters to be in sufficient strength where a Japanese shock attack could not eject them from the Daly Waters hex, though Allied forces entering Daly Waters would not necessarily be strong enough to capture it. As long as Allied ground forces in Daly Waters maintained contact with the Japanese, Japanese combat LCU's in Daly Waters would be frozen in place.

The new situation in effect at Daly Waters has (1) created the possibility of destroying nearly all the Japanese field army in NW Australia at Daly Waters, (2) largely eliminated any orderly Japanese withdrawal or delaying action back to Darwin, (3) Jap ground units caught in Daly Waters cannot move to oppose an Allied landing on the NW Australia coast nor can they be evacuated from NW Australia for defence of the DEI.

Current situation map of NW Australia follows the end of this report.

Allied fighters launch ground attack strikes on Jap LCU's in Daly Waters. AAR's follow. Except for occasional 4E bombing strikes to keep the airfield at Darwin inoperative, all other Allied air activity in NW Australia will concentrate on ground attack strikes against the Jap LCU's in Daly Waters.

Although the move to capture Katherine could turn out to be very good, I have some reservations.  These are:
 
(1)  it will be very difficult to get supply up to Katherine.  Little will reach overland (note none will travel along the road through Daly Waters whilst that hex remains contest with enemy units present) as it will be delivered over 4 raod hexes, 1 cross country hex and 3 railroad hexes,
 
(2)  you will not be able to air drop supplies into Katherine if there are any enemy units located there, unless you own the base.  Hence you need to be sure that if you do press all the way to Katherine you can capture it before he can position (using the railroad as opposed to you using road/cross country) a blocking force from Darwin
 
(3) the strategic aim of pinning the enemy to Daly Waters may not require the capture of Katherine now that the enemy supply line has been cut by road and presumably will soon be cut off in the cross country around Daly Waters
 
If you can capture and deliver adequate supply to Katherine, then it is a good move.  If not, you might need to reassess how stong a blocking force you need to retain on the road/railway immediately immediately north of Daly Waters (where it will be easier to resupply them) and whether the surplus units currently moving cross country might be better directed towards the direct capture of Daly Waters.
 
Other than the logistical reservations regarding perhaps going too far to Katherine, (as seen from a distance and away from the hard data) its a good move anyway.

Alfred,

My primary intent behind advancing to Katherine is expanding the "ring" around the Jap ground units caught in Daly Waters and (secondly) to push the "railhead" point for any remaining Jap supply path into Daly Waters further north.

Current intel estimates on Jap LCU's in NW Australia is a bit uncertain, especially with what appears to be a large-scale removal of Jap LCU's from NW Australia. At this time there is no positive identity of most of the evacuated LCU's - Sigint on these is beginning to trickle in. There is a previously undetected concentration of 15 Jap LCU's at Lautem (Timor) and I'm suspecting this is where the Jap LCU's removed from Darwin have gone at least temporarily. I'm also suspecting that most if not all the Jap LCU's leaving Darwin were "non-combat" units (base forces, engineers, flak, etc).

There is only one detected Jap LCU in NW Australia outside of Daly Waters and this unit is located in Darwin - this does not exclude the presence of other unseen Jap LCU's still in NW Australia and these would likely be in or moving to Katherine. A push to Katherine by Allied ground forces would almost certainly answer this question.

(3) the strategic aim of pinning the enemy to Daly Waters may not require the capture of Katherine now that the enemy supply line has been cut by road and presumably will soon be cut off in the cross country around Daly Waters

I'm going to have to refresh myself on land zones of control in WitP, specifically in reference to the hexes W and SW of Daly Waters.

Allied ground units have moved around Daly Waters only to the north (as shown on the previous situation map) - no Allied LCU's have passed through the hexes to the W or SW of Daly Waters. The question being are the hexes W and SW of Daly Waters Japanese-controlled and eligible for use in a supply path. It appears they would be Japanese controlled if a Jap LCU was the last to have passed through them (if one could remember this detail in the 3+ years we've played this PBEM). If Pillager has never moved a Jap LCU through the adjacent hexes W and SW of Daly Waters, are these hexes still Allied-controlled (as they initially were on 12/7/41)? I hate being a rules-lawyer, but this technicality seems to be quite relevent to the Japanese situation inside Daly Waters.

Your point is well taken - I may have to scrape up a LCU to move around Daly Waters to the W and SW. An Allied capture of Katherine would compound the Japanese supply path problem into Daly Waters by eliminating the use of the 2 hexes of rail line southward from Katherine as well as the hex in Katherine itself. All this is assuming that Darwin is the primary or only source of supply points for the remaining Japanese supply path into Daly Waters if there is one. I have two other Australian LCU's (both infantry) now moving around the north side of Daly Waters - 23 Brigade and Gull Force. Gull Force would be highly useful to complete the circle around Daly Waters once it reaches the rail line hex to Katherine - completing the circle around the W and SW side of Daly Waters from north to south would be the shortest movement path. Sigint report entry for 1/23 indicates radio transmission from unknown Jap TF north of Fiji (hex 83,113) - possible KB sortie? Four U.S. subs are moving from their present locations near Suva and Pago Pago to form an intercept area south of Wallis Is (shown on situation map) to intercept any Japanese naval movement westward from the location of the detected radio transmissions. A group of six additional U.S. submarines are enroute to Pago Pago (estimated arrival off Pago Pago in 2 days) - these will also become available to engage and attack the KB if it is indeed moving towards the Pago Pago area.

Surface naval combat between one of the trailing U.S. transport convoys and a Jap picket MSW. AAR follows. Perhaps one of the few times in WitP where transports actually win a surface naval action!

wneumann,

You don't have to be a rules lawyer. There is a shortcut key (either"W" or "1" IIRC) which will tell you who owns the hex. The Japanese can only get supply through to Daly Waters only through hexes which either have no owner (ie have a blank) or are marked with a white letter J. Contested hexes are those with both the letters A and J and supply will not travel through that hex.

The other important consideration in determining overland supply lines is the cost of moving supply which is as follows:

2% via railroad
5% via road
25% via trail
50% via cross country

This transportation cost was alluded to by me in my last post (under point 1). If my identification of the terrain was accurate, you would actually lose (whilst Daly Waters remains contested) 76% of the supplies sent to an Allied owned Katherine.

On another point, it seems to me that your 2E bombers are now receiving less flak damage than before now that they seem to be operating at a higher altitude.
